If everything goes exactly as planned, you’re not really traveling—you’re just moving through a postcard. The magic happens in the discomfort: the missed train, the questionable street food, the conversation in broken language—because that’s where the real stories live.

In honor of "National Tattoo Day" here's an episode from 6 years ago! Since posting it, I've had multiple people reach out and tell me that it inspired them to get their first tattoo.
etting your first tattoo can be intimidating. How bad does it hurt? How do you book an appointment or pick an artist? What can you expect; from the moment you step into a tattoo parlor, to leaving with your fresh new ink?
Whether you’ve been thinking about getting your first tattoo or simply curious about what it’s like, this entertaining audio guide is guaranteed to replace any hesitation, fear, or questions you may have with informed confidence.
WARNING: Listening to “A Guide To Getting Your First Tattoo” may cause sudden and undeniable urges to get a tattoo and has been known to invoke sudden spikes in confidence, transforming the listener into a go-to “Tattoo Expert" in their circle of friends.

A chance run-in at the annual Northeast Minneapolis 'Art-A-Whirl' reminded me... there are two kinds of people in this world: those who have ideas and do nothing; and those who have ideas and act on them. I'll be damned if I don't try my hardest to be someone who acts.

Do you have an idea you’re sitting on, but you’ve been hesitant to give it a shot?
Maybe it’s new and you’re nervous. Maybe you don’t know where to start. Maybe you do, but the logistics seem daunting… Kieran Folliard knows what that feels like but thinks you should still give it a shot!
Kieran’s name is synonymous with Irish pubs in the Twin Cities and he just released a new Irish whiskey called Red Locks. But our story doesn’t start there… almost 10 years ago, Sarah and I got our engagement photos taken at his pub The Local and his previous whiskey endeavor sponsored our wedding!
Join us for a conversation over Red Locks Irish Whiskey about how that came about, strapping up your knees to give your ideas a shot, and what stands in the way.

Whether you’re at a pub, a coffee shop, or in line at the DMV, striking up a conversation with a stranger can be intimidating. That said, I’m convinced it’s one of the foundations of living a curious life.
You may just have a kind interaction but you never know, you may be sitting across from a future close friend, or in Roy Connaughton’s case, a future friend and your future Irish Pub co-owner.
With the convenient distraction of a cell phone in our pocket at all times, we’ve never had an easier excuse to not strike up a conversation, but Roy says that it’s not that simple. Growing up in Ireland pre-cellphones and social media, there’s always been an excuse to not strike up a conversation but it you can get over that hurdle… you never know where in the world life will take you!

After visiting over 32 countries, I’ve become fascinated by local bars, restaurants, service industries, and their tipping culture all over the world.
Whether you’re a seasoned world traveler, or about to take your first international trip… local tipping culture can be confusing and the classic American mindset of, “They’ll be offended if you tip” no longer works.

My full-time job for over a decade has been performing as a freelance musician. Of course, I want people to pay artists and musicians [A TON] to perform live. So… when I saw this petition going around on Facebook saying we should force the Minneapolis Parks & Rec board to pay artists for every free outdoor concert, no matter the size… why did I initially feel like I disagreed with it?

If you currently find yourself frustrated because something you’re making isn’t getting the respect or recognition you feel it deserves… if you’re a musician and you feel frustrated because the value of what you bring to the table isn’t viewed the same as what you know it should be…

I used to view the things I was creating as a problem to solve. Later in life, I realized it came with another subconscious belief... there's a 'right way' to do it and someone else had the answers. (or at least figured it all out before me.)

This is a throwback to an episode Sarah and I recorded in Cologne, Germany back in 2019!
We planned to drink our way through the local specialty, Kölsch, but when we heard that there’s been an emerging craft beer scene, we reached out to a certified cicerone to talk about the hardest part of convincing Germans to open their mind to new things happening in the beer world.
What we thought would be a short hang-out, ended up forming a new friendship solidified by our mutual love of beer that lasted late into the night.

John Morley once said, “The great business of life is to be, to do, to do without, and to depart.”
Today on the podcast, I ambush Sarah in the bathroom as she's getting ready, and we discuss what happens when we find ourselves in a period of "to do without." Specifically, when one doesn't naturally feel curious about life.
Sarah and I were watching the new Harrison Ford doc on Disney+ last night called "Timeless Heros" when something sparked my curiosity...
Sure... I've been guilty of it plenty of times... my head stuck so far up my technical skills that I forget what I was trying to express in the first place.
Seriously… this may sound like crap, but I probably wouldn’t have been music director for Owl City if it weren’t for what I learned from the actors on this show.
I’m just getting over a month of some of the worst back pain of my life. It almost put me in the ER and I almost had to cancel a tour because of it. Naturally… I looked for advice. Unfortunately… most of it sucked. And that fact taught me a ton about the way the creative process works.
My friend was given a crappy cocktail, and it could have been solved with more questions. I'm annoyed, and I don't have time to dry off.
“What are my 5 to 10-year goals?” Those kind of questions have never resonated with me. But, “Who am I?” and “What do I want?”… those… those seem like they serve me a bit better at the top of the year.
How badass would it be if we allowed 2024 to give us permission to say, “This is who I am, this is what I like, and that’s ok.”
Nostalgia is my drug of choice, and New Year's Resolutions often fuel my anxiety about the future. It’s all too much. It’s all too big. Maybe simply giving grace for the now is all I can resolve for.
At the end of the day, most of the crap just doesn’t matter.
Do you consider yourself a traveler?
Forget “Yes” or “No.” What I’m really curious about is what comes to mind when I ask you that question.
Maybe you picture yourself boarding a plane with your passport in your pocket.
I’ve been obsessed with asking my music friends that same question this past month, and a gig this past weekend in Minnesota’s Iron Range reminded me of a quote I once heard, “Sometimes, you can get a stamp in your passport, just by crossing the street.”
📍 The Iron Range
Just a quick podcast to talk about how sick of talking about it I am.
"Eager" and "enthusiastic" are two words I could use to describe my younger self in multiple aspects of my life. The problem is that those often get perceived externally as "desperate."
Here's how I learned not to give a shit. (or at least calm down and appear like I didn't."
For years... I misunderstood what real manifestation looks like. Turns out, it's far more blue-collar than I thought...
A greenroom conversation with my buddy Steve Bosmans in Columbus, Georgia reminds me of how I defined 'Success' for years... It turns out it was extremely unhelpful.
📍Columbus, GA
I once heard a comedian say, “Writing a set is similar to building a playground.”
The writing and prep, that’s where the real work happens. Once you walk on stage, your only job is to embrace the play and have as much fun as possible.
It changed the way I view my job as a bassist and music director but last night, eating at one of my favorite restaurants (Tenant) with Sarah, I realized it might need to start changing the way I GO to concerts from now on too.
When I'm developing film, I don't get pissed at it for taking longer than I thought. You don't look at a flower that hasn't opened and get frustrated at the amount of time it's taking to bloom...
Why the hell do that then to ourselves and our creative journey?
Be gentle with yourself my friends, if your evolution is taking longer than you thought.

