The Thoughts That You Think (Romans 12) Jun 12, 2023
    Show notes

Do your thoughts control you, or do you control them? In Philippians 4, the Apostle Paul calls believers to take charge of their thought life — to dwell on what is true and good rather than on fear or what tears us down. In this sermon, Dr. Toby Holt shows how the focus of your thoughts shapes the direction of your life.

    Questions this sermon answers:

    1. Why do our thoughts matter so much? Because what we dwell on shapes how we feel, what we love, and how we live. Paul treats the mind as something to be guarded and directed, not left on autopilot.

    2. What does Paul tell us to think about? Whatever is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report — the things worth meditating on, rather than what drags us down.

    3. How does this help with worry? Just before this, Paul says to bring everything to God in prayer. A mind fixed on God's truth, instead of on fear, is guarded by the peace of God. "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things." — Philippians 4:8 (NKJV)

Galatians: You Will Reap What You Sow (Ep. 10) Jun 07, 2023
    Show notes

A man 'reaps' what he 'sows.' As Paul wrapped up his letter to the Galatians, this was his emphasis. The things that you do and the things that you say will produce some sort of harvest - the question is, what kind will it be? Are you sowing good seeds, or are you sowing the spiritual equivalent of "gummy bears" that won't last the test of time?

Click to listen to this final sermon in our series on Galatians. Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) In this last chapter of Galatians, how does Paul conclude his letter?

    B) What does it mean to 'sow' to either the flesh or the Spirit?

    C) What did the cross mean to Paul? What does it mean to you and I?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Galatians: You Will Reap What You Sow (Ep. 10)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

    3. How should Christians respond in worship, obedience, and daily life?

Galatians: The Fruit Of The Spirit (Ep. 9) Jun 05, 2023
    Show notes

What does a changed life look like? In Galatians 5:16-26, the Apostle Paul describes what God's Spirit produces in a believer's life — the "fruit of the Spirit." Dr. Toby Holt explains how this fruit grows and why it matters.

Our good works do not save us, but they show that we have been saved. Paul contrasts the "works of the flesh" — anger, jealousy, selfishness — with the "fruit of the Spirit" — love, joy, peace. The key word is "practice": there is a difference between a life defined by sin and a believer who stumbles but is grieved by it. Bad, dead fruit points to bad, dead roots.

    Questions this study answers:

    1. What is the "fruit of the Spirit"? The character God's Spirit grows in a believer: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

    2. If works don't save us, why do they matter? Because they are the evidence of real faith. A changed life does not earn salvation, but it shows God has truly changed the heart.

    3. Can you tell a true believer by their fruit? Over time, yes. A life increasingly marked by the Spirit's fruit reflects a heart God has made new. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law." — Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)

Galatians: Two Sons And Two Roads (Ep. 8) Jun 02, 2023
    Show notes

Abraham had two sons. These sons had different mothers, and a very different future. In this eye-opening episode, we consider the story of Abraham's two sons, Isaac and Ishmael, and their connection to the theological argument of 'works' and 'faith.' We'll see how Paul refers to these biblical figures in Galatians 4 to challenge the Judaizers about their reliance on works for salvation.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) What role does our works have in our salvation (if any)?

    B) Why does Paul refer to Abraham's sons to make his case?

    C) Why did the Galatian church need to hear this particular message?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Galatians: Two Sons And Two Roads (Ep. 8)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

    3. How should Christians respond in worship, obedience, and daily life?

Galatians: God Is Your Heavenly Father (Ep. 7) May 31, 2023
    Show notes

Is God your father? Does He love you like a father loves a child, and pursue what is best for you? Or are you outside of His family? In the Bible, there is a doctrine called the "doctrine of adoption," and it is one of the most encouraging teachings in the entire book. Click to learn more in our study of Galatians 4.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) What does it mean to have God for a father?

    B) Will God ever cast His children from His sight?

