    TREK IT OUT

    by Shane Hoover

Wil Wheaton Talks "The Ready Room"

Wil Wheaton has traveled a long way from his days on Star Trek The Next Generation. He has become a successful writer, a sought-after audio book narrator, a podcast and web series host, and returned to television as himself in "The Big Bang Theory". And the release of Star Trek: Picard sees Wheaton finally return to TV screens for Star Trek. No, he's not appearing as a character in the series. Not yet, anyway! Instead, he's been tapped to host the aftershow, "The Ready Room". He sat down to chat recently on a number of topics with Wired.Com's podcast "The Geek's Guide to the Galaxy". Among those subjects was, of course, his place on "The Ready Room". Asked what he thought makes an aftershow like this work, Wheaton offered, "What I'm trying to do is...be the person inside the room for all of the nerds out in the audience. Because until I was in the room, I was a nerd out in the audience. (39:46)

He wanted to be bringing up the questions that he would have wanted asked as that "nerd".

On the subject of watching Star Trek at home, Wil says that his wife, Anne, was definitely not a Star Trek fan. Though he concedes "I imagine the experience of watching Next Generation with me is not the best experience, because I talk through the whole thing. Because everything triggers a memory." (45:42) . However, the couple have watched every episode of Star Trek Picard, and Wil was surprised to find that "She is crazy about it. She loves Picard in a way that I didn't think was possible!" (46:21)

That reaction from his wife has given Wheaton hope that Picard may bring together lots of other couples where one spouse is the "nerd" and the other is the "muggle", as he says.

You can catch "The Ready Room" every week on Facebook Live, following the release of new episodes of Star Trek: Picard.

Star Trek Warps in for the Super Bowl

This Sunday evening, 102 million viewers sat down to watch the U.S.S. Enterprise warp onto their televisions. Okay, okay, maybe that's not exactly why they sat down. But thanks to a typically big budget Super Bowl commercial from retailer Walmart, that's exactly what those 102 million viewers got to see. The one minute TV spot opens in orbit above Earth. With the distinctive new warp sound effect from Star Trek: Discovery, the show's new U.S.S. Enterprise appears on screen. From there, the commercial parades through a who's-who of Sci-Fi franchises - The Lego Movie, Flash Gordon, Men in Black, Bill and Ted, Mars Attacks, Arrival, Blade Runner, Marvin the Martian, and even Star Wars. In another shot, with the Enterprise hanging in the sky, two store employees laden with shopping bags are beamed out to deliver their goods.

And, in a follow-up bit of viral marketing, the company invited social media users to engage to see another short scene. In this one, a Walmart employee beams back to the store with a rapidly overflowing bag of tribbles, before pleading with people to adopt the tribbles.

Aside from being a bit of Trek related fun in the Super Bowl advertising, this must be considered a remarkably high profile splash for CBS's ever active promotions team. How many viewers in 102 million might have seen this and thought "Wow, that Enterprise looks amazing! I should watch the new show."?

Picard Breaks CBS All Access Streaming Records

According to a recent press release from ViacomCBS, Star Trek: Picard, along with the Grammy Awards live stream, drove CBS All Access to a new record for subscriber sign-ups in a single month. Not only that, but Picard's premiere set a new high water mark for the streaming service's record of total streams. The previous record was set back in 2017 by the series premiere of another Star Trek show, Star Trek: Discovery. Without sharing specific viewership data, CBS has announced that Picard drove subscriber volume up by over 115%, and reached more than 180% of the record set by Discovery. Speaking in the press release, Marc DeBevoise, President and CEO of CBS Interactive, said "We've seen tremendous continued growth in the service, and the new records we've experienced due to STAR TREK: PICARD, the GRAMMYs and a fantastic season of football are a phenomenal way to kick off what will be a fantastic year for CBS All Access."

On the back of the show's strong performance, CBS All Access has now released the first episode, "Remembrance" to view completely free on the streaming service's website or mobile application. If you haven't pulled the trigger on a subscription yet, this is your chance to get a glimpse of the show.

    TREK IT OUT

    by Shane Hoover

    Executive Shuffle at ViacomCBS

It's been a little less than two months since the formation of the new ViacomCBS, home to the Star Trek franchise. And now an article from The Hollywood Reporter gives us the rundown on a number of staffing shake-ups at the company. So far, one of the biggest impacts was felt in the CBS Ad Sales teams, which underwent a series of layoffs and promotions earlier this month. Also announced recently was the departure of Amy Doyle, who served as General Manager of MTV, VH1, CMT and Logo. Perhaps the highest profile change will be the arrival of George Cheeks, who leaves behind a co-chairman position at NBC Entertainment. Cheek's move comes as a bit of a surprise to many, given that he was promoted to the co-chair position only three months ago. It's speculated that Cheeks is arriving to be groomed as a replacement for CBS CEO Joe Ianniello. Ianniello was an ally of ousted CBS CEO Les Moonves, who fought Shari Redstone on the Viacom merger. When the merger was achieved, his position was placed beneath the authority of Viacom CEO Bob Bakish. So, the expectation is for Ianniello to head for the exit doors while Cheeks steps in as the head of the CBS house.

It's not unusual for corporate mergers to kick off a period of restructuring, so the changes aren't really surprising. And while we can't say what the shuffling at ViacomCBS will mean for Star Trek specifically, it certainly seems like the company has been putting its full weight behind the franchise with development and marketing efforts. With many Wall Street investment advisors listing ViacomCBS as a stock to watch for 2020, there's plenty of reason to be optimistic that Trek's future is secure.

A Personal Invitation to Picard Season 2

Sir Patrick Stewart has teased invitations of a Season Two guest spot throughout the course of several interviewers this past week. But if you're a viewer of ABC TV's "The View", you may have seen by far the most touching invitation. Appearing on the show to promote his new series, Sir Patrick briefly took control of the conversation to declare that he had a formal invitation. Stewart addressed host Whoopi Goldberg, saying "Alex Kurtzman, who is the senior Executive Producer of Star Trek: Picard, and all of his colleagues - of which I am one - want to invite you into the second season." The invitation was met with boisterous cheers from the studio audience and a joyful hug from Goldberg. Whoopi Goldberg, well known to Trekkies for her role as TNG's Guinan, was moved near to tears by the invitation. She told the studio that Star Trek was "One of the great experiences of my life", adding "I had the best time ever!"

