What is a picture book?
A picture book is a work which combines literary eloquence with artistic merit–words and illustrations–working together to tell a story. Generally, picture books are written with 200-800 words (depending on the age of the targeted audience) on 28-32 pages. Historically, picture books have been written to the preschool through mid-elementary audience, yet these masterfully crafted gems speak to the hearts of readers of all ages.
Wordless picture books
Wordless picture books are just that, a book without words. The illustrations alone tell the story, unless, of course, the person holding the book chooses to imagine and craft the text. One of the Bastian’s favorite wordless picture books is Jerry Pinkney’s extraordinary The Lion and the Mouse, a retelling of Aesop’s classic tale. This treasure won the 2010 Caldecott Medal for its illustrative excellence.

Cheryl’s insight into how you can take one book and move it through different perspectives, art modalities and comparisons with other literature will make you look at those little books in a whole new way.
Fostering Memories
We each shared a few stories of memories we had around a picture book. Books can become part of the fabric of your family. Cheryl shared her memories as a child at the library hearing Blueberries for Sal. She connected with Sal in a way that helped her to learn empathy.
Holly shares fond memories of bonding with her boys over picture books and a child’s way of wanting to hear them over and over again!

Severe weather in the RV can be scary! Don’t be scared, be prepared! The Roadschool Moms discuss in depth, more than 20 precautions to take during severe weather seasons in Episode #181 of Roadschool Moms Radio. This broadcast gives specific advice for those living the fulltime RV lifestyle; however, many topics discussed are beneficial to Roadschool Moms no matter where in the world you are!
Before You Hit the Road
There are several ways to arm your family with the proper tools and precautionary measures to deal with inclement weather factors that may arise down the road. The key to this part of being prepared is to be proactive. A few things to do before you hit the road include
Finally, before you take off on the next road trip adventure, talk with all passengers, especially the kiddos, to demonstrate at least two (2) ways out of the RV in case of an emergency. A final inspection of the RV, tow vehicle, or toad is also non-negotiable. The last checkmark on the list to playing it safe is to put back sufficient cash to cover basic expenses including fuel, food, and accommodations for several days in case the family is displaced due to an accident or weather-related situation.
Severe Weather in the RV
Severe weather is scary no matter where in the world you live. Fulltime RVing families face even more challenges in weather-related situations. Often, RV travel takes place in regions of the country that are unfamiliar. Someone who grew up in Colorado may have no clue what to look for during hurricane season in Florida. A few no-brainer tips to remember are
Keep a mobile device charged at all times
Check satellite radio often for weather updates
If near the coast, be aware of tropical storms brewing
Keep fuel, propane, and water tanks full when weather predictions are unstable
It is imperative to be weather aware when you are on the road. If you sense a change, pull over to a safe location and check the changing weather conditions. Remember, an RV is not a safe location during severe weather. Finding safe shelter is a must to avoid the risk of injury o even death. Retail stores, the library, a hospital, the post office, or any structure that you can reach with ample parking is good for an emergency. If it becomes necessary to pull over on the road, do not park next to a guard rail or any obstruction that will keep you from exiting the RV.
Take No Chances
The best advice is to take no chances during even the possibility of severe weather. Never set up camp next to creeks, rivers, or waterways. Awareness of how the surroundings can change in a flash flood is key such as near mountain slopes, canyons, or wash areas in the desert. Always retract your awing when you are parked if bad weather is in the forecast. This is also a good time to empty the black tank while making sure fresh water and fuel tanks are full. Analyze at least two (2) ways out of the RV site if downed power lines become an issue. Make mental notes of the best way and the backup plan for evacuation if necessary. Attending a homeschool convention can be sensory overload. Plan ahead for what your intentions are for the event.
Is your spouse attending or going with another mom?
We recommend making a plan and not taking your children into the exhibit hall. Why?
You can’t concentrate on why you are there.
They get distracted, hungry, irritated and bored.
You leave frustrated and didn’t accomplish your goals for the trip.
Do your homework
Research vendors ahead of time. Make a list of who you want to see. Map out your route and gather information to look at later. Leaving room for a variable is important.

