Photography Matters Ep 101 – Are the Masters Still Relevant?
Dec 16, 2022
Are the “Masters of Photography,” refering to the photographers of the 20th Century that are still celebrated today…. with all the changes in photography, is their work still relevant. Is it still important to “Study the Masters”? I think you probably already know how I feel about it. Food for thought. Enjoy.

There are many times when I will think to myself, “I believe I was born about 50 years too late.” Don’t get me wrong; it’s not that I don’t appreciate the times that I do live in and the things that exist today that weren’t even thought of back in the mid-twentieth century. But when it comes to music, photography, style, aesthetics and craftsmanship… man, there is something to be said for the way we used to do things. Photography Matters Ep 100 – Story Telling
Jun 12, 2021
Leica M6 • Summicron 50mm • Rollei Retro 400s
Story telling. It’s one of my favorite aspects of the humans. People love to hear stories. Some people are great at telling stories. In this episode I share my thoughts on how story telling integrates with photography.

Photography Matters Ep 99 – The Black & White of It…
Nov 25, 2020
Yulia • Kodak Tri-X EI 1600
For any of you who have known me for any amount of time, you’re very likely familiar with my obsession with black and white photography. If you ever wondered why it’s so one sided for me, I’ll let you know why 99 times out of 100, I’ll choose black and white over color.
INSPIRED – Episode 50 – The Extraordinary Ordinary
Nov 13, 2020
We’ve all seen work from photographers who can shoot the seemingly ordinary scenes or subjects. But while it is something so ordinary, there is something there; something that does make the photo work. There is something about the shot that gives the photo an extraordinary feel. How does that happen. I’ll talk about this today. Enjoy.
Las Vegas, Nevada is, in many ways, a very unique place. That’s actually kind of an understatement. But we’ll leave it at that for now. This is a 24 hour town. During the day it’s bright and bustling with life; people who have come to visit and play. But to me, Vegas is most interesting after the sun goes down. There’s a completely different vibe to the place. It’s darker; it’s sexier and there is definitely more of an element of mystery.…
Photography Matters Ep 98 – DNA & Are Your Photos Good Enough
Nov 11, 2020
Do you know, or are you, yourself, a photographer who doesn’t really want to study other photographer’s work? Some feel it could influence them too much? I’ve heard that kind of thing from time to time.
Also, since we’ve been talking about selling your prints or books lately, I’ve got a little bit more to say on that subject. I know, shocker, huh.
I know we all have our favorite cameras. I’ll talk about mine and reasons why they are my favorites. Also want to let you know about a reasonably new podcast out there. It’s called Create.Photography and its host is photographer, Daniel Sigg. I was recently on an episode with Daniel. Great guy. (good photographer, too!) I’ll share that episode with you (link in the post). Enjoy.

Oct 30, 2020
Are you one of those photographers who always carry a camera with you? I mean a proper camera, not your phone. (although the cameras on our phones are becoming freakishly good) I’ll share my 2 cents on the topic. Enjoy

Photography Matters Ep 96 – Should You Start a Podcast or YouTube Channel
Oct 27, 2020
I think I remember doing an episode on this topic before, but I was recently asked by another photographer if they should start a podcast or do a YouTube channel. I’ll give my 2 cents on the subject. Enjoy.

An idea had come to me today, and I think it might be a good one. An exercise that can help strengthen my storytelling muscle. Then I thought, why keep this to myself? Might as well share it with you and see if maybe this would sound interesting to you.

You know how sometimes people produce work that’s actually designed more to impress their peers rather than accomplish the primary goal. I think this happens in photography sometimes.

Photography Matters Ep 94 – Storytelling in Focal Lengths
Oct 13, 2020
Yuliya | Leica M262 • Summicron 50mm
One of my favorite thing in photography and something I will always work to get better at is storytelling. Focal lengths can be powerful tools that can help you tell your stories better. I’ll share my thoughts on what works best for me and why, and on different lengths so you can think about what works best for you. Enjoy.

Photography Matters Ep 93 – Passion & Obsession
Oct 06, 2020
Passion & Obsession – two of the most important tools in an artists bag. I’ll get asked, from time to time from other photographers something like, “What should I shoot so that I can stand out, build a following, do better on social media, etc…” Today’s conversation revolves around my standard answer to those questions.

Photography Matters Ep 92 – Mood • Feel • Story

Mood, Feel and Story. These are three words you’ll read on the homepage of my photography website. For me, these are the three most important elements of a photograph. I’ll talk about why and I’d be curious to hear from you, what are the most important elements that you look for in your photographs. Enjoy.