    Picard Delta Popping Up

If you're a Trekkie in New York or Los Angeles, you had a special chance this past week to participate in the buzz of the show. A large stage emblazoned with the show's title and a huge Starfleet delta was set up in each city for fans to get photo ops. In New York, the pop-up appeared in Times Square, and in LA it appeared in The Grove. If you were a lucky fan in LA, you might even have bumped into one of the show's stars, Jonathan Del Arco, who continues his role as Hugh from TNG. The star posted a photo of himself and his dog at the Starfleet Delta, along with a caption of "I'm an actor but I'm also a fan... also Roxy was hoping to meet Number One."

There doesn't seem to be a published schedule for the installation, so keep an eye on the @StarTrekCBS Twitter account to catch the Starfleet Delta when it lands somewhere near you.

    Chateau Picard

Jean Luc wakes to the sound of songbirds and an enthusiastic greeting from Number One. Crossing the antique wood floors of the Chateau, he throws open the heavy curtains and gazes out across acres of wine grapes. The early morning sun sets a golden glow to the mists clinging to the hills of… Southern California's Santa Ynez Valley?? Yes, Captains, that's the truth behind the gorgeous filming of Star Trek Picard's Chateau Picard winery. In the show, the family winery nestles in beautiful La Barre, France. In reality, the LA based film crew looked a little closer to home. So we've learned from a recent article published in Wine Spectator magazine. The magazine spoke to the general manager of the Sunstone Winery, Dave Moser, who said that the production team were looking for a location that resembled a real French chateau. The winery was a great fit, with the property's villa built from architecture and pieces brought to the States from southern France. Naturally, the staff of the winery were bound to silence by Non-disclosure agreements until after the show was released. According to Moser, filming was achieved by overhead drones and a few shots of Picard and Data in the vineyard themselves. He described the cast and crew as humble, nice, and very accommodating. On the subject of expected interest from Trekkies, Moser said, "We encourage all the Trekkies and Trekkers to come visit us. It should be quite a few interesting weeks if not months."

    Star Trek Online: Legacy Launches

Star Trek Online's Tenth Anniversary celebration is here with a brand new two part episode. Team up with Seven of Nine 12 years after the events of Star Trek Picard and bring Michael Burnham along for a series of trials that will span the game's 10 year history. The action mostly takes place on or near the planet Excalbia, seen in the Original Series episode, "The Savage Curtain," but through the Excalbian matter reorganizing abilities you'll revisit several key moments in both Star Trek Online and Star Trek television. These episodes are a self proclaimed love letter to the past and future of Star Trek Online. We're going to take a dive into all of the content released for the 10th anniversary, so if you haven't had the chance to play along, you might have to save yourself from the spoil-pedos we're about to fire.

Finally, You Can Play as the Borg. Kinda.

Also launching along with the 10th Anniversary celebration, was the Borg Lock Box. Inside is a chance to acquire some of the more requested items since the game launched. The lock box includes all of the standard R&D packs and boosts, but each box also contains a Borg Datacore that contains some information about the Borg collective along with a non-combat holographic Borg drone to accompany you on your travels. There are new captain's traits for adapting your defenses and offenses in space and on the ground. Liberated Borg duty officers with interesting active duty abilities are also available. Borg technology kits frames and modules can give your captain all those fun Borg abilities we've seen in the television shows, and you can add to your arsenal with the Assimilated Plasma Weapons pack. Of course you'll be able to complete your Borg look by checking out the Lobi store for the Borg Exoskeletal Frame for Borg costume and the Biological and Technological Distinctiveness Extractor weapon. And the grand prize of the Borg Lock Box is none other than the Liberated Borg Command Juggernaut, similar to the Borg ship seen in The Next Generation episodes Decent Parts 1 & 2.

    Liberated Borg Command Juggernaut

This bad boy features a Commander Tactical/Command station and a Lt. Tactical/Miracle Worker Station. It also comes with the Universal Console, Disruptive Topological Matrix, which when activated deals plasma damage to nearby enemies and inflicts Viral Disruption for a short duration. This console also provides a boost to Plasma damage and Hull Regeneration. The starship trait is Enhanced Nanite Regeneration. If slotted, activating a captain or bridge officer heal ability on yourself will gain a significant boost to hull regeneration. The boost increases in value the more hull your ship is missing. The Borg Juggernaut comes with an innate ability, Plasma Disintegrator, which fires a massive plasma bolt at your target which explodes on contact dealing a devastating amount of plasma damage to everything nearby. Fun Fact: Any foe who comes into contact with this bolt or explosion will disintegrate when defeated instead of warp core breaching. For a full list of the lock box items and stats of the Borg ship, trek out the show notes.

    Tenth Anniversary Legendary Starship Bundles

It wouldn't be a proper Cryptic celebration without the need to talk yourself out of giving them more money. On February 13th, the 10th Anniversary Legendary Starship bundle will be available to purchase in the C-store on PC and then on March 3rd for console players.. Filled with some of the most sought after ships, this bundle includes new variations of the "hero" ships from the Star Trek universe. As of this recording only the Galaxy Class Legendary Command Exploration Cruiser and the Defiant Class Legendary Pilot Warship have been revealed, but rest assured that this pack will likely include many of the starships that have starred in our favorite Star Trek movies and tv shows across all of the multiverses. The Legendary Command Exploration Cruiser does come with the Enhanced Engineering Systems space set. Previously only available for Federation characters from the tier 4, 5, and 6 versions of the Exploration Cruiser. It also comes with the T6 cruiser ability and trait package along with a brand new account wide starship trait, "Make it so." The Legendary Pilot Warship comes with the Stealth Fighter space set, again previously available on the tier 4, 5, and 6 versions of the Defiant.

Again, this ship comes with the warship ability and trait package and comes with the "Overpowered and over-gunned account wide starship trait.

Both of these ships come with all available visual variants including the new USS Ross variant for the Galaxy and the "nose art" variant for the Defiant. The "nose art" version allows you to add preset graphics to the nose of the Defiant, similar to old WWII bombers or the famous Defiant development patch designed by United States Air Force Top Gun artist Johnny Hawk for Doug Drexler's DS9 Technical manual.

The closer we get to February 13th the more ships that will be revealed as part of this bundle. Now you're probably wondering how much it's going to set you back for this bundle. Well, hopefully you're sitting down, not driving, and no where near any sharp objects.