A conversation and an off-hand comment from a sommelier, a knife shop owner in East Flanders Belgium, and a couple of quotes from my favorite artists were the reminders I needed today to live on the edge of my comfort zone.
Join Sarah, our friend Eva, and myself at a pub in Gent, Belgium in the shadow of Sint-Jacobskerk as we talk about a Russian phrase that may change the way I look at every new pair of pants I ever own.
On luck, Disappointment, and Infinite Responsibility
I've been putting off jumping back into the podcast and have been overthinking it so... Here's my freakin re-entry.
I recently heard an interview where George Lucas was explaining the true power of the Millennium Falcon and it made me think about the comparisons to an artists’ journey. I know this sounds cheesy as hell… but come along for the journey anyway.
In celebration of "International Whisky Day," I thought I'd re-release this episode. (originally aired 6/7/2019) Whether you consider yourself a bourbon consumer or maybe you've always been curious about diving into the world of whiskey but find yourself unsure how to approach a dram in a way that allows you to appreciate it to the fullest.
Join me as I sit down with master taster John French at Bullet Whiskey in Louisville Kentucky as you learn how to take your whiskey-tasting experience to the next level.
This episode is brought to you by Bullet Frontier Whiskey and Diagio International.
Whether you’re at a pub, a coffee shop, or in line at the DMV, striking up a conversation with a stranger can be intimidating. That said, I’m convinced it’s one of foundations of living a curious life.
You may just have a kind interaction but you never know, you may be sitting across from a future close friend, or in Roy Connaughton’s case, a future friend and your future Irish Pub co-owner.
(Originally aired in 2020.) With the convenient distraction of a cell phone in our pocket at all times, we’ve never had an easier excuse to not strike up a conversation, but Roy says that it’s not that simple. Growing up in Ireland pre-cellphones and social media, there’s always been an excuse to not strike up a conversation but you can get over that hurdle… you never know where in the world life will take you!
Roy Connaughton is one of the owners of Morrissey’s Irish Pub in Minneapolis, MN, and a new friend of mine and I wasn’t expecting how deep this conversation ended up going. This my friends is why I do this.
My music friends and I often look at 'Social Media' as a 'necessary evil' of sorts. Something we feel like we need to do, but would rather just delete our accounts. This idea changed all of that for me.
I recently heard Austin Butler talk about an approach to acting when he was younger that hindered him. It turns out, the same applies to music and most other artistic endeavors.
When I learned to learn metaphorically... it even changed the way I watched Netflix.
On process, presence, procrastination, and "Fly-over Days."
📍 Minneapolis, MN
Henri J.M. Nouwen once said, “I have always been complaining that my work was constantly interrupted; then I realized that the interruptions were my work.” Join me as I sit down, over coffee, with my friends Joel Bowers and Terry Esau to talk about the pursuit of a life of purpose and life’s dance between the planned and the unknown.
We never know what’s going to lead to something more… but that hope is probably the wrong reason to say "Yes!"
After almost two decades of traveling the world with music, I’ve realized the beauty of learning to become a professional stranger.
Let’s talk about bids for connection and what Pete Holmes calls, “Social-Grace Ping Pong”
We’ve all lost a gig. I was just talking to a friend about their recent experiment and was reminded of an episode of Seinfeld I watched last night.
My buddy Joel has been to hundreds of funerals and shares a thought on what lives lead to the most beautiful ones.
How a chance encounter at a pub in Ireland is helping me redefine how I look at New-Years Resolutions.
What's the difference between a four-star hotel and a five-star hotel? Better yet... What's the difference between a four-star musician and a five-star musician?
📍 Pendry Hotel, Park City Utah
“Well… maybe that’s the point of it…”
A chance encounter at Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, MI brings a reminder of the eternal hunt, shared by anyone creating anything…
All creativity informs all creativity. All art informs all art. I'm in Long Island, New York Performing with Caitlyn Smith, and turns out... how she views connecting with large audiences from the stage reminds me a lot of a technique used by New York street photographers from the 1970s...
A story about the everyday objects we keep close and the meaning we place in them.
It sounds negative... but it's the reminder and the mindset that's had THE GREATEST positive impact on everything I've ever made!
I often have the temptation to put people I admire, who are masters at their craft, on a pedestal. Robert Greene's thoughts on mastery have been a massive help in my realization that we all have the potential to be a master.
I recently learned there are two journeys to dopamine, easy access or meaningful pursuit, and how you get there makes all the difference in the world.
Turns out, it's a choice...
Some musicians may find this my most controversial opinion ever… But I’m right.
You can still be “All about the music“ while understanding that people don’t go to shows with their eyes closed. If you play live, not only do you need to put in the work of finding your musical voice on your instrument, but you also need to find your unique sense of style.
For the past few years, I've given multiple creative endeavors a shot outside my 'lane' of being a bass player. Like this podcast! Let's talk about some of the frustrating parts that come alongside that process...
Pick any day in the past 6 years... I can tell you EXACTLY where I was and what happened. It's not because I have the best memory in the world, far from it! It's because of something I do called "Logging" - It only takes a couple of minutes each morning and it's one of the most curiously rewarding habits or commitments I've ever made.
Two conversations have changed the way I look at To-Do lists. One, I had with my friend Cory Wong. The other, I overheard with writer/director Robert Rodriguez. But I don't feel like talking about it...
Let's talk about ideas, the ego, creative collaboration... my insecurity... and how I got all of this WRONG for years!
A few years back, I found myself in a conversation with B.J. Novak while we were both waiting for our luggage at LAX...
In Pt. II of this mini-series I'm calling, "Write Sh*t Down!" I dive into the method I've developed of taking notes while listening to podcasts and audiobooks. It's totally different from when you're reading and this Sh*t's important! What you're listening to lately MATTERS and is a reflection of, not only your own curiosity but also your friends', and you'll want to keep track of it, here's why...
A curious introduction into my habits & techniques of collecting, editing, organizing, and referencing EVERYTHING IN LIFE that I find interesting.

My friends and I are given free shit ALL THE TIME! This is why...
For the longest time, I misunderstood what “manifesting” was.
I used to think it was the belief that you can somehow attract what you want. I now realize it’s the understanding that you simply attract what you are.

As a musician, writer, artist, and human, I’ve realized... the unfortunate temptation, when seeing someone who’s good at something you’re not, is the temptation to assume it comes “naturally” to them.
As I was going through my Papa’s desk a couple of weeks ago, I found a stack of letters, never sent, never opened. That changed the way I’ll prioritize relationships and music for the rest of my life.

My grandfather passed away a couple of weeks ago.
Papa and I were extremely close so, I just haven’t had it in me to record a podcast or be on social-media up till now. (Thanks to everyone who reached out to me to check in!)
Between this and Sarah’s mom passing recently, the two of us have become what I’ve been referring to as, “students of grief” and one thing I’ve realized is, when confronted with something like this in life, it’s easy to view it as a glitch in the Matrix, an affront to our humanity. But as painful as it may be… the opposite is actually true.
Before I move on with the podcast and everyday life, I asked Sarah to sit down to talk about it on the podcast.
For years, as a musician and performance artist, I thought the answer was, “Of course! It can only make you better.” Now… I’ve realized the answer isn’t so cut and dry…

I had a conversation recently with a buddy about branding and his upcoming social-media game-plan. Later that night, I found myself at a bar with Sarah complaining about how many IPAs were on tap, and suddenly… I realized they were connected.

For years, I had no idea what my true job was as a musician. Whether it was an audition or a rehearsal at a gig I already landed, I approached it all the same… try and figure out what the artist liked, and do whatever I could to impress them. That’s how you keep getting work, no? This is what I wish someone would have told me fifteen years ago.
Whether it's for social media or for your website, sitting down to write your "Bio" is enough to trigger any musician's gag reflex. Grab a pint of Guinness and I'll share about how an artist helped me get over feeling like a used car salesman and the template I use every time I write a bio.

