Episode 110: Arminius' Fourfold Doctrine of Predestination (Part 2) Jul 29, 2021

In this series of episodes we will be diving into Arminius' Fourfold Doctrine of Predestination as outlined in his Declaration of Sentiments (1608). We will see how it aligns with Covenant Theology, Scripture, and is thoroughly Christocentric. In this episode we will focus on the third and fourth decree in Arminius' Fourfold Doctrine of Predestination. The fourth is the most controversial because it deals with "particular" election of individuals. We will also look at how Middle Knowledge fits into the theology of Arminius and what W. Stephen Gunter thinks of all of this in the analysis section of his book.

Important Announcement: Remonstrance Revamp! Feb 16, 2021

In March Remonstrance turns five! The first “minisode” of Remonstrance dropped on March 3, 2016, and we have been working to promote Wesleyan-Arminian Reformation ever since.

A lot has changed in the last five years. Ben and I planted a church in Shelton, Connecticut, and we have both become fathers. Remonstrance has teamed up with the Fundamental Wesleyan Society and I graduated from Wesley Seminary. The theological podcast landscape has also changed significantly since 2016, although Calvinist voices still dominate.

All of these factors have prompted the necessity to revamp Remonstrance beginning the week of our fifth birthday. The first week of March 2021.

Remonstrance is not going anywhere but we will be changing our programming. Moving forward, the podcast will consist of five types of episode formats:

Interviews: There will be a lot of interviews with Wesleyan and Arminian scholars, historians, seminary professors, and theologians on the show. Stay tuned for some interesting interviews! Some of them will be returning from past episodes and others will be new to the podcast.
Book and Article Reflections: I will be dropping minisodes or even full episodes where I reflect on theology books I am reading or I have read. I will also interact with and respond to current theology articles relative to Wesleyan-Arminianism.
Historical Episodes: I will be dropping some episodes (or minisodes) where I will explore significant historical events from the history of the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition.
Doctrinal Dialogues: True to our “pre-revamp” selves Ben and I will discuss topics together related to Wesleyan-Arminian theology or practice.
Debates: Remonstrance will also be hosting debates from within the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition. These will not be your classic “Calvinist vs. Arminian” debates (yawn) but rather “in-house” debates only!

Essentially, each month will be something different. Remonstrance will remain committed to delivering fresh and theologically substantial content every month. We will also continue our partnerships with the Society of Evangelical Arminians and the Fundamental Wesleyan Society.

I hope you will join Remonstrance Podcast for the next five years of Wesleyan-Arminian Reformation. I am looking forward to seeing what God will do.

In this minisode I continue to share some of what I have learned so far from "After Arminius: A Historical Introduction to Arminian Theology" by Thomas H. McCall and Keith D. Stanglin. In this minisode I focus on the second part of Chapter 2: "Heat and Light" which focuses on English Arminianism. I start off by sharing what I learned about the controversy surrounding Peter Baro at Cambridge which actually predated the Arminian controversy in the Netherlands! Then we look at the positives and negatives of English Arminianism including the thought of Thomas Jackson, John Goodwin, Thomas Goad, and George Bull.

Then we talk about whether or not the Synod of Dort truly condemned the theology of Arminius or only the theology of the Remonstrants who came after Arminius. Episode 98: Politics and Voting (Part 2) Oct 27, 2020

In this episode we continue to discuss the issue of politics and voting with Election Day only a week away here in the United States. In this episode we will begin by focusing on how Wesley taught we should engage in civil discourse especially with those that we disagree with on political issues. When then discuss Wesley's position on slavery and the slave trade and how although he leaned "Tory" in his politics he was one of the most outspoken opponents of slavery in the 18th Century. We then conclude the episode discussing Wesley's advice on voting. We encourage you to post this or tweet this on Election Day:

