Rarified Heir Podcast #100: Guest Host Daisy Torme (Mel Torme, Janette Scott) Interviews Host Josh MIlls (Edie Adams) Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the 100th episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to…wait a minute, we talk to Josh Mills? That's right, we've flipped the script! Because this is a milestone for us, having launched during Covid and posting a new episode for 100 weeks in a row, we decided to do something to celebrate. Something different. Our amazing and talented friend Daisy Torme took the time out of her busy schedule to guest host this 100th episode today and interview our regular host Josh Mills in a Freaky Friday moment no one saw coming. So Daisy is our host and Josh is our guest. Hmnnnn….

Daisy was the perfect person to take over the episode as they have had a familial connection that goes back decades. Josh's dad Marty Mills and Daisy's dad Mel Torme were friends from the early 50s in New York and while there were rough patches, Marty, Mel, Buddy Rich and Sammy Davis Jr. had a unique, irreverent, competitive, fraternal bond that we spoke about in episode 68. So Daisy was the perfect choice to do this because as the Buddy Rich & Mel Torme album title goes, we're Together Again for the First Time.

We talk about Josh's years growing up the child of a celebrity with his mother, entertainer Edie Adams, professional photographer Martin Mills & running the estate of Edie's first husband Ernie Kovacs. Along the way, we touch on Mills Music, an iconic music publishing company run by Josh's grandfather Jack Mills, Mia Kovacs, Josh's sister, the mob, Edie's love of comedians & musicians, Marty's ship to shore mobile phone, Maury Wills, Italian food, Peter Sellers, Eddie Fisher, Edie's nightclub act and John Kenley, a name you will look up during the podcast, we are sure.

But before we begin the episode, we have to thank our former producer/engineer Erik Paparazzi for his help in getting this off the ground in the early days and to Jason Klamm, who was the first one to sign on to the podcast as co-host back in 2020 when this wasn't even close to reality and to Jamie Harley (that's me) for all his help, patience and effort in making this podcast last 100 episode. His commitment to this podcast is unparalleled and quite literally, we never would have gotten to 100 episode without him. We also owe a huge thank you to Daisy for her time, effort, interest, kindness, research and help in making this 100th episode a reality. But most importantly, we want to thank you, the listeners, for commenting on social media, for emailing us ideas and suggestions and generally, letting us know that all this is worth it. Some new things are happening with the podcast – we've launched our Patreon page today so if you feel like what we are doing is worthy, let us know and feel free to send along a little something as a one-time pledge, a monthly pledge or just provide more an encouragement. While this podcast is a labor of love, we hope to make it even better over the next 100 episodes. And with that…we bring you Daisy and Josh, the podcast centennial

Additionally we speak about Spencer's dad, Richard Heckencamp, a personal manager for numerous celebrities. Rarified Heir Podcast #98 : Peter Ackerman (Part 2) (Elinor Donohue & Harry Ackerman) Oct 04, 2022
    Show notes

Today on part two of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Peter Ackerman, son of actress Elinor Donohue and TV executive Harry Ackerman. On this episode, we focus on Peter's mother Elinor Donohue and discuss everything from the Ray Court's memorabilia shows as well as the Star Trek memorabilia shows she appeared at and the role Peter played at those events. Of course we do talk about Peter's dad Harry Ackerman, a television executive who developed shows like I Love Lucy, Gidget, Bewitched, Hazel, Gunsmoke and a ton of others.

Along the way we talk about all things Ackerman, everything from Aerosmith to "Days of Our Lives", the mandate from Robert Young that meant no kids on set, the coolness of Peter Frampton, a t-shirt for John Candy, the pattern of a Garry Marshall script and much more. Oh and one more thing, we left a little Easter Egg till the very end so make sure you listen to the entire episode. It's all next on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast #97: Peter Ackerman (Part 1) (Elinor Donohue & Harry Ackerman) Sep 27, 2022
    Show notes

Today on part one of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Peter Ackerman, son of actress Elinor Donohue and TV executive Harry Ackerman. We talk to Peter about growing up in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles and how his parents worked on iconic television shows from the 1950s through to the 1990s. For Harry, that meant being directly responsible for shows like "I Love Lucy", "Bewitched", "Gidget", "Gunsmoke", "Dennis The Menace", "The Monkees" and dozens more. For Elinor that was iconic roles as Betty Anderson on "Father Knows Best as well as "The Andy Griffith Show", "The Odd Couple", "Newhart", "Get A Life" and many more. Talking to Peter was a real pleasure and a walk down memory lane as we hear behind the scenes tales of family friends William Asher and Elizabeth Montgomery, a first kiss from the daughter of a famous comedian, visiting the set of "Batman", not visiting the set of "The Monkees" due to Tork's curse and the twisted realization that your school friend actor Johnny is actually playing your mother's son in a TV show.

We talk about long gone LA restaurants, restaurants still present, what it was like to be the son of an actress and then meet the child playing your mother's son on her TV show, your first kiss ever with a comedian's daughter, Sabrina vs. Serena, the end of Bewitched, the amazingly cross Paul Lynde, the lone time Peter asked for a twinkle of Elizabeth Montgomery's nose and much more. It's all here on the next episode, of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.