Why should I buy a Christmas tree on the coldest day possible? What should I look for when picking out a Christmas tree? What tree is going to smell the best or stay green the longest? Pine or Fir? Is it true you should put sugar or aspirin in your Christmas tree water to help it live longer? What does it mean for Christmas trees to be ethically sourced and why should I care?
If you’re thinking about getting a real Christmas tree this year, this podcast episode is for you!

This episode is dedicated to the countless beautiful handmade items found in our homes, made by our Mothers and Grandmothers that we as a society call “Crafts” even though we know damn well…
We should be calling them “Art”.
(on life, death, and the unknowable impact of what you’re currently making.)
Getting your first tattoo can be intimidating.
I’ve been talking a lot on the podcast about looking forward.
Let’s talk about looking back.
We need to talk about that last episode, your future, and time travel. You may not want to hear this.

Have you ever felt like you were supposed to step into something new in life, but were apprehensive because you had more questions than answers?
So much of how the world talks about success doesn’t acknowledge the fact that, oftentimes, taking the next step is a lot like that scene in Indiana Jones where he takes the “Leap of Faith” from the rock cliff.
You’re comfortable where you’re at! There are a million reasons not to jump, maybe most of your friends are even telling you not to! But you know in your gut there’s something more for you waiting somewhere out there in the darkness and unknown.
This is the most vulnerable podcast episode I’ve ever recorded, one that brought me to tears, because this convo isn’t about that successful moment when your foot lands on solid ground…
It’s about the split-second free fall that nobody talks about, and I’ve been in it for the past few years…

Today’s podcast “THE MYTH OF INTENTIONALITY” is my most controversial musical belief and is going to piss a ton of musicians off!
ALL music is JUST A SERIES OF CHOICES PEOPLE MADE OUT OF PERSONAL PREFERENCE. Once you understand this, you are FREE!!!
Your gear doesn’t matter. There is no “right choice.” That “iconic” sound your favorite brilliant musician or artist came up with? Chances are, they stumbled on it by accident.
It’s 2:45 am and I’ve just had just enough ramen and sake to loosen my lips. Sarah’s getting ready for bed, let’s talk about “THE MYTH OF INTENTIONALITY”
http://thecuriouspod.com/questions/themyth
It was only after I changed my questions that music and whiskey really started to get interesting.
I used to think it was all the great things that happened in my life - my wins, my successes, that would connect and endear me to others. I used to think that it was happiness that leads to talent.
But after revisiting a 1964 interview with Christopher Plummer who passed away this week (best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music) I was reminded, maybe it’s actually out of pain and sadness that most talent and deep personal connection grow out of.

A mentor of mine passed away this weekend.
He was 87 and possibly the most curious person of all time.
He made a living by talking, but would constantly tell me things like, “I never learn a thing while I’m talking. I realize every morning that nothing I say today will teach me anything, so if I’m going to learn a lot today, I’ll have to do it by listening.”
He changed my life in more ways than one and he’s the reason I had the confidence to start my podcast, but here’s the strangest part about our relationship…
I never met the man.

Are you a Solo Artist or Singer-Songwriter that's experienced frustration when it comes to negotiating your fee with venues and booking agents?
A friend recently voiced their frustration saying, "it is bullshit to pay a solo artist less than a full band for the same amount of performance time..."
Because I understand what it's like to be frustrated with the commerce side of music, instead of just saying, "Well, that's just the way things work." I decided to explain HOW venues approach compensation and give a couple of action steps because YOU DESERVE TO GET PAID FOR YOUR MUSIC!
Here was my reply...
Here’s a question I’ve been wondering lately, “Can food and drink be a tool for mental travel in the time of COVID while we’re all stuck at home?” Hell yes it can! But you'll have to go about it the right way. I’ve realized, if we can learn to implement Sommelier Leslee Miller’s philosophy of “Thinking & Drinking,” maybe we can get our mouth, nose, and eyes abroad… even if the rest of our body can’t. Join me on the podcast as we head to a Salzburg Austria, and enter a schnapps shop resembling a store right out of a Harry Potter novel, where I learned… maybe drinking before noon doesn’t have to lead to drunkenly stumbling back onto a Sound of Music tour bus. *** GUEST LINKS: Leslee Miller: https://amuseewine.com/ Sip Better: https://www.sipbetter.com/meetleslee Amsterdam City Walk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsXPFOKdjSI Music: THUNDERBIRD by Ryan Taubert *** Friends, if you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? I’ve had a major problem doing this podcast… If I want to become a better bassist, I know where to look. There are professionals I can ask for lessons and advice on anything from tools to techniques.
But where does one look if their goal is to become A Curious Person? Is there anyone who’s gone before and paved the way? Someone who’s questions are endless. Someone who understands that the human experience is a one-way ticket on a train that seems to be picking up speed. Someone who’s cultivated an insatiable appetite to learn about and listen to as many different personal stories, views, experiences, and thoughts as possible.
There is such a man,
his name…

I was recently listening to an interview with Lisa Kudrow (best known for acting on F.R.I.E.N.D.S.) In it, she talked about how, if you’re stepping on stage to perform, your NUMBER 1 PRIORITY is to be confident, relaxed, and comfortable.
“The audience is uncomfortable if you’re uncomfortable.”
I’ve known for years that, when we step on stage, we set the tone of the room but here’s the deal…
I haven’t been spending as much time on stage these past few months, but I’ve been wondering if this is true in my everyday life as well. Is energy contagious? What would it look like if I was as intentional about my energy say… when we walk into a room or jump on a zoom call lately?
I feel cheezy as hell talking about this stuff sometimes, but man, I wish someone would have told me years ago that we all have this low-key superpower we're not tapping into called, setting the tone.

Thank you to those that have reached out, noticing that the podcast suddenly stopped this month and that I’ve been absent from social media.
Following a week in bed with a stomach bug at the top of September, once I was FINALLY feeling better, Sarah and I both contracted COVID and were completely wiped out… scary stuff!
Interestingly, even with the numbers so high, it’s hard to wrap my mind around (1 million deaths worldwide, 200k deaths and 7.2 million JUST IN THE U.S.!) I still had a ton of friends saying that Sarah and I were the first people they knew personally who got it.
So, I pulled out the ol’ camcorder and recorded a video talking about what our experience looked like. (Testing, symptoms, and recovery) but first… we need to talk about all the opinions floating around out there.
Everyone seems to have a Medical Degree from Facebook University and when it comes to something serious like this… it can become pretty overwhelming.

With all the shit that’s been happening in 2020, have you ever thought about scheduling happiness in your life?
Me neither. UNTIL I sat down with my friend Cory a couple of years ago and he told me about how he makes a point to make sure he intentionally sets aside time each week to mark off a couple of things I would have NEVER thought about putting on a to-do list.
So, I tried it for myself and I just realized today it’s become a habit in my life and also the reason you’ll never run into me without a 3M sticky note in my wallet.

聞く “Coffee On The Rum”
September 31st, 2020_7:06am_Light Rain_Rum River
We loaded up the motorcycles and rode North under blue skies. Away from the city, away from the noise, and away from the madness of 2020. And then came the rain.
A quote by George Santayana comes to mind, “We need sometimes to escape into open solitudes, into aimlessness, into the moral holiday of running some pure hazard, in order to sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship and to be compelled to work desperately for a moment no matter what.” That’s why you’ll never hear me complain about the rain.
There are countless concerts I’ve played, cities I’ve wandered, or days I’ve simply spent outdoors with strikingly perfect weather. These memories, although enjoyable, seem to find their way into the commonplace of my memory, simply labeled, “Past”.
But days who’s plans were interrupted by rain… the edge of those memories have been sharpened.
Those, I always seem to remember.
Note For The Curious: While traveling, I often like to throw on headphones and listen to ambient audio of rain & thunder – whether trying to fall asleep on a plain/noisy hotel or even just to center myself for a few moments before a big show. Because of that, I created a TWO HOUR long audio clip of this. If you’d like it, download it for free on the podcast website.

