Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #11 : Amanda Aday (Meat Loaf) Feb 16, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Amanda Aday, daughter of Marvin Lee Aday. Or ML as his friends call him. You and I know him as Meat Loaf. With more than 80 million albums sold and more than 100 million streams of his iconic ballad "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)", Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell is the third best-selling album of all-time after Michael Jackson's Thriller and AC/DC's Back in Black. We talk to Amanda about ML's wildly talented musical career while also doing stints on-stage performing Shakespeare for Joseph Papp, how he found himself cast in both the on and off Broadway casts from the musical Hair and The Rocky Horror Picture Show as well her own career as an actress in the HBO series Carnivale, her amazing life touring internationally with her father, getting a bear hug from Brad Pitt at a casting session and her new YouTube cooking show, All Access Eats. So sit back, relax and listen to yet another fascinating story about being the child of a celebrity, interviewed by a child of a celebrity. Everyone has a story.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #10 : Jordan Summers (Yale Summers) Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are diving head first into the wild world of socially distanced interviews. On this episode, we are talking to Jordan Summers, son of actor and Screen Actors Guild President Yale Summers.

Yale Summers was most known role was as Jack Dane on the Sixties television show Daktari as well as recurring roles on as the ABC Soap Opera General Hospital & Return to Peyton Place. But what he is best remembered for was his almost a quarter century devotion to SAG and founding the SAG awards.

Meanwhile Jordan has become a successful musician & composer – working with bands like The Wallflowers, All Day Sucker & his high school band The Imposters as well as production & session work on documentaries like the film "Echo in the Canyon". So what's it like recording with Brian Wilson? Performing with high school jazz band members that included future members of Warrant, Buckcherry and The Bird & the Bee? Or maybe it was having Michelle Lee and James Farantino as Godparents? Don Rickles and Bob Newhart as MC at your school fundraiser? Yeah, it gets wacky.

Oh and somehow we've found another child of a celebrity who Josh went to school with. A Grover no less! And maybe we'll find out why Josh could never eat Jordan Almonds after the prom.

So sit back and take a listen to our very first Zoom interview podcast. We hope there will be more. If Josh can ever get arid of that audible hum on his end…..

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode # 8 : Morgan Margolis (Mark Margolis) Jan 26, 2021
    Show notes

Today we are speaking to Morgan Margolis, CEO of Knitting Factory Entertainment and the son of actor Mark Margolis and Jacqueline Margolis. Likely you will know Mark Margolis from his breakout role Salamanca from the television show Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as well as HBO's Oz as well as the iconic films Scarface, The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan.

Host Josh met Morgan six years ago when their children were in elementary school together. They both work in the music industry and realized they both had celebrity parents. Morgan and Josh also bonded over New York in the 1970s. While Josh grew up in Los Angeles, he spent my summers in Long Island not far from where his family roots were and while not a city kid, they had shared experiences from Long Island to Manhattan growing up when the Yankees won back to back World Series and the Summer of Sam.

As you will hear, one of the unique things about the Margolis family is that they were an acting family. Both Morgan's parents were theater trained but unlike most celebrity stories, success came to Mark later in life. Always a working actor, Mark Margolis at age 80 is now recognized on the street by paparazzi while 10 years ago, he was just a regular working actor. In a minute you'll hear Morgan's personal story about growing up on the Lower East Side, his own acting career challenges following in his fathers footsteps, the infamous crew he ran with in high school, how football played a role in his life and how his early years watching his parents perform experimental productions on college campuses, travelling from stage to stage in a VW van as a toddler.

So what was it like growing up Margolis? Find out next on Rarified Heir.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #7 : Adam Shawn (Dick Shawn) Jan 19, 2021
    Show notes

Today on Rarified Heir, we are talking to Adam Shawn, son of the great actor, comedian and monologist Dick Shawn. On the day we taped this podcast, we had met Adam one-week prior via a mutual at an Ernie Kovacs Centennial event at the Hollywood Heritage Museum I presented.

It's strange that Adam and host Josh Mills had never met. Dick Shawn starred in two films with his mother Edie Adams, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" and "Evil Roy Slade". What's more Dick Shawn was a guest on his mom's 1964 variety show "Here's Edie". Additionally, he starred with Ernie Kovacs in "Wake Me When It's Over" in 1960.