Photography Matters Ep 91 – The Blessing of Change

Photography Matters Ep 86 – ACROS II, Using Old Gear, Leica JPEGs
Feb 23, 2020
This week’s episode is kind of mixed bag. Have you shot any ACROS II yet? I ordered a couple rolls from Freestyle. Haven’t shot it yet, but have some thoughts on this i’ll share with you. Also the topic of how using gear that maybe you’ve kind of forgotten about can kind of make things interesting again. And a couple thoughts about Leica JPEG files. Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 85 – What Would You Make Your Photo Book About?
Jan 10, 2020
If you were to make a photo book (and I really hope you do), what would it be about?
In this episode I’ll talk more about things I’ve been doing with MagCloud and the books I’m working on. I’ll let you know some things I’ve learned along the way.
My hope is that if you aren’t printing books yet, this might inspire you to do so. It really is a lot of fun.
Photography Matters Ep 84 – Update on MagCloud, Lens Issues and Other Stuff
Dec 18, 2019
I hope everyone has been doing good and enjoying the holiday season. In this episode I want to catch you up on how things are going with using MagCloud for publishing my book.
Also, I’ve had some lens issues I’ve been dealing with lately. I’ll share my story on that and see if you guys have any input.
A few other things as well on this episode of Photography Matters. I hope you enjoy.

Photography Matters Ep 83 – Fujifilm ACROS II, Instagram & MagCloud
Nov 19, 2019
Well, good news – Fujifilm ACROS II has an official shipping date! This has been announced for a while now, but that’s okay. Anytime is a good time to talk about ACROS.
What do you guys and gals think about Instagram’s plan to remove the “Likes”? I’ll share my 2 cents.
Shooting something different. Last weekend I found myself shooting in one of the local state parks here in Vegas. It was definitely something different than the darker, moodier stuff I’m often focused on. Fun stuff, though.
I’m also putting together a small photo book using the services of MagCloud, another company owned by Blurb. I’ll share my experiences so far.
Enjoy.

Photography Matters Ep 82 – Meaningful Work (and other stuff)
Oct 22, 2019
I recently was involved in a project for a client that ended up being one of the most meaning peaces of work I’ve done in a long time. I’ll talk about that.
Also, took another day trip out with my friend, Garrett last week. More cool stuff. I’ll share my thoughts on why I really love the shots I got on this outing, over the shots I got from the last one. Enjoy

Photography Matters Ep 81 – The Power of Doing Something Different
Oct 15, 2019
Leica M6 • Summicron 35mm • Fujifilm ACROS EI 400
Many of us as photographers have certain genres where we tend to spend a lot of our time; certain subjects that we’re more passionate about shooting. That’s a good thing because the more we shoot those subjects we’re most passionate about, the more we refine our process and develop are skill set in that arena.
However, if all we ever shoot is that main focus of our photography, it does bring up the potential to start to become bored. Sometimes it might be a good idea to shoot something completely outside of your wheelhouse, really mix it up a bit. Enjoy.
The Photos
Here are a few shots I got from that outing. My favorite shots from the day were actually more of my friend Garrett, behind the scenes; maybe stuff he can use for something.
I shot a roll of 35mm film with my Leica M6 and a roll of 120 with the Mamiya RB67. Fun stuff.

Photography Matters Ep 80 – Fred Herzog
Oct 01, 2019
Fred Herzog • Modern Color
On September 9, we lost photographer, Fred Herzog. I’ve admired Fred’s work for sometime, but as I’m generally more obsessed with black and white photography I wasn’t necessarily looking at Mr. Herzog’s work as much as I should’ve been.
With his recent passing, I started seeing more of his work displayed in posts as a memorial to the great photographer. It’s beautiful work; wonderful use of color and story plays a strong role in each composition.
In this episode I just want to share my thoughts, as a predominently black and white shooter, on the beautiful color work from Fred Herzog.
Photography Matters Ep 79 – Improve Your Photography by Setting Goals
Sep 17, 2019
The Importance of Goals
Unless you’re a professional photographer with clients and paid assignments, it can be easy to leave the camera alone for long periods of time. You’re not pushed to keep shooting consistently and so maybe you don’t.
If this is you, don’t feel bad, you’ve got lots of good company.
But, one thing I feel is important in moving forward with your photography and to keep shooting and creating more consistently is by setting goals. I’ll talk about this in this weeks episode.
I also want to pay tribute to three important photographers that we’ve lost recently, in just a short amount of time.
Photography Matters Ep 78 – Can Other Creative Fields Fuel Your Photography?
Aug 06, 2019
I’ve loved beeing a creative person ever since I can remember. I think all kids start out that way. Some of us strive to continue to maintain that level of creativity in our lives.
I was thinking about it today and decided to put the question out there…. does being active in other creative fields fuel your photography… or do you feel like it stretches your creativity too thin? Enjoy
Photography Matters Ep 77 – Street Photography – What Does That Mean To You?
Jul 30, 2019
Fujifilm ACROS, EI 400 • Leica M6, Summicron 35mm
Street Photography – What Does it Mean For You?
Street Photography is a genre; a category of photography that when someone says, “Street Photography” I think we all kind of have an idea in our mind about what that term means.
However, the thing is that street photography has grown into a category that really has no rules, no boundaries, no clear meaning of what it actually is. It can be something completely different for each person who considers themselves a street photographer. Enjoy.
Man, does the summer weather affect your photography? I live in Vegas, where if I go outside during the day I feel like I’m climbing directly into a tanning bed. I’m not complaining, but this really does modify my enthusiasm to get out and shoot, particularly during the day. Enjoy
Minimalism is kind of a hot topic these days. Many people are working to live with a more minimal approach to life. I think this is worth looking at when it comes to photography as well. Enjoy.
The importance of Story in photography. I know this is not a new concept by any means. But it’s so important that I don’t think it can ever be talked about too much. Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 74 – Gear Lust vs Film Lust
Jun 25, 2019
Kodak Tri-X, EI 1600 • Leica M6, Summicron 50mm
I think if you’ve been involved with photography for any amount of time you’ll be familiar with the term G.A.S. – Gear Acquisition Syndrome. It’s an easy path to get on, and I’ve enjoyed the pursuit of gear myself. Luckily less these days, but it IS a real thing.
Lately I’ve found myself more involved in the concept of Film Lust, the pursuit and enjoyment of exploring different kinds of film; seeing the different looks; the different moods and feel you get; shooting with different emulsions. I’ve found that, just as Gear Lust is a thing, so is Film Lust. Enjoy.