Rarified Heir Podcast #95: David Jolliffe (Part 1) (Glorya Lord) Sep 13, 2022
    Show notes

Today on part one of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking actor/musician/SAG-AFTRA VP David Jolliffe about growing up in Hollywood. You might remember David from his early work on the show Room 222 as Bernie (yes, the guy with the mass of red hair). You also might know David from one of his hundred plus commercials he's been in. Or perhaps you know his from his voice over/looping work on shows like Devlin. Well, maybe not Devlin, David didn't even remember that one. Regardless, David give us the lowdown on growing up the son of actress Glorya Lord who starred in shows like Mannix & The Doris Day Show and television executive Richard Jolliffe.

Our conversation brings up the world he inhabited as a youth, a young adult and all the way through to now. David has fun and fascinating stories about everyone from Bruno Kirby and Michael Constantine to Sheryl Lee Ralph and Bruce Dern. It's a wild ride of SAG/AFTRA inner workings, his close friendship and musical partnerships with Billy Mumy and Shaun Cassidy, his time in and founding the infamous Hollywood Vampires as well as the kindness of Alice Cooper. Loved talking to David for this episode, so sit back, relax and take a listen to the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #93: Kristen Hillaire Glasgow PhD (Part 1) (Roy Silver, Kathryn Reynolds) Aug 30, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we bring you part one of our conversation with Kristen Hillaire Glasgow PhD, daughter of manager, restauranteur, impresario, raconteur Roy Silver and actress Kathryn Reynolds. The episode sparked literally, when Kristen made the connection on Twitter to the band Sparks in our conversation with Matt Asner a few episodes back. It turns out her dad, Roy Silver managed Sparks for a bit early in their career as well as musicians and entertainers like Joan Rivers, Cass Elliott, Bill Cosby, Jackson Browne and the rock band Fanny. What's more, we learned that not only did Roy Silver manage Tiny Tim but that our host Josh Mills' parents threw a party for Ron and Tiny Tim to 'introduce' Hollywood in Tiny Tim in July of 1968. And we have the proof to back that up.

We talked a lot about all things LA in the 70s & 80s, including restaurants (like Roy's which her dad owned), how her dad 'found' Bill Cosby at The Bitter End in NYC, her mother's folk mockumentary group Allen & Grier, her stepmother actress Dee Dee Rescher, the real story behind the all-female, all amazing rock band Fanny, the genius that was El Grande De Coca-Cola starring Ron Silver & Jeff Goldblum, the record label Tetragrammaton Records Silver and his partners founded which released Deep Purple debut album and the John Lennon and Yoko Ono album Two Virgins and much more. What's more you ask? Well we have to break this interview up into two episodes. It was that good. Part one is here, so take a listen to the Rarified Heir Podcast right now.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #92: Jennifer Pentland (Roseanne Barr) Aug 23, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we talk to Jennifer Pentland, daughter of comedian and lighting rod Roseanne Barr and boy does Jennifer have a story to tell. Jennifer's memoir, This Will Be Funny Later is the focus of our conversation as she writes boldly and with humor about her experience growing up with a mother who rocketed to fame almost overnight. So how does one go from a 'normal' life in Denver to superstardom in the 80s and 90s? We find out on this upcoming episode. Jennifer's raw and very funny take on what it was like growing up with fad diets, institutionalization, self-harm, personal chefs, tabloid journalists, divorce, weight issues and much more is a remarkable journey…with humor!

This episode might also have been the most mobile we've ever recorded. With a computer on her dashboard of van and trailer during a family trip, Jennifer talks openly and honestly (with a little internet lag) about being a goth, Laura Scudder's Peanut Butter, watching Rodney Dangerfield sweat on a treadmill, cults, cutting, art classes, moving home to the mainland, throwing water balloons at yellow journalists to her mother's delight and about a thousand other things. She's intelligent, insightful and remarkably self-effacing. We have said it before on past episodes but you can now add this latest episode with Jennifer Pentland as another brutally honest Rarified Heir Podcast interview like none other. And somehow there are laughs. Lots of laughs. Take a listen.

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode 91: David Deluise (Dom Deluise, Carol Arthur) Aug 16, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to David Deluise, son of actor/comedian and sometime opera star Dom Deluise and actress Carol Arthur. I ask you: was there any other place to be in the 70s than working with Mel Brooks? Was there any other place in the 80s you would have rather been than working with Burt Reynolds? I think not and if David's time with us shed light on those two larger than life icons, he goes on to talk about the laughter, the fun and the friendship Dom Deluise had in show business. We talk to David about everything from Dom's early success on The Dean Martin Show which led to a variety show called The Dom Deluise Show that ultimately got him into some of the classic films of his era. Think of it : Blazing Saddles, Hot Stuff, The End, Cannonball Run I & II, Fatso, Silent Movie, History of the World Part 1, The Cheap Detective, The Muppet Movie and so many more. We also talk about Dom's love of food – both cooking and eating – his triple threat talent and the free stuff. Definitely the free stuff – including the free food.

David experience growing up Deluise is on full display on this episode as is his own career started in acting – yes, he's Jerry Russo from The Wizards of Waverly Place and directing shows like Lab Rats, The Thunderman's and much more. We didn't get to Stargate SG-1, Blossom or The Gilmore Girls. But we did get around to talking about the best way to approach a celebrity during a meal, Mr. T and his comic book he handed out to everyone as well as Mel Brooks quote about Young Frankenstein after a night out with his parents. Take a listen on the Rarified Heir Podcast.
