    Announcements Mar 21, 2022

This podcast episode is a short message for you about what's coming up with Pursuing Private Practice!

We have had a crazzyyyyyy few months. It honestly feels like we have all been working a lot over here as we are redeveloping our curriculum to reflect the different stages of business. This is honestly my zone of genius and I have LOVED every minute of it, as I truly feel this is what I am called to do!!!

But I did not practice what I preach and take inventory of my own energy that was needed to complete this major overhaul of a work project. For the past few months I have noticed some of my burnout tendencies coming on full force.

With that in mind, I can’t tell you all of my ideas yet, but please know that I will announce those things when we have final plans. I do have three things to tell you today that are official!

In this episode, we’re discussing boundaries. All three of our guests found themselves in different places in their businesses in 2021 where they had to really look at their priorities and decide what is and is not important to them, and how they can pivot and let go in order to honor their own business and personal boundaries.

My ED Recovery and Journey as a Dietitian Mar 07, 2022

Our work as anti-diet RDs makes such a difference in the world. But sometimes, it can feel lonely when there’s so much diet culture that we’re constantly fighting against.

This podcast episode is a little bit different. In this episode I address a lot of the traditional storytelling around becoming a dietitian in the first place. I talk about why I wanted to become a dietitian in the first place, my internship, my first job, and building my private practice. I also talk about my own eating disorder recovery in this episode, which feels vulnerable. But I know it will be valuable. I have learned so many things in recovery that apply to how I manage my businesses today, and I want to reflect on that and share that with you today.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • My own eating disorder journey & recovery
    • My internship at Johns Hopkins and how that contributed to my eating disorder
    • Starting therapy & how the skills I learned translated to being able to starting a private practice

Transform Your Business with Supervision with Jessica Serdikoff Romola Feb 21, 2022

I LOVED recording this episode with Jessica Serdikoff Romola. I’m so excited to get it out into the world for all of you. Jess and I talked very openly and honestly about how supervision is so important for dietitians, for our career and for all the imposter feelings that we have. Jess termed the phrase “imposter feelings” — I love it – instead of “imposter syndrome” and we talk about why in the podcast episode.I think you’ll really enjoy hearing Jess and I discuss what goes into supervision and break down how it can absolutely transform your business as a dietitian.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • What is supervision and “imposter feelings”
    • Challenges dietitians face and how supervision can help by providing support, advocacy and growth
    • How to handle emotional reactions and overidentification with clients

In this episode, we discuss hiring for your business. Our three guests are all in different places in their businesses, but they all share something in common: they have all hired within the last year. Their businesses and stories are so different. There is not one “right” way to hire support in your business, and this episode sheds light on that.

Coasting is Hard Dec 20, 2021

Here at Pursuing Private Practice, we are celebrating the holiday season! We know the holidays can bring up so many emotions, and we are wishing each of you all the self care and peace during this holiday season.

I wanted to take a second to talk about coasting in your business during the holidays. December is a time to coast as much as possible (at least that’s my own belief!). The reason for that is because there are so many other things going on in our lives that need extra attention: gift buying and giving, socializing, different routines, shifting childcare, etc. We cannot do all the things, and December is the perfect time to give yourself a break when it comes to your business growth.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • What is coasting?
    • Ideas for cutting back on your workload
    • How business impacts other areas of life
    • The negative feelings around coasting
    • How to know when it’s time to stop coasting

Aligning Your Expectations With the Reality of Building a Private Practice with Rebecca Lee Nov 08, 2021

I loved recording this episode with Rebecca Lee. We talk about the complexities of building a business, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We talk about privilege and how that has impacted both of us in our abilities to build a business, and we talk about how that privilege shows up in our work.

Rebecca and I also have an important conversation about some of the black and white thinking that is so prevalent in the online business world, including a conversation around building a business without relying on social media.

There are a lot of great tips in this episode, especially if you are newer to the private practice world.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Building a business during the COVID-19 pandemic
    • Financial privilege and double-income households
    • Aligning expectations with the reality of building a private practice

Intuitive Eating and Sports Nutrition with Suzanne Smith Oct 25, 2021

I absolutely loved talking to Suzanne Smith for this episode!

We talk about so many different topics, but the one that I want to point out is the discussion we have about the black and white thinking that so many business owners adopt when they are building their business.

Suzanne was very open and honest about her own eating disorder recovery, and I love how she talked about transferring that black and white thinking about food to her business. I can completely relate with what she says.

Medical Nutrition Therapy and Intuitive Eating with Fiona Young Oct 04, 2021

Fiona Young joins me on this episode to talk about how we can merge MNT recommendations with an intuitive eating, non-diet, weight-inclusive approach.

We talk about how our own eating disorder recovery journeys have led us to want and crave healthier options for food. Nutrition is a big deal to both of us, but it’s only one aspect of someone’s overall health. Health outcomes are largely based on our environment, not our individual personal choices, but we do recognize that the influence that our choices do have can be important.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Making intuitive eating fit with treatment of chronic conditions
    • Transitioning from leaving full-time work to do part-time work + private practice and then to private practice only
    • Transitioning from a scarcity mindset to one of confidence
    • Appreciating eating nutrient-dense foods while also supporting others who shouldn’t be focused on the “health” of foods

This episode is a recording from a live workshop we held with the Dietitian Business School clients, and it was so valuable that we wanted to share the discussion with all of you.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Why our clients want to lose weight
    • Recognizing different lived experiences
    • Our role as clinicians in a weight-inclusive approach
    • How social justice issues play a role in our clients’ journeys

The Stages of Business Sep 20, 2021

This podcast episode is a little bit different from normal, but I’m so excited to be recording this for all of you!

