The Genius of Ray Charles by Ray Charles Oct 28, 2020

Show notes

Ray Charles’s 1959 album showcases the famous singer and pianist giving his signature soul to sweeping big band arrangements and ballads with a string orchestra. It features Ray more in the setting of a typical pop singer of the time (see our episode on Frank Sinatra) than his typical rhythm and blues style.

Disintegration by The Cure Oct 14, 2020

Show notes

English rock band The Cure released Disintegration, their 8th studio album, in 1989. While much of the writing for the album was a result of Robert Smith's being uncomfortable with the group's popularity, coupled with his depression from growing older and the group being misunderstood, the album is certified 2x Platinum in the US and has sold 2.7 million copies worldwide.

Blackstar by David Bowie Sep 09, 2020

Show notes

The hauntingly beautiful last album by David Bowie, released 2 days before his death, Blackstar was nominated for 5 Grammys - and won every single one. This spacy, jazzy album shows that the singer from England was innovating and achieving unique sounds even during the failing health of his last days.
