#140: Her Name Was Kathleen Peterson: Discussing The Staircase Aug 22, 2018

Show notes

The RCP deep dive the case of Kathleen Peterson and discuss the Netflix original documentary "The Staircase."

In 2004, filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade debuted "The Staircase"as an eight-part mini-series which examined the case of Michael Peterson, a novelist who was accused of murdering his wife Kathleen after she was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their Durham, North Carolina home.

In 2012 a further two hours were shot from Peterson's and the defence teams perspective detailing the aftermath of the trial and turning it into a 13 hour docu-series.

Was it an accident or was she murdered? Our expert team weigh in, starting as they always do, with the victimology.

#139: "False Report" RCP Book Club Aug 16, 2018

Show notes

Lisa Zambetti is joined by Dean Laffan to discuss the book detailing the true story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about being raped and the detectives' journey to arrive at the truth in the hunt for a serial rapist who was terrorising women.

In 2008 a young woman reports rape in Seattle. She is not believed and was given a citation for false reporting. She was forced to pay $500 fine and plead guilty to lying about being raped. A series of rapes then began in Colorado.

The victims ranged from young women to a grandmother. He was a predatory stalker who spent months researching each victim. He would break in, brutally rape the women, take photos on occasions and then carefully clean everything afterwards. He was prolific and predatory and sadly there will no doubt be many more victims who suffered at this hands, than the crimes with which he was charged.

There are a lot of lessons to be learned about believing victims when they take the brave decision to report and many more about early identification, intervention and prevention.