The standard bundle, which includes 10 tier 6 ships, over 20 ship costume variants, including a new exclusive variant for each ship, all of the consoles and traits from previous versions of the ship, brand new traits, and 10 ship slots, is priced at 30,000 zen, with an introductory sale price of 19,500 zen. There is a premium bundle available, which includes everything we just mentioned, plus 10 master keys, 10 infinity R&D packs, 10 Enhanced Universal Tech Upgrades, 10 Phoenix prize packs, 100 Lobi, 1 Epic Phoenix Pize token, 10,000 Dilithium, and the exclusive title, "Legend of the Quadrants," all for 45,000 zen, with an introductory price of 29,300 zen. If you're still conscious after that sticker shock, be sure to trek out the show notes for more details and to see the newly revealed ships.

    10 Year Infographic

Cryptic also released a fun infographic with some highlighted stats for the game. Of all accounts created, 41% are on PC, 33% are on Playstation 4, and 26% are on Xbox. There are 615 playable starships in the game. So far, close to 30 million tribbles have been bred. Captain Kurland "was here" over 62 million times, and Star Trek Online leeds episodic Star Trek with 183 playble episodes. That's 5 more than The Next Generation. The infographic also featured all of the Trek celebrities to voice characters in the game. All but a few voicing the same characters they played on television.

Free Starfleet Uniform from Star Trek: Picard

If you haven't already, be sure to claim your free 2399 Starfleet uniform in game. The uniform, as seen in Star Trek: Picard, is the latest on screen version of the iconic costume. Complete with matching combadge, this uniform will only be free for a limited time, to be sure to get yours from the promotions tab in the C-store.

    Show notes

This week on Priority One --- Well… it's much like last week… with even MORE marketing hype behind Star Trek: Picard. Star Trek Online's 10th Anniversary is right around the corner and what you can look forward to. And finally, we open hailing frequencies and receive all of your incoming messages. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Would you rather see Discovery Season 3 released first, or Lower Decks? AND CQ: What are you most looking forward to for Star Trek Online's 10th Anniversary? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Picard Final Marketing Push After what seemed like a lifetime of waiting and marketing teases… Or were we just mentally trapped in a Kataanian probe full of Picard marketing for 20 minutes? Hey, either way it's finally time! Star Trek Picard premiers on CBS: All Access this week. Whether you've already seen the series pilot or not, we've got a couple of fun stories from Picard's final marketing push. For starters, CBS arranged a two day takeover of London's Picadilly Circus Underground station. Star Trek branding adorned the tiled roundels in the station's ticket hall, declaring it to be "PICARDilly Circus". Signs and train line maps throughout the station carried the theme as well. If you closed your eyes, you could perhaps imagine yourself in a Federation transportation hub as the PA announced "Please take care when using stairs, escalators or transporters." Next stop - Earth Space Dock? Our next Picard marketing tidbit comes courtesy of a Variety interview with the cast and crew at the show's premiere event in Hollywood. When asked which Trek character each of them would most like to share drinks with, the answers were gracious, touching, and funny in turn. Sir Patrick Stewart joked, "Your question suggests that that hasn't happened yet." before adding "There are a lot of new characters with me now. And they are, without exception, delightful people. So a glass or two of something pleasant with any of them would be a treat." Rod Roddenberry touchingly replied, "My dad. I know that's not what you were asking, but that's who I'd most like to hang out with." While several other cast and crew all agreed that Picard himself was their man of choice, new star Isa Briones offered an amusing reply, "I shouldn't answer that because I'm not 21 for a few days! Hypothetically, Guinan, because she would get me drunk in the right way!" And our last Picard marketing bit comes courtesy of Sir Patrick's appearance on the BBC talk show The Graham Norton Show. The host asked Stewart if, given TNG's heavy syndication, he ever found himself unintentionally drawn into watching the show. While Sir Patrick declared that he doesn't seek out the show, he shared a funny story about one night staying in a hotel. While channel surfing, Stewart came across an episode of The Next Generation. After watching for a few minutes, he found himself hooked. It was at this point that his room service order was brought into the room, and the hotel staff person looked at him, looked at the television, and went away. Stewart told Norton, "I thought, he's going to go away and tell the entire kitchen "It's the saddest thing I've ever seen. This guy is upstairs, alone, having room service, watching himself on TV!" Discovery Season Three and Lower Decks Nearing Release? There's still no official word from CBS on the release schedule for the rest of its forthcoming Star Trek shows. However, a couple of Tweets were dropped this past week that give us hints that we may not have long to wait. First, back on January 14th, TrekCore.com's twitter account posted a very brief chat with Executive Producer Heather Kadin. Asked if Discovery's new season would be coming on the heels of Picard, Kadin had a surprising answer. She said, "It's not up to me. CBS All Access schedules it. I'll tell you that, come May, a lot of things will be ready. "Lower Decks" will be ready. "Discovery" Season 3 will be ready." She added her expectation that the shows would be scheduled to ensure a steady flow of content. She also declared, "I can't wait for people to see "Lower Decks"" Just a few days later, on the 17th, another tantalizing Tweet appeared. Michelle Paradise, Discovery Season 3's writer, tweeted a photo of one line of script boldly declaring "End of Season Three". So with the writing on the show complete, and the Picard Executive Producer expecting the shows to be ready by May, maybe we won't be waiting long after Picard's finale for the next show. 25th Anniversary of Voyager 25 years ago, Captain Janeway and the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager began their adventures in the Delta Quadrant. In honor of the special day, many of Voyager's cast members took to Twitter to celebrate. The Captain herself posted a short video captioned "Thought I'd dust off my uniform (pips, badge & boots) in celebration of the 25th anniversary." In the video, to the stirring tune of Voyager's theme music, Kate Mulgrew has arranged her Starfleet uniform and a Voyager script atop a Voyager folding director's chair. Robert Picardo, who played The Doctor, shared a photo of his character in costume as the Emergency Command Hologram with the caption, "The ECH has issued an order: you'd better be celebrating 25 years of Voyager! Please don't tell Kate Mulgrew I'm sitting in her chair again." Seven of Nine's Jeri Ryan, now working on Star Trek Picard, posted a full cast photo captioned "Happy 25th Birthday, Star Trek Voyager! To the journey…" And eternal Ensign Harry Kim, Garret Wang, posted two cast photos with a note saying "So, it was exactly 25 years ago, this evening, that Voyager first aired on UPN. Happy 25th Anniversary to the cast, crew and fans of Star Trek Voyager May we all live long and prosper!" Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Anthony Cox Omega Event Returns for Anniversary X To many of us, Star Trek Online is the ultimate Trekkie experience. Being able to graduate from Starfleet Academy, rise through the ranks at Starfleet, and Captain our very own starship as we warp throughout the 50 plus years of the Star Trek Universe. This year alone we will see Voyager celebrate its 25th anniversary, we'll see Captain Jean-Luc Picard takes to stars again, we will again have more than one Star Trek show to look forward to, and the game that has glued all our favorite stories together will turn 10 years old. For PC players beginning this Tuesday, January 28th, Star Trek Online beams down the party patrol, hands out the party poppers, and releases the Omega Particles. There will be two new crafting options for the Omega particles this year, you will now be able to craft mark OR rarity variations of the Omega upgrades. The party pooper this year will feature the greatest hits of past poppers. The anniversary pack is adding several new emotes including a Disco Dance, Tea - Earl Grey, Evil Plans, Organian Greetings, and Ta-dah! And of course you'll be able to earn yourself a shiny new Tier 6 ship, The Khitomer Alliance Battlecruiser. Klingon/Federation Hybrid Ship for the 10th Anniversary An amalgamation of design aesthetics from both the Klingon Defence Force and Starfleet, this formidable ship comes with the Aligned Antiproton Shielding Universal Console. Which when activated gives a temporary boost to Energy Weapon Haste, Shield Regeneration, and Shield Capacity that increases the more damage your shields take. Re-activating the ability afterwards will deal antiproton damage to each nearby enemy. Reaching level 5 in the Alliance Battlecruiser will unlock the Automated Shield Alignment Starship Trait. Slotting this trait will give a bonus to damage based on what percentage of your shields is missing. Defeating an enemy will restore a substantial portion of your shields. New Task Force Operation Launching with 10th Anniversary The task force operation, To Hell with Honor, was announced last week and featured on a recent Ten Forward Weekly live stream. The TFO has Captains taking the fight to J'Ula in a space versus ground forces battle on a barren moon. As John Hegner noted during the live stream, there are a couple of different strategies players can take when approaching the TFO. Stage one pits Captains against ground turrets while they make their way to J'Ula's headquarters. During stage two, Captains will battle against both J'Ula's forces and Elachi ground walkers. Any turrets not destroyed during stage one will help you fight the Elachi. There is a stage three, but not wanting to spoil anything, we'll let listeners discover that for themselves. Two Previous TFOs Return with 10th Anniversary Update The 10th Anniversary update will also bring us two previous TFOs into regular rotation. Battle at the Binary Stars and the Mycelial Realm return to join the permanent list of regularly available TFOs. In Battle at the Binary Stars you'll take on the role of a Discovery era starship involved with the famous battle we first saw in the premiere episode of Star Trek Discovery. WEEKLY TOP TIP With the Voth Breach arriving on Console as the featured TFO, we want to give you a couple of tips for completing it hastily. The first stage of the TFO is pretty straight forward, literally. You and your teammates fly at full impulse down the outside spine of the ship firing all around. Very much like the Death Star trench run in Star Wars. Occasionally you'll slow down to take out some turrets and then in the featured version you'll head straight down into the belly of the ship to take on the Subpower Cores. Here's where the first tip comes in. Only one of the three chambers will have the correct subpower core. The other two will have a question mark in the name. Don't attack these ones, heal yourself up and go to another chamber. Remember that a chamber will not have the correct subpower core twice in a row. After your team explodes the Subpower Core, head into the next chamber and start taking down the primary power core. This one has a rotating shield. You can either fly around the core keeping your ship broadsiding the exposed space between the shielding, or sit tight and buff up your ship when the shield blocks your firing arcs. It's up to you. But make sure you get your pacing down or you'll be wasting your buffed attacked on an immune shield. The Picard News Cycle Hits Warp 10

