Remaker’s Mark Special Episode 3: Casting is Everything Jun 17, 2013
    Show notes

It’s been said that good casting is 90% of directing, and we here at Remaker’s Mark couldn’t agree more. In this, our third Special Episode, we focus on our favorite casting choices of all time. Those roles that we couldn’t possibly imagine being played by anyone else. This also happens to be the first Remaker’s Mark episode with special guests in addition to the usual hosts, namely Joshua Freeman, Kate O’Reilly, and Pete Basgen. They brought both great choices and tremendous energy to the episode, which I hope is the first of many of this sort. Enjoy!

    Remakers Mark 8, Part 2 {My Fair Lady}: Redeeming Henry Higgins Jun 03, 2013
    Show notes

Poster courtesy of IMPAwards.comIn Part 2 of our discussion of My Fair Lady we reveal who we chose to recast the major and minor roles. Kyle discusses his love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with musicals, and we ponder whether the remake should also be a musical. History buff Mark considers alternate times and places for a remake, finding parallels and opportunities in Sparta, Colonial India, and in the time of the Vikings. Finally, we again contemplate Henry Higgins’ misogyny, and the troubles we had with the ending of the movie (managing to compare it to that of The Sopranos, of all things).

You might think that, given the nature of Remaker’s Mark, we’re game for remaking any and every movie out there. But you’d be wrong! In fact, there are some movies that we consider ‘Untouchables’. Not the actual movie Untouchables, but rather, movies that we would never ever want to see remade. This podcast is a discussion of a few of these movies, and why we consider them untouchable.

In Part Two of our discussion of Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope), we dive into some listener feedback, reveal our casting choices for Obi Wan, Leia, Han, and Luke, and talk about filmmaking and plot changes we would make to this most sacred of films. We touch on the simplicity and universality of terms and language used in the Star Wars universe, agree to use as little green screen (and as many practical sets and elements) as possible, and each list one thing that’s always driven us just a little crazy in the original movie.

(PS: You may have noticed the intro theme music sounds a little…old school. If you aren’t familiar, this was the theme music to ‘Siskel and Ebert At The Movies’ from the 1980’s, and is in tribute to Roger Ebert, who we lost to cancer earlier this week. Roger was an inspiration to me, as a film critic, as a writer, as a husband, and, most of all, as someone who persevered through the loss of his actual voice by embracing the internet as his new voice. Here’s to you, Roger. You will be sorely missed by me, and millions of others. – Kyle)

Remakers Mark Special Episode 1: When You Wish Upon a Star Wars Apr 01, 2013
    Show notes

Filmmaker George Lucas meets "Star Wars"-inspired Disney characters at Walt Disney World Resort in FloridaWelcome to the very first Special Episode of Remakers Mark! The whole geek community, including all of us here at Remakers Mark, were flabbergasted by the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm, and announcement that a ‘Sequel Trilogy‘ of Episodes VII, VIII, and IX would be made. A few months later, it was also announced that Disney would be making stand-alone Star Wars features. And that’s where this Special Episode comes into play: here we each provide an example of what we would like to see in a stand-alone Star Wars film. From Knights of the Old Republic to a deep dive into the world of the Sith, we leave few Star Wars Universe stones unturned.

    Enjoy!

Speaking of the remake of Star Wars, the following email conversation between all of the Remakers Mark hosts was too fun not to share. It all started with this link, sharing news about the three major stars from the Original Trilogy. And then it spiraled blissfully out of control from there:

Kyle: If Han, Leia, and Luke are involved in VII and beyond, there’s no way they’d use anyone but the originals. I think they’d likely write it differently so that the characters would only be referenced if they weren’t involved.

Lee: In response to Luke, Leia and Han appearing in episode VII and beyond, how about this:

    • Luke is head of the Jedi council.
    • Leia is a full Jedi knight having been trained by Luke.
    • Both have fully-trained Jedi knights beneath them. One is played by Summer Glau, the other by Armie Hammer.
    • Han is a 4-star general and “Chief of Staff” of the new Republic Military.
    • Chewie still looks the same.

    Mark:
    I suggest:

    • Luke is the head of the chess club.
    • Leia has attained the rank of Grand Moff
    • Summer Glau can be whatever she wants
    • Han is a bartender
    • Chewie is the head of the Jedi council

    Andy
    I offer:

    • Han has become the galaxy’s best lightsaber butcher.
    • Luke is still whiny.
    • Summer Glau is the Force.
    • Leia and Chewie have a love child. It is literally a walking carpet.

    Lee:
I like the walking carpet idea. Karma for Leia.

    Jer:

    • Luke has amnesia and is back in love with Leia attempting to use the force to make her love him
    • Leia has gone into hiding on Tatooine in Obi-Wan’s old cave and found out his dark secret
    • Summer Glau is his dark secret
    • Han lost the Falcon back to Lando in a Sabaac match and has become the leader of Cloud City. His love/hate relationship with Lobot is hilarious.
    • Chewie now has a life debt owed to Mon Mothma’s son, Mads Mikkelsson, a swashbuckling, force weilding, one eyed pilot from the outer rims.

Andy: And Meryl Streep is the Force.

Lee: I think Summer Glau can play a better force than even the great Meryl Streep.

Jer: Also, Steve Zahn plays Jek Porkins II, a wily wise-cracking T-16 pilot being hunted by the remnants of the Empire.

Lee: Steve Zahn is Porkins III, fat Val Kilmer is Porkins Jr.

Jer: Now THAT is a Star Wars spinoff movie I’d watch.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…or in this case, about 35 years ago, in Hollywood, a legendary science fiction film was released that would change cinema forever. Now, it is our job to talk about how to take that film, remake it today, and not make fools of ourselves. The film, of course, is Star Wars (A New Hope), easily one of our collective favorite movies, and easily the movie we all have talked about the most in our time together as friends and podcasters. Here, in Part 1, we deal with recasting timeless roles like Luke, Leia, Obi-Wan, and Han.