It’s a documentary about Alex Honnold free-climbing Yosemite’s El Capitan. Right away, I knew Alex and I had nothing in common – I mean… I hate heights and I’m 6’6”… do you even know what it’s like living with that kind of daily contradiction???
Then, he started talking about fear and and I realized: to some, playing on stages in front of thousands of people might as well be climbing massive cliff… let’s talk about what it takes to get comfortable with it or anything else for that matter…
Here’s the interview referenced in this episode:

…it’s a question rendered almost obsolete in the age of cellphones and digital cameras that used to be asked by film photographers regularly. (due to the fact that every frame costs something)
Now, the only question we ask ourselves is, “Is this photo worth posting online or printing?”
“But Rob, I’m a songwriter/musician/painter/writer/graphic designer, I don’t give a crap about photography… what the hell does this have to do with me and my creative process?”
Great question you obscurely made up question asker that exists in my head…
It has EVERYTHING to do with how you decide if an idea you have is good or not. Now that I think of it, maybe it has to do more with the WHEN you decide…

聞く “Light Rain & Rolling Thunder”
August 10th, 2020_1:58am_My Home Front Porch_Minneapolis, MN
Last night was INSANE! I absolutely love thunderstorms, but I’ve never experienced an entire night of constant, non-stop, rolling thunder and lightning like what happened last night here in Minneapolis. It was so incredible that, although I could barely keep my eyes open, I grabbed my binaural recording setup and headed to the front porch to capture a field recording of it. Give it a listen on the podcast.

Five years ago, I got back from the biggest gig of my life opening for my all-time favorite band, The Foo Fighters, when my music career dried up almost overnight.
It took me two years to realize that the dry spell I was in was a comma, not a period, and if someone would have told me what I share on today’s Daily Guinness episode, it would have saved me quite a bit of confusion and a couple of years thinking that my music career was over.
The Off Camera Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bS-I7swn1w
I’ve spent the greater part of my musical journey surrounded by the obsession of trying to come up with “original” ideas.
I mean, that’s how it works right? Songwriters don’t want to get sued with an accidental copyright infringement and backing-musicians are constantly trying to come up with ways to stand out from the hordes of others trying to land the same gig.
The problem is, constantly obsessing about whether my ideas are “original” or not is one of the fastest ways to take me out of the moment, stop listening to myself, and ensures that the mystical flow of ideas is almost certainly shut off.
Maybe, instead of obsessing if it’s “original” or not… maybe the goal is to simply cultivate as many great ideas as possible. But how the hell do I go about doing that? Enter: David Lynch. One of the most creative and original artists of our time.
On today’s Daily Guinness, I share some of his thoughts on where ideas come from and how to “catch” as many as possible.

Man, whether or not you consider yourself a photographer, photography is engrained into our everyday lives. Now, every one of us has a quality camera in our pockets at all times and because of that, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Art & Ethics of it lately.
Is it appropriate to be taking selfies at places like memorials or protests? Is it appropriate to film strangers on the street any time we want? Is there a way to take a photo while still staying in the moment? Can cameras be a tool for social justice? What’s the difference between a pro and an amateur photographer? Is there a benefit to shooting film in the digital age?
I have a ton of questions but – like most things in life – I have a feeling that the answers… if there are any… won’t be binary.
Join me as I sit down with professional photographer, Lucas Botz, over coffee as we talk about all this and more.

This morning, my coffee smelled like a Wendy’s crispy chicken sandwich and I couldn’t have been more pumped about it. Here’s why…
Two years ago, I interviewed wine Sommelier and professional badass, Leslee Miller who taught me a phrase – “Thinking and Drinking” – that turned my curiosity on overdrive about expanding my palate for tasting different food and drinks.
I realized that – for years – when trying to describe the smell or taste of something, I was actually asking myself “What SHOULD I be smelling and tasting?” instead of “What AM I smelling and tasting?”
So I came up with a game I call “Hyper Specific Tasting Notes.” My friends and I do it all the time now and now, a couple years later, it’s changed the way I eat and drink.
For the curious, join me on today’s Daily Guinness episode as I talk more about unlocking your palate with “Hyper Specific Tasting Notes”

This is the picture of a plywood-walled toilet in a New York City restaurant, and the couple who spent thirteen minutes of their first date four inches from me having explosive diarrhea.
I knew it was their first date because I was listening to every word they said while I was doing that thing where you squeeze to try not to poop too loud when you know others can hear you. Maybe throwing a perfectly timed muffle-flush here and there.
Speaking of explosive diarrhea…
For 70+ hours this week/end, the only time my feet hit the floor was when they were taking me from my bed to the toilet.
Literally three days into this “Daily Guinness” podcast experiment and I’m stuck racking up frequent flyer miles on the stool pool, pouring my own “pint of proper”… if you catch my drift.
The timing of this was THE WORST and it got me thinking:
Chances are, you’re like me and have been thinking of starting something ballsy, new, and maybe a little scary. When shit hits the fan at the start
(or literally, “the porcelain” in my case)
Should we view these events as an “Omen” (via Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist) or “Resistance” (via Steven Pressfield’s ‘The War Of Art’)?
One hints that we should shift directions, the other dares us to push forward. They seem to contradict each other and I chat about it on today’s “Daily Guinness” episode.
How do you go from someone with a ton of great ideas to actually acting on them?
Most people think the hardest part is coming up with great ideas or the acting on them. I disagree. Chances are, you have killer ideas coming to mind every day. Most of us haven’t gotten in the habit of keeping track of them, so they constantly evaporate into the universe.
Two years ago, I sat down over coffee to record Question #4 of the podcast with my friend Alex Grahmann who taught me that part of living a curious life is writing things down!
In today’s episode, I revisit part of our conversation, I talk about what approach I use to keep track of thoughts & ideas, and how this habit has transformed my life over the past two years of implementing it.

June 4th, 2020 - 9:46am - 38th & Chicago, Minneapolis MN - I live a block from where George Floyd was murdered at the hands of a Minneapolis Police officer last week, making international news and sparking protests all throughout the US. For the past week, the corner of 38th & Chicago has been ground zero for the Minneapolis protests and now, eleven days later, continues to be an emotional memorial site with thousands of people driving in each day to visit. It’s early, but there’s already a few hundred people at the memorial. A garbage truck empties a dumpster in the distance along with a couple food trucks showing up to donate free meals to hungry memorial-goers. About halfway through recording, a group of five people begin to ring bells and blow into rams horns and I move closer to hear better. I’m not sure what it is but the sound of the chanting makes me think it’s a spiritual group of some sort. 聞く is a curious endeavor into the heart of listening through the art of binaural recording. Best listened to with the highest quality headphones you can get your hands on. www.thecuriouspod.com | (612) 584-9330
For those of you that I’m friends with on social media, you know that I live a block from the killing of George Floyd.
As angry and heartbroken as I am, I don’t feel right talking about my feelings at the the moment. It actually feels quite inappropriate.
An extremely important and valuable part of my community is in massive amounts of pain right now and rightfully so. They don’t feel safe, seen, or heard - So I’d like to use my podcast platform to do what I do best, listen and amplify thoughts, voices and life stories that need to be heard.
As always, I have no idea what the hell the future holds for the podcast so feel free to reach out on the podcast hotline if you know of someone who’d be a good guest.
This week, we’re revisiting a conversation with Derrick Keith Rollins Jr. A singer-songwriter best known by his stage name, “Reverend Doctor."
What should white people do about systemic racism? What’s it like to be the ’token black friend’? What does the transition from adorable black child to intimidating black adult look like when growing up in the midwest? What is racial tourism? This week, I sat down with Keith over coffee (remember getting coffee together???) to answer these questions and more.
Due to COVID-19, the past couple months have shifted just about every aspect of our lives including our relationships and living situations. Almost overnight, many of us found ourselves quarantined at home spending 24/7 with our partners and navigating these new waters often takes an extra level of intentionality.
So I decided to call up my friend Amanda Nephew, an LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist) and an Adjunct Professor at University of Northwestern-St Paul, to see if she had any tactical advice for us all both personally and with our partners.
Join us as she explains why we need to be aware of our own personal “stress language” and gives a few tactile “To Do” and “Not To Do” things to consider at this time.

