RetroRGB Interview: RetroTINK's Mike Chi Aug 08, 2018

Here's a great interview with Mike Chi, creator of the RetroTINK products! We talk about his Raspberry Pi products, Sony BVM sync issues and his mind control helmet ;p If you liked this video, please support the Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/retrorgb

Also, I forgot to ask Mike a question about his upcoming linedoubler - What about 480i signals? Here's his response: "For 480i, it works exactly like the old XRGB or the OSSC. It performs a simple line double from 480i to 480p and passes it out through the HDMI. The handling is essentially identical to 240p sources. To better smooth 480i sources, there's an optional filter that can be turned on. It's basically the same as the old Faroudja DCDi algorithm: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/... You can also use it for 240p sources. The effect is kind of like the old 2xSAI emulator filter."

RetroRGB Interview: Ace Aug 08, 2018
    Show notes

Here's an interview with Ace; Genesis aficionado, clone console tinkerer, fellow retrogaming nerd like the rest of us! Check out links to Ace's work below, as well as FLAC audio samples as discussed in the interview. Please support the Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/retrorgb

FM Sound Chip Samples: http://www.retrorgb.com/files/Genesis_DAC_Noise_Samples-YM2612vsYM3438.zipMy page inspired by Ace's work: http://www.retrorgb.com/genesisversions.htmlAce's Genesis board research: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?7796-GUIDE-Telling-apart-good-Genesis-1s-and-Genesis-2s-from-bad-ones

Ace asked if I'd post these minor corrections to the interview:

17:25 - A CMOS device can both source and sink current, and while an NMOS gate typically sinks current through a pull-up resistor, the YM2612's DAC outputs SOURCE current through 2.2Kohm pull-down resistors connected to the analog outs. In short, both the YM2612 and YM3438 source current, but the YM3438 can source far more of it.

18:29 - Resistance was dropped to 510ohms on later Genesis revisions' power pins to the YM3438, not 560ohms.

38:24 - Just a clarification on the Super NES video warping at the top of the screen, it's only visible in the top overscan area. Within the actual video frame, the warping is not visible.

45:32 - 1Vpp is the voltage for Composite (combined signal and sync), what I meant to say there was 0.7Vpp, which is the voltage required for RGB (had Composite on my mind during that segment, for some reason).

This week’s roundup (#75) features a long-but-important rant about how we need to put a stop to all the dishonest modders that have been consistently ripping people off. I’m sure this will piss a lot of people off, but it needs to be out in the open.

...but on a lighter note, this week features co-host Russ Lyman, SNES Classic / Star Fox news and more! Available on YouTube, iTunes, Google Play, TuneIn and Stitcher, or for direct download/streaming. Links to everything discussed are in the YouTube description: https://youtu.be/P1knFGLCXJA

Interview: Mike Matei Aug 08, 2018
    Show notes

Here's an interview with Mike Matei. It was actually Mike and James' work with Cinemassacre that got me (re)excited about classic gaming and were basically the root of RetroRGB.com's origins! It was very cool of Mike to lend his time for an interview and I had a blast! For people who prefer video, the YouTube version of the podcast is here: https://youtu.be/VtPAcxDxPO0
