How I spent my summer vacation: the podcast
Sep 25, 2021
It’s been a long hot summer, and Peter has forgotten everything about the Capitals, the NHL, hockey, and interpersonal relationships. Come along as we recap the offseason, catch up with training camp, and relearn everything like it’s Regarding Henry, an underrated Harrison Ford performance if you ask me.

Meet Peter Laviolette and the Washington Lavitals
Sep 16, 2020
Peter Laviolette has taken the reins of the Washington Capitals, ushering in the era of the Washington Lavitals. In today’s episode, Peter and Ian try to figure out what that means.

Is a sweep imminent for the Washington Capitals?
Aug 18, 2020
The Caps are in a hole, and not even a good one like Bag End. Can they escape? Probably not. But can they regain some of their dignity? Also unlikely, but let’s rant about it anyway.

RMNB Interview Series: Adam Eaton talks World Series run, Nationals’ championship celebration at Capitals game
Apr 27, 2020
During the coronavirus pandemic, I’ve been considering how I can be more of the new-media journalist I want to be and use the vast connections I’ve created over the last decade. So, with Peter’s help, I’ve created the RMNB Interview Series. Imagine a long, in-depth interview that is supplemental to the RMNB Podcast (which Peter and I will still do). It will cover topics people really care about or may not know they cared about.
My first guest is a baseball player: Nationals’ World Series champion Adam Eaton. Eaton lives in Michigan and is a huge hockey and Washington Capitals fan.
During our chat, Adam takes us behind-the-scenes of the Capitals’ Stanley Cup celebration at Nationals Park in 2018, the Nats’ World Series run, the team’s postgame celebrations (and how they compared to the Caps’), catching Ovi’s first pitch in the playoffs, and the Nats’ World Series celebration at Capital One Arena. Eaton also goes in-depth on the how and the why of the shirtless Zamboni incident and reveals never-before-known details about that night. The interview, which was only supposed to last 30-45 minutes goes over 90.

Without explanation, the Washington Capitals have suddenly become bad. In today’s podcast, Peter and Ian try to wrap their smooth smooth brains around the complicated problem of “what happens when your team starts sucking out of nowhere?”

Some tweets:
Here's the share of xG and shot attempts the Caps have owned over time. The gap between volume and quality at the end is wild. They're almost even in volume but destroyed when weighted by quality, which I think speaks to tactical dysfunction (breakaways). pic.twitter.com/5faCvzTvQl
In our latest casted pod, Ian recounts his adventure at the Laughlin Family Foundation dinner and meeting Orioles legend Brooks Robinson, we discuss the Ovi goal explosion, whether John Carlson is a dad or a bro, Samsonov vs Holtby, and what’s wrong with the power play. There’s a lot here.

We’re turning 10 years old next week, so, uh, Is Party Soon. To mark the occasion and get you psyched for it, Ian and I hit the big red button on the podcast machine.
In today’s episode: Thornton’s heel turn, MacKinnon and Alzner wanting less money, the reckoning for authority figures in hockey, aaaaand Baby Yoda.

