S1E8 "The Old Head" | Guest Jessalyn Gilsig Auditioning For Sara | Challenges Facing Women On-Set Mar 13, 2024
    Show notes

Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein recap Prison Break Season 1, Episode 7 (“The Old Head”), highlighting the pressure-cooker plotting: Westmoreland sets a guard-room fire so Michael can access and dig for the escape plan, Veronica and Nick survive an attack that kills her neighbor, and Kellerman murders LJ’s mother and stepfather while revealing he reports to the U.S. vice president. They interview guest star Jessalyn Gilsig (Lisa Rix), discussing the challenges of guest roles, filming outside-the-prison storylines, and working with Marshall Allman. Gilsig shares she originally auditioned for Sarah’s role, reflects on advocating for character depth in TV, and tells stories from Glee and Vikings about creating subtext and influencing story direction. The conversation shifts to gendered power dynamics and harassment on sets, how MeToo reframed past experiences, and the importance of mentorship and safer workplaces. Fan questions include Lisa’s alternate future; closing bits cover her “last meal” (poached egg on toast) and advice: bring a pencil.

    ALSO - Jessalyn gives phenomenal acting advice that EVERYONE - both budding actors and pros alike - should listen to;

AND - a casting reveal is made! Who else was up to play Sara Tancredi???

FINALLY - Paul makes a semi-heartfelt apology to Jessalyn for killing her character. But is it really an apology? And is it really accepted? Eh...

    S1E7: "Riots, Drills, And The Devil Pt 2" | Michael & Sara's Crawlspace Scene | Sara's Deleted Scene Mar 06, 2024
    Show notes

Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein discuss the Prison Break podcast episode covering “Riots, Drills & The Devil” Part Two, highlighting production challenges of matching riot continuity across two separately directed episodes, and noting moments like the first reveal of T-Bag’s full name and the airplane set’s “movie magic.” Sarah shares a story about a deleted scene from “Allen” that was cut because her jittery performance led producers to suspect a cocaine problem after she drank decaf green tea. They talk about the “injury rule” (major characters heal faster for practical reasons), how squibs work, and a behind-the-scenes naming origin for “Cherry” tied to writer’s assistant Seth Hoffman. They analyze a key Michael/Sara crawlspace scene, including a rewritten Wentworth Miller monologue replaced with a Baja/Thailand speech, then broaden into how actors and writers collaborate on character, line changes, and maintaining continuity like Sara’s alcoholism. Fan questions prompt discussion of filming and sustaining fear in intense scenes, and Sarah describes how directors kept threat active on set to support her performance.

S1E6: "Riots, Drills, and the Devil Pt 1" | Michael Cudlitz (C.O. Bob) | How T-Bag Fight Went Wrong Feb 28, 2024
    Show notes

Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein introduce their Prison Break rewatch podcast episode “Riots, Drills, & The Devil” Part One, noting script revision page colors, an original title that used “Jesus” instead of “The Devil,” and a dialogue change in a Sarah/Michael scene to slow the romance. They briefly rewatch the episode, then welcome guest Michael Cudlitz (C.O. Bob), who discusses how he got involved with the show, working in Chicago at the real Joliet prison, and the pace and demands of TV guest roles. Cudlitz shares a stunt story involving being dragged on metal stairs and accidentally hit by Robert Knepper, while Sarah describes feeling protected during intense infirmary scenes and later learning a comment about her being “too tired” affected how much she was written into episodes. The conversation expands into safety protocols for screen violence, the realities of filming in a prison, and reflections on masculinity and changing on-set culture. Fan questions cover whether C.O. Bob helped Cudlitz’s career, recognition from fans, a fan-fiction scenario saving Bob, and his last meal choice.