In this episode we jump into the issue of politics and voting as Election Day approaches here in the United States. We will be focusing on how to navigate through this complex and difficult political season as Christians and specifically seeing what John Wesley had to say. In this episode we will discuss the political context that Wesley lived in. Then we will focus on what it meant to "speak from the center" during the time of John Wesley and what it means to "speak from the center" today. How can Wesley appear to be both a "Tory" and a "Whig" at the same time? We will also focus on what he had to say about political partisanship during the time of the American Revolution and what motivated Wesley to oppose the American Revolution. While under quarantine because of the COVID-19 Pandemic we continue to discuss the Means of Grace and how we can grow in them during this season. In this episode we focus on John Wesley's sermon, "The Means of Grace." First, we discuss what Wesley taught regarding the Means of Grace that: 1) God is above all means; 2) there is no power in the means; 3) they are not meritorious; 4) grace is dispensed by the power of his Spirit and the merits of his Son; 5) seek God alone. In this episode we continue to discuss baptism and the views of Wesley and Arminius on baptism. This episode focuses on Wesley's views of baptism. Wesley's views on baptism are a little less straightforward than Arminius. We begin by discussing Wesley's thoughts on Paedobaptism and then we discuss his views regarding the relationship of regeneration and baptism. Then we talk about the question of original sin and how it relates to baptism within a Wesleyan framework. We end with some practical reflections on the subject of baptism from a pastoral perspective.

Episode 71: Imputation and Impartation (Part 2) Oct 01, 2019

In this episode we will continue to discuss some specifics regarding the doctrine of Justification by diving into the topic of Imputation and Impartation. First, we will be diving into some scholastic theology. What is the difference between the Formal Cause and Meritorious Cause when it comes to Justification? What did Wesley affirm regarding this question? What about the Active and Passive righteousness of Christ? After discussing this we will move on and discuss why Wesley was so specific about his teaching on Justification. We will then talk about how Wesley was doing what he was doing to defend the doctrine of Justification from distortions. Often Wesley is portrayed (wrongly) as being an attacker of the Doctrine of Justification. When in reality he was defending the Doctrine of Justification from distortion.

We will begin by discussing the recent public denial of the faith by the popular author Joshua Harris. In this series of episodes we will be discussing the Synod of Dort again along with the events that followed it. To do this we will continue reading through portions of an article by Kevin D. Young titled, "The Four Hundred Year Flower: Arminius, Dort, and the Battle for Grace" published on Desiring God. In this episode we will be discussing how the politics of the Netherlands surrounding the Synod of Dort dictated to how it was decided. We will also discuss how it was by no means a fair debate. We will also be discussing how the Synod of Dort defined what it meant to be "Reformed" in a way it was not clearly defined before. We will also discuss how the Arminian understanding of grace is different from the Calvinist understanding of grace. Finally, we will talk about what happened to the Remonstrant leaders after their "defeat" at the Synod of Dort.

Episode 61: The International Fellowship of Bible Churches Apr 16, 2019

In this episode we have the opportunity to sit down with Dr. William Sillings who is the General Superintendent of the International Fellowship of Bible Churches (IFBC). Both Vin and Ben are ordained Elders (pastors) in the IFBC and the church plant they serve is an IFBC church. In this interview Dr. Sillings shares briefly about the history of the IFBC along with what makes it unique among denominations in the broader Wesleyan-Arminian movement. One way is that the IFBC holds to a "classical" Wesleyan theology unlike other groups. Dr. Sillings also discusses how the IFBC emphasizes the inerrancy, authority, sufficiency, and inspiration of Scripture. He also discusses how the IFBC strongly encourages contextualization to local ministry contexts while simultaneously holding strongly to Wesleyan orthodoxy. Episode 60: The Wesleyan Quadrilateral (Part 2) Mar 26, 2019

In this episode we will continue to discuss the crisis of biblical authority in the broader methodist movement. This time we will actually talk about the Wesleyan Quadrilateral. We will begin by defining the Quadrilateral and then discuss what is good about it and what is dangerous about it. One very interesting thing to note is how Albert Outler regretted coining the term in the first place. We will discuss how the Quadrilateral can both lead people into error and heresy if it is understood incorrectly and how it could protect us from error and heresy if it is understood correctly. We will then discuss what early Methodist views were regarding the authority, inerrancy, and inspiration of Scripture. We will conclude this episode discussing what the International Fellowship of Bible Churches (IFBC) statement of faith is regarding the authority and inerrancy of Scripture. Episode 59: The Wesleyan Quadrilateral (Part 1) Mar 19, 2019

In this episode we will begin to discuss the crisis of biblical authority in the broader methodist movement. We will begin by talking about the United Methodist Church Special Session of the General Conference 2019 and the decision regarding LGBT marriage and ordination. We will then move on to discuss what led to all of this. We would suggest it all comes down to a crisis regarding the question of biblical authority. We will then discuss what issues there are in the broader methodist movement regarding biblical authority. Is Scripture only a means of grace or is it the authoritative word of God as well? Do we have to choose between the two? At the end of the episode we will finally get to the Wesleyan Quadrilateral which we will discuss more extensively in the next episode in this series.

