With Teeth Part 2 Aug 03, 2018

Show notes

In this super-sized episode, we discuss the With Teeth era in all its lean and mean glory. We get to hear controversial statements and bold proclamations that make for our most heated discussion to date. Friendships will be tested, but all the love in the world is the only thing that keeps the boys from calling it quits on each other. We'll go track by track through With Teeth and talk about the coinciding releases around Nine Inch Nails' fourth LP.

This episode contains the second part of our discussion on With Teeth.

Things Could Have Been Still Deviated Jul 06, 2018

Show notes

In this episode, we finally close out The Fragile era with a discussion on Things Falling Apart, And All That Could Have Been, Still, and The Fragile: Deviations 1. We even have time to talk about the song "Deep," from the Tomb Raider soundtrack as well. The temptation to go track by track through the Tomb Raider soundtrack is compelling, but no one wants to hear Marc talk about U2. Eric, as always, has a lot to say about a remix album. Steve argues true fans of music prefer live albums because who doesn't enjoy bad acoustics and crowd noise, amirite?

Once more unto the breach, dear listeners, as we complete the masterclass in all things The Fragile.

BONUS EPISODE: Talkin' Fragile with Mike Spreigl Jul 04, 2018

Show notes

Hello True Believers. At this point we've taken just as long to release our episodes about the Fragile as it took Trent to do the same, so allow us to supplement you with a bonus episode with friend of the show Mike Spreigl. Steve called up Mike and they discuss Mike's history with the band, their love for the Fragile and it's various directions, the importance of a good wedding playlist, the beauty of Faith No More, How GREAT ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD IS, the physical ticket experience, the whimsical nature of TR, and much more. Mike has his own podcast (where this ep can also be downloaded) called Burning Bridges https://burningbridgeswithmikespreigl.simplecast.fm/ where a just turned 40 year old "muses about what has changed in his life as he has become older as well as revisits the things he loved as he grew up and discusses if those things still hold up today." So if you can't tell, he's our target audience. We hope you enjoy this bonus content.

See you soon for arguments about With Teeth! (but first one more episode on the Fragile Era...don't worry, that episode is done and waiting to be unleashed)

The Fragile: Right Jun 19, 2018

Show notes

The boys finish talking about Nine Inch Nails third album, The Fragile, by dissecting the Right Side of the record. We go track by track looking for the highs and lows of the record. Steve makes a bold proclamation that will get carried over into future episodes. Eric tries his best to say each track needs more brass and woodwinds. Marc fills out a paragraph on his last will and testament. It's a family affair, so join us as we delve into the void and scrape underneath it all in what only can be characterized as a big come down. We look forward to joining you, finally.

The Fragile : Left May 22, 2018

Show notes

The boys are back to talk exclusively about Nine Inch Nails and the first side of the magnum opus, The Fragile. Much like the album, this episode was recorded in various locations and times to capture the same process that Trent Reznor went through when recording this fine album. At least, that's what we told ourselves after the fact. Eric loves the big old brass, Steve goes off the reservation, and Marc tries to shoehorn a Carly Rae Jepsen joke in this episode that will go down as the definitive and all encompassing take on a true masterwork.

BONUS EPISODE: The Big Three Apr 28, 2018

Show notes

In what you might think is becoming a practical joke - we have a BONUS episode for you before the Fragile trilogy of episodes finally drops. Full disclosure - we recorded the first Fragile ep and much like Trent's first attempts in Big Sur to record the album, antics from outside our control conspired to delay it. Very meta. Because we will only release the BEST of quality for our dear listeners. We plan to finish the recordings Sunday the 29th - promise.

In the meantime we have this gem from the archives. Recorded via webX by Mix Master Eric, so not as clean as our typical in person sessions but still a fun talk. We took about 90 minutes to wax(trax) lovingly about what we consider the Big Three of Industrial Music - Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, and Ministry. Three bands we may have discovered if not for Trent, but for kids our age he certainly hastened up the process. Considering that the NIN break away from the industrial sound was the Fragile, we thought this might be a good place to drop this discussion into our discography. We go into the history of the bands, our history with the bands, best albums, and do not hesitate to call them out for when two of them went way off the deep end. But it's all from a place of love. A little Front Line Assembly chatter as well.

And boy howdy, A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste is still a classic. My goodness.

Thank you for your patience and you'll hear us talking about actual Nine Inch Nails again very soon.

Marilyn Manson Apr 13, 2018

Show notes

In this episode, Marc, Steve, and Eric conclude their discussion of Nothing Records with a deeper look at Marilyn Manson. We discuss the album Antichrist Superstar and go track by track looking for all the ways Marilyn Manson was trying to shock your parents and make you feel like you were rebelling against social norms and constructs. We look at how Trent Reznor sheparded the sound of Marilyn Manson's first two records and where the band went from there.

The 5 Year Gap: Quake/Lost Highway/Closure/Remixes Mar 04, 2018

Show notes

Marc, Steve, and Eric are joined by Joe Vierra to complete our discussion on the timeframe between the release of The Downward Spiral and The Fragile. We discuss Trent Reznor's work on the game soundtrack Quake, the soundtrack to David Lynch's Lost Highway, The Perfect Drug single and video, the tour and video collection of Closure, and all the remixes he produced for a variety of artists and bands. Eric and Marc manage to fight about instrumental music, Joe gives everyone a history lesson on Drum 'n Bass music from the mid-90's, and Steve moderates it all. Jump in as we wade through 5 years of Nine Inch Nails doing anything else besides releasing a full length album.