We are talking about the Stages of Business. This topic is actually based on a workshop I did for the dietitians in Dietitian Business School. This workshop was so well received that I was inspired to add it to our podcast content to share with those of you that are building a private practice but aren’t a member of Dietitian Business School yet.

One of the things I get asked most often from our community is: How do I know if I’m a good fit for Dietitian Business School? As we have built DBS, we have attracted business owners at many different levels in their businesses. We have worked to adjust our curriculum to serve all of these different Stages of Business: Starting, Growing, Scaling, and Coasting.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • How we define the 4 different stages of business
    • Why it’s important to know which stage of business you are in
    • What to focus on in each stage of business
    • The pros and cons of each stage of business
    • The importance of supervision in your growth as a dietitian

The Intersection of Culture and Intuitive Eating with Dalina Soto Aug 09, 2021

As non-diet dietitians, we are already immersing ourselves into more inclusive spaces, especially when it comes to body positivity and Health at Every Size. We really try to honor our clients exactly where they are at in their relationships with food, movement, and their bodies.

However, I do think that we sometimes forget to take into account the cultural aspect of these relationships.

Dalina Soto saw this problem. She wanted to make the intuitive eating movement accessible to the latina community. She has built her business by talking about how important culture really is when we are talking about food choices in the weight-inclusive space.

What to Do When Your Private Practice is Booked Out with Amie Guice Mar 15, 2021

I absolutely loved this raw and honest conversation with Amie Guice.

We talk about what it means to be “full,” or booked out, as a private practice dietitian. This means different things to all of us depending on our life situation and goals, and we discuss those different factors in this episode. Only you can decide when you’re booked out.

We also talk about what to do next when you do reach that place. This is actually a pretty common occurrence in private practice — once you’ve been in practice for a while, you will often reach the point where you don’t have enough time to take on all of the clients who need support! Amie and I talk through what we both did when we reached that point, and I hope this conversation will give you some ideas of what you could do next.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Amie’s private practice journey, from “side hustle” to having a full client load
    • How to know when you’re calendar is full
    • Working “in” your business vs. working “on” your business
    • Utilizing a “parking lot” as your business grows

2020 was a big year for Tamara, but I know that she has big things ahead too! She is making such a positive difference with her clients and other dietitians, and I’m so excited to see what’s in store for her in the near future.

Improving Your Money Mindset and Building Wealth with Christine Dyan Thomson Nov 30, 2020

Christine Dyan Thomson joins me on this episode of the podcast to get real about money mindset!

The conversation is so needed. As dietitians, our field is made up of mostly women, and that can sometimes make the conversation around this topic feel extra charged. I feel like I’ve been talking about this topic with so many of you lately though, and the more we can address our fears and desires around money without shame, the better our collective mindsets will be. When women earn money, a large percentage of it is invested back into our children, our families, and our communities, and that is such a good thing!

When we believe in our mission and we invest money into our mission, we have more power to make an impact and change the world.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • The power of community in the success of your business
    • Taking personal responsibility for what you want in your career
    • Shifting your wealth identity through mindset work

Let’s Get Honest About Money Oct 12, 2020

I was nervous to record this episode of the podcast for you, and I’m never nervous to record podcasts.

I want to talk about money.

Specifically why I charge the prices I charge in my business.

I wouldn’t say I’ve been avoiding talking about this topic, but I haven’t purposefully come out and stated my feelings about money in business yet. Lately it feels like I’ve been having this conversation more and more with the dietitians in Dietitian Business School, so that is prompting me to come on here and say: If you are a dietitian who wants to dive into the topic of money and how to charge for your work, you are welcome to join Dietitian Business School and have that conversation with us.

So let’s talk about it. I want to talk about this in a positive light and take away some of the shame that some of us feel around money and what to charge in our businesses. And as always, I want to hear your thoughts on this!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Financial privilege
    • Investing and where to put your money
    • Shame around money

Building an Online Business to Solve a Problem with Lauren Bickford Oct 05, 2020

Many of you have told me that you are interested in starting an online business, or at least adding a virtual component to your practice. But many of you are just unsure of how to get started doing that.

A less intimidating way to start to think of online business is just an extension of your current practice! There are so many different ways that you can dip your toes in: you could start a group program or create digital downloads or put together an online course, for example.

Lauren joined me on this episode to share her own journey starting and growing her own online business, The Food Fight Fam. She was able to turn her passions into a thriving business that is solving a problem that she cares about: connecting HAES dietetic students. We talk about the initial development of The Food Fight Fam, how it has grown, and where it’s going in the future.

If you are an online business owner or are considering starting one, this episode is for you!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • What is The Food Fight Fam and how did it get started?

Behind the Scenes of a Business Coaching Call with Kourtney Johnson Sep 28, 2020

When we start our business, it is so common to think: No one is going to buy my stuff.

It can feel so hard to talk about our doubts because social media is saturated with competing businesses posting about their successes and flashing their large numbers.

Kourtney Johnson joined me for a very honest conversation today about the reality of starting a business and not finding immediate success. This episode is more of a business coaching session than a regular podcast interview, and I’m so happy about how it turned out!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Identifying the best offer for your business
    • The importance of social proof
    • Onboarding new clients
    • Marketing efforts and how to get more eyes on your offer

Today’s topic is so important, especially if you are newer to business.

