In episode 23 of Remakers Mark we tackle our first animated movie, 1988’s anime classic Akira. Unlike the original, which was a Japanese language anime movie, we are remaking it as an English language live action film (except for Jer, who goes a slightly different path). We tackle recasting two major roles and five major-minor roles. Along the way we discuss the original’s creation of small grayish Benny Hills, think about how to cast and remake the movie as a live action movie, have a hard time remembering who is who in the movie, and we all give ourselves plenty of leeway with presenting the original voice actors’ names.

In part two of our discussion of ¡Three Amigos!, which features our greatest intro EVER, we start off with some really excellent suggestions from fans about who they think should be recast in the three major roles. Then, after revealing who the big winners were from part one’s casting choices, we move into what we would change about the movie in a remake from a plot, tech, and filmmaking perspective. Along the way, we consider alternate settings, where Mark reveals that he hates the Swiss for some reason, and that everyone hates the French. We discuss the role of schtick in the original, invent a whole new genre of film (Communal Schtick, or Sponsor Comedy), and drop a truth bomb about whether we would love this movie if we saw it for the first time today, equating it to another schtick-y classic, Holy Grail. Finally, we share our love for the performances of the actors, and the role of music in the original.

Poster courtesy of IMPAwards.comIn episode 22, we take on remaking a movie that Andy deemed unremakeable, assuming that’s an actual word – ¡Three Amigos!. Here in part one we recast three major roles originally filled by three comedy legends, as well as five minor characters. Along the way we express our preference for cerveza or tequila (or los dos), give our appreciation for how Steve Martin is rubbery in the best way, and Jer hatches a remake plan involving British actors playing American cowboys in Mexican cinema.

    Remakers Mark 21, Part 2 {The Searchers}: Sharpening of Reality Jun 02, 2014
    Show notes

searchersposterIn part two of our discussion of the Western classic The Searchers, we discuss listener feedback regarding how challenging it is to recast an iconic role and actor like John Wayne, as well as suggestions for how that might be done. We talked about how the original film lacked sensitivity, both racially and in terms of mental illness, and suggest some ways to do both of those things better in a remake. Since this was our first Western, we talked about the genre a bit, both in terms of The Searchers’ place in its history, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of it, and wondered if and how the Western could fit in today’s film world. Finally, we express umbrage with the strange mood shifts throughout the original – for a very serious film, it sure had some strange, out of place bits of levity and humor. Throughout these discussions, Kyle confuses Ozzie Nelson with Ricky Nelson, the guys hate on New Jersey and Estonia alike, we speculate that a CG John Wayne might make an appearance in Pacific Rim 2, and Kyle manages to slip in some Vanilla Ice lyrics.

    Remakers Mark 20, Part 2 {Inception}: Restoring the Wonder May 05, 2014
    Show notes

Inception poster courtesy of IMPAwards.comIn part two of our first ‘Bizarro Remakers Mark’, we take a modern movie (2010’s Inception) and talk about how it would be remade in the olden eras of:

    • Mark: 1920’s
    • Lee: 1950’s
    • Andy: Early 1970’s
    • Jer: 1979-82
    • Kyle: 1990-93

We first reveal who the big winners from our recasting selections in part one (hint: everyone’s a winner!). Then we move on to a discussion of three topics around how Inception would be remade in all of the various eras: special effects, ‘dream within a dream’, and overall plot complexity. Along the way we talk about risks in filmmaking in previous eras versus now, how blockbusters and ‘wonder’ have changed in the ~35 years since they have taken over the movie industry, and give some era-specific examples of movies with similar styles and plot devices as Inception.

Update: Mark Joesting, who wasn’t able to make the recording of this episode, provided the following (excellent) summary of his take on Inception in the 1920’s. Enjoy!

Sadly, I wasn’t able to participate in this one, but I will make a case for my 1920’s silent version of Inception, right here.
The 1920’s was actually kind of a golden age of sci-fi and fantasy films. The films of the time demonstrated very creative use of simple tricks of film and sets, and I think that Inception would fit right in.
Metropolis showed us that sets can be enormous and mechanized, and The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari demonstrated effective use of purposefully distorted perspective in the set painting, and both of these techniques intrigue me, for Inception’s city-distorting dream scenes. Nosferatu also proved that the filmmaker can seamlessly transition between transparent and opaque imagery, and this would also be a handy trick, especially in creating dream equipment, and Eames’ disguise, as Browning.
The coup, for this movie (p)remake, is in the treatment of layered dreams. There is a trick used, in The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari, where the black & white film is tinted, to become black & yellow, or black & blue, and this is exactly what I would do for Inception, as well. Dr Caligari used it to differentiate day from night, but I would use it to differentiate dream layers.
The 1920’s version would mostly be different in the dialogue; with intertitles taking the place of audible speech, the dialogue would have to be much more concise. The music, which is pretty much continuous in silent films, would also go a long way in setting the tone.
Inception is a film with a fairly strange premise, but I don’t think that it’s a problem for this 1920’s version. Complexity in storytelling, and weirdness in theme are actually pretty standard for this era of filmmaking, though, and I would hope to preserve the confusing, challenging nature of this film.
So, that’s my (p)remake of Inception. Hope you enjoyed it.

    Show notes

In part two of our discussion of When Harry Met Sally, we gush about how great the movie is, and give it credit for inspiring (for good and bad) nearly every romantic comedy since then. Along the way we discuss avoiding the ‘McConaughey Syndrome’ (recent McConaisance aside), why WHMS succeeded when so many other romcoms failed using much the same formula, hold WHMS up as a great example of how ambiguity can actually strengthen a film and its characters, and ponder whether a shot for shot remake of WHMS be successful today.

Along the way we talk about Billy Crystal as a college student, whether Crystal made or killed Bruno Kirby’s career (but not Kirby himself), and manage to work in a death star reference. We are good Star Wars nerds, after all. Finally, Andy tells an extremely awkward story about the challenges present in slow dancing as a tall junior high student.

    Remakers Mark 18, Part 2 {Taxi Driver}: The Saxophone Self Mar 11, 2014
    Show notes

Poster courtesy of IMPAwards.comIn Part Two of our discussion of Taxi Driver, we start out by sharing lots of great casting suggestions from friends and fans of the show, including a couple that had us second guessing our choices. Then we reveal which of our choices were the official recasting picks. After that we dive into a discussion and appreciation of the original, including the role of the anti-hero throughout time, wondering whether it might be possible to provide more of a background story for Travis without venturing into cliché-land, a tribute to the dirty old New York City that Taxi Driver showed so well. We also talked about Scorsese’s history with New York, and speculate as to what really happens at the end of the film. Finally, in the spirit of the many Scorsese/DeNiro films, we each provide a director/actor pairing who’s films we have greatly enjoyed.
