RAS #675 - The SciFi Double Feature Feb 06, 2025
    Show notes

On Ron's Amazing Stories we dive into the fascinating world of science fiction. Ron will explore the origins of science fiction and its development through the vibrant era of pulp magazines. Many credit the genre to the imaginative minds of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, but it was truly the pulp magazines of the 1930s to the 1950s that brought science fiction into the spotlight, inspiring countless readers with their thrilling tales. In our first story today, "Operation Distress" by Lester del Rey, we explore the dangers of space travel and the ever-present fear of unknown diseases. As we stand on the brink of journeys to Mars, this story brings an eerie relevance to our current times. Lester del Rey, also known as Leonard Knapp, was a prolific writer of the pulp era and contributed significantly to the development of science fiction as we know it today. And in our second tale, "First Contact" from the SciFi series Dimension X, we venture into the depths of space where humans meet an alien civilization for the first time. This story is a captivating exploration of diplomacy and the mysteries of the universe, reminding us of the infinite possibilities that lie beyond. RAS #674 - The Fighting 69th Jan 30, 2025
    Show notes

On this episode of Ron's Amazing Stories, we delve into the captivating world of Lux Radio Theater, where they brought the drama and excitement of Hollywood's finest films to the airwaves. Today, we present The Fighting 69th, a stirring wartime drama that transports us back to the tumultuous days of World War I. This epic tale follows the journey of a brash young recruit as he embarks on a transformative experience on the battlefield. Pat O'Brien, the legendary actor, reprises his iconic role as Father Francis P. Duffy, bringing the real-life war hero to life. O'Brien's portrayal infuses the character with authenticity and depth, making him a compelling figure in the narrative. The Fighting 69th first aired on April 6, 1942, captivating audiences with its powerful storytelling and unforgettable performances. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the golden age of radio, showcasing the transformative power of radio storytelling. Question: Do you like the direction Ron's Amazing Stories has taken in the recent episodes? I've received a variety of comments lately regarding the refocus on Old Time Radio. Some people enjoy it, while others miss the real-life stories. One reason for this change is that I'm currently working on other projects, and the other is that story submissions have come to a halt. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please drop me a line today. RAS #671 - War Of The Worlds Jan 09, 2025
    Show notes

This time on Ron's Amazing Stories we have something special - one of my favorite stories, H.G. Wells' 1898 novel, War of The Worlds. As a kid, I was both terrified and excited by the thought of life on Mars. We've had War Of The Worlds on the show before, but it was only 30 minutes long and failed to capture the story. So, we have the Lux Radio Theater version, which does a great job telling this fantastic tale. The sound effects alone rival those in the movie, and the acting is even a tad bit better! It was created by Lux Radio Theater and stars Dana Andrews in the role of Professor Clayton Forrester. I think that you are going to enjoy it! The Martians have ruined their planet and have decided to take ours for themselves, removing all humans in the process. I won't give away the ending, but I will say that things don't go as they planned. Featured Story - War Of The Worlds War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by H.G. Wells, first published in 1898. It tells the story of an alien invasion from Mars, where Martians with advanced technology and disregard for human life invade Earth. The narrative is notable for its realistic portrayal of panic and societal breakdown in the face of a superior force. What you will hear is Lux Radio Theater's adaptation of the story. It first aired in August of 1955. Ron's Amazing Stories Is Sponsored by: Audible - You can get a free audiobook and a 30 day free trial at audibletrial.com/ronsamazingstories.