Jenna and I are discussing niching down in your business! We talk about the pros and cons of niching down and why it can be so hard to actually do.

Jenna shares her own business plans and talks about approaching her business as an experiment to figure out what really resonates with her. I love this perspective and think it is powerful advice for business owners at any stage in their business.

    • Making the bridge between your passions and your business
    • Using non-judgemental curiosity to identify your niche
    • Scarcity vs. abundance

Hiring Team Members to Grow Your Business with Taylor Moser Sep 14, 2020

This episode of the Pursuing Private Practice is very different from any episode I’ve done before! I really enjoyed having this type of conversation and hope you find a lot of value in it too.

Taylor Moser is the Operations Director here at Pursuing Private Practice! We talk about how we found each other, how our working relationship has evolved since Taylor started working with me, and how we manage all of the moving pieces of a growing online business.

When it really comes down to it, hiring someone is a process. You don’t just decide to hire someone and see everything click into place on day 1. You will have to train someone in how your business works, make sure that your personalities mesh well together, and maintain open lines of communication. Hiring someone can initially feel like a lot of work initially, but it is so worth it in the long run.

I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look at Pursuing Private Practice!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • How Taylor and I started working together
    • What Taylor’s role looked like in the beginning and how it has grown and evolved over time

Setting Up a Business as a Student with Katy Zanville Sep 07, 2020

I’ve really been wanting to focus more on interviewing brand new dietitians, and it was so great to get Katy’s perspective! She is currently in her dietetic internship and is in the beginning stages of starting her own business.

Katy’s dietetic internship has been very unique given the healthcare situation in the midst of the COVID pandemic. At one point she was not even allowed to enter the hospital where she is completing her internship! We talk about what she has learned from this and how she was able to still make her internship a positive experience.

We also discuss getting everything organized and setting up the foundation of starting a business. Katy is going places! I’m so excited to see what she does when she becomes an RD.

I know that many of you are in a similar place to Katy in your business journey, and I think you will really enjoy and learn a lot from this episode!

You Are Your Biggest Asset Aug 24, 2020

    Let’s talk about rest.

Taking time off is something that a lot of entrepreneurs struggle with. And this seems like something that we are ashamed of! It seems like we should just love resting and taking time for ourselves.

I know that sometimes our mission can feel so BIG and we want to achieve our goals so quickly that we end up hustling all. the. time. But that’s not actually conducive to our success.

    So let’s talk about it!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • What is true rest and why do we need it?
    • Rest as the foundation of self-care
    • How your business will benefit from taking time off
    • Pursuing Private Practice’s plan to take a break

Starting and Building a Private Practice with Jen Haefele Aug 10, 2020

Jen Haefele is a member of the Pursuing Private Practice program, and I absolutely love the energy she brings to the group. This interview is a true reflection of her positive energy. She talks about her goals and dreams, and she talks about the future of her career.

I love to talk with dietitians who are in her position - she is just beginning her journey into private practice. I tend to interview dietitians who are further along in their journeys, but I really want to start featuring more dietitians who are in the beginning stages of their businesses. It is so exciting to hear what they are doing now to build their businesses AND what their goals and dreams are for the future.

Jen has some really unique and fun ideas in her “parking lot” of ideas for the future, and I cannot wait to see what she does with her business in the coming months!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Jen’s numerous college degrees and what ultimately drove her to her work within Intuitive Eating.

    • The challenge of dividing time between working for someone else and starting your own private practice
    • Incorporating physical exercise with dietetic counseling

Learning, Growing, and Evolving with Evelyn Tribole Aug 03, 2020

I had the privilege of interviewing Evelyn Tribole for this episode of the podcast. This ended up being a pretty vulnerable interview for Evelyn. She was very open and honest about her journey and the evolution of Intuitive Eating.

One of the biggest takeaways that I hope you get from this episode is that it is okay to learn and grow and evolve and change! Even if you are an established business owner, there is still so much learning that we can do before we then take action, one of the most important steps when we learn new information.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • “When you know better, do better”
    • The evolution of Intuitive Eating and writing the 4th edition
    • Prioritizing family and self care
    • Showing up with compassion and humility
    • What’s next for Intuitive Eating?

Unpacking Bias and Stereotypes in Dietetics with Clara Nosek Jul 27, 2020

Clara is someone who is making such a big difference in the world through her positive message of body liberation. She is unapologetically herself as she stands up for what she believes in. I’m honored to talk with her today about her work as a dietitian and activist, and how her mission is helping to truly make this world a better place.

This episode is unique in that we made a mistake in the first recording of the episode, and rather than editing it out we decided to leave it in and model how we are still continuing to grow and evolve ourselves. Activism work is messy, and we aren’t always going to get it right. You will hear the episode wrap up like it is done, and then we will come back on one more time to identify our mistake and have a short conversation around it.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • How cultural and personal beliefs affect our health perspective
    • The need for “unlearning” what has been assumed to be true, and learning what real health and nutrition can look like for people from various backgrounds
    • Recognizing the difference between good intention and actual impact on others
    • How making mistakes is an opportunity to learn and grow

The Importance of Body Image Work with Bri Campos Jul 20, 2020

I’m so thrilled to bring this episode to you today, for a couple of reasons.

Bri and I talk about how she works with her clients to improve their body image. This is an area of client work where many clinicians feel inadequate, and it’s so helpful to hear Bri’s take on this.