We're in the final week of waiting for Star Trek: Picard's January 23rd premier on CBS: All Access. If we thought that the hype was hitting high warp in the last couple of weeks, then I guess it has officially hit Warp 13 at this point. Because Picard news seems to be everywhere at once now.

For starters comes the news that the new Picard series, which hasn't streamed a single episode yet, has officially been renewed by CBS for a second season. ViacomCBS Executive Vice President, Julie McNamara, cited the magnitude of excitement for the show's premiere as a driving reason for the renewal.

Also announced this week, Picard's sister show "Star Trek: Discovery" has more quietly been green-lit for a fourth season. This too, before an episode of Season 3 has been released.

Sir Patrick Stewart Talks to NPR

The obvious place to start would be with the Captain himself. Sir Patrick Stewart sat down last week for a chat with NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday program. As he has stated before, Stewart was initially not considering a return to the role of Jean Luc Picard, but he's now added some details to his thoughts on the matter. The political climate in the U.K. and the United States left Stewart feeling that the real world had become too distanced from Star Trek's Federation ideal. He specifically mentioned his disappointment, embarrassment, and even anger at the U.K.'s decision to leave the European Union, saying "The European Union always made me feel, well, we are heading towards our own Federation of Planets somewhere down the line, that will come about."

But, while sitting down with the show's producers, Picard was introduced to their vision for a Federation that's very different from the one Jean Luc was last seen defending. This Federation has leaned toward isolationism, and Picard has distanced himself. The discussion was enough to change Stewart's mind and intensely spark his interest.

Stewart also let drop a mention that during or after the Romulan refugee crisis, Picard made some "errors of judgement; mistakes."

Speaking to what the character still has to offer viewers today, Sir Patrick highlighted the Captain's modesty, patience, and passion for humankind. He points out, "One of the great things about Jean Luc was he was a great listener and would only speak when he felt everyone had expressed what they believed. The crew of the Enterprise came to know that they were at liberty to speak the truth about what they believed and what they thought."

Stewart believes more people, particularly leaders, could stand to speak up about what they truly and passionately believe.

Kurtzman and Kadin Speak to TrekCore.com

From Sir Patrick Stewart, we shift our attention to Star Trek's franchise head, Alex Kurtzman. At a press tour in Pasadena, California, Kurtzman and producing partner Heather Kadin answered questions from Trek news website TrekCore.com. Asked about the lessons learned from the inaugural seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, he spoke about the importance of hearing the reactions and feedback of fans. "Before we lock things down it's terribly important to listen to fans, and hear what they like — and what they didn't respond to — or what wasn't clear. To make sure we're tacking accordingly. I learned when I started working in the 'Star Trek' world that that's a really essential part of making these shows.", said Kurtzman.