A massive question my friends and I have been asking lately is, "How should I spend my time while stuck at home during this time of self-distancing?" A ton of people say you should "Hustle", make the most of this time, look for the opportunity in this situation, and spend it "CRUSHING IT!!!!" But... I don't always have that in me to 'make the most of this situation." I've found myself emotionally all over the spectrum this past week from creating to sitting on the couch, from connecting online to turning my phone off and just ignoring the world... here's what I've learned so far.

One look at some of the overreacting people I’ve seen at Target here in Minneapolis and you’d think it was the zombie apocalypse. With the convenient distraction of a cell phone in our pocket at all times, we’ve never had an easier excuse to not strike up conversation, but Roy says that it’s not that simple. Growing up in Ireland pre-cellphones and social-media, there’s always been an excuse to not strike up conversation but it you can get over that hurdle… you never know where in the world life will take you! Roy Connaughton is one of the owners of Morrissey’s Irish Pub in Minneapolis, MN and a new friend of mine and I wasn’t expecting how deep this conversation ended up going. This my friends, is why I do this. ALSO! Next week, I’ll be at Morrissey’s hosting their St. Patrick’s Day 2020 celebrations! Come swing out and LET’S CHEERS over a pint of Guinness! Shane Oporto is best known for his time as executive chef at Octo Fishbar and “Chef de Cuisine” at La Belle Vie. We talk about how, seemingly overnight, Shane went from working behind the scenes as a Chef to being asked to give interviews and being flown all over the world to cook for private events. Wait… that sounds a lot like my first gig with Owl City, being thrown on a private jet with my close friends to open for The Frey. I tell that too but it has me wondering… is there anything else bassists and chefs have in common? I’ve had quite a few requests through the podcast hotline and website email asking for us to bring in someone to flip the norm and interview ME on the podcast.
While we haven’t quite figured out the right fit for what that would look like, I’ve decided to start sharing some of the other podcast interviews that I’ve been brought in to be a guest on over the past couple years.
Derek Droogsma is a musician in the twin cities area who interviewed me this summer for his new podcast “Catching Up With…”
Join us as we talk get meta talking about recording podcasts, why I think long form recorded conversation is so important to us, and how finding myself alone and homesick in a hotel suite in Shanghai China changed the way I look at my future career in music.

I’ve been loving seeing artist friends say thank you to everyone listening to their music and talk about how encouraged they are to see those numbers grow but then I got to thinking… What happens when you look at the numbers… and it’s not what you expected? What happens when less people come out to your show than you were hoping? What happens when less people are reading your new blog than you had expected by now? What happens when you look at the numbers… and are discouraged? Have you ever wanted to reach out to someone you respect to get together for advice but didn’t know how to ask? Maybe, you hit someone up already but didn’t get a ‘yes’ or EVEN WORSE… you never got a response. The act of reaching out to people you respect is a catalyst to living a curious life, but nothing makes a person’s eyes roll back in their head far enough to watch their own hair grow from the inside out than a vague, “I’d love to pick your brain…” email. So… how the hell do we even go about it? In today’s “Let’s Cheers” podcast I outline 3 things you should keep in mind when doing this, so grab an americano and join me in the shadow of a cathedral in… Boise Idaho? What?… to learn more.

As artists currently living in a world of instant “feedback” where we’re constantly tempted to check how many streams we’ve gotten on Spotify or likes a post got on social media to see if something we made is connecting with people. In a world where the first question I ALWAYS (and I do mean ALWAYS) get asked about my podcast is how many downloads it gets. We can start to have a misplaced confidence in our understanding what it is we’re creating that is making the most impact on people. The fact of the matter is, you and I are shit at knowing what it is we make that’s going to resonate with other people. We think the numbers encourages us and motivates us to keep creating, but the fact is… it’s a shallow motivation. As soon as the numbers stop reflecting what we imagined they would (and it WILL happen to you) the amount of discouragement that follows is enough for me to see a ton of my friends quit making honest meaningful work. That’s why I think you and I need a need a mantra to repeat to ourselves this month and here it is: “That’s none of my damn business!”

Jonathan Palmer is the president of one of the midwest’s largest sci-fi/fantasy conventions, CONvergence. I’ve never been to a sci-fi/fantasy convention before and when a friend told me it was taking place while I was in town, I knew I had to check it out! I reached out to Jonathan to sit down and learn more about the convention, but what ended up taking place was a conversation that taught me about community, solidarity, identity, and how, if it weren’t for racism, a map of Minneapolis' highways would look entirely different. All of a sudden, I realize what’s holding me back isn’t rational decision making just because I don’t know where I’m going to sleep the next few nights, it’s actually my insecurity about the uncertainty of life and desperate subconscious attempts to force things to work out the way I planned.

What would you do if someone gave you 100 MILLION dollars TODAY? Maybe you already have a game plan for your future and every penny of it would be automatically allocated into your existing strategy within moments of it hitting your bank account. Or... maybe you’re like me and sitting down to dream up a list of what your life would look like in that scenario is as foreign as someone asking you what you’d do if you could fly. What would happen if you had a friend who sat down with you over coffee and, not only gave you permission to dream, but walked you through an outline of how to do it in a way that encompassed the most important categories of your life? (Adventure, Physical, Emotional, Intellectual, Spiritual, Material, Financial, Creativity, Legacy, Character, and Professional) Lacey Guck is a singer songwriter in Minneapolis who did just that with me and let me tell you... things got personal. “In Praxia” is Latin for “In Practice” In this follow up to yesterday’s episode about something I’m calling “The UBER Challenge” I sit down with one of my closest friends, Aron Johnson, in Tampa Florida to talk about our recent UBER ride and how much we learned from our driver in 15min. I hate small talk. If I’m sitting next to someone on a flight or in an UBER, I’m most comfortable with my headphones in, minding my own business. But this year is different, I’ve committed to living a more curious life and that means being more generous with my attention and conversation on a day to day basis. Because of that I’ve come up with something I’m calling my UBER Challenge. Two things I try to accomplish in every UBER I get into this year. If you ever visited Minnesota in the winter, you’re bound to notice constant activity happening on any number of the, now frozen over, lakes. When you spend a year and a half listening to yourself talk to other people... it's hard to not become discouraged when every mistake you make is constantly right there naked in-front of you. What's surprising is, by choosing to learn from them, it has massively impacted even my music and even the artists I stand behind. In this episode, I take a moment before walking into a rehearsal to push through jet-lag and talk about how trust and rapport can be built or destroyed within the first few seconds of walking on stage or starting a conversation and should be your number one focus STARTING TODAY!