In this episode we will continue discussing the Synod of Dort which took place from 1618-1619 and led to the "condemnation" of Arminianism by the Reformed representatives. Specifically we will be responding to another article that was published in the January 2019 edition of Tabletalk magazine. This episode we will be focusing on "The Reason for Dort" by W. Robert Godfrey. First we will discuss whether or not orthodox Arminianism is an expression of the "Apostolic Faith" or "one of the greatest challenges to the Apostolic faith" (?) as the article claims. We will then discuss the radicalization of "Arminianism" after the death of Arminius and some of the historical events surrounding the Synod of Dort. We also discuss whether or not Irresistible Grace is necessary to believe in Total Depravity. Finally, we discuss whether or not the Arminians "were uncooperative" or not. In this episode we will continue to discuss the dangers of "Perfectionism" and show how it is altogether different from Wesley's doctrine of Christian Perfection. We will begin by discussing T.A. Noble's book, "Holy Trinity: Holy People" and how Wesley very guardedly affirmed that Christians are "at once a sinner and justified." This of course can degenerate into Antinomianism and Wesley guarded strongly against that but also affirmed it in a way that guarded his teaching from Perfectionism. We then interact with Thomas Oden and discuss what Christian Perfection is not. We end by using Fred Sanders to illustrate the we must choose between the dangers of Perfection or Anti-Perfection.

In this episode we will be discussing the dangers of "Perfectionism" and show how it is different from Wesley's teachings on "Christian Perfection." There are five major dangers of Perfectionism:

It creates two “classes” of Christians
It leads people to think they no longer need a Savior
It leads to pride and superiority
It puts an emphasis on works
It leads to spiritual elitism

We will discuss how trying to teach "Christian Perfection" is like trying to defuse a bomb. We need to be careful and study to show ourselves approved. We then look at what Wesley taught about "Christian Perfection" and illustrate that it was both different from "Perfectionism" and serves as a corrective to it.

Wesley agreed with Reformed Covenant Theology in almost every way. Where he did differ was in his view of the termination of the Covenant of Works and the universality of the moral law as an expression of the Covenant of Grace so all people can be led to Christ. These adjustments were obvious results of his Evangelical Arminian Theology. We will also be looking at the article by Dr. Vic Reasoner again to clarify the conditionality of covenants found in Wesley's Covenant Theology as well.

To do this we will compare Covenant Theology to Dispensationalism by giving a brief introduction to both. In this episode we will continue to discuss how legalism distracts Christians from true holiness. We will specifically focus on different regulations and rules that people are told they need to follow in order to be "holy." We will then look at what John Wesley thought regarding two specific things that groups tend to put regulations on: dress and alcohol. What were the views of Wesley on dress codes? Did he ever make a dress code for the Methodists? What were Wesley's views on alcohol? What were his thoughts on hard alcohol? What about beer and wine? You may be surprised what you find out in this episode. We will wrap things up with a discussion on Romans 14 and how love should guide our Christian liberties.

Episode 31: Christian Perfection (Part 1) Jan 16, 2018

In this episode we will be discussing the controversial teaching of Christian Perfection in an attempt to "de-mythologize" the doctrine. It is our conviction on Remonstrance that Christian Perfection (Perfect Love) is an important doctrine for the Church, as long as it is taught accurately and in accordance with Wesley's teaching. We will be approaching this doctrine from the perspective of what Wesley taught and not what those who followed him taught. Unfortunately many who claimed to teach this doctrine in his name actually ended up changing the doctrine into something he would have never supported. We spend most of the episode defining Christian Perfection (Perfect Love). The best definition is simply, "Love Excluding Sin." We distinguish Perfect Love from "Sanctification" and talk about other issues related to this doctrine. Along the way we receive help from T.A. Noble, Randy Maddox, and Kenneth J. Collins. Now it is John Wesley's turn. What did Wesley have to say about free will? Is his understanding also better understood as "freed" will? Spoiler Alert: Wesley did not believe that humans have natural free will but that free will is a gift of divine grace. In this episode we continue to explore the question of whether or not Open Theism can properly be categorized as "Arminian" theology. We also want to clarify that these two episodes (15 & 16) were never intended to be a full blown attack on Open Theism, rather they were simply made to inform our listeners what Open Theism is and then determine whether or not Open Theism could be properly considered Arminian or not based on the writings of Arminian scholars. In this episode we read through some quotes by Clark H. Pinnock and ask whether or not he truly took a theological pilgrimage from Augustine to Arminius, or if he went further than Arminius in his pilgrimage. Then we weigh in on some opinions by Thomas C. Oden and John Mark Hicks regarding whether or not Open Theism can properly be considered Arminian or not. Minisode 30: Middle Knowledge May 02, 2017