Speaking to the state of the Star Trek universe as a whole, Heather Kadin mentioned the ongoing development of the Section 31 show, and the animated Lower Decks and Nickelodeon projects. The key question , she says "Is this [show] a unique space we haven't explored yet?", and she hopes they continue to find those new avenues.

Kurtzman offered up an intriguing new bit of news next, declaring that there are two more live action shows in the works that haven't even been announced. With Discovery viewer reaction hugely vocal, it can probably be assumed that one of those shows will be a show centered around Pike and Spock's Enterprise. We'll just have to speculate what the other unannounced show might be.

    Jeri Ryan Interviews with IGN

The next in this week's series of Picard interviews is coverage of Jeri Ryan's chat with IGN. Speaking about where the new series finds Voyager's Seven of Nine, Ryan explains that Seven has seen a lot of "dark crap" in the last 20 years. The universe is a mess, she says, and Seven holds Starfleet and the Federation largely responsible. As the story opens, Seven is working with a group of freedom fighters called the Fenris Rangers. Ryan says the group is trying to keep a semblance of order in the galaxy's mess. Her path crosses with that of Jean Luc Picard, and Ryan says, "This is the first time that Seven and Picard actually meet. They know each other by reputation. And ... Seven's not on the 'Oh, he's a god' bandwagon I think, initially, when she meets him".

Ryan's character was brought into the story because of Picard's fundamental relationship with the Borg. Alex Kurtzman has said that Seven of Nine organically grew into the story through her shared experiences as someone who had also been assimilated. The opportunity to explore that element of their lives, and what it means to them, presented compelling questions for the show.

Marina Sirtis Speaks on Troi's Return

As part of a Picard panel for the Television Critics Association, Marina Sirtis had the opportunity to address her return to the screen as The Next Generation's Deana Troi. The actress admits that TNG fans eager to find out all about the state of their favorite characters in Picard may be left short. She says viewers can expect to find out a little bit about Troi and Riker, but not everything.

Sirtis also shared a humorous anecdote about joining the show. It seems that when she spoke to the wardrobe department of Picard, they were unaware that Sirtis wore a wig and black contact lenses for her TNG costume. Luckily, the actress could bail them out. She says, "I was like, 'Do you know what? I think I stole them so I think I have them. So let's just get the contact lenses cleaned because they've been sitting in a lens case for 15 years, and I have the wig."

Speaking generally about her return, Sirtis recalled comments made by Carrie Fisher on her return to Star Wars. She quoted Carrie saying "I'm a 60-year-old actress in Hollywood. People aren't exactly throwing scripts at me", which is kind of the place I'm in."

With the humor Sirtis regularly displays at Trek conventions, she also pointed out her least favorite aspect of joining Picard - filming in HD - saying, "Really, the man who invented high definition cameras, and it was a man because a woman would never have invented it, right? May he rot in Hell for all eternity."

Noah Hawley Speaks About His Trek Movie

Picard isn't the only Star Trek in the news this week, though! Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley spoke to Deadline this week about his upcoming Star Trek feature film. Interestingly, Hawley says it's not decided if his film will carry on with the cast of the recent Star Trek films by Bad Robot. The project also might not be connected to the ongoing Trek universe of Alex Kurtzman and CBS. The filmmaker says, "I have my own take on Star Trek, and going back to what I loved about The Next Generation. When a lot of franchises focus on 'might makes right', Star Trek is about exploration and humanity at its best, and diversity and creative problem solving."

He specifically called out the moment in Wrath of Khan when Captain Kirk stalls for time as they remotely lower the Reliant's shields. Those are the elements of Trek that he wants to reach.

Hawley says he still needs to write the script, and wants to be respectful to the underlying material.

Star Trek Online 10th Anniversary Begins with Cryptic Message

With the 10th Anniversary of Star Trek Online right around the corner, many of us have been waiting for an announcement regarding the milestone event. Well, in a tweet dated January 14th, Star Trek Online shared a 10 Years of STO wallpaper featuring the Enterprise F and the Bortasqu Klingon Cruiser with a strange block of inserted text that read, "Hear me?" Even more mysterious was if you followed the link to the wallpaper and then clicked the wallpaper itself, you were taken to a completely different image. This one indicates a coded transmission and the saucer section of the Enterprise F with a series of characters where the registry number should have been. After being decoded through the ACII85 coding language, it translated to a phone number. Calling the phone number played a recording of the original series intro with a series of numbers spoken throughout. One of our own Patreon supporters, SFC, helped in linking the numbers to a hidden Cryptic blog post. This one contains a video that three more transmissions were coming and an audio recording of someone who seems to be given a recording device to make audio logs about their experiences. As of recording this episode it's not known who the voice belongs to or what they are experiencing. Trek out the show notes for links to the tweet and decoded audio transmission.

STO Hypes up Picard with a New(?) Bundle

In anticipation of Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek Online has announced a new Picard Bundle. And we use the term "new" loosely. The bundle is now available and includes all uniforms and variations from The Next Generation, including the All Good Things uniform from the series finale. It also includes the Privateer uniform Picard wears in the episodes Gambit parts one and two. The replica Thompson submachine gun is the only weapon in the bundle. However the bundle does include three starships, a Tier three Constellation class cruiser, complete with an updated visual skin, a tier five Galaxy exploration cruiser and upgrade token, and a Miradorn Raider. Which was previously only available from a lockbox. The Picard Bundle will set you back 12,000 zen, that is unless you purchase it between now and January 20th when it will be on sale for only 6,000 zen.

Star Trek Online Updates In Memoriam

As many Star Trek Online players noticed a few weeks ago the in memoriam plaques on Earth Space Dock, the Klingon First City, and New Romulus Command. If you haven't already we encourage you to take the time to visit these new installations, which are now columns lit-up in faction colors. Each one has a rotating list of names belonging to major contributors of the Star Trek franchise. Most recently adding Rene Auberjonois and Aaron Eisenberg. And if you're missing those two specific Star Trek performers, be sure to stop by Quark's Bar the next time you're on Deep Space Nine. Both Odo and Captain Nog are now sharing a conversation at the far end of the bar for players to join in on.

