Polio was one of the most dreaded childhood diseases of the 20th century in the United States. Periodic epidemics had occurred since the late 19th century, but they had increased in size and frequency in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. An average of over 35,000 cases were reported during this time period. In 1955, 13,850 cases of paralytic polio were reported in the United States. Twenty-year-old Marilyn Lang of Shakopee was one of those cases. The following is an interview with Marilyn by Tom Melchior, as part of the Scott County Historical Society’s Greatest Generation project (Read by Kathy Haubrich – daughter).

This is the live video feed from the interview.

Rotary Club Radio was privileged to have the opportunity to interview the Rotary Group Study Exchange Team (GSE Team) from the Czech Republic and Slovakia on April 10, 2013, in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin.

The GSE program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers.

As a GSE team member, each participant travels with their team to areas of different countries. Teams will enjoy a four to six-week experience of the host country’s culture and institutions, observing how their vocations are practiced abroad, developing personal and professional relationships, and exchanging ideas.

During their 4-6 week tour, participants will experience five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families.

Each team member’s travel expenses are paid for through the Foundation, via the most economical round-trip airline ticket between the home and host countries. Hosting Rotarians provide meals, lodging, and group travel within their district.

District 5960 is excited to host the 2013 Inbound GSE Team from District 2240 – Czech Republic and Slovakia. I look forward to interviewing the group and hearing more about their experiences in America, what they’ve seen, and what is yet to come.

037 Rotary Club Radio The Trust Edge with David Horsager Oct 01, 2012
    Show notes

In this episode of Rotary Club Radio, I interview David Horsager, an international speaker and author of the book, “The Trust Edge.”

    Rotary Club Radio

    Rotary Club Radio Episode 037

    Length: 34.5 min.

    Featured Segment

    David Horsager

David Horsager, M.A., C.S.P, is an author, entrepreneur, professor, and award-winning keynote speaker who researches and speaks on the bottom-line impact of trust.

David’s signature speech and book, The Trust Edge, has inspired leaders and motivated teams toward greater results on four continents and across the U.S.

Today we’re going to be talking to David Horsager about his book, “The Trust Edge.” I am totally excited to bring this interview to Rotary Club Radio because after reading just a portion of The Trust Edge, I knew its message would resonate with Rotarians around the world.

The Trust Edge delivers a comprehensive plan to successfully implement the building of trust in an organization or relationship. His 8 Pillars of Trust are a breakthrough for success in the board room, office, marriage, or friendship. Trust is a key component of life.

    The 8 Pillars of Trust

    1. Consistency: The little things that are done consistently make for leaders being followed, increased sales and retention, and a higher level of trust. Consistency is the way brands are built and character is revealed.
    2. Clarity: People trust the clear and mistrust or distrust the ambiguous. Be clear about your mission, purpose, expectations, and daily activities. When people are clear about the mission they do the little things differently. A clear mission unifies and inspires. When we are clear about priorities on a daily basis we become productive and effective.
    3. Compassion: Think beyond yourself. Never underestimate the power of sincerely caring. It is the reason we trust our mothers over some salespeople. We are skeptical if the salesperson really has our best interest in mind. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is not just an old saying; it is a bottom-line truth. If followed, it builds trust.
    4. Character: Do what is right over what is easy. Character is a mix of two things. One is integrity, which means being the same from beliefs to words to actions. The other is moral character. Take the high road in every interaction.
    5. Contribution: Few things build trust quicker than actual results. Be a contributor who delivers real results.
    6. Competency: Staying fresh, relevant, and capable builds trust. The humble teachable person keeps learning new and better ways of doing things. They stay current on ideas and trends. There is always more to learn so make a habit of reading, learning, and listening to fresh information.
    7. Connection: People want to follow, buy from, and be around friends. People become friends when they build connections. Ask questions. Listen. Life, work, and trust are about relationships. All relationships are best built by establishing genuine connections.
    8. Commitment: Stick with it through adversity. Followers trusted General Patton; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Gandhi; Jesus; and George Washington because they saw commitment. They saw sacrifice for the greater good. Commitment reveals and builds trust.

Special Event | Book Launch Party

You are invited to be a part of the biggest book launch of the year!

The Red Thread Promise is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to providing hope and healing to needy and orphaned children.

The Red Thread Promise (TRTP) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide life-changing medical procedures to special-needs orphans and needy children who have no funds with which to pay for these services. Our program exists to improve the quality of life for these children. We want to provide them with the treatment they need so that each child has the chance to live a life with dignity, health, and hope.

The Red Thread Promise is an American organization with a global focus. We consider our humanitarian efforts to be an investment in world peace, building relationships between people of different countries, connecting strangers for the greater good of humanity. Through involvement in TRTP, it is our dream that people will value the lives of others as much as their own.

We believe that the well-being and health of children is a right, not merely a luxury for those who can afford it. It is for these little ones that we continue to advocate through our international medical programs and national hippotherapy program. We have concentrated our efforts in 3 global communities: China, Haiti, and the United States.

There are numerous ways for volunteers and donors to get involved. Please visit our website to explore the possibilities.