In this minisode we will be exploring the concept of Middle Knowledge and how it fits in the broader doctrine of foreknowledge in the thought of Arminius. To do this we will be jumping back into the same two disputations we read through in the past two weeks (Public Disputation IV and Private Disputation XVII). We will then look for some help from Stanglin and McCall in their book "Jacob Arminius: Theologian of Grace" for some clarification.

Minisode 28: Arminius on Foreknowledge (Part 1) Apr 18, 2017

In this minisode we examine what Arminius wrote concerning the knowledge of God with a specific focus on foreknowledge. To do this we will be reading through Private Disputation 17: "On The Understanding of God." This episode will be the first in a three podcast series that will culminate in a full analysis of whether or not Open Theism could truly be called "Arminian." It should be pretty clear after listening through this minisode that it shouldn't be. Arminius has a very strong doctrine of Omniscience that is presented in this disputation. He also touches on the doctrine of "Middle Knowledge" and we get some help from Keith Stanglin and Thomas McCall from their book "Jacob Arminius: Theologian of Grace."

Episode #14: Regeneration Apr 04, 2017

This episode of Remonstrance is devoted to the Doctrine of Regeneration. One major question we will be looking into is whether or not regeneration precedes faith (the Calvinist view) or if faith precedes regeneration (the Wesleyan-Arminian view). We will be reading through sections of articles by the Society of Evangelical Arminians (SEA) and discussing them. Then we will move on and look at what Arminius specifically had to say about regeneration and what Wesley specifically had to say about it as well. One interesting point that Arminius brings up is that Calvin actually taught that faith precedes regeneration as well. We make references to a lot of different articles in this episode so make sure you investigate the links below. Also, join become a member of the SEA and buy Thomas C. Oden's "Classic Christianity." In this minisode we will be reading through John Wesley's Sermon, "The New Birth" to get some insight into his views on the Doctrine of Regeneration. This is a great sermon by Wesley. He covers the depravity of man as a result of the fall. He also writes about the nature of the new birth and why the new birth is necessary. The questions he asks are as follows in his own words: "First, Why must we be born again? What is the foundation of this doctrine of the new birth? Secondly, How must we be born again? What is the nature of the new birth? And, Thirdly, Wherefore must we be born again? To what end is it necessary?"

Minisode 26: Arminius on Regeneration Mar 21, 2017

This minisode launches a three podcast series where we will examine the doctrine of regeneration in the thought of Jacob Arminius and John Wesley. In this minisode we will specifically focus on what Arminius had to write about regeneration in his works. To do this we will be reading through a selection from his commentary on Romans 7 where he deals with the doctrine of regeneration, specifically the differences between the regenerate person and the unregenerate person. We will also be reading through Article 20 of his "Certain Articles to be Diligently Weighed and Examined" as well where he explores the topic of regeneration further. Along the way we will explore his understanding of where regeneration takes place in the order of salvation and the high view of regeneration that he held to.

Episode #13: Saving Faith Mar 07, 2017

In this episode we will discuss the doctrine of saving faith in the thought of Jacob Arminius and John Wesley. The episode will focus on how both men taught that faith was a gift of God. We will also discuss how both Arminius and Wesley had a very theocentric understanding of salvation and were not man centered at all. We will also discuss how the theology of Arminius and Wesley was different from the theology of other theologians such as Charles Finney on this point. For help on this episode we will be referencing works by Stanglin, McCall, Collins, Olson, and Rodes. All of their books can be found on the Remonstrance website theologians tab. We also read through sections of an article by Chris Bounds and Keith Drury.

