How Church Leaders Deal with Gossip in the Church Feb 28, 2020
    Show notes

Gossip is an issue dealt with in scripture and a habit Christians are mandated not to take part in, but is unfortunately still a problem leaders deal with on a consistent basis. How do leaders deal with gossip in the church? Sam and Thom discuss common practices of church leaders who deal with gossip in the church and what we can learn from them.

    Highlights:

    • Most leaders do nothing at all.
    • Some leaders have a designated person or persons to deal directly with the gossiper.
    • It is rare for the pastor to confront the gossiper directly.
    • Increasing numbers of churches are addressing it in a church covenant.

Four Major Changes in Preaching the Past Decade Feb 25, 2020
    Show notes

You may feel like an expert on the topic of preaching, but we often don’t evaluate the changes taking place in the world of preaching. We will focus on four major changes to preaching within the past decade and the reason behind these changes.

    Highlights:

    1. More churches have multiple preachers/teachers.
    2. More churches expect preachers to preach in different venues or sites.
    3. Fewer churches expect preachers to preach two or more different sermons each week.
    4. More preachers are largely done preparing their sermons by Wednesday or Thursday.

    Show notes

Where do you find meaning in life? Family, career, your faith? Thom and Sam dive into current data from Pew Research to discover where many Americans find meaning in life and how it practically applies to your church.

    Highlights:

    1. Family (40% in closed-ended questions, 69% in open-ended questions). Some churches compete with culture; other churches complement culture.
    2. Religious faith (20% and 20%). Churches should recognize the intensity of this issue for those who find meaning here.
    3. Careers (4% and 34%). It’s important, but it’s not close to being the most important.

Should Pastoral Candidates’ Identities Be Kept Confidential until They Are Formally Presented to the Church? Point/Counterpoint Feb 07, 2020
    Show notes

We think this episode is unique because of its specificity. Over the course of today’s episode of Rainer on Leadership, Thom and Sam debate the pros and cons of keeping pastoral candidates’ identities confidential until being formally presented.

    Highlights:

    1. No. The congregation can’t make an informed decision if they are told at the last minute.
    2. Yes. The current church of the pastoral candidate will be stressed and in limbo until a decision is made.
    3. No. If the call is meant to be, God will protect the candidate and the candidate’s church.
    4. Yes. If the call of the pastor fails, the pastor may effectively have no church.

    Show notes

    • Contract work is a great opportunity for those who believe they may be called to ministry.
    • As the gig economy grows, the number of full-time staff members will decrease.
