RSR227 - Bill Cheney - Spectra 1964 Sound of Record Plant, Stax Studio, Ardent, and Easy Eye Sound Jan 10, 2020
    Show notes

My guest today is Bill Cheney owner of Spectra 1964 originally Spectra Sonics makers of the famous 101 mic pres and sound of Stax Records in Memphis. Spectra Sonics made consoles for studios like Ardent in Memphis, The Record Plant in NYC, and Easy Eye Sound (Dan Auerbach's studio here in Nashville) among others. You have heard Spectra Sonics records by Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, ZZ Top, Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, John Lennon, and more than we can count.

I first learned about Spectra Sonics years ago working at my friend Brian Cater's studio Paradox Productions here in Nashville using his 610 Comp Limiter and never forgot how cool it sounded and looked in his control room. And when I spotted Spectra 1964 at the NAMM conference and saw the amazing work that Bill Cheney is doing with Spectra 1964 by recreating the C610 and V610 CompLimiters, and introducing the STX100 and STX500 mic preamps and eq I knew that I would need to learn more.

So I am excited to invite Bill Cheney to the podcast today to learn what we can about the amazing history of Spectra 1964, the studios that have made so many iconic records, the design philosophy behind old and new Spectra Sonics, and what ways we can improve our sound in our studios and better understand things like peak limiting and signal chain.

RSR226 - Alex Oana - Which Mic Should You Buy? Audio Test Kitchen Jan 03, 2020
    Show notes

My guest today is Alex Oana, an engineer, producer originally from Minneapolis now living in Los Angeles. From his studios, in both locations, he has produced hundreds of records over 30 years and been the recipient of 11 Minnesota Music Awards.

Alex is also the creator and co-founder with Ian Hlatky of Audio Test Kitchen, an online resource for seeing, hearing, and auditioning over 300 microphones from the comfort of your own studio. Intending to solve the frustrating experience of wanting to know what a microphone or any piece of audio gear sounds like before committing to what can often be an expensive purchase for your studio. Alex decided to create a place where you can go now to check out a product for your studio that you might be considering and make comparisons until you find the right fit just like a pair of jeans at your favorite store. Or even just go there to have fun listening to what all the different mics sound like to satisfy your curiosity.

Today we'll talk with Alex about what it took to create the world's first online pro audio showroom, what you can find there now, and what you can expect to find there in the future. And also how you can use this knowledge to help you make better records in your studio.

RSR222 - Steve Chadie - Recording Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Los Lonely Boys, Wilco, and Supersuckers Dec 06, 2019
    Show notes

My guest today is Steve Chadie who began his career as an intern at Willie Nelson's Pedernales recording studio in 1995, quickly working his way up to Assistant Engineer for Larry Greenhill. Upon Greenhill's departure, he took on the position of Head Engineer, capitalizing on the learning opportunities presented while working alongside many producers including John Porter, Paul Leary and a recurring 14-year stint with legendary producer Andy Johns.

Steve has been awarded multiple gold and platinum records and several Grammy nominations spanning a wide range of artists including Sublime, Los Lonely Boys, the Supersuckers and Merle Haggard. Whether recording major label artists or local bands, Steve approaches the task with the same enthusiasm and attention to detail and artist comfort as he was taught to do from the start. He has a deep respect for the art and is always willing to lend a helping hand, gear or advice to upcoming young engineers that he collaborates with. He is of the opinion that this is an apprentice-based guild and knowledge should be passed down to these engineers to keep the craft alive.