    Patch Notables

The patch notes for PC had a few interesting things we wanted to mention. The devs have added item filtering and searching in all inventory windows. This includes personal inventory, bank inventory, account bank, etc. There are two new material types for the Guardian Cruiser. 8 and 8B, along with two new window types, five and six. They've resolved an issue with the Winter Event buyout not properly processing. And finally Ground Borg enemies will adapt slower to weapons that have a lot of tics per firing cycle.

Short Treks Trailer and Ties to Picard

Several weeks before the premiere of Star Trek: Picard, in fact a day before this podcast is even published, CBS: All Access will have released the next Short Trek. This Short Trek is titled "Children of Mars", and it promises tantalizing connections to the upcoming Picard series. On January 2nd, CBS released a teaser trailer for the new short. In the teaser, we are introduced to 12 year-old classmates Kima and Lil. The two girls attend a Federation school together, and we see several scenes of the pair picking on each other at school. As they both seem to be facing punishment for their misbehavior, the school is shocked by an emergency alert. A Vulcan faculty member with a worried expression watches something speed past overhead, and we see the frightened girls hold hands.

Now, there's a bit to unpack in this 30 second teaser. The first little easter egg that pops up is the arrival of the School Shuttle on screen. The 24th century school bus is none other than a very worn-looking Star Trek: Discovery era shuttlecraft. There's little chance this has any meaning for Picard, but it's a cute bit of ship recycling and a nod to the other show.

But the more interesting clues in the trailer are the ones that we can tie directly to the new Picard series. To begin with, there's the title of the short, "Children of Mars". Additionally, there's a fleeting moment in this trailer where a news program is visible on a large wall display behind the alarmed Vulcan teacher. As the Vulcan turns his head, a ship can be seen dashing across the screen. If you've been caught up on all of the Star Trek Picard teaser videos to date, there's no mistaking that ship silhouette.

It is the same ship seen in several of the recent Picard trailers. These ships are seen approaching Mars in numbers. They're seen firing weapons over a city while buildings erupt in balls of fire, as Picard's voice declares "We face a powerful enemy." They're seen speeding past an exploding space station. Picard, either in flashback or real-time, is gripped by shock inside a starship lounge as Mars blooms with explosions outside the windows. It might seem like these ships are the attackers, but another Picard trailer throws a twist into the mix. Those ships we've seen in so much action are clearly marked with a large Starfleet insignia.

So the identity of Picard's "powerful enemy" seems to remain a mystery for now. Is it the Borg? Is it a Romulan faction? Is it a new alien species? It looks very much as if this week's Short Trek might finally give viewers an up close view of this mysterious enemy as they rain destruction on Mars. Whatever answers the Short Trek provides, you can bet we'll be discussing it soon in an On Screen segment!

    The Space Force and SPOC

While it seems unlikely to ever become what we know as Starfleet, the United States Space Force is now officially a reality. The sixth branch of U.S. armed services was established by December 20th's National Defense Authorization Act. And it seems that those in charge have a sense of humor, and just might be Trekkies! Because, according to a U.S. Air Force public affairs article, all of the 14th Air Force's personnel have been officially reassigned to a new unit called Space Operations Command. Yes, that's SPOC for short. According to the article, the SPOC provides space capabilities such as space electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warning, nuclear detonation detection, and lots of others to the US Space Force and other armed services. No word yet on whether this will be followed by a KIRK or SCOTTY division.

    Janeway Monument Reaches Fundraising Goals

This year will mark the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: Voyager, and a group of citizens in Bloomington, Indiana has achieved their hopes of celebrating the anniversary in a special way. Having met their crowdfunding goal of $12,500, the Captain Janeway Bloomington Collective group will commission a monument to Voyager's fearless captain, Kathryn Janeway.

Speaking about the achievement, co-leader of the effort, Peter Kaczmarcyk (KAZ - mar-sik), said "Since we announced we hit our goal, people just seem amazed that we pulled this off. We're not the first people who had this idea, but we're the first ones who really carried it through."

So, on May 23rd, shortly after the future birthday of Captain Janeway, a bust of the Starfleet captain will be installed to downtown Bloomington. Along with it, there will be a Starfleet delta-shaped limestone base and an informational table about the Captain. The Collective had originally planned to have the monument installed on May 20th, Janeway's birthday. But the overwhelming number of people wishing to attend caused them to reschedule for the following weekend. The community will also celebrate the event with other events all week, like a "Science of Star Trek" event at the local science museum. The group has contacted CBS to help convince Kate Mulgrew to attend the event in honor of her famous role, but no promises have been forthcoming. To find out more about the event, follow the link in our show notes.

    Ocasio-Cortez Gets a Dog

Our last story is a little bit silly, and a little bit fun. It certainly seems like Star Trek has stepped into the light in the halls of Washington, D.C. Last year, Trekkies were abuzz about Senator Cory Booker's declaration of love for Star Trek at San Diego Comic Con. And this week another elected representative in Washington has teased her own Trekkie inclinations. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted to Instagram to happily reveal that she has adopted a puppy, declaring that she's /QUOTE/ thinking something Star Trek related or Bronx/Queens/NYC/social good related. /ENDQUOTE/ for the new pup's name.

While it's really just a heartwarming little bit of news fluff, it does bring to mind a couple of interesting questions. From a cynic's perspective, does the Star Trek name dropping on Capitol Hill now just imply that Trekkies have become an important voting bloc? Are candidates actually wooing Star Trek voters, now? Or, more earnestly, what does it mean that the representatives in Washington are Trekkies just like us?

Tribbles and Bits - new ongoing weekly event - we want to hear from you - so each week, we are going to ask a random question about Star Trek and about STO and we want your responses. Link posted on the website.
    WEEKLY TOP TIP

The Borg Resurgence event brings us a set of new unique ground weapons. While there's three different versions depending on your ground build flavor, they each have a special third attack that replaces the melee attack and cycles the weapon through all of the different energy weapon types. Now it's possible that this may not be the weapon for you. Or at least not something your captain plans on keeping equipped. But we do want to mention one good reason to grind out the daily progress to acquire these unique weapons. Often times we get presented with a personal endeavour to complete that requires a specific ground energy weapon type. If you're like me, I like to stick as close to canon immersion as possible. So my Feds have phasers, Klingons and Romulans carry disruptors, you get the idea. So completing a Tetryon endeavour can be a bit bothersome. Well, with this jack-of-all-energy types I can just cycle to the type I need for the endeavour and finish it right up! So go out there and get the new shiny. It may just come in handy sooner than you think.