Minisode 25: Wesley on Faith Feb 28, 2017

In this episode we will be reading through a portion of John Wesley's sermon "Salvation By Faith" to start getting some insight into Wesley's views on faith. It is clear from this sermon that Wesley did not understand faith as something that people can do independent of the grace of God. Wesley in strong terms emphasizes the divine activity of God in saving sinners. Wesley is clear that faith is a gift of God and that God works faith in men's hearts. Hopefully this episode will clear up some misconceptions. We then finish the episode discussing the VERY non-Arminian theology of Philip Limborch and mourning that his theology is confused with the theology of Arminius. Episode #8: Reformation Day 2016 Oct 31, 2016

Happy Reformation Day! In this episode we will be examining how the theologies of Jacob Arminius and John Wesley were aligned with the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation: Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Sola Scriptura, Solus Christus, and Soli Deo Gloria. To do this we will be examining both primary and secondary sources. You may be surprised to find out that both Arminius and Wesley were theological heirs of the Protestant Reformation and their theology and doctrine were faithful to all five of the solas. This is the seventh full episode! We will be discussing the doctrine of Predestination as articulated by Jacob Arminius. First, we define Predestination. Then we look how Arminius defined Predestination. What becomes very clear is how Christocentric the Arminian doctrine of Predestination is! Then we look through the "Declaration of Sentiments" by Arminius and see what he had to say about the Divine Order of Decrees and compare the Arminian Order of Decrees to the Supralapsarian and Infralapsarian orders of decrees. We then look at what Thomas C. Oden had to say about the alignment between the Arminian understanding of Predestination and the Patristic understanding.

In these disputations Arminius presents a very Christocentric understanding of predestination and election while simultaneously showing his strong opposition to human ability without grace! Minisode 14: Arminius on Predestination (Part 1) Sep 20, 2016

This minisode will kick off a three podcast series that will examine what Arminius had to say about the Doctrine of Predestination. Many people wrongly assume that Arminius did not hold to a Doctrine of Predestination. This is NOT true! He held strongly to the Doctrine of Predestination, but believed nothing should be taught beyond what the Scriptures had to say. In this episode we will be reading Public Disputation #15: "On Divine Predestination." In this writing Arminius does an incredible job explaining a Biblical doctrine of predestination. There will also be some commentary as we move through the disputation.

Episode #6: What Is the Will of God? Sep 06, 2016

This episode of Remonstrance is entirely devoted to the question, "What is the will of God?" We first discuss the Calvinist understanding of the will of God to provide context for the Arminian understanding. We also look at Calvin's distinction between the decretive and prescriptive will of God. We then discuss the philosophical differences between Voluntarism and Intellectualism. It is more important than you might think. We then look at the distinction between the Antecedent and Consequent will of God that Arminius emphasized in his theological writings. Remonstrance Episode #5: What Does It Mean to Be Arminian? Aug 09, 2016

In this episode we ask the very important question, "What Does It Mean to Be Arminian?" Historically, there have been many different definitions of the term "Arminian" and it becomes very confusing. To add to the confusion the term "Arminian" means something else in different historical eras and even in different countries throughout history!

In this episode we make a distinction between "Arminianism of the Heart" and "Arminianism of the Head." Unfortunately, many of the later Remonstrants and the English Arminians in England and New England were liberal "Arminians of the Head." It was really John Wesley who recovered true Arminian theology and restored a theological movement based on "Arminianism of the Heart."

Our hope is that through this episode people will begin to see that true Arminianism is "Arminianism of the Heart" taught by Jacob Arminius, John Wesley, and all their Protestant, Orthodox, Evangelical heirs.

Remonstrance Minisode 11: What Is An Arminian? Jul 26, 2016

In this Minisode we will be asking the basic (but not so basic) question: "What Is An Arminian?" And see how John Wesley answered this question in his short writing titled (very appropriately) "What Is An Arminian?" In this writing Wesley brings up a lot of good points. He is clear that Arminians and Calvinists should come to an understanding of each other's theology so they could have a productive dialogue.

He also points out that no one should speak out against Arminianism unless they have actually read at least a page of his writings. This point is true of people who claim to be Arminian as well.