Mary Beth and Holly share that their number one reason for halting the outdoor fun due to bad weather is the clean up afterward. Moms have this vision of the end in mind. Where dirt, mud, snow, and water end up on their floors along with a pile of clothes that need washing.
The Memories
Holly shares fond memories of playing in the rain at her grandparent’s house. Mary Beth loves to recall how she enjoys hearing the sound of the rain on the roof. Both share childhood memories of storms and hurricanes where everyone piles in the middle of the living room and plays cards to the lantern light. This memory seemed universal to wherever you live.
Free Yourself
Let go, mamas! Free yourself and your children. Have a few tricks up your sleeve to let go and go outside. Keeping a few items stashed in the garage will make it easy and fun to take a walk in the rain, make some snow queens. We even suggest hot cocoa and a read aloud under a park pavilion.
Invest
Invest in a little fun with your kids when they least expect it. Say yes to getting out of your comfort zone. We share some indoor activities along with movies and audio books to keep it real. A lightning storm is no time to head outdoors.

We giggled too much, (edited some out) hit some weighty topics and shared some truth about the baggage we carry into motherhood.
In the end, we all agree that you shouldn’t set yourself up for failure instead, give yourself GRACE.

Mary Beth begins by sharing she is the culprit for wanting to get it all the curriculum done. Not her children. Holly has been down that road many times before of feeling like she is in a curriculum crunch and says she will not fall victim to that this year.
Convention Season is Coming!
4:45 Convention season is coming and not everyone likes the convention halls but it is a great place to see curriculum up close and get new ideas. Mary Beth says FPEA was the first one she attended a few years ago and after a brief visit to the exhibit hall her kids were over it. Mary Beth was caught up in the shiny boxes and was quickly adding to their plan. It was her kids that called her out on adding too many things to the curriculum plate.
5:30 Holly shares how we should take a good look at what we already have and see that so many great companies actually add in literature, history, and science altogether. Companies like Notgrass and Apologia have a plethora of extra stuff if you choose to add it in. Holly picks one and rotates.
You will lose your mind if you try to do it all. It’s important to take your time with what you are working on an not rush through your child’s learning.

Living Simply
(4:45) ” I am beginning to learn that is is the sweet simple things in life that are the real things after all.” Life doesn’t have to be complicated. We have fallen victim to having to entertain our children which causes the “I’m bored!” syndrome.
Hard Work
(8:10) Teaching alongside our children will give them a greater sense of self and build character. Chores and life skills are a big part of growing up.
“Every job is good if you do your best and work hard, a man who works hard stinks only to those who have nothing to do but smell.”
Family
(10:15) The family was the heart of the pioneer days. They relied on each other for survival, social activities, food, and shelter. A reference and description of the sugaring off party in the first book, Little House in the Big Woods brings thoughts of close family gatherings.

Being Enough
Holly shares the solar eclipse story she mentioned on the last episode. Her family was caught in a lightning storm on a boat after the epic solar event. The events that transpired afterward sound like chaos. In the end, she realizes it was a lesson in perspective. While everyone has a different perspective on how we fit into the world, it often leads to the question Am I enough?
(7:30) Mary Beth and Holly converse about the mom-struggle with being enough in today’s culture with social media pressure to always do more. Mary Beth tells us that “you are the example for your children” (good, bad or indifferent.) She reminds to always be mindful of our actions. Holly shares the idea that moms are told to do it all, but at what price?
Mary Beth uses an example of being a ball field mom quickly morphs into a whole job for moms who really just want to watch their kids play ball. Holly shares a similar story of her experience with soccer.

Moms Without a Cape
(11:30)Are we being pushed to be self-sufficient supermoms? Mary Beth confesses her issues with priorities. She is a solo mom, not by choice, and juggles work, school, and home life. Admitting she is motivated by finances right now, tears begin to fall as Holly shares her take on what the family dynamics look like from the other side. Mary Beth opens up about being vulnerable to the super mom syndrome and not choosing the right road for her family during times of chaos that lead to stress.
(16:45) The RSM duo talk about words of wisdom from Kristen, the RSM prayer team leader. Further, they share her advice that to ask God to go before you in daily struggles. It may not lead to perfect days but will smooth out the rough edges every time.
Somehow society has taken motherhood and twisted it to be a side note of greater things. Mary Beth tells mothers to take off their cape and let go of the supermom role. Much of this broadcast refers back to a previous show about comparison and how saying NO leads to peace in your home. Are you giving away your best to everyone else but your family?
(24:00) Final thoughts from these veteran homeschool moms including the idea to be present with your time. Do not regret yesterday. Do not compromise today on the plan for more time tomorrow. Holly puts this into perspective with the sudden passing of her cousin, Wesley. She describes the beautiful afternoon they shared a few months ago as they set everything aside for a cousin get-together lunch.
Making time to be present, not multitasking, allows these opportunities to be treasured memories.