We also talk about Bri’s unique business journey. Her journey is so interesting because it’s almost like she accidentally grew her business, which is a really great thing! She is so passionate about her mission and the work that she does. She works with clients and clinicians, and she shares the whole story of how her business came together and how she took the very scary steps of making herself visible to create group programs and offerings for professionals.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Bri’s personal journey to embracing Health At Every Size and the meaning of “healthy”
    • The evolution of Bri’s business from her start as an eating disorder coach, to turning her passion into practice as a body image coach
    • Unlearning the belief that weight is directly tied to wellness

Transitioning Your Business to Fit Into Your Life Jul 13, 2020

I’m flying solo today to talk about a topic that is near and dear to my heart and something that I’ve been thinking about so much lately: transitions.

This conversation feels vulnerable to share, but it’s my hope that by sharing my own thoughts and feelings during this time, it will give you permission to accept these feelings as they come up for you too.

I think transitions are necessary in business. But it can feel scary to talk about because as business owners, we are “supposed to” have all of the answers and know what’s best for our business. It can feel like we’re supposed to be ON all of the time and not necessarily allowed to make transitions.

But our situation is always changing, and our business needs to fit into our life - not the other way around. No business is going to be “successful” if the business doesn’t fit into the business owner’s life.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Moving out of our private practice building after 9 years
    • The necessity of transitions
    • Different kinds of transitions in business and life

Starting Out in Private Practice (Without Clinical Experience) with Alex Raymond Jul 06, 2020

Did you know you don’t have to have clinical experience before opening up a private practice?!

In today’s episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast, Alex Raymond and I have a really honest conversation about clinical experience. Clinical experience is completely different from the experience of owning and running a private practice.

So many internship preceptors preach to their interns that clinical experience is a requirement for becoming a successful dietitian, and this just isn’t true if you want to run a private practice.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Alex’s story of deciding not to get clinical experience
    • Starting out in private practice
    • Growing as a counselor
    • Running a private practice as a partnership

Behind the Scenes of Writing and Publishing a Book with Robyn Goldberg Jun 29, 2020

In this episode, Robyn Goldberg and I are deep diving into the process of writing and publishing a book, and we focus specifically on the business aspect of this amazing endeavor.

Robyn recently released a book, The Eating Disorder Trap: A Guide for Clinicians and Loved Ones. The book is awesome, and while I’m so excited for everyone to hear more about the book itself, we also talk about the process of writing a book as a business opportunity.

The book is just the tip of the iceberg for Robyn. She has so many incredible ideas about marketing a book and getting the message out, and she shares about what she wants her life to look like in the future.

I hope this episode will inspire you to start thinking big, too! What if you put your heart and soul into a project like this? What would that look like? What could it do for your business? How could it support your mission?

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Making the decision to write a book
    • The book writing process
    • Self-publishing vs. working with a publisher
    • Marketing her book during the pandemic

[Repost] Diversity in Dietetics Jun 08, 2020

This week on the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast, I’ve decided to re-air an episode that was originally out in March with Tamara Melton titled Diversity in Dietetics.

This issue is so important to our field. With everything going on around the United States with the Black Lives Matter movement, I really do think that we have to start talking about diversity more as providers to support the dieticians that are black in our field. We should be thinking about how we can lift them up and move forward as a profession.

As a white provider, I was silent last week. I wanted to listen and really think about how I could help our profession best move forward. One of the statistics that came across my Instagram feed was that only 2.3% of dietitians are black. I knew the statistic was low, but I honestly did not know just how low it really is. 2.3% is not okay, it’s disgraceful.

It is so important for dietitians to realize that we can have an impact in increasing the diversity in our field. I know that I want to support Diversify Dietetics in this mission, so I am so excited to re-air this episode with Tamara. She gives us so many different things to think about in this episode to help us better support dietitians of color.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • How Diversify Dietetics is passionate about empowering students and professionals of color to help them become the leaders of the next generation in dietetics.
    • Why micro-aggression and unconscious bias can create a barrier to learning and creativity for students of color in all-white learning environments.

How to Pivot Your Business Jun 01, 2020

This week’s episode topic was requested by a listener! I always assume that if someone takes the time to email me about a topic, many more of you are wondering the same thing, so I am so excited to bring you today’s episode about pivoting in your business.

Business owners usually pivot (change direction) for one of two reasons: they either want to better serve their customers and clients, or they want to better serve themselves!

Maybe you are newly passionate about something and want to add an offer, but are worried you might confuse your audience. Or maybe you aren’t excited about your current offer any more and want to move away from it, but you don’t want to disappoint anyone. You are allowed to change your mind! People change as they gain experience, and that’s a good thing! You should never feel “stuck” in your own business.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Common changes people make to their business
    • Why someone would pivot their business
    • How to make the process of pivoting your own business as smooth as possible

Letting Your Business Evolve with Melainie Rogers May 25, 2020

Melainie Rogers is someone that I have looked up to for a very long time. I was lucky enough to get to know her while I was living in New York City, even though I wasn’t necessarily practicing in the eating disorder field like I am now.

I’ve always known about her and her treatment center and I’m just in awe of what she’s built. It’s such an honor for me to have her on the podcast.

She talks about her unique journey of going from solo dietitian in private practice to a group private practice, to actually building a treatment center that truly supports her mission to support eating disorder recovery and her clients in the best way possible. She’s also growing her virtual practice and offers a variety of online courses that are especially helpful during this COVID-19 crisis.