I love this! Keep your questions coming! Today, I was asked, "what's so great about this Kölsch beer in Cologne Germany you keep talking about?" Well... it may suprise you that my favorite part about the experience is the limitations it forces on you. Let me explain...
In this episode, I answer your question that we've gotten a ton this week from YOU curious persons, "How do you and Sarah decide on where you are going to travel to next. The answer may surprise you and hopefully help unlock the way you look at the world around you. I LOVE this and want to make it a regular feature of the podcast so keep sending your questions in! Leave a message on the hotline and I may even use it if it's picked.

“Does this REALLY hold the skulls of THE three wise men?” (feat. Thomas at Cologne Cathedral, Germany) Sarah and I are in Cologne, Germany! Ever since I heard, years ago, that Cologne Cathedral is said to house the bones of the ACTUAL three wise men that visited Jesus at his birth, I’ve been curious about finding out if this was true. Well… it was really over a year after His birth that they visited. And… “Magi” actually doesn’t translate to “kings” exactly. Turns out, I may have been obsessed with the WRONG question this whole time. Recording Location: Cologne Cathedral, Germany“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 19
“Does Germany Have A Craft Beer Scene?” (feat. Certified Cicerone Linus in Cologne, Germany)
Sarah and I are in Cologne, Germany! Our plan was to drink our way through the local specialty, Kölsch, but when we heard that there’s been an emerging craft beer scene, we reached out to a certified cicerone named Linus (@koelschbeertour on instagram) to talk about the hardest part of convincing Germans to open their mind to new things happening in the the beer world.
What we thought would be a short hang out, ended up being the forming of a new friendship solidified by our mutual love of beer that lasted late into the night.

Can A Tattoo In Germany Murder Stereotypes? (feat. Bobbie at Studio 23 Tattoo in Frankfurt Germany)
Everyone’s heard the phrase “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” but why the hell is it so hard for us to destroy stereotypes that are ingrained in our perception of the world? Craft beer is for bearded guys with tattoos right? Speaking of tattoos, if you’re going to get one from someone who knows what their talking about, make sure they’re a dude with tattoos covering their arms and neck right?
I sat down to get, what ended up being the most bad ass tattoo I’ve ever gotten, from my friend Bobbie (@noizecricket on Instagram) in Frankfurt Germany today.
The funny thing is, if you ran into her on the street, you’d never guess she packs a punch and could through some massive ink-pain your way.
Turns out she’s alot like this this city I love, Frankfurt. Feel free to visit it thinking it can fit in a nice box, but be prepared for more complexity than you could have planned for.

Is Aphelwein In Frankfurt A Magic Cure For Jetlag In Germany?

I’ve got three hours before I need to be on an overseas flight... that’s just enough time for a conversation with Parkway Theater’s new owners Eddie Landenberger & Ward Johnson to ask them why they’re going through the trouble of projecting 35mm films in 2019. The Best... AND WORST question I get all the time in reference to this podcast and how they may help you in starting your next creative endeavor.Patina Park is the Chair of the Metro Urban Indian Directors and executive director of the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center.
Whatever happened to that Minneapolis homeless encampment (or “Tent City” as it became known) before it’s population seemingly disappeared overnight? Is it Indian… Native American… First Nationals… what’s the proper term nowadays? Speaking of modern times, I keep seeing blond girls showing up to music festivals wearing traditional headdresses and bikinis, what’s the Native American society feel about that?
This week, Rob sits down with Patina Park over coffee to talk about these thing and much, much more in possibly the most important conversation he’s had yet.

I enjoy bluegrass music but I know NOTHING about it. Fortunately for me, my friend Nic Hentges happens to be the vice president of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association and is going to be playing a concert not too far from me this evening. I’m willing to sound like an idiot in front of a friend if it means diving deep and learning more about this gorgeous musical genre.

“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY #12 Introducing a new (possibly regular) installment I'm calling "In Praxia" which is latin for "putting into action or practice." As I continue to interview guests on the podcast, I'll be trying out advice they've given or things they recommend and sharing my discoveries with you.
In Question 49, Ian Allison talked about the freedom of traveling with limited gear and clothing and washing your laundry in the sink. I went out and bought some of the clothes he like, wore them multiple days in a row, made Sarah smell them each day, and washed like he does... here's what I think...

I met up with singer songwriter Ben Rosenbush in his greenroom before sound-checking at his album release concert with with his band Ben Rosenbush And The Brighton. I didn’t want to have your standard conversation, asking all the standard questions one asks when someone releases an album. What inspired these songs? Why’d you name this album the way you did? Hard pass. I want to know what it felt like.“Give Us This Day Our Daily Guinness” - DAY 10
This past week, my curiosity led me to giving a relationship another go. It was a rough breakup, we haven't been on speaking terms, but... I may be willing to give the relationship another chance... Because of this change of heart, it led me to finding out about a Non-Profit here in Minnesota who's main goal is to help musicians have more successful careers. I'm a musician. I live in Minnesota. I want a succesful career... why have I never heard about the Minnesota Music Coalition before? Funny how things work out, I have a feeling this short conversation may lead to a longer one in the future. Thanks Ellen Stanley for taking the time to talk today, Summit Brewery for hosing the event and Adam Levy, Barb Byrnstad and Ken Brahmstedt for the CRUSHING instrumental concert. What's the perfect question to ask when sitting down at a new cocktail bar for the first time? What happens to a cocktail lounge when MN Legislation says you can only serve alcohol you make on the premises... and people show up asking for the classics? I stop by Lawless Distillery to learn more about their "Beach Club" release... but I ended up finding about far more.

Ice is actually involved) But here's the real kicker: Tradition is to heat up an iron rod till it gets red hot and 'poke' your beer by sticking it in for a split second. The reaction is an instant boiling frothy head, a toasty aroma and the rest of the beer stays cold. I've never seen it done in person, so when Sarah found out Joel Scott at Northbound in South Minneapolis was doing it this afternoon... we had to check it out. ------------------------------ Call The Official Podcast Hotline: (612) 584-9330 Visit Recording Locations: www.thecuriouspod.com/map Subscribe on iTunes: www.thecuriouspod.com/itunes Subscribe via RSS: www.thecuriouspod.com/rss Like us on Facebook: www.thecuriouspod.com/facebook Follow us on Instagram: www.thecuriouspod.com/instagram Gregorian Chant Recording Courtesy Of: Darren Curtis

