Trickle Down Episode 13: Educational Fashions (Sample) Dec 31, 2023
    Show notes

The root concept of “learning styles” is based on a simple and intuitive idea: different people most successfully learn through different means. Or maybe they best learn through different sensory or emotional inputs. Possibly because people with differing brains make them more receptive to certain ways of knowing and absorbing information. Some people managed to take this intuitive idea and build massively successful careers for decades. Students were labeled “Visual,” “Aural,” or “Kinesthetic” learners. The problem, as researchers discovered in the ‘00s, is that there’s no good evidence to suggest that any of the “learning styles” models popular with teachers actually improved educational outcomes. But that did little to slow the popularity of learning styles — or the mini industry built up around them. Our holiday present to you all is the gift of Jake, Liv, Julian, and Travis losing their collective minds over the new film “Leave The World Behind” – a pre-apocalyptic film executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama. Not only will they be staggering their way through the plot of the film and its production history, but they’ll also be taking a look at the online conspiracy community’s reaction to the film. Part 2 of our exploration of how Gatorade influenced the science of hydration. In this episode Travis talks about how the Army developed bad doctrine around hydrating soldiers while preparing for war in the Middle East, how Gatorade helped finance athletic organizations, and why dangers related to overhydration were ignored in the 90s. Also at point Jake launches into a Carpi Sun ad for some reason. Trickle Down Episode 11: The Elixir of Life Part 1 (Sample) Dec 10, 2023
    Show notes

There are many reasons why Gatorade became the king of sports drinks. It had a compelling origin story. Its partnership with the NFL led to the iconic “Gatorade Dunk,” where celebrating athletes would pour a giant container of Gatorade over their coach. There was the hugely successful “Be Like Mike” advertising campaign, which featured Michael Jordan sipping Gatorade. But one of the reasons is the belief that Gatorade is a science-backed product. To secure this belief, Gatorade’s owners helped establish the Gatorade Sports Science Institute. On these two episodes of Trickle Down, we’ll explore how Gatorade influenced the science of hydration on the way to becoming a multi-billion dollar brand.
