We talked about his process creating iconic LP covers for R.E.M., The Cramps, Wall Of Voodoo & The Buzzcocks, working with The Cutting Edge directors Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (who went on to direct ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ & ‘Mr. Show’), filming everyone from Alex Chilton to Daniel Johnston, why the archives of the show are so elusive & I even read Carlos a letter that he wrote back to me when I wrote to the record label!

'THE PYHNX' w/ Andy Zax Mar 14, 2024
    Show notes

This week, we discuss a music film that my guest, Andy Zax (a Grammy-nominated archivist and the Music Geek on Comedy Central’s ‘Beat The Geeks’), begs us NOT to watch--the 1970 psychedelic romp ‘THE PHYNX.’ We take a deep dive into the film’s history, mystique, and weirdo cast (James Brown, Colonel Sanders, Dick Clark, Richard Pryor), as well as a fascinating look at Zax’s time at Warner Brothers Records & on ‘Beat The Geeks’. We also discuss liner notes legend & the screenwriter of The Phynx Stan Cornyn, the fascinating pain that this movie brings to any viewer, Lieber and Stoller’s soundtrack, Phil Spector parodies, the star power ranking of UltraViolet, a 400 Vox Guitar army, album artwork, Van Dyke Parks, Joni Mitchell, bootleg VHS tapes, fake band album artwork, sense memories from music, promotional items from movies, writing about psychedelia without knowing psychedelics, the difference between the original script and the finished movie (which included scenes with Allen Ginsberg & Timothy Leary), and Chris tries to beat ‘The Geek’!

So PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM EVER (or do you?) on this week’s episode of Revolutions Per Movie.

'THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT' w/ Jason Gore & Geoff Garlock Mar 07, 2024
    Show notes

This week, we talk to the two hosts of the fictional classic rock station comedy podcast, Jason Gore & Geoff Garlock of 108.9 The Hawk, about their music film pick, The Who's 'The Kids Are Alright.' We argue over what is the greatest Who period of all time, how the band's inner tensions helped make them even greater, how a first-time director/superfan pulled off this film, Townshend's use of alienation & enlightenment through his interviews, Zeppelin vs. Who, being stuck at midnight movie screenings, Jason's radio broadcasting past on an actual classic rock station in the South, and trying to win over Geoff who had never seen this movie until now! So let's blow up a drumset on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!

'VOX LUX' w/ Logan Lynn Feb 29, 2024

This week, we talk to indie pop dance legend and Kill Rock Stars recording artist, Logan Lynn, who picked the extremely intense music narrative film, Vox Lux, to discuss. We discussed the realities and tropes of music films, Lynn’s early years as a teenager on a major label, the lack of protection for young artists within creative industries, addressing addiction and trauma in your art, the notion of selling out, backstage rituals, making fun of ‘The Devil’, the Swedish Pop Mafia, how music gets taken out of context, whether or not Natalie Portman a convincing pop icon in the movie and so much more.

'DEVO: THE MEN WHO MAKE THE MUSIC' w/ Dave Markey (Pt 1 of 2) Feb 15, 2024
    Show notes

This week, we present the first of our two-part episode with filmmaker, musician, and photographer DAVE MARKEY (‘1991: The Year Punk Broke,' ‘Lovedolls Superstar,’ Painted Willie on SST records) about 'the change our lives forever' videotape for both of us: DEVO’s ‘The Men Who Make The Music.’ We discuss how Devo has been the most influential influence on our life and creative work, getting picked on for liking DEVO and pushing back, Neil Young working with the band, the proper way to say Boojie Boy, Devo’s video director (Chuck Statler) singular style and use of non-actors, the concept of selling out, early MTV, seeing Devo live, Dr. Demento & SNL, Devo being championed as a Los Angeles band, dealing with Whip It as a hit song, Dave’s early work as a teenage filmmaker, Devo’s evolution of songwriting, how sexy Mark Mothersbaugh is, CLUB DEVO, John Lydon almost joining Devo, bands jumping on the New Wave bandwagon and how the Devo’s body of work could be absolutely frightening.

So take your hotsy-totsy swinger, put them under pressure, and watch them fall apart on this week’s Revolutions Per Movie.

BONUS REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE EPISODE Feb 12, 2024
    Show notes

Hello everyone…we recorded a special episode of Coffee With Krummenacher about Victor’s times and friendship with Mojo Nixon. We discuss what it was like being on the road when Mojo was opening for Victor's band Camper Van Beethoven, making split flexi-discs and doing inspired photo shoots together, Mojo and Camper playing The Filmmore together, taking mushrooms and long nights with the man, piss-filled cereal bowls, Mojo’s sweet shamanistic outlook on life, living an authentic life, Mojo’s Camper Van Beethoven cover version, and how Mojo was going to be on the Revolutions Per Movie podcast in a few weeks to talk about a Replacements documentary that he saw in his head that didn’t exist (yet) and the excited email he sent me about his ideas. It’s a wild and beautiful tribute to a singular, weirdo force that is no longer with us.

Normally, ‘Coffee With Krummenacher’ is just one of the exclusive bonus shows we have over at the Revolutions Per Movie Patreon (a podcast where my guests talk about their favorite music documentaries or music narrative films), but I thought we should make this episode available to everyone. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve heard, please consider supporting what we do over at patreon.com/revolutionspermovie.

    Thank you.