Mark Heimermann is one of the most brilliant song-writers, producers and mentors that I’ve had the honor of getting to work with. Producing, writing and touring with artists like Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Jaci Velazquez and DC Talk, Mark seems to ,seemingly single-handedly, be responsible for creating the soundtrack of my earlier years while growing up in a home that only allowed listening to 'christian’ music. Why would someone at the height of their career and success decide to completely change directions and move away from Nashville? Why does Mark feel like being a ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ in music is beneficial? And, above all else, I’ve struggled so hard to find certainty in life and ‘figure’ this whole music thing out. Peter Himmelman is a "man of many talents and accomplishments who is known to those who have heard of him, but haven’t heard him, as Bob Dylan’s son-in-law.” That said, Peter first got on Rob’s radar not because of his acclaimed song-writing career or the fact that he was the musical composer on FOX’s American Drama Series: Bones, but as an author. In 2015, when Rob returned home from a dizzying world tour and found himself in a bit of an existential crisis when it came to his career and art, he stumbled on a book called “Let Me Out” written by Peter. Jordan Walker is a photographer, entrepreneur, musician, creative thinker, and a close friend of mine. He’s the CEO of Narrate Studios and if you’ve been following the podcast, you’ve seen his work because he took all the press and artwork photos for the podcast. This episode is specifically for anyone who finds themselves thinking that being creative and being intentional seem like binary opposites and wishes they were able to find a way to connect that gap. I sat down with Jordan to ask him about the balance he’s found being a creative person but also an intentional leader in the business side of his compony to see if he has any tactical advice and action steps you can put into place wherever you are in your creative journey. In this convo we talk about: -Capsule Wardrobes -Decision Fatigue (the reason I started wearing all black a couple years ago and still do to this day) -The difference between working “in” a business and “on” your business What a SWOT analysis and Mission Statement are and how creatives can use them to find focus and clarity in what they do Recording Location: Parallel Coffee, Minneapolis, MN For Links, Guest’s Info, and Show Notes VISIT: www.thecuriouspod.com/ Want to leave a message to be played on the podcast? Paul Crilly owns one of my favorite Irish pubs in Minneapolis, Morrissey’s. If you know me, you know I love Ireland and Irish culture. I set out to have a fun conversation about St. Patrick’s Day and ended up having a far deeper convo than I was expecting. What’s it REALLY like to grow up in Northern Ireland during “The Troubles”? What’s it like to move to America when you’re 19? And what make’s Irish Pubs so much more inviting than your typical bar? A year and a half ago, I saw a documentary called “Bronies: The extremely unexpected adult fans of My Little Pony” and ever since I started this podcast, I knew I wanted to sit down someone who considered themselves a Brony. When three of Minnesota’s experts on the topic agreed to indulge my curiosity over some of Minneapolis’ best cider, I thought I was in for a crash course about the fandom. Instead… what I got was a conversation that went way deeper. Community, gender-stereotypes, the internet as a tool (not a substitute) for meaningful social interactions and self-confidence were just a few of the topics we dove into. Leave any stereotype that gallops into your head at the door, pull up a bar stool, pour yourself a cider and listen in... Ever leave hanging out with someone and getting frustrated because you felt like you weren’t fully yourself around them? Did you used to think that one day all your insecurities would just disappear and you would become super confident? Ever have a hard time forgiving your past self? Me too. This one’s for you. Kevin Welch is is the owner and head brewer of Minneapolis’ Boom Island Brewing Company. Sound familiar? I interviewed his wife Qiuxia. (Question 26 // Does Craft Beer Belong To White Men?) As a professional french horn player for the Minnesota Orchestra turned brewery owner, Kevin is passionate about both beer and music, however, the real reason I sat down with him is because of his passion to make both of those worlds as accessible as possible for the world to enjoy. Join me on a snowy winter’s night as I get out of the bitter cold to sit down with Kevin in his glowing warm brewery over one of his freshly brewed Belgian beers. My research for this episode began months ago when I heard a statistic saying that the Super Bowl is one of the single largest events where human trafficking happens in the U.S. each year. With the Super Bowl happening [this year] just a few miles from where Sarah and I live, my original title was going to be “What is Minneapolis doing to fight against human trafficking during Super Bowl LII?” In my research, I stumbled across a website that talked about ‘HT’ as an ongoing problem in Minnesota and their goal of bringing awareness to it by organizing a 5k for the past couple years and an additional “Virtual 5k” right before the Super Bowl. My curiosity was sparked even more when I found out that the organization was started by a 16yr old. I sat down over coffee with Kaiya Woller to learn more about ‘Human Trafficking’, what led her to start this, and what it’s like being a girl growing up living downtown Minneapolis. Qiuxia Welch, with her husband Kevin, owns Boom Island Brewing Co in Minneapolis, MN. I sat down over beers (her beers in fact) to hear her tell her life story and to find out what it’s been like to be a female minority in multiple industries. From China to America; from being a professional classical musician to owning a brewery, this ended up being an eye-opening conversation that I hope encourages us all to be slower to stereotype the people we meet. There’s a lot of noise out there when it comes to people talking about their political opinions right now, and rightfully so! This has been a crazy year. Unfortunately, half the time (especially when it comes to Facebook and Social Media) it seems like people aren’t trying to have a healthy conversation or debate and more trying to figure out if you agree with them so they can decide to keep you as a friend. Can we have quality interactions with people that disagree with us while still holding to the relationship AND our convictions? Are we steadily isolating ourselves from anyone that disagrees with us? How can art impact politics? And what happens when the most impactful album I’ve heard all year… is a Political EP?? I grabbed coffee with my friend André Rodriguez a month ago to see if he could answer some of my questions. Like the music you heard in this episode? I get asked quite a bit about a story some of you have heard me allude to in parts of these interviews about a life “freak out” I had last year when it came to my career in music. Exactly one year later, I’ve decided to sit down and tell the story about a bucket list made in a Smurf-blue house; The 2 times I turned 30; the secret to my landing a gig flying in private jets and a New Years Day that happened in November. Curious? Trade your glass of Guinness in for a cup of coffee and I’ll fill you in...
Danny Hoyt (@dannyhoyt) is a writer, producer and network television host for the likes of National Geographic, Fox, CBS, NFL, while still finding time to make it back home to LA each weekend to live host for the LA Chargers. At least, that’s what anyone with an internet connection sees… Anyone that knows Danny personally knows that his passion is far greater than just becoming a famous face on TV. We met back in the day studying at the same University and I’m not sure if I’ve ever met someone as quick witted, comfortable in an circumstance you put him or as magnetic. I had a chance to sit down with Danny while he was in town and our conversation ended up being one that would inspire just about anyone to get off their butt and start making things happen for themselves.

Taylor Johnson (@wildponytj) is widely known for his work (as a songwriter & electric guitar) with the likes of Lorde, Frank Ocean and Phil Wickham. Take it from me, whether you’re playing music with him on stage or talking soccer in the green-room, Taylor is the real deal. Ever since we met in D.C. a few years back, I’ve referred to Taylor as “The Professional” so we decided to sit down to talk about the most frequently asked question any professional musician gets constantly asked "How’d you land that gig?” Even though this ended up being a very music-focused convo, He shares some great insight for anyone who aspires to create anything with other people. In this conversation, we talk about: -How Taylor got into songwriting and his approach to co-writing -How co-writing is like improv theatre ("don’t say ‘no’ ") -The importance of “hearing someone’s idea out.” -Taylor’s advice for the need to come in with tons of ideas while still holding them loosely when creating with other people. -Synergy in creating -Actively putting yourself in situations where you’re going to be stretched creatively Recording Location: Brit’s Pub, Downtown Minneapolis Drink: Old Speckled Hen (Me) Jack & Coke (Taylor) For Links, Guest’s Info, and Show Notes VISIT: www.thecuriouspod.com Want to leave a message to be played on the podcast? Part 2 or our conversation ended up being a little bit more creativity and music focused. In our second and final part, we talk about: -The importance of a balanced life -How daily rituals can BENEFIT our creativity -Learning when to take a break instead of trying to ‘push through’ (I freakin love Matt’s ‘Round Peg, Square Hole’ concept) - “Thin Slicing” - Masha and the bear (on ice)