    Show notes

Community. As 2019 comes to an end and I look back at the 50+ episodes and videos we've published this year, I think heavily on a sense of community. You see, Priority One Podcast is nothing without it. For nearly 9 years now, this podcast has been produced by its community. A community of talented, passionate, and dedicated volunteers who share a love for a franchise that has lasted for over 50 years. Each member of this team is an artist that donate their time and talents so that we can continue to be a small part of the Star Trek Universe. You see, outside of this podcast I consider myself to be a professional singing-actor --- a theatrical artist who has spent years developing my craft so that I can earn a buck or two singing a song and doing a dance whenever the opportunity arises. I know – all too well – the value of my craft… and the craft that our writers, graphic artists, audio/video editors, and hosts contribute is no less valuable. And yet. Much like community theatre, the Priority One Podcast team comes together to produce this show not because we want something in return… but, because this is our labor of love. I repeat this often on our show because I think it's important…. NO ONE on this team takes home a single dime… not from our generous patrons – not from our sponsors. The financial support we receive goes directly into the costs of producing the content you've come to expect each and every week… Equipment for mobile recording at conventions… livestreaming… editing software… some travel expenses… hosting services for the production… the list goes on. Because of the support of loyal patrons and the occasional sponsorship, we seldom dig into our own pockets in addition to the hours we spend each week producing this show.

    Picard News

The hype shuttle for Star Trek: Picard has definitely hit maximum warp, Captains. In fact, Picard is the number one most anticipated TV show of the coming year. At least according to metrics compiled and reported by the website IMDB. And if this week's news reported by Deadline is any indication, CBS is well aware of the hype. The new series doesn't even premiere until January 23rd, but Season Two has already been budgeted with over $20.4 million in tax incentives by the state of California. For reference sake, Deadline reports that Picard's $20 million incentive is "the most any small screen project has ever been awarded in the California Film Commission program since then Governor Jerry Brown officially expanded the credits to $330 million a year". So while the cast and crew have been cagey when asked about a potential Season Two, it's hard to argue with $20 million in tax appropriations.

Plenty of questions still hang over Season Two speculation, though. One big uncertainty for fans is the role that Season One showrunner Michael Chabon may occupy. On December 10th, Variety reported that the Pulitzer Prize winning author and his wife, producing partner Ayelet Waldman, inked a deal with ViacomCBS property Showtime to adapt his novel "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay". The pair will serve the new project as Executive Producers and joint-showrunners. Now surely, Chabon will remain creatively connected to Picard Season Two, but it seems likely these other commitments will see him step down as showrunner.

With lots to still speculate about, only one thing seems certain after the Season Two news.

My previous prediction that Star Trek: Picard would be a single season swansong for the great Captain… well just maybe I was wrong. Unless! What if they still send off Jean-Luc in the first season finale, and the show carries on the adventures of the rest of the cast aboard the U.S.S. Picard? It could happen.

    Trekantino On The Rocks?

While we're in the mood for speculation, let's revisit some news we shared last episode. If you recall, we discussed recent statements from new ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish, and among those was his confirmation that two new Star Trek films are currently in development. The obvious contenders at the time were the Kelvin Timeline's Star Trek 4 and the much discussed Quentin Tarantino Star Trek project. But comments made by Tarantino this week are casting doubt on whether his Star Trek project may proceed at all. The Oscar-winning writer/director sat down for an interview with ConsequenceOfSound.net as their Filmmaker of the Year. In the far reaching interview, Tarantino once again echoed his commitment to walk away from filmmaking after 10 films. And when questioned whether Star Trek represented that 10th film, he answered, "I think I'm steering away from Star Trek, but I haven't had an official conversation with those guys yet." He went on to add "But in a weird way, it actually kind of freed me up. I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one's going to be. I don't even have a clue."

    Paramount VR Deal

Paramount Pictures and VR platform service Bigscreen, Inc. have announced a new partnership. Under the new arrangement, Bigscreen's virtual theater platform will distribute classic Paramount movies in 10 countries around the world. Starting December 16th 2019, Bigscreen will show four new movies every week, with each movie run lasting one week. Showtimes will begin every 30 minutes as live pay-per-view events. Captains, you'll be happy to hear that the Kelvin Star Trek films are among the titles in the December lineup.

The virtual screenings will include 2D movies as well as select 3D movies rendered to create a unique 3D experience for Virtual Reality viewers. Besides just watching the films, Bigscreen offers users a virtual lobby with personal avatars and voice chat to add a social aspect to the experience. CEO and Founder of Bigscreen, Darshan Shankar, says "We are excited to enable fans around the world to chat and watch films together in our virtual movie theater."

Bigscreen's service supports the Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, HTC Vive, Valve Index, SteamVR, and Microsoft Mixed Reality. To find out more, and to see a list of upcoming films, Trek out the links in our show notes.

    TREK IT OUT

    Star Trek Command Training Program

It is hard to deny, at this point, that Star Trek programming has entered into a new Renaissance. With so many new shows currently in production, most every Trek fan can find something to be excited about. But, if you're an undergraduate or graduate student, this week's news from CBS may be the most exciting yet. CBS Television Studios and the Television Academy Foundation have announced the "Star Trek Command Training Program". The new program will provide internship placements on a Star Trek series for two lucky students per semester, starting in 2020. If you've ever dreamed of sitting in the writers' room, building bridge sets, or maybe being part of the Lower Decks animation team, then this could be your ticket into the crew.

Speaking about the program, Star Trek EP Alex Kurtzman said, "The Star Trek universe is an ideal place to celebrate new voices and perspectives. We want to provide the framework to begin entertainment careers in a meaningful way and can't wait to get started."

The application process will be handled by The Academy Foundation, while CBS Television will handle mentorship assignments and curriculum. Interested students should visit TelevisionAcademy.com/internships to apply. Applications are open through January 21, 2020 for eligible college students 18 and over.

