RECAP: Brendan Banfield Trial - Day 4: The Commonwealth Rests Jan 20, 2026

The Commonwealth rested its case today in the Brendan Banfield tria.
Most of the day focused on blood spatter and blood transfer analysis, with a forensic expert explaining how different stains and patterns could support the prosecution’s theory that the scene was staged. Testimony covered cast-off patterns, including linear and curved linear stains, transfer stains, and areas of saturation — along with questions about what evidence was and was not tested.
The defense pressed hard on DNA testing gaps, and limitations of the analysis based on photos and body camera footage rather than physical evidence. The state’s final witness was Christine Banfield’s father, whose testimony was brief.
After the Commonwealth rested, the defense moved to dismiss the charges. The judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to proceed, and the defense case begins tomorrow.
The big question now: Will Brendan Banfield take the stand?

RECAP: Brendan Banfield Trial Day 3 - Crime Scene Photos, Survelience, and DNA Jan 16, 2026

Day three of the Brendan Banfield trial focused heavily on crime scene evidence, surveillance footage, and extensive DNA analysis. Jurors heard from multiple Fairfax County detectives, forensic specialists, and lab experts who walked through graphic crime scene photos, bloodstain patterns, and physical evidence recovered from the home.
Testimony detailed the discovery of weapons, blood-soaked items, and a backpack containing items linked to the crime scene. Surveillance footage from McDonald’s was introduced, establishing a timeline of Brendan Banfield’s movements and phone calls in the minutes leading up to the 911 calls.
The court also heard from firearms experts, fingerprint analysts, and forensic scientists who explained DNA testing on the knife, clothing, shoes, bedding, and other surfaces.
Several samples showed mixtures of DNA from Christine and Joe Ryan, while other samples were inconclusive due to lab limitations. Y-chromosome testing was also discussed to explain how male DNA was evaluated when mixed samples were present.
The state is nearing the end of its case, with only two witnesses remaining before it is expected to rest. Court will resume Tuesday following the holiday break.

Recapping 3 Big Hearings: Michael McKee, JP Miller, & Barry Morphew Jan 12, 2026

Three major hearings unfolded today, and this episode breaks down the key developments in each case.

First, Michael McKee made his initial court appearance following his arrest for the murders of Spencer and Monique Tepe. Prosecutors upgraded the charges to two counts of aggravated murder with premeditation, carrying the possibility of the death penalty. McKee waived extradition and will be returned to Ohio as the case moves forward.

Next, JP Miller appeared in federal court for his arraignment on cyberstalking and lying to investigators in connection with the death of his wife, Mica Miller. He pleaded not guilty, was released on bond with strict conditions, and investigators confirmed the case remains ongoing. The episode also explains coercive control, why it matters, and the renewed push for legislation to protect victims.
