“The Kingdom Of Comfort” (a story about defining risk and overcoming my addiction to certainty) Mar 15, 2021

Show notes

Have you ever felt like you were supposed to step into something new in life, but were apprehensive because you had more questions than answers?

So much of how the world talks about success doesn’t acknowledge the fact that, oftentimes, taking the next step is a lot like that scene in Indiana Jones where he takes the “Leap of Faith” from the rock cliff.

You’re comfortable where you’re at! There are a million reasons not to jump, maybe most of your friends are even telling you not to! But you know in your gut there’s something more for you waiting somewhere out there in the darkness and unknown.

This is the most vulnerable podcast episode I’ve ever recorded, one that brought me to tears, because this convo isn’t about that successful moment when your foot lands on solid ground…

It’s about the split-second free fall that nobody talks about, and I’ve been in it for the past few years…

“THE MYTH OF INTENTIONALITY” (My most controversial musical belief!) Feb 27, 2021

Show notes

Today’s podcast “THE MYTH OF INTENTIONALITY” is my most controversial musical belief and is going to piss a ton of musicians off!

ALL music is JUST A SERIES OF CHOICES PEOPLE MADE OUT OF PERSONAL PREFERENCE. Once you understand this, you are FREE!!!

Your gear doesn’t matter. There is no “right choice.” That “iconic” sound your favorite brilliant musician or artist came up with? Chances are, they stumbled on it by accident.

It’s 2:45 am and I’ve just had just enough ramen and sake to loosen my lips. Sarah’s getting ready for bed, let’s talk about “THE MYTH OF INTENTIONALITY”

Christopher Plummer and the "Paradox of Pain, Sadness, and Talent.” Feb 08, 2021

Show notes

I used to think it was all the great things that happened in my life - my wins, my successes, that would connect and endear me to others. I used to think that it was happiness that leads to talent.

But after revisiting a 1964 interview with Christopher Plummer who passed away this week (best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music) I was reminded, maybe it’s actually out of pain and sadness that most talent and deep personal connection grow out of.

“THE KING IS DEAD… LONG LIVE THE KING!” (12 Things I learned from Larry King that changed my life.) Jan 27, 2021

Show notes

A mentor of mine passed away this weekend.

He was 87 and possibly the most curious person of all time.

He made a living by talking, but would constantly tell me things like, “I never learn a thing while I’m talking. I realize every morning that nothing I say today will teach me anything, so if I’m going to learn a lot today, I’ll have to do it by listening.”

He changed my life in more ways than one and he’s the reason I had the confidence to start my podcast, but here’s the strangest part about our relationship…

I never met the man.