Melanie has such an incredible mission for her company, I’m excited to see what’s next for her!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Melainie’s incredible journey to CEO of BALANCE Eating Disorder Treatment Center™
    • Giving ourselves permission to pivot and evolve in our businesses when we feel called to

I’m so excited for everyone to get to know her and get inspired by how she brings a unique twist to Intuitive Eating as a registered nurse. Setting Boundaries that Honor Your Values with Stefani Reinold May 11, 2020

I’m so excited to finally bring you an episode with Stefani Reinold. She is one of my best business friends. We have had many different versions of this conversation privately, and we kept saying, “We should record this!” because we knew that it could be helpful to others as we are all processing our own version of the new normal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stefani brings so much to this conversation -- she has her MD, a background in psychiatry, and is now a therapeutic provider. Many dietitians don't have therapeutic training unless they’re in the eating disorder field and are receiving their own supervision and training. This conversation will be very helpful to so many people as we continue to process our own thoughts, feelings, and emotions around the COVID-19 crisis and try to determine how to best move forward while also taking care of ourselves (that’s number one!), our families, our business and clients, and all of the new responsibilities that many of us now have.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Processing our experiences (and an explanation of what “processing” actually means!)
    • Handling outside pressure and feeling guilty for taking a break
    • Setting boundaries that honor our values
    • The importance of supervision for clinicians

How to Market Yourself as an Anti-Diet Intuitive Eating Dietitian May 04, 2020

This episode is about a topic that is near and dear to my heart: marketing yourself as an anti-diet intuitive eating dietitian. I really hope this message impacts you and helps you move forward in your business!

Sometimes it seems like everyone out there is an anti-diet intuitive eating dietitian with a virtual practice, right?! So many of us have moved our practice to a virtual model, and we’re all teaching the same type of content and offering the same type of services to our clients.

This is why it is so important as a dietitian that you infuse your personality and put your own spin on your messaging and your offers. There are going to be people who truly resonate with YOU, and those are your ideal clients. There are also going to be people who do not resonate with you, and that’s great too! They aren’t your ideal client. Trust me, there are more than enough clients to go around!

When you have a message and a mission that is out there to the world that really attracts your ideal person, it is so much better for the health and longevity of your business! Now is the perfect time to work on this. What can you do right now to attract the people that are perfect for you?

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • You are your own business, and you see things through your own eyes
    • Specializing within a sub-niche (a niche within a niche!)
    • Pivoting to be helpful now
    • The power of community in marketing

Starting a Business in the Midst of Uncertainty with Alexis Demuth Apr 27, 2020

I felt so inspired after this interview with Alexis Demuth. Alexis’s story involves being laid off from her job and deciding to start her own business just a week before Coronavirus began to shut the country down! If you are in a similar situation, I hope that this interview gives you hope and inspiration and maybe even the courage to finally get into business if it’s something that you’ve always wanted to do!

Those of us who already have an established business of our own are struggling right now too. COVID-19 has thrown so much of our “normal” out the window, and it can feel like we are starting from square one some days. I know we will get through this and the lessons we learn will make as better clinicians. I want to encourage you in that truth today, too.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Starting a business during the Coronavirus crisis
    • Moving through the grief process and the nuances of feelings
    • What Alexis’ business journey has looked like this past month
    • The importance of continuing your business education
    • Imposter syndrome

Online Education and Authentic Online Marketing with Stephanie Clairmont Apr 20, 2020

The timing of this episode is so perfect with what is going on in the world right now. The Coronavirus has forced many of us to take our practice online. We’re settling into a new normal, and many of us are beginning to think about how to serve our clients in a virtual way that creates an experience in online education.

Stephanie and I recorded this episode way back in January. I had planned to do a series about online education in April, and obviously scrapped those plans after the pandemic. But I still wanted to release this episode at a time when it could truly be as helpful as I originally had planned on, and today feels like that time!

That being said, I do want to put a disclaimer on this episode: if Stephanie and I had had any notion of what our situation would look like with Coronavirus today, we would have said many things differently. I would have been a lot more sensitive to people’s trauma and grief and unique situations.

However, I do think that the message of the episode would have been very similar. The world was moving toward an online model to begin with before Coronavirus. Now it is the only model we have at this present time. How can we adapt to this model with our clients so that we are able to serve them as best as we possibly can?

Stephanie is a leader in the online education space, and she shares so much of that wisdom and expertise with us today!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Why you should have an online program/offer
    • What you need to have in place before setting up an online program
    • Authentic, non sleazy, online marketing!
    • Current trends in online education
    • Delegation

Navigating Uncertainty During a Crisis with Fiona Sutherland Apr 13, 2020

Fiona is the first guest that I interviewed post-Coronavirus outbreak. This episode is the perfect way to open up the really difficult conversations that we are going to be having moving forward as the crisis continues and both our clients and ourselves attempt to navigate the uncertainty. The work that we do with our clients is completely different than it was prior to this crisis.

This is an unprecedented time in our world, and we need to continue to have these conversations. None of us have the answers. All we can really do is bond together, build community, go forward in our businesses, and try to do the very best that we can.

This conversation with Fiona helped me tremendously, it felt like a supervision session. Our clients need us now more than ever. We need each other now more than ever. I hope that this episode brings you some peace and some permission to feel all the feelings, and I hope that this episode brings you some joy!