S1E5: "English, Fitz Or Percy" | Paper Cranes & Michael's Sentimentality | Top Quotes | Stacy Keach Feb 21, 2024
    Show notes

Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein recap Prison Break season one’s “English, Fitz or Percy,” noting the episode’s sharp writing by the late Zach Estrin and honoring other cast members who have died, including DuShon Brown and John Heard. They highlight the episode’s standout moments and recurring phrases (“We got a runner,” “have a little faith,” and “We’re not breaking out of a Jamba Juice, gentlemen”), the first young Michael/Lincoln flashback, and Michael’s emerging sentimentality (the paper crane). Much of the discussion focuses on Stacy Keach’s career, craft, and performance as Pope, plus memories of working with him and Deanna Dunagan. They also discuss how TV in 2005 became more cinematic and the demands of close-up “act out” acting. In fan questions, they describe filming in a real prison, on-set relationships, scenes they wished for, and a line that caused repeated laughter, then announce a listener call-in line for voicemails and fandom stories.

S1E4: "Cute Poison" | Guest Silas Weir Mitchell | Haywire's Insight Into Michael | Fox River 8 Feb 14, 2024
    Show notes

Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein welcome their first actor guest, Silas Weir Mitchell, who played Haywire on Prison Break, to discuss the episode “Cute Poison” and Haywire’s characterization as mentally ill yet highly intelligent rather than generically “crazy.” Mitchell recalls filming at Joliet prison, describing its harsh conditions and eerie atmosphere, and explains how Haywire going off meds connects to his heightened perception of Michael Scofield’s plan. They talk about influences like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the show’s tightly plotted, dialogue-precise writing with minimal improvisation, and the value of letting scenes breathe compared to modern pacing. Mitchell reflects on being typecast in pathological roles, contrasts Prison Break with Grimm’s flexibility, shares his most difficult scene (a loosely directed “boat” sequence), and discusses how directors can better communicate story beats. The conversation also covers differences in power and responsibility as guest star, recurring, or series regular, and how Prison Break leaned into unexpected character value to deepen humanity and strengthen the central narrative.

S1E3: "Cell Test" | Director Brad Turner on Prison Break's Pacing | Balancing Thrills & Character Feb 07, 2024
    Show notes

Sarah & Paul welcome their first guest, episode director and Peabody Award winner, Brad Turner.

Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein discuss the brutal early Prison Break episode “Cell Test” and welcome their first guest, director Brad Turner, who explains how he helped establish the show’s pace and visual style immediately after the pilot under tighter TV schedules and budgets. Turner describes shooting largely on practical prison locations because sets weren’t ready, the challenges of filming in cramped cells without movable walls, and a memorable incident where the crew was locked inside Joliet during a statewide prison lockdown. He talks about bringing a 24-inspired sensibility to tension and pacing, the importance of treating the prison as a major character, and his approach to collaborating respectfully with actors as custodians of their characters while managing story turns. They highlight the value of quieter, character-driven moments like Lincoln and LJ’s visitation scene and discuss Turner returning years later to direct season-four finales, noting the cast’s professionalism and continuity.

S1E2: "Allen" | How T-Bag's Name Made It Through Network Censors | Tattoo Storytelling | Joliet Jan 31, 2024
    Show notes

Sarah Wayne Callies and Paul Adelstein introduce their “Prison Breaking” rewatch podcast, trade name-origin stories, and explain how Paul’s character shifted from “Agent Kellerman” to using Paul’s real first name, noting a possible historical nod in the surname. They discuss confusion around the show’s episode numbering and identify Episode 101, “Allen,” written by Paul Scheuring and directed by Michael Watkins, then summarize its dense plot (an impending race riot, Michael’s struggle to retrieve a crucial screw, and Veronica receiving a tape implicating Lincoln) and its strong 2005 ratings and TV competition. In their rewatch highlights and breakdown, they analyze the tattoo-as-blueprint storytelling device, the escalating obstacles, and the shocking toe-cutting ending, plus behind-the-scenes production chaos, heavy rewrites, and the challenge of shooting Chicago/Joliet prison locations across extreme weather. They also cover moving to Chicago, filming in Millennium Park, memorable cast/crew anecdotes (including Sarah’s persistent black-eye discoloration origin), and Teabag’s introduction, popularity, and how his name made it onto network.