Wesley promoted more of a spirit of unity through understanding. Here at Remonstrance we believe that this is the way forward. We may disagree, but at least we can disagree based on an understanding of where each other are coming from.

Remonstrance Minisode 10: The Systematic Wesleyan Jul 20, 2016

This episode is a call to study Wesleyan Theology in a systematic way. As Fred Sanders points out, the Wesleyan-Arminian Tradition is not known for its systematic theologians...but they are out there. In fact, NOW is the best time in history to begin studying Wesleyan theology in a "systematic" way because of the resources that are available!

In this episode we will briefly look at why there was a lack of systematic theologians at the beginning of the Wesleyan Movement. We will then look at the early Wesleyan-Arminian Systematic Theologians: Watson, Summers, and Pope. Then we will talk about Thomas C. Oden's "Classic Christianity." Remonstrance Episode #4: Justification and Imputation Jul 05, 2016

This episode is entirely devoted to the Doctrine of Justification with specific emphasis on what Wesley and Arminius had to say about Imputation. We realize there is a lot of debate and confusion today about the Doctrine of Justification. It is important for Wesleyans and Arminians to see what their theological founders had to say. To do this we will be reading and discussing a variety of secondary and primary sources on Justification and Imputation. It is clear that both Wesley and Arminius stood with the Protestant Reformers on this issue.

We will also spend time focusing on three aspects of Justification that both Wesley and Arminius had in common: (1) they both expressed agreement with John Calvin (2) they both did not want to make a distinction between the "Active" and "Passive" righteousness of Christ in their Doctrine of Imputation and (3) they both taught that "Faith is Imputed for Righteousness" and for this they were criticized by their Reformed contemporaries.

Remonstrance Minisode 9: Wesley on Imputation Jun 28, 2016

In this minisode we will be mostly reading John Wesley's sermon, "The Lord Our Righteousness" to investigate his views on Imputation. If you want to understand Wesley's most mature thought on Justification, and namely Imputation, this is the best sermon to read. He wrote it in 1765 after a time of reflection and refinement of his teaching on this.

Wesley undoubtedly held to the Doctrine of Imputation in a way not very different (if different at all) from his Reformed contemporaries. He (like Arminius) quotes Calvin in explaining his views. Hopefully this minisode will bring clarification to Wesley's views on imputation and help to stop false accusations against him.

Wesley was also clear to keep his doctrine of Imputation from becoming a "license to sin" and the end of the sermon he covers this concern as well.

Remonstrance Minisode 8: Arminius on Imputation Jun 14, 2016

In this minisode we will be looking at Arminius on the Doctrine of Imputation within his larger doctrine of Justification. You may be surprised to find out how close Arminius was to Calvin on this! And we are not making this up...this is all what Arminius wrote himself! To explore this topic we will be looking at "The Declaration of Sentiments" by Arminius as well as his "Public Disputation 19: On the Justification of Man Before God."

Remonstrance Episode #3: The Doctrine of the Atonement Jun 07, 2016

This is our third full episode of Remonstrance Podcast. In this episode we will discuss the Wesleyan-Arminian Doctrine of the Atonement. First, we will explain the various major views on the Atonement. They are the Governmental, the Satisfaction, and the Penal-Substitution views. After that we will look at Hugo Grotius and the history of the Governmental View of the Atonement. Then we will look at what Arminius and Wesley taught in regards to the Atonement (spoiler alert: they did not hold to the Governmental Theory). Then we will focus on the views of the Atonement held by the major early Methodist Theologians: Watson, Pope, and Summers. Then we will discuss John Miley and how the Governmental Theory of the Atonement was introduced to Methodism. We will finish with some clarification from Thomas Oden. In this episode we reference works by Roger Olson, Kenneth J. Collins, and Thomas Oden. We highly recommend the works of all three of these theologians.

Remonstrance Episode #2: The Doctrine of Divine Providence May 10, 2016

This is our second full episode of Remonstrance podcast! On this episode we will be taking an in depth look at the theology of Jacob Arminius and John Wesley in regards to Divine Providence. We will start off by defining Providence and Meticulous Providence. Then we will be looking at what Arminius had to say, specifically in regards to preservation, divine governance, divine concurrence, and permission. We also look at the "greater good" theodicy in the thought of Jacob Arminius and how God directs evil and sinful actions toward a greater good.
