Naked and Unashamed Feb 01, 2024

In this episode of Pursuing Faith, Dominic explores John 8, and the words Jesus spoke to a woman who was full of shame. He said to her, “neither do I condemn you, go your way and sin no more."

When we are in a place of shame, the natural response is to hide our truest self or to push people away. For example, in the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve ate of a tree and realized they were ‘naked and ashamed’ and immediately hid from God. Shame always causes isolation, because intimacy is the risk that our shame will be exposed. In the words of Bene Brown, “Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change.”

But here’s the good news: because of grace, we don’t have to live in shame anymore.

In a world that continuously lies about our identity, that loves to remind us of all that we’re not — not rich enough, smart enough, good-looking enough, or famous enough—God says: You are mine. And you always have been. Nothing can change that. You are not defined by the mistakes you’ve made but by the grace of God.

Breaking Bread with the Dead: How Reading Shapes Your Intellectual and Spiritual Journey Jan 12, 2024

In this episode, Dominic has a conversation with Joseph Clair. Joseph serves as the executive dean of the Cultural Enterprise, which encompasses the humanities, theology, and education. He is also dean of the College of Humanities and an associate professor of theology and culture.

Before joining the George Fox faculty in 2013, he earned his PhD in the religion, ethics and politics program at Princeton University while also working as an assistant in instruction. His efforts were rewarded with a Department of Religion Teaching Award (2011-12) and a Graduate Prize Fellowship from Princeton’s Center for Human Values (2012-13).

Prior to Princeton, Clair earned an MPhil at the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. He also holds master’s degrees from Fordham and Duke University, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College.

His research and teaching interests include Christian thought and ethics and the role of religion in public life. He is the author of Discerning the Good in the Letters and Sermons of Augustine (Oxford UP, 2016) and Reading Augustine: On Education, Formation, Citizenship, and the Lost Purpose of Learning (Bloomsbury, 2018).

Flourish: Breathe Again Jul 18, 2022

He then unpacks 2 Peter 1 as a roadmap towards a flourishing life. Peter writes: “Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.”
The first gift on this list of virtues is ‘goodness.’ But what does Peter mean by that? What does that look like when our soul’s are fatigued or gasping for air? Dominic suggests that adding to our faith goodness means intentionally creating space for intimacy with God.

Questions: Why is God Silent? Feb 01, 2022

Of all the causes of doubt in our lives, the silence of God is hardest to understand. In some ways, it’s similar to the doubts we experience when we suffer; but it comes at us in a different way. Suffering is often caused by a sudden, catastrophic event. But the silence of God can be glacial. It slowly gnaws at us, and has the potential to shake our faith. According to the philosopher, Michael Rae: “God’s silence is painful for us. Many believers experience crippling doubt, overwhelming sadness, and ultimate loss of faith as a result of ongoing silence…many people have been positively damaged by divine silence.”

Redeeming Your Story with Charles Mugisha Nov 18, 2019

Dominic Done sits down with Charles Mugisha, the founder of Africa New Life, to discuss his story, the Rwandan genocide, and the healing he has experienced even after living much of his life in war-torn countries, as a refugee and as a child soldier.
Charles was born to a Rwandan family living as refugees in Uganda. His parents fled Rwanda after the first genocide in 1959. Life was not easy for refugees in a war-stricken Uganda under the rule of several dictators. It was during this time that Charles learned how to pray.
As the war came to an end, Charles wanted to return to school. Desperate for an education he began praying in his own words. As tears poured down his face Charles felt connected to God for the first time. He began to attend church in a neighboring village and gave his life to Christ. Just a few weeks later, Charles joined with other young people and began preaching the gospel on the streets.
After attending College in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, Charles began ministry in a nearby suburban of Kampala in Gaba to work with a church planter. Although the spiritual opposition in that village was strong, Charles and his mentor, Pastor Peter Kasirivu prayed and persevered in ministry. Eventually, a church was established and hundreds of people started coming to Christ. Today a church of more than 2,000 people and various ministries to the poor are in that community.
In the early nineties, Charles was a missionary in England and Northern Ireland. In 1995, after the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, Charles returned to his family in Uganda and discovered that his father had returned to Rwanda. Charles followed. Even though the war had ended, Charles saw signs of death everywhere. When he saw the orphaned, widowed and homeless, Charles knew he had to do something to help these people.
Charles received an invitation to attend Multnomah University in Portland, Oregon. With the help of churches and individuals, Charles arrived in the U.S. with his wife, Florence, and their son, Isaac. His burden to help Rwandan children, refugees and the genocide survivors remained on his heart.
In 2001, while in seminary, Charles wrote the ministry plan for Africa New Life. And that summer he and Florence returned to Rwanda to see what God wanted to do with them and through the ministry. When they returned the U.S. for the next semester, Charles and Florence brought 30 pictures of children who needed to be sponsored and the ministry was born.
Today Africa New Life provides for more than 10,000 children on track toward high school graduation, vocational training, or a university degree.
Charles completed his Doctorate through Gordon Conwell Seminary in 2015. Together, he and Florence are raising their four children, Isaac, Jonathan, Sarah, and Joseph, in Rwanda.