Edie adored Dick Shawn. He was zany, creative and hysterically funny. He along with Phil Silvers, Jonathan Winters, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar Terry-Thomas and Buddy Hackett among others brought her out of a deep depression after the death of her first husband, Comedian Ernie Kovacs when filming began on Stanley Kramer 's "Mad World" film in 1963.

We speak with Adam Shawn about growing up outside of Hollywood, his father's incredible one-man show, "The Second Greatest Entertainer in the World" where Adam was stage manager and what it was like growing up where people expected you to be funny when they found out who his dad was. Much more too.

So what was it like growing up with a dad whose iconic turn in Mel Brooks "The Producers" as L.S.D. (Lorenzo St. Dubios) was one of his signature roles? Find out now on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Classic rock anthems like "Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride" pushed the band to enormous success with more than 25 million albums sold and eight gold records. Moreover, John Kay is credited with coining the term "Heavy Metal" and became synonymous with biker culture when the Steppenwolf's music was used in the counter culture classic film, "Easy Rider." Today we are speaking to Antonia Bogdonovich, daughter famed film director Peter Bogdonovich (Paper Moon, The Last Picture Show, Targets) and her equally talented mother, the producer, production designer and screenwriter Polly Platt (Pretty Baby, Terms of Endearment, Say Anything…). And like many of our guests, Antonia and our host Josh Mills went to elementary school together in the 1970s. But before taping this podcast, they hadn't seen each other in decades.

Rarified Heir goet deep into the weeds with Antonia about her own directing career and her own career path as well as discussing everything in between. We hear amazing stories about James L. Brooks, Wes Anderson's love of Peter's unsung film Saint Jack, how her mother discovered The Simpson's as we know it, King of the Bs Roger Corman, Boris Karloff's three days of work on Targets, the intense Ryan O'Neil, being in the shadows of her parents, making her own film Phantom Halo, Dorothy Stratten and dealing with private moments in public. See? We go deep.

Let's go behind the Mask, go Runnin' Down a Dream and find out more about Antonia's Terms of Endearment. At Long Last Love it's Rarified Heir.

Today, on the Rarified Heir podcast, we are speaking to Jason Culp, son of actor, director and writer Robert Culp. It's a theme we can't get away from and it's really, it's the impetus for this podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode 3: Carnie Wilson (Brian Wilson) Dec 22, 2020
    Show notes

Today we are speaking to Carnie Wilson. Most likely you know Carnie from her multi-million selling group Wilson Phillips. But Josh met Carnie years ago, in 2nd grade, when The Beach Boys were THE BEACH BOYS. He's known Carnie essentially all of his life, having gone to elementary school and junior high school with her in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles in the 1970s and 80s. What's it like being the daughter of one of The Beach Boys and The Honeys? Find out now on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Intro. Episode #2 - Host Josh Mills (Edie Adams) Dec 15, 2020
    Show notes

In 2018, I was invited to the opening of the National Comedy Center in Jamestown New York. I had reached out to the center months prior to inquire if they had interest in showcasing some of the items I had from the estate of my late mother actress/comedian Edie Adams and that of her first husband, groundbreaking comedian Ernie Kovacs. They were receptive and that Summer I found myself at the NCC.

What struck me immediately was that the National Comedy Center had invited the estates and families of other comedians to the opening. I became friendly with Lucinda Winters-Nash, daughter of Jonathan Winters and her family via a good friend Dan Pasternack. It was at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Center that I had a minor epiphany. I was just one of many families who represented the estate of a celebrity who was well known to the public but only a child could tell you what that celebrity was really like. We had insider's knowledge to the highs and lows of show business, how our parents acted as people not just how the world saw them as celebrities.

Moreover while we all shared somewhat similar experiences growing up as children of celebrities, we all had direct and firsthand knowledge of how great and sometimes how terrible celebrity could be. Somehow I had something in common with the people in the room, even though we had never met before. Be it George Carlin, Andy Kaufman, Jonathan Winters, Edie Adams, Lenny Bruce or whomever, we all had something in common – our famous parents.

The more I talked to Lucinda and her family, the more I realized we all felt a need to preserve the legacy of our parents but we also had stories to tell. Our stories. Our parents might be famous, but only we saw them as real people. We were all slightly different versions of one another. It was then I thought there was more to this than just a ribbon cutting ceremony.

It took me a while to crystallize this feeling and that has become this podcast: Rarified Heir, a podcast about celebrity and the children of celebrities. Indeed everyone has a story. Here we all find our own voice. Take a listen to the Rarified Heir podcast.
