Danny Murphy: 'If You've Got A Ninety Per Cent Pass Rate, You're A Coward' Sep 21, 2022
    Show notes

In part two of my interview with the superbly engaging Danny Murphy, we hear more about his relationship with the late former Liverpool manager Gérard Houllier, who guided the Reds to a famous cup treble.

We hear about Fulham’s incredible run to the 2010 Europa League Final under Roy Hodgson.

Also: amazing insights into analysing tactics and why midfielders who don’t take risks are just cowards.

Simeone: Atleti's Emperor with No Clothes #ESPNweekly Sep 21, 2022
    Show notes

    Hola!

This week's EPSN column focuses on the fallout from the weekend's Mardrid derbi. in which Real Madrid beat Atleti 2-1. I consider the parlous state of Atleti and Simeone's future, plus the racist abuse of Vinicius Jnr.

    Enjoy

Danny Murphy: 'I Had One Ambition – To Play For Liverpool at Anfield' Sep 19, 2022
    Show notes

Danny Murphy is one of television’s finest analysts, not entirely surprising for a man who played the beautiful game with such intelligence, vision and skill.

In part one of our conversation, Danny describes being taken to Anfield as a child and declaring to his father that one day he would grace the famous Liverpool jersey. He was as good as his promise.

After a glittering spell, the classy midfielder joined Charlton. It was ‘horrible’ being at Anfield again in an opposition jersey, although his last visit there as a player, with Fulham, was therapeutic, especially when the Kop sang his name.

Classic Big Interview: Emile Heskey Sep 14, 2022
    Show notes

Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Emile Heskey from season five.

The title of Emile’s autobiography ‘Even Heskey Scored’ was a good-humoured swipe at the widespread fallacy that he wasn’t a prolific striker.

There’s great insight into why Leicester City’s players would run through walls for Martin O’Neill.

Emile’s big move to Liverpool required a major adaptation; he loved it and the Kop loved him, but eventually he wanted out of the Anfield pressure cooker.

Also: being a serial cup winner, how Steve Claridge was the worst trainer ever, and how the Golden Generation thrashed Germany.

    Hola

Self-control is part of greatness. At 22, Vinicius jnr stands at a crossroads. Will he use his fury as fuel?

This is my latest column for ESPNFC.

Liam Henderson: 'The only thing I want is to play in the same team as my wee brother' Sep 07, 2022
    Show notes

When I asked Liam Henderson who the best opponent he has faced in Serie A is he didn’t miss a beat: Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Also in part two, fascinating stuff about how you can’t sell a dummy to an Italian, Liam’s dream of playing for Steve Clarke’s Scotland and how his relentless practicing of corner-kicks set up Hibs’ historic Scottish Cup triumph of 2016.

Liam Henderson: 'Italy is football, food and religion' Sep 05, 2022
    Show notes

I caught up with Liam Henderson in beautiful Florence, where the elegant midfielder plies his trade with Empoli.

The former Celtic man has spent four years in Italy, initially playing under Fabio Grosso at Bari and Verona, who Liam had watched winning the 2006 World Cup on television and felt he was fated to work under. Liam loves Italy – especially the cuisine, and feels his talents are more appreciated there than in his native Scotland.

Bruno Lage: 'I try to be the coolest guy in the world' Aug 24, 2022
    Show notes

In part two of my enlightening chat with Bruno Lage, the Wolves manager goes deep into how the power of the image can overcome the distractions of modern life when seeding his football philosophy into the minds of young players.

There’s great content about why a boss should be the coolest guy on the pitch. And I ask: how on earth do coaches of top clubs cope with a World Cup slap bang in the middle of the season?

Morata, Ansu, Moreno - Something Great is Coming for La Roja #ESPNweekly Aug 23, 2022
    Show notes

The La Liga weekend just past was proof that fans of the Spanish national team should be getting excited ahead of their opening match in Qatar in a little over 90 days. The form of Alvaro Morata, Ansu Fati and Gerard Moreno are an indication of a growing maturity.
