Daily Puck Drop: Mike Garafolo, NFL Network: Longstanding issues with Grubb/Macdonald. Michael-Shawn Dugar, The Athletic: Seahawks biggest issue is the front office Jan 09, 2025
    Show notes

Today’s Daily Puck Drop got off to a delayed start with Jason “Puck” Puckett not being able to get the gremlins under control!

Guests on today include: Mike Garafolo, NFL Network and Michael-Shawn Dugar, The Athletic

(0:00) - Mike Garafolo, NFL Network jumps on the show right away because he has things to do ! Or, he is taking his young daughter to the doctor…nothing serious, just the flu. Anyways, Puck and Mike jump right into the decision to fire Ryan Grubb and what direction they know will go in. Mike goes over a number of candidates that may be interested in the job, including Chip Kelly. Mike also describes that the relationship between Grubb and Mike Macdonald may have been one that was destined to end in failure from the get go. Pete Carroll is interviewing for the Bears job, is he a legitimate candidate for the job? Is Deion Sanders positioning himself for an NFL job by getting a team to draft both of his sons?

(13:19) - After a brief visit with Garafolo, Puck apologizes for the late start to the show over technical issues and dives deeper into the firing of Grubb and going over all the rumored candidates that the Seahawks may interview. He looks back to last years candidates and it offers a preview into this years group. Also touch in on the Mariners and recap Wednesday’s conversation with Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times on the inactivity of the Mariners in the offseason.

(41:28) - Michael-Shawn Dugar, The Athletic joins for his weekly conversation about all things Seahawks. Did he see the Grubb firing happening? Does he agree with the decision? What candidates should the Seahawks be looking at? Mike cites the biggest issues with the team, offensive and defensive line. How much more time does the front office get since they haven’t been able to fix the lines?

(1:21:40) - “Hey, What the Puck!?” Doesn’t matter who the offensive coordinator is next season if you don’t have improvement on the offensive line. If they struggle, it will be the same issues that has plagued this franchise for the past decade.

Daily Puck Drop: "System Update!" Rob Staton says Ryan Grubb firing right move. Ryan Divish on the Mariners lack of moves Jan 08, 2025
    Show notes

They open up the show talking about the firing of Ryan Grubb and if they agreed with the move and what they will look at next for their offensive coordinator. Lastly, before Jim leaves, they chat about the new Tiger Woods indoor golf league that debuted on Tuesday night. Some good and some bad about the new venture.

(33:39) Rob Staton, SeahawksDraftBlog.com joined the show to discuss the firing of Grubb. It’s been two weeks since Puck and Rob have chatted so there was a lot to go over, but the main topic of the segment was the removal of Grubb. Rob and Puck disagree on the decision, but came to the conclusion that Macdonald and Grubb simply didn’t mesh personality wise and if that’s truly the case than a move was to be made. But, as they have discussed in the past, when you have a defensive minded coach, like Macdonald, shuffling through offensive coordinators can be a problem and this will be a significant hire for Macdonald and Schneider.

(59:22) Ryan Divish, Seattle Times, is back after a two-week holiday break to jump on and talk about all the great moves the Mariners have made this offseason! Wait, no moves have been made and Divish and Puck discuss what the M’s have in store with many of their options drying up. Will they trade Luis Castillo? What free agents out there can help Seattle? Are they players for Japanese sensation Roki Sasaki? How cold is it truly in Havre, Montana, where Divish currently resides?!

(1:25:00) “Hey, What the Puck!?” Puck discusses the Jimmy Butler saga in the NBA and plays a clip from Charles Barkley and the TNT crew discussing the drama. What’s wrong with today’s professional athlete?

The Mariners still haven’t spent a dime this offseason, meanwhile, the Oakland A’s have dropped nearly $130 million dollars this offseason!

19:13 - Danny Kelly, The Ringer, joins Jason “Puck” Puckett for his weekly visit talking all things Seahawks and the NFL. Is it difficult for defensive minded coaches to hire consistently good offensive coordinators? Once a good OC has success they immediately get a head coaching opportunity. The Seahawks pick 18th in the NFL draft and Danny previews what players could be available with that pick and they end every show with “The Barge.” Puck sets his eyes on the creators of Landman.

45:38 - John Canzano, JohnCanzano.comjoins the show with host Jason “Puck” Puckett and they immediately jump into the failures of the Oregon football team in the Rose Bowl. Is Dan Lanning truly a good coach? Is Phil Knight running out of patience and time? The college football playoffs should look to the FCS and how to conduct the playoffs. WSU is giving their football assistants a pool of $4.5 million dollars. Why are the financial situations at WSU and Oregon State so different? Why don’t the Cougars invest liked the Beavers? When will college football change their transfer portal window? Lastly, did Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb make a mistake last year in leaving for bigger and better jobs?

    Show notes

To start the show, before Lofa jumps on, Puck expresses his surprise that Grubb was let go. He’s not going to die on the hill to support Grubb, but he thinks it was a mistake to move on after just one season, but Mike Macdonald has shown one thing as a new young football coach, he does not mess around and is willing to quickly pull the plug on personnel if it’s not working.

12:10 - Former Seahawks linebacker, Lofa Tatupu joins the show to react to the breaking news of the Ryan Grubb firing. Puck and Lofa also recap the season and look back on what worked and what did not. Was it the right choice to move on from Grubb and what does Lofa want to see in the next hire? They also discuss the future of Geno Smith and D.K. Metcalf. How much pressure is on John Schneider this offseason to fix his offensive line? Will they explore trading D.K. in the offseason?

1:31:22 - “Hey, What the Puck?!” Puck reacts to Steve Gleason, former WSU linebacker, who was diagnosed with ALS 14 years ago, and detailed via social media that he has lost the ability to communicate. Steve was using his eyes and a special computer program to communicate with his followers and family, unfortunately, he has now lost that ability. Puck calls Steve the greatest human being he’s ever encountered.

WSU AD Anne McCoy : Why Jimmy Rogers was the right fit and future of WSU athletics Jan 03, 2025
    Show notes

Washington State athletic director Anne McCoy joined Jason “Puck” Puckett to discuss the whirlwind that has been Washington State football in the last month. They discussed the Jake Dickert departure and whether or not Dickert and his representatives could have handled the situation better.

What happened to the roughly $2 million dollars that the Board of Regents earmarked for athletics and why did President Kirk Schulz not inform McCoy that they had the money for football and didn’t find out for nearly 6 weeks after which Dickert took the job at Wake Forest?

Anne talks about her current relationship with Schulz and the board of regents, are they truly on the same page and can communication be better between upper campus and athletics?

When did Jimmy Rogers land on her radar and what made Jimmy Rogers the right choice for WSU? Was Rogers the only candidate offered the job? How serious of candidates were Brent Vigen at Montana State and UCONN’s Jim Mora?

McCoy talks about the correlation between Rogers and basketball coach David Riley. Two young coaches who have had immense success at the lower level, but they also are significantly underpaid compared to their predecessors. How much did financials play a part in the hiring of Rogers?

McCoy says the football assistant pool will stay at $4.5 million. There were reports that it was going to be cut to $3.5 million. Have contract talks started with basketball coach David Riley and will there be beer sales at Martin Stadium next season? Lastly, is the Pac-12 closer to finding an eighth football school?
