131 Characteristics of an Athletic Mindset (Or, How to Be Like Pro, Sarah Piampiano) Aug 26, 2020
    Show notes

If 2020 was a chapter in an athlete story, it would be classified as a massive challenge and a setback that includes disappointment and most certainly failure.

But, the great athlete would navigate, learn, and overcome. A great athlete has the tools and wisdom to realize the path of performance is never linear. Today is Part Two on our series of performance culture and the athletic mindset. Last week, we dug into the cultural model of performance. It's the model that we utilize at Purple Patch and it is a way of doing something that unites individuals and creates a collective resilience.

And at the end of the day, the individuals that thrive within that culture lean into a suite of traits and characteristics that make up what we call the athletic mindset. Now, we've learned over the last few months of turbulence, that these traits are the very traits that foster the resilience, adaptability and the growth needed, not to just navigate, but to thrive through these times.

What are these characteristics and traits? Matt digs in, dissects, and tells stories about the athlete journey and, of course, the athlete mindset. You do not need to be an athlete to lean into the athletic mindset. We're discussing life here: how to thrive, how to rise up, how to grow in the challenge, how to improve your personal resilience, and how to optimize your health.

So no matter what your sporting background, you're going to benefit from this episode on developing an athletic mindset.

129 Matt Revisits Episodes on Leadership and Resilience Aug 12, 2020
    Show notes

We're midway through the year and now is an appropriate time to take a step back and reflect on the unpredictable and unprecedented year we've had so far. For better or worse, it has forced change, but it is not too late to step up and lead.

This "Best of" revisits a few episodes on the importance of strong leadership and building resilience. Even if you've already listened, we invite you to:

    • Listen again now that we're a few months into this new normal
    • Absorb and take what is useful to you and your current situation
    • Use it to support each other, your friends, and your family
    • Share this episode and apply to your teams

Take note, coaches and managers: It isn't all a disaster! It is, however, time to step up and lead. You have tools at your disposal to help and it just takes a little dose of clarity, communication, planning, and leaning into your biggest assets you have: your athletes. Leaders? Same applies. It is time to plan, communicate, and lean into YOUR biggest assets - your employees.

Help them to develop a platform of resilience, provide a release from their rigors and stressors, ensure they feel connected, and continue to lead with a sense of purpose and direction.

Sounds super. BUT HOW you ask? That is the theme of this episode.

127 Heather Grahame - An Athlete's Adventurous Multisport Journey to Joy Jul 29, 2020
    Show notes

Matt welcomes Purple Patch athlete, Heather Grahame, to discuss her adventurous multisport journey to joy.

Based in Helena MT, Grahame spent 100k miles on a plane last year as lead counsel of a publicly-traded public utility. Now, in 2020, she finds herself grounded (literally and physically) because of our new normal. Instead of going random, Heather doubled-down on her training regime and growth mindset.

Her varied life's journey included financial and emotional instability as a child and teenager, but in conflict, came resolve and a work ethic that led to a stint at Stanford University, and athletic achievements in field hockey, soccer, cycling time trial championships in Alaska, dog sled racing, and, of course, triathlon -- all while traveling extensively for her work and raising two daughters with her husband.

If you are looking to set your path for the rest of 2020, you could do worse than draw from the lessons and perspective of Heather.

She has found joy, direction, purpose and FUN through her training.

126 Jeff Troesch, Performance and Mental Coach - Part 2 - Dealing with THE NOW Jul 22, 2020
    Show notes

Performance and Mental Coach, Jeff Troesch, returns this week to talk about navigating THE NOW - this era of COVID-19 and the lack of races and our usual structured season.

A mental coach is often forgotten until you face adversity. They're often viewed as "fixers," but as this episode shows, continually working on your mental skills is all about performance enhancement and not necessarily fixing something that is broken.

    • What is the best way for you to approach and tackle the challenges that we are faced with now and for the foreseeable future?

    • What are some of the mental exercises that the pros and elites employ?
    • How can you avoid the "f*ck its" in a time that may be filled with disappointment and apathy?

    • What is the right balance between empathy and pulling yourself up from the bootstraps?

We understand the inclination without races is to fall into random training, but know this: when you fall into a random training structure, your entire life becomes random and rudderless.

Leverage this time to not just emerge stronger, but come out with renewed focus and gratitude.

123 Effective Coaching and Leadership- Leaning Into Your Biggest Assets Jul 01, 2020
    Show notes

Today's show focuses on effective leadership - looking ahead over the coming months on how coaches should consider approaching the uncertainty with their athletes. Coaches are leaders and there is plenty to draw from in this show.

Take note, coaches, and managers. It isn't all a disaster! Yes, your team.

You have an important role to play, and here is a clue. It isn't just about getting athletes ready to race. As a coach, your role expands beyond this. Your role is to help athletes navigate the uncertainty, stress, and turbulence. You should be delivering an approach that focuses on:

    • A great platform of health and resilience.

    • A release from the rigors and stressors of life.

    • A framework that can help focus, energy, and mood.

    • Help your athletes with a sense of purpose and direction.

    • Ensure they are connected and feel a part of something: It is tougher to navigate alone

    • If races do happen to emerge, then have them ready to perform.

So, yes, you have an important role. The journey of performance for your athletes doesn't pause just because of all this happening. You still want them to IMPROVE and move forward.

    This episode outlines the "How."
