Today we are bringing you a special show and are extremely grateful to New York Jets Defensive Tackle, Solomon Thomas for opening up and sharing his story with the world on how tragedy struck his family and using that loss to help others work through depression, anxiety and understand mental health affects us all, no matter how strong we are.

As the 2017, number 3 overall NFL draft pick, Solomon entered the league filled with positive expectations and a path of promise with the 49ers when a year later, his beautiful sister took her own life after struggling with depression, anxiety and PTSD. Solomon courageously and emotionally shares how his sister struggled with certain sides of her mental health and how her life ending tragedy became a painful lesson and teaching tool for his life’s purpose beyond playing football.

Dealing with the aftermath and fighting through guilt while overcoming the stigma that being a NFL player makes him tough or not allowed to feel certain emotions, Solomon created a foundation and dedicated a large part of his life to helping others and being an advocate for mental health in his sister’s memory.

Relying on his NFL family to keep him grounded and football still being his number one passion, Solomon formed a special bond and turned to Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott who shared a similar family tragedy as him, and used the strength Dak portrayed to help guide him on his purpose outside of the NFL. Dak showed Solomon that it’s ok to not be on certain days and helped inspire him to turn his loss into faith for others who may be helped by hearing his story.

Although this conversation is a tough one to have, it’s an important one filled with vulnerability and accountability in overcoming certain life obstacles while maintaining the strength to accept the emotions associated with struggle.

The 29-0 young fighter has managed to become a face of the sport and doesn't back down from big fights and seeks out opponents who will continue to challenge him and keep his name atop boxing's best. Ryan talks to him about mastering the strategy and sweet science of knowing when to be aggressive in the ring and when to out smart his opponent with defense. The guys ask Devin about overcoming adversity in the ring, with Haney honestly giving his assessment of how he bounced back from being hurt with a punch for the first time in his life in his 2021 battle against Jorge Linares.

With potential blockbuster fights in his future against fighters such as Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson, Ryan asks Devin what separates him from those fighters and his upcoming foe, Vasyl Lomachenko. Often criticized for not having knock out power, Devin fires back that those who say that about him are not in the ring with him and he knows his abilities and will continue to pursue the path of etching his name in boxing legacy long after he stops fighting.

With success, comes fame and Devin has experienced his life in the public eye and has altered his lifestyle to adapt to the constant changes of social media and paparazzi trailing his moves to create stories. Staying grounded is something his father instilled in him from a young age and being over cautious in his personal life and outside of boxing has helped him stay on a clean path.

Raised in Collins, Mississippi in a single mother household and with the help of his grandparents, DeMario lacked a consistent male role model and became a product of his environment early on in life. DeMario walks Ryan, Fred, and Channing through the three strikes that could’ve jeopardized his career and ultimately ended his life. From stealing in high school, being sent to an alternative school, and being jailed during his collegiate career, Demario was being tested at every stage. He credits his faith and God to the one relationship that transformed his life.

Ryan inquires about DeMario’s transition to the NFL and career trials and tribulations. DeMario talks about discovering that the key to consistent performance was not just his talent and work ethic but relying on his knees for faith every step of the way. After this discovery, he’s been training like a DB, a decision that has ultimately led him to being named a 2023 Pro-Bowler and sheds some light on what the future of the Saints looks like and his long term goals as he prepared for next year this off season.