    Colm Meaney Honored

Veteran Star Trek actor Colm Meaney was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award this past week at the annual Irish Post Awards. The Awards honor the accomplishments of Irish individuals in fields like business, entertainment, and sports. We, of course, are familiar with Meaney for his 225 Star Trek appearances. His career as Starfleet engineer Miles O'Brien is second only to Michael Dorn's Worf for Trek appearances. The versatile actor has also appeared in an impressive body of other TV and film projects, with IMDB listing 127 acting credits to his name. When interviewed after the Awards, Mr. Meaney himself mused, "I enjoyed Star Trek. I did it for seven years. Seven years in a space suit was enough, but it was very enjoyable. Star Trek fans still speak to me in the street. Sometimes it's like I'm two different actors with two different careers - the Star Trek career and the other career"

Speaking of the award itself, the actor said, "I feel very honoured. It was a bit of a surprise but a very welcome one."

    Official Star Trek Timeline

The official Star Trek website also published an interesting new video this week. The video is titled "A Timeline Through the Star Trek Universe, Part 1". Throughout the 2 minute, 5 second video, we're reminded of touchstone events in the Star Trek timeline. Beginning with the events of Voyager's "Death Wish" at 13.8 billion years ago, the chart carries right through the busy 23rd and 24th centuries, up to the destruction of Romulus in 2387. Each iteration of Star Trek on the big or small screen is represented, with special mention given to certain high profile events like the founding of the Federation, the Enterprise's 5 year mission, or the Dominion War. Perhaps most intriguingly, the video ends with the promise of "To Be Continued…"

    Star Trek 4

Speaking of adding to the canon timeline… Star Trek Kelvin 4 is gaining momentum --- FOR REAL THIS TIME. In an exclusive report by Deadline, Noah Hawley has been announced as its writer AND director. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, Hawley developed the X-Men Universe spinoff "Legion" and is the brains behind FX's Emmy-winning limited series Fargo…. Now, not much is else is known with respect to story or production timetables but, at least we know the production is -- officially -- in the works. But, what about all this Tarantino talk that we just can't avoid??... Well according to Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr //quote// The studio separately is working on a Star Trek spinoff that Quentin Tarantino is eyeing to direct and has been working on with Abrams. This one would likely carry an R rating, with a screenplay by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith.//end quote//

Dr. Robert Hurt visit the Star Trek Discovery VR Experience A Closer Look at the Earhart and Sech Strike Wing Escorts

This weekend a few of us in the Armada had a chance to try out the new Strike Wing Escorts and must say, I really enjoy them. Since I prefer to fly escorts, I rarely fly ships that have hangar pets - but I like the combination of a fast ship with some extra friends around to help out. Also, the console, Universal Gravimetric Disruptions - is an excellent addition to any control builds out there. It provides a slight boost to Energy Damage and Control Expertise - but also - it affects multiple enemies. So if you like grouping up your enemies and making them explode - highly recommended!

2019 Winter Wonderland Ship Reward Revealed

Once again we're getting a sneak peek at the next event. A new tab has appeared in the Event UI for the Winter Wonderland event. Including an image and details for the new Tier 6 Fek'Ihri Dreadnaught carrier. Featuring a Lt. Commander Science/Miracle Worker bridge officer station and coming with a whopping 5 tactical console slots, this fearsome sail barge comes with the universal console, Open the Maw of Gethor. When activated, and we're not making this up, the ship projects a flaming skull in front of the ship dealing fire damage to all nearby foes and launching Lost Souls of Grethor. This carrier comes with two hangar slots from which you can launch more Lost Souls of Grethor, each one using Claw Swipes and Flame Breath to damage enemies. After achieving level 5 ship mastery you will unlock "Fiery Entrance. When activating Narrow Sensor Bands or launching Hangar pets, your ship will, of course, emit a burning ring of fire dealing damage to nearby foes with a chance to confuse them. At the time of this recording, there has been no official blog post detailing the ship, however, as of right now you can log into the game and view the stats and details under the Winter Event tab.

    WEEKLY TOP TIP

Running patrols seems to be a fast and fun way to level up your event progress. It can be even faster when you're running the "Blockade" patrol. After you set up the beacon you'll need to defend three groups of Krenim ships from Vadwaur and Voth. Well, as the contact says, if you only destroy the Vaadwaur the Voth might leave. And that's exactly what happens. By focusing on taking out just the Vaadwaur ships you can cut your targets for the mission almost in half. As soon as the last Vaadwaur ship is destroyed in each group the Voth ships disappear. Just imagine how much time you'll save over the course this feature event. And if you want to run these patrols at a high difficulty level, this can make your runs a little smoother.

Other Gaming News Star Trek Fleet Command Mirror, Mirror Event

When playing through the Mirror, Mirror missions you'll also have the option to experience alternate endings. The choice is yours. Trek out the show notes for more details on the event.

Retro Gaming Star Trek The Next Generation for Game Boy

Earth date September 1993. Star Trek The Next Generation is heading into its seventh and final season. Star Trek Deep Space Nine premiered earlier in the year and now starts its second season. Star Trek's golden age was at its height on the small screen. Then there's the smallest screen. The Nintendo Game Boy. The OG black and yellow 160 pixel by 144 pixel 8-bit gaming brick of happiness. Star Trek TNG for both Game Boy and the NES also released during September of 1993. And boy or boy did this game have one little trekkie beaming with joy. Players take on the role of a Starfleet cadet being instructed by Jean-Luc Picard as they take command of the Enterprise-D and embark on a series of training missions. Everything from transporting an ambassador to rescuing a crew to engaging in combat with the Borg. As the acting captain you give commands through interacting with each bridge crew member by selecting their combadge. To complete shipboard tasks like establishing a standard orbit or diverting power to the shields, you play various mini-games. As you complete missions you rank up and will unlock passwords that can be used to pick up your progress where you left off. I played this exclusively on the Game Boy, but I've heard that the NES version is a little easier to play. The graphics are not the best for the time, and the gameplay can feel clunky and not very intuitive. But at a time when the only other mobile Star Trek video games had you flying the Enterprise through an asteroid field, this was the first game that you felt like you were in the Captain's chair.

So how can you play this game today? Well, you could of course download an emulator on your computer or phone. I actually have something called a Smartboy from Hyperkin. It's basically the lower half of a Game Boy with the the control buttons that you slide your USB-C phone into. You run an emulator on your phone, but you can actually plug a real cartridge into the back and play the game from the physical Game Boy cartridge on your phone screen. I love this because it feel like a Game Boy in my hands, but with a bright colorful screen. But the best option in my opinion is to purchase a Game Boy Advance SP. These are the first clamshell looking Nintendo handheld consoles, and the first with a backlit LCD screen. It plays both Game Boy Advance games