Elliott Blaufuss is an artist. Music just happens to be the medium with which he creates his art. Eric Pierson is a television, film and commercial actor who recently started showing his prowess in the directing world. Some of his recent film credits include the Netflix Original Series "Lady Dynamite”, "Driven By Bacon” and "Wilson" starring Woody Harrelson & Laura Dern. If you haven’t Netflix-and-Chilled over those yet, you’ve most likely seen his bearded face on more than one commercial. Beyond all that, Eric is known to me as someone who thinks deeply about life and is a great storyteller. I knew you would enjoy hearing what he has to say and he didn’t disappoint… and I may or may not have laughed so hard I cried for the first time on the podcast. Enjoy. Take a moment and think of how much in your life that has taken place in a coffee shop… My first hang-out with my now wife Sarah was at a coffee shop. I’ve been kicked out of bands, asked to be IN bands, early mornings, late nights… and the list goes on. Caleb Garn is a founder of one of the greatest coffee shops west of the Mississippi: Five Watt Coffee in Minneapolis, MN. Sit down with Caleb and one thing is clear, this musician/entrepreneur has a passion for the american coffee shop and even more so for the people in them. Don’t be mistaken, this conversation isn’t just for people who love coffee and music… (if you don’t… maybe I’m not the podcast for you BTW) we dive into what it means to be a human and what Caleb calls “Movie Moments" that could change the way you look at the world. Just your everyday conversation over coffee.. In this episode we talk about: -Coffee (the history of 3rd wave coffee and the magic of coffee shops) -How Caleb’s first real recording session in Minneapolis ended up being with the boys from Dr. Mambo’s Combo and Mick Sterling (MPLS Music Legends) -Us both moving here and experiencing Minneapolis for the first time -Music School -Defining Success (“Knowing where you want to go and getting there”) -"Movie Moments" -Caleb’s obsessively inspiring coffee shop notebook taking -The 3 ‘Waves’ of coffee -Deciding to be Inclusive instead of Exclusive. -How the world is “Inside Out” not “Outside In" -Caleb’s personal deffinition of success Quotes from Caleb that stuck out to me: “Treat every customer like you’re meeting your significant other’s parents for the first time” "Always find a way to say ‘YES’." "A cup of coffee has the power to change the world and the only thing that connects people as much as coffee is music.” "Anything is obtainable. The price is how hard you want to work for it.” Recording Location: Five Watt Coffee, South Minneapolis Drink: Five Watt Cold Press (@ 9pm… what was I thinking?) Tyler Burkum (@tylerburkum) is an internationally touring and studio guitarist (Mat Kearney, Leagues, The Cactus Blossoms, Ingrid Michaelson... just to name a few) He’s a brilliant composer/songwriter too… but I didn’t interview him because of all that nonsense. I played with Tyler a few months back and as soon as we got to talking, I knew that I needed to sit down one-on-one over beers and chat. The way this guy approaches life and thinks about things will inspire you to want to be more open to what life has to offer even if you’re not a musician. In this episode we talk about: -Being cool with not being the right person for every gig -Realizing that being present in the moment is more important than anything else -Tyler’s experience being picked up at 17 to go on a rock tour -Overseas tattoo stories -The enjoyment of traveling with music and the education of traveling the world. How it changes the way you view life and culture -Deciding to be someone who says yes -Letting your mind remind your heart to ease it’s insecurities. -the pointlessness of being competitive in music -Producing yourself: The need to accept who you are and who you’re not. Ian Allison (@ianmartinallison) is known to most as a studio and touring bassist for the likes of Eric Hutchinson, Jeremy Messersmith and many many more but to me, he’s a mentor. I first met Ian in 2004, studying my undergrad in music performance in Minneapolis under his bass tutelage. For a few years following, I learned far more than music from Ian and he became one of the most influential people of my adult life thus far. Sit down with Ian in any scenario and the convo is going to end up going deeper than you expected and this was no exception.. Years ago, He actually introduced me to the Minneapolis staple of a breakfast spot known as The Bad Waitress so it felt only fitting that I met up with him on a Tuesday morning for some coffee and conversation. In this episode we talk about: -What makes someone an Influencer? -Shortchanging your creative voice -the lowdown and proper mindset of approaching music gear and art: “Kurt Cobain and the Fender jaguar guitar” -Why asking someone what gear they used on a session is the wrong question. (and what you should be asking) -Ian’s story about taking a lesson as a teen with Brian Bromberg -The need to embrace your past. (Everyone you think is ’cool’ now, was once a Weird Al fan) -The need to not feel embarrassed about your enthusiasm and being true to yourself -Why, if he could eat sushi professionally, Ian would never touch a bass again (maybe) -Playing what what gets you pumped, in music, but making sure it isn’t coming from a place of boredom and is serving the song -Embracing the right music for the right context // looking past yourself and your own esthetic likes and dislikes. -Ian’s last min ‘dan wilson’ story. “NEVER SAY NO AGAIN!!!” For Links, Guest’s Info And Show Notes Visit: www.thecuriouspod.com
Nick Kosevich (@nickkosevich) is an international 'Cocktail Consultant', a world class bartender and the co-founder of Bittercube Bitters. Even though Bittercube can be found at every bar I’ve been to in the Twin Cities, I took notice when I met a bartender in Louisiana raving about them years ago while on the road with music. I decided to sit down with Nick to find out how his journey took him from wanting to be an actor/stand-up comedian to being a successful entrepreneur and international cocktail judge and to figure out what I can learn from his career in cocktails and apply it to mine in the world of music. In this episode: -Our good friends Jorge and Janelle Figueroa join Sarah and I at the dining room table for cocktails, wine, beer and end up talking about the importance of 'Staying Curious' as we get older. -I give a call to this week's Guinness Giveaway winner (Clark Strasburg) at the end of the episode -I end up making the best 'Sour' Cocktail of my life thanks to Bittercube's help. In my interview with Nick we talk about: - Why Nick prefers not to be called a mixologist - What is a Cocktail Consultant? - Balancing being a good parent and being on the road for work - How is bartending alot like being a musician? - How to stay humble while still having confidence (“bartender bravado”) - The misconceptions of ‘pre-mixed’ cocktails - The awesomeness of the hit tv show 'Cheers' - Not trying to be a ‘Trend Setter’ but focusing on constantly being 'Forward Thinking' - The importance of confidence - How Bittercube Bitters got started - Even though it looks like people are successful overnight... that’s not how it works - Not worring about the competition, follow your own goals, run your own race
Alex Grahmann (@agrahmann) is a master story teller, an international Lego® building champion and one of the best public speakers I’ve ever heard. Steve Goold is known to the public as an internationally touring, session drummer for the likes of: Sara Bareilles, Ben Rector, Paul Baloche, Sara Groves, Owl City (before my time with them) Mat Kearney, Joel Hanson, The Honeydogs, Go Fish, The Blenders and the list goes on…. To me, Steve is known as a friend of wisdom and depth. I feel like we could start talking about fart densities and somehow he could tie it in to your purpose in life. In our conversation we talk about the things that you don’t get to see on social media. The real reason he was in town last month, the death of his father this year, the eventual death of YOUR father someday, why musicians that play together form a bond like no other vocation, and how his project Masss came to be. Stick around to the end of the episode and hear Masss’ newest single IN FULL. Joel Bowers is only a couple of years older than me but I view him as a mentor. As a multi instrumentalist, he’s been around the block a few times when it comes to gigging. As a man with dual citizenship and someone who needed to replace his passport twice before college, he’s been around the world a few times. Joel’s seen more out of life than some people could see in two lifetimes and is one of the first people I go to when I need advice. In our conversation, we talk about practical tools he’s found to retrain his brain to lean into gratitude and he opens up about the death of his mother just months ago. I don’t take conversations and openness like this lightly. This conversation is a gift from Joel to me, to share with you. DawnL Ojeda is more than an amazing vocalist. I knew from the moment I heard a portion of her life's story, while in a green room at a gig no less, that I had to hear ALL of it one on one for myself. It’s a story of a talented young girl surrounded by people who want her to live her life by THEIR ideas of success and how she grows up learning how to use what she’s been given to make other people’s lives better. It’s a story of finding yourself, a story of strength, and defining what success means for YOU! I’m so inspired by DawnL and have a feeling you will be too.