    C) What about when you sin? What is your Father's response?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Galatians: God Is Your Heavenly Father (Ep. 7)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

    3. How should Christians respond in worship, obedience, and daily life?

Galatians: The Purpose Of God's Laws (Ep. 6) May 29, 2023
    Show notes

If the law can't save us, why did God give it? In Galatians 3:19-25, the Apostle Paul explains why God gave His law, even though no one is saved by keeping it. Dr. Toby Holt walks through what God's commands are really for.

If we are saved by faith, why have rules at all? Paul answers that the law was never meant to save us; it shows us our sin, restrains evil, and points us to Jesus. He calls it our "tutor," a guardian who guides a child until the right time. John Calvin said the law is like a mirror, showing us what we are really like.

    Questions this study answers:

    1. Can keeping the law save us? No. No one is made right with God by keeping the law. It cannot give life; it can only show us our need for a Savior.

    2. What does it mean that the law is a "tutor"? A tutor guides and protects a child until they are grown. In the same way, God's law guides us and points us to Christ, the only one who can save.

    3. Do Christians still keep the Old Testament laws? The ceremonial laws were fulfilled in Christ, but God's moral law — do not murder, steal, or covet — still reflects His character.

"Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." — Galatians 3:24 (NKJV)

Galatians: Who Has Bewitched You? (Ep. 5) May 24, 2023
    Show notes

Can your good works add to your salvation?

No. In Galatians 3:1-14, the Apostle Paul asks a sharp question: "Who has bewitched you?" Dr. Toby Holt explains why adding works to faith is not a small mistake but a dangerous one. The Galatians had started well, trusting Jesus alone, but were now being talked into adding rules, as if their effort could finish what Jesus began. Paul reminds them they received God's Spirit by faith, and points to Abraham, accepted simply because he believed. Holt's rule of thumb: if you hear "faith," then a plus sign — run.

    Questions this study answers:

    1. What does it mean to be "bewitched"? Paul means the Galatians had been talked out of clear truth, almost as if under a spell, trading a gospel of faith for a gospel of works.

    2. Why is a gospel of works so dangerous? Because it steals glory from Jesus and gives it to us. Adding our effort to His finished work says His sacrifice was not enough.

    3. How were people in the Old Testament saved? The same way we are — by faith. They looked forward to the promised Savior; we look back to the work Christ has finished. "But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for 'the just shall live by faith.'" — Galatians 3:11 (NKJV)

Galatians: Amazing Grace For Lost People (Ep. 3) May 19, 2023
    Show notes

Israel and the Gentile nations had been fighting for a very long time.

As you may recall, Gentile nations (like Rome) had oppressed the Israelites for centuries. There was bad blood there. And yet, in God's time, these same Gentiles were to be engrafted into His holy family. This was AMAZING GRACE! But it wouldn't come easy. Click to listen to Week 3 of our series in Galatians.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) Did God's plan of salvation always include the Gentiles?

    B) Who were the 'Judaizers?' Why did they antagonize Paul?

    C) Why did Paul say that (in Christ) there is neither Jew or Greek?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    1. What is the main issue raised in Galatians: Amazing Grace For Lost People (Ep. 3)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

Galatians: When They Won't Listen To God (Ep. 2) May 17, 2023
    Show notes

When people don't like the message, they attack the messenger. When our predecessors didn't like the Biblical message, they critiqued and rebuked those that had brought it. Prophets, apostles, even Christ himself - all died because of what they had to say. That will be the focus of today's study in Galatians.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) What was Paul's greatest frustration about the Galatians?

    B) Why did the Galatians turn so quickly to "another gospel?"

    C) Why was their behavior both stupid and dangerous?

Speaker : Rev. Dr. Toby B. Holt

    Questions this sermon helps answer:

    1. What is the main issue raised in Galatians: When They Won't Listen To God (Ep. 2)?

    2. How does this passage point listeners to Christ, grace, repentance, and faith?

    3. How should Christians respond in worship, obedience, and daily life?