An interview with AHL linesman Tommy George
Jul 12, 2019
Tommy Georgeis an AHL official that has local roots. Tommy played club hockey at Urbana High School in Frederick County and eventually donned the stripes in the Olympic games. He’s also done IIHF events like the World Championship. You’ve likely seen him in Hershey as a linesman during Bears games.
So naturally, I had to ask him all the important questions like What are the mean things hockey players say to each other on the ice? and What’s it like to break up a hockey fight?
Tommy also chatted about the Old Fat Bald Guys hockey tournament happening at SkateFrederick this weekend, which is for a very, very good cause.
The first 30 minutes of our conversation is focused on the OFGB tourney and our shared local roots in Frederick County. The rest of the conversation dives into what it’s like being an official. It’s a great listen. I hope you enjoy.
The 15th Annual Old Fat Bald Guys Ice Hockey Tournament will take place at Skate Frederick in Frederick, Maryland from July 12th-14th, 2019. This is a tournament for adult ice hockey players of all skill levels who have a passion for hockey, friendship, camaraderie and family. Over $40,000 has been raised through auctions held at the tournament each year benefiting various charities and non-profit organizations in and around the Frederick, Maryland community.
To honor the memory of David Anthony “Tony” Johnson, respect the wishes of his family and benefit the community, Old Fat Bald Guys Hockey will donate all proceeds from the silent auction at this year’s tournament to Platoon 22. This 501-c3 non-profit organization helps service veterans combat PTSD, and ultimately prevent these heroes from taking their own lives. The name Platoon 22 is symbolic of the estimated twenty-two U.S. service veterans who take their own lives every day due to PTSD. For more information please visit www.Platoon22.org.
We are seeking auction donors / donations, and tournament sponsors to help us raise money for Platoon 22 in memory of David Anthony “Tony” Johnson. We hope we can count on you as a sponsor or donor. We appreciate your help and support and hope to see you at the tournament!

An RMNB Independence Day news roundup podcast
Jul 04, 2019
Happy July 4, everyone! We hope you have a fun, safe day. Yummy down on some hot dogs and frothy drinks and whatever. Maybe one way to kick off the day is with this hot fresh podcast. In this episode, Peter and Ian recount all the news of the off-season. There’s a lot of it, so we had to go lightning-round mode.

P.S. sorry for my audio quality– I’ll fix it for next time, promise!
Enough time has passed that we can now talk about the end of the 2018-19 Capitals without sobbing. In this podcast, Ian and Peter discuss what went wrong for the team – but also for themselves. (Like the Caps, we’ve had some unfortunate setbacks in the past month.)
But we can also now look ahead – at a summer that will bring changes and opportunities. I’m looking forward to it.
Oh, and Ian goes off on a wild rant. So enjoy that.
p.s. after Ian and I chatted about our problems, he promptly reported the flat tire you see above. Woof. Our luck sucks.

RMNB vs Isabelle Khurshudyan vs the White Walkers
Apr 15, 2019
Isabelle Khurshudyan has been covering the Capitals for the Washington Post for several years now, but we’ve never actually spoken. Until now. After Brooks Orpik scored the OTGWG in Game Two, Peter and Izzy finally got together to discuss Caps vs Canes, why everyone loves Orpik, how Todd Reirden is different from Barry Trotz. And then, at the end, we talked about Game of Thrones or a long while. Enjoy!

What a week it’s been in the hockey world. In today’s episode of the podcast, Ian and I track back through the trade deadline with an eye on the playoff race. Plus, Manny and Bryce leave the DMV.

The trade deadline is but scant days away, so it’s time for Peter and Ian log onto the podcast one last time to ask the age-old question, are the Caps good? The team has problems — big problems — but they seem poised to make the playoffs … except Ian isn’t so sure. That, plus sleep problems and almost no esports chatter at all on the RMNB podcast.

The All-Star Game, the bye week, and looming Voldemort
Jan 28, 2019
The Caps’ bye week has come at just the right time. Ian and I have come up for air to discuss the All-Star Game, the hidden virtues of the glow puck, slump blame, and Voldemort. Plus, a short chat with a young Caps fan who was at the ASG game and still doesn’t like Crosby.

The slumpty dance is your chance to do the slump
Jan 21, 2019
With five consecutive, agonizing losses in the immediate rearview, Ian and I thought this was the perfect time to get together and discuss anything but the current slump. So here is some chat about the slump and a lot about black-suit Spider-Man, picklebacks, drinking too much soda, esports, the guitar solo in What I Got, internet ads, and the All-Star Game.

On Tuesday, Caps forward Tom Wilson was injured in a hit from Knights forward Ryan Reaves. Of the hit, Reaves said, “[Wilson] was just looking at his pass and ran into a lion in the jungle.” Except lions don’t live in jungles. Tigers and cougars and leopards and jaguars live in jungles. Everyone should know this, so Ian and I talked about this topic and only this topic for a solid hour.