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • What can we do when it feels like the world is crashing down around us?
    • Can we actually still run our businesses right now? + the advice I wish I could have given myself two weeks ago!
    • Best practices for running a virtual practice
    • The importance of having our own self-care practices in place

Giving Yourself Permission Apr 06, 2020

I’m taking some time today to talk about how I’m feeling, how my business is doing, and what I’m doing differently to best serve my clients. I hope this serves as an inspiration to you to think outside the box yourself right now: What can you do to serve your people? What do you need right now to take care of yourself? What do you need to do to be the best possible version of yourself right now without feeling rooted in “shoulds”?

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • The impact of the Coronavirus on the intuitive eating world and the importance of continuing to show up for the people that need to hear your message the most
    • Giving yourself and your clients permission to feel whatever needs to be felt right now
    • Figuring out a “new normal” for the time being
    • Cultivating resiliency and being grateful for the lessons we’ve learned through navigating other hard times in life
    • How to move forward in your business and support your people
    • The power of community and connection. Who can you connect with today that will feed your soul?

The Importance of Self-care for Clinicians with Anna Sweeney Mar 30, 2020

The topic of self-care is more important than ever, and Jennifer welcomes Anna Sweeney to better understand and define what it means, on this inspiring episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast.

Anna shares her journey of discovering Intuitive Eating while working as an eating disorder dietitian, and how she regrets the way she had been previously working with clients, motivating her to learn more and expand her understanding of Health At Every Size®. She tells how she started out in private practice part-time while still working at a clinic, and with her chronic health condition becoming more challenging, her transition to open a solo practice, Whole Life Nutrition, to better accommodate her circumstances.

Together, they shine a light on self-care and how Anna now balances her changing self-care needs with the challenges of clinical work and running a business. She explains how her condition forces her to be more thoughtful of boundaries and limitations, and work in alignment with her values and needs. They also discuss how demonstrating self-care for ourselves as a provider is a good role-model for clients.

“It’s really important for us as well to acknowledge and make space for our own stuff. I don’t think it makes us less effective at our jobs; quite contrary, we learn more about ourselves and are able to provide more quality care because of our life experiences.” – Anna Sweeney

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • How her vulnerability with a disability levels the field and deepens her connection with clients, by being a human first, practitioner second.
    • Her definition of self-care with her changing needs, and how she has to continually re-define what that looks like.
    • Her reflection on the success of her Instagram account, and how she shares her writing skills to talk about things that really matter.

“Self-care makes it possible for us to do this work, particularly from a running a business perspective. Making sure we are tending to ourselves in all the ways makes it possible to show up in the best of ways professionally.” – Anna Sweeney

Creating a Professional Eating Disorders Membership with Sumner Brooks Mar 23, 2020

Sumner Brooks, founder of EDRDPro sits down with Jennifer on this inspiring episode of the Pursuing Private Podcast. You’ll hear Sumner’s journey of embracing Intuitive Eating, how a business idea kept her up all night, and how EDRDPro is uplifting the dietetics industry with training for eating disorder around the world.

Together they begin with Sumner sharing her own journey of disordered eating throughout her youth and school, including as a dietetic intern. She shares the pivotal and life-changing moment of seeing Evelyn Tribole speak at a CE event, which ultimately led her to find her own path of Intuitive Eating.

Specializing as sports dietitian early in her career, she tells how her personal recovery journey influenced her professional work, and her desire to stay in private practice in order to specialize in eating disorders.

With sudden life changes including a new baby, a divorce, and a move to Portland, OR requiring the closure of her practice in her familiar community, Sumner reflects on starting fresh in a new location with no connections or referrals, making it necessary to take on jobs in the corporate world for several stressful years.

You’ll love hearing how the conception of EDRDpro was born from an idea that kept her up all night; an idea for a solution to affordable and accessible training in the eating disorders community.

“I really think that all dietitians need to have training on eating disorders, simply because of the prevalence of eating disorders.” - Sumner Brooks

With the creative spark ignited to bring ED training online for better accessibility, Jennifer was the first person Sumner called with her new idea and business plan. Launched as a yearly symposium, you’ll hear how EDRDPro has evolved since its inception, with two symposiums in 2020 that are focused on core themes, such as a deeper dive into a 6-session symposium in April on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

“I really hope what we’re doing here is something that will feel like more than just an introductory step, and really give people a hearty dose of something useful.” - Sumner Brooks

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Sumner’s process of trying different things in her business that didn’t work, and why she took a break and stepped back for a year.
    • The creative process of building EDRDPro, why she created a membership branch, how it’s changing for 2020 with deeper training on core themes, and the launch of EDRDpro Ambassadors.
    • Why the constantly changing and complex field of eating disorder requires more access to training, and why the learning never stops.
    • Why hiring experts is necessary to grow a business, and how collaboration within the eating disorder community helps broaden the perspective and interpretation of Intuitive Eating, and the value from sharing, discussion and collaboration.
    • Her passion for helping dietitians with their own healing process and then helping them take it to the next level of helping others, with the goal of reaching more people to minimize the suffering and time.

Diversity in Dietetics with Tamara Melton Mar 16, 2020

Jennifer is thrilled to welcome Tamara Melton to share her game-changing mission of diversifying the dietetics industry, on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast.

Co-founder of Diversify Dietetics, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the racial and ethnic diversity in the field of nutrition, Tamara shares the story of its launch in April 2018 and why it is so needed.