Creating a Home Mindset
The easiest way to create a home mindset is to make home a priority no matter what your location. Traditions are built on values and experiences. Family and home are wherever you are with each other; therefore, it is easy to adjust your home mindset wherever in the world you are. Create a home base so that your children have a sense of security and a safe place to form their identity. At home, kiddos will learn life skills and build layers for the foundation that will sustain their life for the years to come.
Holly remembers a time when her boys were younger and being on the go was part of their daily routine. She correlates this time that led to disciplinary issues and exhaustion in her household. Although it was an unpopular decision with some friends and family, she made the decision to step back. Less daily activity and earlier nighttime routines made for a home mindset.
Mary Beth reminds listeners to let the seasons of your life help mold your family and not define them. Build a structure to your day that matches your family values and goals. Setting priorities and investing time wisely throughout the day is crucial to creating a home mindset wherever in the world you are.
Home is Not a Pit Stop
Holly reveals that Morning Time is her favorite time of the homeschool day; even though it doesn’t mean that everyone sits quietly. Instead, her boys are usually whittling a stick or sorting fishing lures while listening to lessons. She strives daily to make home their center.
The Road Trip Teacher crew is also a big fan of Morning Time. Mary Beth talks about other favorite routines that create the structure in their roadschool week:
These veteran homeschool mamas point out that as your family matures, so does your family foundation. Layers are woven together by blood, sweat, and tears. They are strengthened by good times and bad experiences. A good rule to remember is that together is better.

The Busyness Myth
Busy means productive. NOT! The real truth over the busyness myth goes back to a simple idea. Quality vs. Quantity. Successful homeschool moms agree that one productive, intentional homeschool day out performs three unproductive, forced days on a hamster wheel.
Afraid your kids are missing something? So what. These roadschool mamas have an “all for one and one for all attitude.” MB and Holly agree that supporting each other as a family is a good priority to set for family values. Set priorities and BE accomplished.
How do you begin to unravel being busy? What will kids do with free time? Be still and let them discover interests and talents on their own. Tackle business and find white space in your week. MB says don’t over complicate life. Find what gives you peace to find the priority in your life. Does the extras in your schedule enhance the foundation that is important to your family?
Find a way to closely examine in the layers of your life. Holly challenges listeners to peel back these layers and find a way to free up an entire day of your household schedule this week. What can you take away to find space and time and be still with your family: What you will discover is your family rhythm for finding perfect peace.

Comparing apples to apples in your everyday life may seem innocent. But the harsh reality is that comparison is a sin. Why? Because it leads to envy. These veteran homeschooling moms point out early in the broadcast that if you are jealous of the mama next door whose kiddos are playing the violin while reading a Shakespeare classic then you probably don’t have a lot of love in your heart.

What does this mean? The world is obsessed with focusing on this temporary, external instead of reaching deep inside to find joy from within.

Creating New Traditions in Six Steps
Family traditions create wonderful memories for children to pass down to their children. But what happens to holiday traditions when you sell it all and go on the road to live in a few hundred square feet? Repurposing and remodeling these comfortable and cozy memories if you leave your expectations at the door. Creating new traditions is the best way to celebrate a new lifestyle while creating new memories.
Create a new tradition around a common idea or event is. Such as, going to see The Nutcracker or a version of Scrooge. Christmas programs such as those are live productions in all areas of the country. So create the tradition around that one idea, going to see Nutcracker for example, no matter where you are in the country. Expand on that to fit your family. Maybe you make lasagna or some family favorite meal before you go. Or, maybe you find the best deep dish pizza in town wherever you are located before going. An alternative to this is going TO THE MOVIES on Christmas Day, the day after Christmas – each year, a few movies are released on Christmas Day. That is another easy way to create a new tradition. The point is: Find an idea and make it your own.

