Are Church Camps Harmful? | The Hidden Cost of "Cry Nights," Purity Culture, and Patriarchy Jul 06, 2025
    Show notes

In this episode of the Preacher Boys Podcast, host Eric Schwisinski sits down with Cara Meredith, author of Church Camp: Bad Skits, Cry Night, and How White Evangelicalism Betrayed a Generation. Together, they unpack the formative – and often fraught – world of evangelical church camps. Cara shares insights from her 30 years in camp ministry and her research, including interviews with dozens of former campers and staff across the U.S.

The conversation explores the nostalgia and positive aspects of camp, as well as the darker threads: pressured conversions, purity culture, patriarchy, and the marginalization of women, LGBTQ individuals, and people of color. Cara and Eric discuss how church camp acts as a microcosm of white evangelicalism, often pushing conformity and suppressing individuality under the guise of faith formation. They also reflect on leadership, intent, and the importance of elevating marginalized voices within church spaces.

Whether you have fond memories of camp or are re-examining its impact, this episode offers a nuanced look at the complexities, harms, and hopes for change in faith-based youth experiences.

On May 20th, 2025, Pastor Timothy Forgy—associate pastor and financial director at Liberty Baptist Church in North Carolina—died by suicide. For days, there was silence. No police reports. No media coverage. No public statements.

    I started asking questions.

What I uncovered is deeply disturbing.

In this episode of the Preacher Boys Podcast, I speak with Pastor Bob Gray II of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Longview, Texas—a church with a complex and controversial history. Through our conversation, I confirmed that an allegation of abuse involving a teenage girl surfaced on the very day of Forgy's death. What followed was a series of decisions that would change the trajectory of several lives.

This episode dives into a decades-old abuse allegation, the legacy of Longview Baptist Temple, and the culture of silence that has plagued the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement.

Did Candace Owens really try to paint Harvey Weinstein as the victim? In this episode of the Preacher Boys Podcast, host Eric Skwarczynski breaks down Owens’ controversial interview with Weinstein—and exposes how media figures like Joe Rogan continue to minimize and mock the stories of sexual assault survivors.

    We dig deep into:

    – Candace Owens’ take on the Weinstein case and #MeToo movement

    – Joe Rogan's disturbing reaction and resurfaced Joey Diaz clip about coercing female comics

    – Survivor testimonies from Weinstein's criminal trials—stories from Miriam "Mimi" Haleyi, Jessica Mann, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and more

    – Public accusations from stars like Salma Hayek, Ashley Judd, and Annabella Sciorra

    – The actual data on false sexual assault allegations (spoiler: they’re extremely rare)

    – How powerful men manipulate media narratives to silence victims and protect their status

Over 90 women have publicly accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. This isn’t “cancel culture.” It’s accountability.

📌 Trigger warning: This episode includes graphic details and direct quotes related to sexual violence, coercion, and abuse. Please take care while listening.