With an academic background of teaching nutrition at a university in Atlanta, Tamara shines a light on the lack of diversity in the demographic profile of dietitians, and why that is not only a barrier to attracting new students, but also creates a lack of diverse practitioners to help people of color. With full acknowledgement of how the industry is currently not reflective of the diversity of people it serves, Tamara and Jennifer discuss the dire need for more diverse providers to refer to.

“There was no organization out there that is doing what needs to be done to successfully attract, recruit, and retain students, interns and professionals of color.” – Tamara Melton

You’ll hear how, along with co-founder Deanna Belleny, Diversify Dietetics was created to provide a community to attract, encourage, and empower students and young professionals of color who were seeking careers in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

With a mission to break down the boundaries of stereotypical dietitians, its goal is also to better serve people of cultural diversity who might not otherwise seek out care, or seek out practitioners they identify with regardless of their level of training. Tamara speaks to the incredible opportunity for diverse practitioners to fill this gap in the industry.

Addressing the practical concerns of dietetics as a lucrative career choice, Tamara explains why Diversify Dietetics also helps support entrepreneurship with business training, to attract more diverse students to the industry and take the risk of starting a private practice.

Now, as a community and a point of contact for anyone who’s looking for a dietitian of color in any state, Tamara shares her hopes and dedication to continuing the diversification of dietitians.

“We wanted to create an organization that would create an answer to any obstacle that students or professionals of color might come up against as they’re getting through their educational pathway, and trying to anchor themselves in this profession.” – Tamara Melton

Collaboration Over Competition with Haley Goodrich Mar 09, 2020

HAES® informed eating disorders dietitian Haley Goodrich joins Jennifer for an informative and heartwarming discussion on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast.

Co-founder of INSPIRD to SEEK, a community for weight-inclusive healthcare professionals, Haley shares her story of how she evolved to become an advocate and educator of the HAES approach to dietetics. After quickly discovering early in her career that clinical dietetics was not her jam, she reflects how becoming an entrepreneur was the only way to practice the way she wanted. After opening a private practice which grew quicker than she anticipated, she studied Intuitive Eating as a tool, learned more about how to teach her clients about HAES, and worked toward being an eating disorders dietitian.

Now running a group practice with two other dietitians, Haley discusses the process of hiring, the satisfaction of employing others, and how success in a private practice is not always based on the numbers, but sustained growth by creating relationships with referral sources and practitioners in the area.

“I was tired of living really small, and I’d rather take a risk and live a bigger life than feel really safe inside my comfort zone, and I’ll figure it out.” – Haley Goodrich

Haley also tells how she took on the Eating Disorders Chair position in the Behavioral Health and Nutrition dietetic practice group from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, how it has helped her to communicate strategically, and the importance of HAES being embraced in the academy. She also shares how INSPIRD to SEEK evolved out of her own need for community at a time before any Facebook groups, and being the only HAES practitioner in Pittsburgh, PA.

Together they shine a light on the topic of collaboration instead of competition in the niche of anti-diet practitioners, and how we all bring our own message that is unique to help each other learn and grow.

“I truly think that competition in this space is a way to distract ourself from the real purpose of our work. We don’t need to compete against each other. We’re going against the grain and a $70 billion diet industry; that’s who we need to compete against.” – Haley Goodrich

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • The privilege of being a Dietitian and being able to take the risk of being a business owner.
    • The challenge of finding balance her professional and personal life.
    • The importance of boundaries, how they shift, and managing time on social media.
    • Her passion for supporting dietitians in private practice to shift to a weight-inclusive approach.
    • Her advice to new dietitians.

Building a Business as an Anti-Diet Dietitian, with Christy Harrison Mar 02, 2020

Jennifer welcomes Christy Harrison to this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice podcast to share her journey of becoming an Anti-Diet Registered Dietitian and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. As an industry leader, Christy is a passionate anti-diet advocate, educator and published author, and you’ll love hearing her story of how she built a successful business in alignment with her values.

Reflecting on her own eating disorder, Christy shares her winding journey of discovering HAES and Intuitive eating. Working as a journalist in her first career and reporting on health and nutrition at a food magazine, her own recovery fueled her interest to return to school to become a registered dietitian.

Starting her private practice early on with the specialization of disordered eating, she recalls how she ardently pursued continuing education and deepened her learning of Intuitive Eating, and why she started her podcast to get at the heart of people’s relationship with food.

“If we want to prevent eating disorders at a public health level, we have to change the culture so people are not triggered into disordered eating by weight stigma.” – Christy Harrison

You’ll hear Christy’s process of creating her first online course - Intuitive Eating Fundamentals, plus all the steps she took with her first book deal, from pitching proposals to final product, and how working with a publishing company that believes in the Anti-Diet message was key.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • How her entrepreneurial family, and experience with freelance journalism prepared her for private practice and developed her business acumen and money mindset.
    • Why she chose the direction of reaching more people with courses and writing a book instead of expanding her solo practice into a group practice.
    • How she took her one-on-one client’s experiences and education piece of Intuitive Eating to build the structure of her course, and why working one-on-one for several years first was essential to its success.
    • The power of the community that comes along with the online course and the need for more ongoing community support to help eating disorder recovery.
    • Recognizing the privilege of being a successful entrepreneur and having time for creativity to write a book; the realization of her childhood dream.

You’ll hear the process of how Marci transitioned from a solo practice to a thriving group practice, and the necessary risks involved. Along the way of building a thriving group practice and online training programs, Marci explains the absolute necessity of having a team of people to help get it all done.