5 Easy Steps to an Instant Pot Thanksgiving
Space is limited for creating a holiday dinner in the RV kitchen but the menu doesn’t have to be.The only way to serve holiday dinner for a crowd, or even your family, with no stress is to put together the plan as if it were a puzzle. With planning and the right tools, a delicious Thanksgiving menu will come together in 5 easy steps using the Instant Pot and a few other must have items.
Plan the menu and organize pre-dinner tasks
Prepare any side dishes or desserts in the days before the holiday
Ready any ingredients possible ahead of time
Set early morning cooking on auto pilot
Make the last preparations and serve
Holiday Dinner in an Instant
The first assessment to a successful holiday dinner includes the number of people to serve and the dinner menu at hand. Write the final menu on anything from a Post-it note to an Excel spreadsheet. Think of this as the four corners to the holiday dinner puzzle.
Next, put together all the background pieces of the puzzle a/k/a the Thanksgiving Feast. Gather together any common ingredients that must be used for recipes. For example, if you need diced celery for the dressing and the apple salad, do that a few days prior to the holiday and place the proper amount for each recipe in separate zip lock bags. Look for any side dishes on the menu that can be prepared ahead of time such as the deviled eggs or sweet potato pudding. Insert Instant Pot Thanksgiving shortcut here: Pressure cook eggs for 5 minutes, quick release and a cold water bath equals perfect hard-boiled eggs. Likewise, dishes such as green bean casserole can be prepared in advance, baked until almost done, and finished (the last 15 minutes) right before dinner is served. Prepare desserts such as pies and cakes in the days ahead of the meal.
The star of the Thanksgiving table is usually a roasted turkey. Think of this as the final centerpiece to the puzzle of the big picture. Instant Pot turkey will come out moist and delicious. The best part? Pressure cook the turkey in the early morning hours of the holiday before the day is hectic. Holiday ham Instant Pot style is another win for the main event to the table.

Roadschool plans for next year is the hot topic for Episode #143 from the Roadschool Moms team. Kimberly Travaglino, co-founder of Fulltime Families, broadcasts live from on location along the banks of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The over the road duo reflects on last week’s Great American Eclipse 2017 and recaps upcoming events for the rest of the year. KT is the first to reveal her roadschool plans for the next year. While she has considered many shiny new avenues of curricula options, she decides the time is right for TJEd (Thomas Jefferson Education,) a curriculum that she has had her eye on for a few years. Timing is everything and this year the Travs will be using Tjed to guide their upcoming learning adventures. KT points out this method of homeschooling is a classical one. It employs leadership skills and other key foundations for an education rich in history and other key elementars to this philosophy. In addition, lesson plans in KT’s rig this coming year also include Mystery Science and Saxton Math.
Next up is the roadschool plans for MB’s crew. Morning Time will play a big role in the Road Trip Teacher’s school day for the upcoming roadschool year. Plans are mapped out for bible, character building, geography, music, art, and foreign language. The rest of the roadschool day in this rolling homeschool will be customized to each kiddo. The highschooler will be using Exploring America for 4 full credit this year covering history, geography, bible, and American literature. Teaching Texbooks will be used for Algebra 2 while science will be covered with the Experience Astronomy course that was highlighted in an earlier Roadschool Moms podcast. On an elective note, this roadschooler is building a business plan for a t-shirt design business that will receive a full credit after its completion (that includes a semester’s worth of economics from Notgrass History.) Two middle schoolers in this rig will follow a similar schedule using America the Beautiful in its full capacity for the study of history, geography, bible, and American literature. Teaching Textbooks will be used for math and the Apologia Creation series for science. The Road Trip Teacher is a big fan of Evan Moor and will use different workbooks to focus on certain areas specific to each student. The third grader on the Roadschool 101 crew will be using Time4Learning for much of next year’s lessons plans. She uses interactive notebooks and notebooking binders for each of those elementary subjects.

