PsychSessions: Conversations about Teaching N’ Stuff

The PsychSessions podcast is co-hosted by Garth Neufeld from Cascadia College and Eric Landrum from Boise State University. We leverage our connections with psychology teachers from all levels (high school, community college, college, university) and individuals from other occupations to have meaningful conversations about what it means to be an educator. Of course, we veer away from the teaching conversation from time to time to hear about origin stories and the personal perspectives of our guests, touching on current events and topics of interest.

E180: Ellen Langer: Mindful, Charming, Confident, Humble, Author (Again) Aug 29, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode Garth interviews Ellen Langer from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Early in September, look for the release of Ellen's new book, The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health. Garth and Ellen share a lovely and far-reaching conversation; she has been studying mindfulness for 45 years, with mindfulness being the process of noticing new things. However, she laments that virtually all of us are mindless almost all of the time! They discuss her research about how thoughts can lead to living longer and better, sometimes like a placebo effect. Ellen makes the sharp differentiation between mindfulness and meditation, saying that meditation is not mindful but that the practices are not mutually exclusive. Garth and Ellen delve into many topics in this interview, so much more than what is mentioned here.

E179: Ludy Benjamin: Sincere, Thoughtful, Influential, Humble, Storyteller, and a Lover of BBQ Aug 15, 2023
    Show notes

In this interview Garth and Jane Halonen (University of West Florida, Pensacola, FL) kick off their PsychSessions 2023 East Coast Tour with Ludy (Ben) Benjamin, professor emeritus, from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. This interview takes place in Ludy's home in Charlottesville, VA. His early aspirations were to become a physician and play as much golf as possible, but both aspirations changed. He earned his PhD in perception and began his career at Nebraska Wesleyan University, with a series of one-year contracts making just above qualifying for food stamps. He leaves NWU for a 2-year stint at the American Psychological Association, working in Educational Affairs, and it is there where Ben begins to launch projects and make an impact nationally. He then worked at Texas A&M University for the next 32 years, retiring in 2012. He taught Introduction to Psychology courses with 300 students for years, but his passion and expertise is the history of psychology. Ben is a storyteller at heart, so he is well-suited for historical studies, and psychology is clearly the beneficiary.

E177: Our Friend Rick Miller: In Memoriam, a Re-Release of Episode 051 Jul 18, 2023
    Show notes

This episode is a re-release of our previous episode E051.

On Friday, June 30, 2023, our beloved friend Dr. Rick Miller passed away. Rick had been ill for a couple of years and it appeared he was making a comeback; it was delightful for many of us to see him at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association meeting in Albuquerque, NM in April 2023.

Rick was a leader among leaders. He served as chair of the psychology departments at the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Texas A & M University – Kingsville. He served as President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association – and these leadership examples merely scratch the surface of his contributions. He was a prolific researcher and an award-winning teacher on a national level on multiple occasions.

We will dearly miss Rick. Our condolences go out to Jeanne and to everyone in Rick's family – and that includes his colleagues and his teaching of psychology friends worldwide. Please enjoy this interview from PsychSessions with Rick at his best, originally recorded October 2018 and released January 2019.

We also discuss the planning of distinguished speakers at conferences, inviting speakers, and the "inside baseball" about conferences. We then switch gears and chat about the individual career paths of Cheryl and Nancy, what they enjoy about their teaching, and what's next for each of them. We also reminisce about a fond Albert Bandura memory that the three of us share.