Intuitive Eating for Cancer Treatment with Amber Thomas Feb 10, 2020

Jennifer is delighted to welcome Amber Thomas to this informative episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast. As a Registered Dietitian specializing in Cancer Nutrition, Amber shares her journey and expertise of bridging an Intuitive Eating, weight-inclusive practice with oncology nutrition.

Having specialized in oncology for her entire dietetics career of 16 years, Amber tells how she became concerned with seeing cancer patients that wanted regimented diet protocols, and how they feared food and judged themselves for what they ate. When her friend and fellow dietitian Melissa Preston gave her the Intuitive Eating book, it transformed her approach with guiding her patients to a better relationship with food.

She also shares how Intuitive Eating helps patients heal after treatment from the psychological impact of cancer that can create a dissociation and mistrust of the body, and how the principles guide them to trust and listen to their body again.

“This is where I need to be guiding people to a better relationship with food, so they can choose foods that are health-promoting after cancer treatment, and not fear food like I was seeing.” – Amber Thomas

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • Why she transitioned to private practice after working at a cancer center for 10 years, and how she found an online coaching approach to oncology nutrition. She feels it works the best to provide better support for her clients, and that online coaching provides balance with her family.
    • The dynamics of working with the intersection between cancer, Intuitive Eating, and HAES, and how Medical Nutrition Therapy and Intuitive Eating can be integrated together.
    • What dietitians need to know about cancer nutrition research, such as the harm in popular “prevention" food messages with black and white language, and how weight stigma shows up in cancer care.
    • Why some Intuitive Eating principles have a lot of nuance during cancer treatments when tuning into the body is compromised, such as the signals of hunger/fullness and taste, and when flexibility is required.
    • Why she wishes dietitians understood more about the trauma cancer patients experience, and encourages them to improve their counselling skills to better meet the patient where they’re at (financially, emotionally, physically) with more sensitivity to their circumstances.
    • How being consistent with her message and offerings have benefited her private practice, and her plans for 2020 which include starting a podcast to provide education with a different message about cancer nutrition.

There are many pathways to a full-time private practice, and Jennifer’s guest Glenys Oyston shares her journey of an incremental process to realizing her dream. Listen to her inspiring story of discovering Health at Every Size, niching down, and overcoming impostor syndrome on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice podcast.

Glenys tells us about her experience of being a restrictive dieter in her twenties, and how she chose the Dietetics industry with the career goal of being a weight loss dietitian. Throughout her years of course work, her obsession with food restriction and fear of gaining weight was dominating her life, and upon discovering HAES as a student, reflects on the transformation it had on her perspective, breaking her free from the diet lifestyle.

Incorporating the principles of HAES with her inpatients and primary care work with spinal cord injuries and geriatrics, she met her future podcast partner Aaron Flores, RDN whom she learned about Intuitive Eating. All the while, she worked full-time with the dream of one day having her own private practice.

Glenys tells how she transitioned into a practice incrementally over three years, and dealt with impostor syndrome by pushing through and learning by doing.

    • The journey of starting her private practice with an incremental progression over several years; first with a blog in late 2014, ‘Dare to Not Diet’, then a podcast in 2015 with Aaron Flores, to taking her first clients in 2016.
    • How she learned as she went, and has benefited from being one of the first to join the Pursuing Private Practice program (hyperlink?). https://jennifermcgurkrdn.teachable.com/p/ppp-for-ie
    • How she dealt with fear of failure and impostor syndrome at each stage, and has built confidence by taking action and putting things in perspective to enjoy the ride.
    • Why she has narrowed down her niche of only working in areas she enjoys, and knows when to refer clients to other dietitians, without considering them as competition.
    • The realization of her dream of full-time practice, and by making space for networking, more clients came.

“I’m in competition with the diet industry. I don’t buy the traditional competition model. I’m there to lift up my fellow dietitians.” – Glenys Oyston

Providing events focused on continuing education and connection for weight-inclusive dietitians, WIND fills a gap in the industry by bringing dietitians together for community, education and connection where weight-inclusive care is the norm.

The story of how WIND was conceived, launched and has evolved is what Heather shares with Jennifer in this episode. Together they explore the definition of burnout, and shine a light on the causes of it from not only the complexities of the dietitian industry and our clients, but also from the anxiety and uncertainty that the online world can cause private practice owners. They reflect on the need to have honest conversations with ourselves and acknowledge how this work can be exhausting with the pressures to manage all aspects of the job.

What is Private Practice Success? Nov 25, 2019

In this solo episode, Jennifer takes you on a deep dive about the topic of success as a dietitian business owner, and in particular, reflects on how success is defined by you personally.

With the weight-inclusive, HAES and Intuitive Eating approach yet to become mainstream in our profession, the trend is seeing many dietitians moving to private practice in order to truly align with their values as a provider, make a difference in the world, and “succeed” on their own terms.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    • If the definition of “success” truly means what you think it means.
    • How success changes as your life and business changes.
    • How being in private practice with you as the boss allows you to succeed at providing care that is impactful.
    • Why dietitians need community and additional business and nutritional counselling skills training to have confidence to build a business.

We ask our clients to do hard work every single day in order to succeed at healing their relationship with food. We as private practice owners have to ask ourselves to do that hard work too, because growing a business is a journey that is hard and full of ups and downs but it’s sooo worth it.

The main message from this episode is this; if you have the passion to truly create success on your own terms, your business will be successful, and you WILL be making a difference.