College transition from high school is on the table in episode #144 that comes to you live from the Roadschool Moms team on the road. The ORT dynamic duo are joined tonight by veteran roadschooling mom, Tara Weed who recently graduated her son from high school and beamed with pride as he went off to college without a hitch!
The big transition. As homeschoolers, we face what seems like a constant bombarding of questions regarding the success of our roadschoolers pending success, or lack thereof. Do they have friends? Are they get the proper “socialization?” Do they measure up to public school kids? In an answer, we really don’t know. Shockingly, the same is true of our public school mamas. When it comes down to it, only you know what’s best for your family. Building the confidence in yourself as a roadschool mom and giving your roadschoolers the tools to build their foundation for the same is critical to the layers of education built during these years. This episode brings specific examples and loads of encouragement to help navigate the waters from roadschool to college.
Throughout the podcast, Tara speaks about her son Brennan’s recent experience, of adjusting to college life while joining the National Guard to pay for it. She reflects back on their decision to unschool their boys and the benefits that have came from that positive experience over the years. Tara admits that at one point, her son wasn’t sure college was the next step in his education; however, this roadschool mom kept the roadschool journey on a road that could easily turn in any direction.
Many recommendations come out of this positively powerhouse packed episode to recognize the value of a roadschooling lifestyle. Tara reflects on how her son prepared for the SAT (through Khan Academy.) She reveals that this online resource bridged the gap in the areas where her roadschooler needed help (specifically in math.) She further revealed that taking a few classes at a community college that aligned with their travels also helped prepare her son for the steps necessary to successfully enroll in a college of his choice. Tara advises roadschool moms to encourage their homeschooler to picture himself in the college or university where he sees himself. Wherever that is, do the research to market your roadschooler to that institution. Make that school want your roadschooler as much as she wants to be admitted there. Much of Tara’s advise is common sense; however, her genuine reflection is a breath of fresh air in this daunting subject. There is not just one indicator of whether your 4, 5 or 6 year old sunshine is ready for official kindergarten or not. And guess what the best test you can give him or her to find out? You guessed it: none. Try not to base the start of your littles entire formal education on one pivotal circumstance. Instead, consider these six areas to evaluate:
Is he eager to explore and discover new things? Does she ask questions and have an enthusiasm for learning? Does he have the drive to keep on a task even when it is difficult? If the answer to those questions are yes, then you probably have a child that is ready for the kindergarten learning adventure.
Does he have the desire to take responsibility for his actions, for his personal belongings? Can she follow a series of two or three directions? If he possesses self-motivation and a persistence to find out answers on his own, you probably have a kindergarten-ready kiddo.
Another good indicator if your little is ready for kindergarten is the level of communication skills. As in, can she communicate her wants and needs? Has she figured out how to express her feelings or at least recognize the difference in how she feels vs. others around her? This is a sign that language skills are growing and guidance is needed here to keep heading in the right direction.
This next one is a hard one because it is about listening. There’s not many 5 year olds that probably don’t interrupt at some point or another. But for the most part, a kindergarten ready kiddo can sit and listen to a story without interrupting. He can follow simple directions because he has honed in on his listening skills and can process that in his little brain.
Now let’s talk about a few easy things to spot in kindergardten readiness (or not!) And that is fine motor skills. If your child is comfortable writing with a pencil, penning their own name, and using scissors independently, then kindergarten activities will be a snap. They are ready for this next step.
The final thing easily identified is awareness for the alphabet and numbers. Littles that are ready for kindergarten can sing the alphabet song, count to 10, and recognize at least numbers 1 through 5 as well as a majority of the alphabet. Sure at this age, b’s and d’s are mixed up. The letter ‘p’ or the number ‘3’ might be backwards, but that’s where kindergarten curriculum can help strengthen these areas and build their confidence. The next step is learning phonics and when it clicks, you’ll have an emerging reader. This is an area that comes together differently for each and every child.

This Easter Sunday, KT and MB chat a bit about the philosophy of getting what you deserve. The philosophy in our culture teaches us that the harder we work, the more we deserve. Whether it’s a daily latte, a luxury car, that big house on the hill, or the annual fancy vacation, we believe that we are deserving of these fine things.
But, God’s Kingdom is a topsy turvy world in that we all fall short. We are all sinners and yet, we are saved by grace. While our sins earn us separation from the Lord, our Father created a way for each of us to have eternal life. Through faith, we are saved. This is not what we deserve.
This reward system is a contradiction to the everyday American idea that you work hard so you can play hard. Our culture is built on the idea that if you work hard enough, you will be rewarded with the things you so deserve. God doesn’t teach this idea. As a matter of fact, God doesn’t issue a ticket to heaven based on your work ethic. Everlasting life in His kingdom is based on one simple action. Believe.
You can’t work your way into heaven. At the end of the day, the end of your life, God does not tally up the hours you toll. He doesn’t measure your worth by anything you do at all! Instead, he gives us the opportunity to have everlasting life by believing in Him. No work involved. No merit pay. No time card needed. Your eternal vacation has already been booked! God sent his only son to pay the debt. We earn it by a following this one single command. “For whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