William Eggleston – Not About the Wow Factor
Every once in a while I’ll revisit a particular documentary on YouTube about photographer, William Eggleston. It’s a good reminder for me, to not miss the photographs in life that, while not epic in nature, still contain so much story and interest. I think that’s important. Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 72 – Fujifilm ACROS II – I Didn’t See This Coming
Jun 11, 2019
New film from Fujifilm – Neopan ACROS 100 II
Fujifilm ACROS II – Coming fall of 2019
Fujifilm ACROS II… Wow, this was unexpected, at least I for one did not see this coming. I really felt that Fujifilm was really happy to be exiting the analog side of photography to keep its focus on the digital products; their X Series cameras and lenses.
I remember when Fujifilm announced the discontinuation of its large format versions of ACROS. After that, we all knew what was coming next. Yep, within a few months of that announcement, Fujifilm subsequently let us know that ACROS in 135 and 120 formats was being discontinued, fall of 2018.
Embracing the Change
For the past year I’ve been happy to experiment with different film stocks, because I just wanted to move on, not stay too emotionally attached to ACROS’ aesthetic. As a result, I’ve ended up choosing Kodak Tri-X as my go-to film. I know that seems like an odd choice. The look of Tri-X compared to the look of ACROS… well, to many that probably doesn’t make much sense.
But, it looks like I can continue to maintain my obsession for this beautiful film. Because, according to a post from EM on Emuslive.org Fujifilm ACROS II will be coming back sometime in the fall of 2019. How cool is that!?
ACROS vs ACROS II
I’ll keep enough stock of the original ACROS so that I can compare the old to the new. You should do that too. Keep a couple rolls of the original film and we can all compare our findings. That’ll be cool. Man, I am so happy about this!
The Photos – Fujifilm ACROS

INSPIRED – Episode 37 – Inspiration, Don’t Wait For It
May 27, 2019
Inspiration, don’t wait for it.Taken with the original Fujifilm X100 • 2011
For the creative mind, inspiration is pure gold. To have something that inspires you and lights up your creativity is priceless. Whether that something is a muse; a landscape; a street scene; or even just a concept… that inspiration really is priceless.
However, that source of inspiration might not might not always seem to be there. What do you do then? What do you do when you’re just not inspired. You can’t seem to find the motivation to pick up your camera?
You do it anyway. Most people don’t live in a constant flow of inspiration. But that shouldn’t stop us from constantly being creative. Inspiration, don’t wait for it.
A self-respecting artist must not fold his hands on the pretext that he is not in the mood.” – Tchaikovsky
INSPIRED – Episode 36 – Miles Davis and the Importance of Change
May 25, 2019
I was just listening to an interview with Miles Davis, an artist who continued to reinvent himself and his music, constantly, and it got me thinking about the importance of how change is crucial for growth, in any artistic field.
I used this photo of Jonny for this episode’s featured image because on this shoot we did a few things a little differently; pushed forward into new ground and I love the results. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the episode.
In order to experience growth in anything in life you have to branch out; try new things; try changing directions. Maybe even make a complete departure from the old into something completely different. In this episode I share my thoughts on this topic.
Hey, I did a new design for the website. I wanted to tweak it a bit; make everything more accessible as soon as you land on the site. Stop by and check it out if you get the chance. Let me know what you think.

Hey, I hope you all had a great weekend and a wonderful Mother’s Day.
I did manage to get out last week and head up to Cold Creek and see if I could find any wild Mustangs to photograph. I did, and I actually posted an article on the website a couple days ago about that. But, I figured I’d go ahead and talk a little more about it this evening.

Basketball Jones
Remember that old bit, Basketball Jones, from Cheech and Chong… from back in the ’70s. Noah and I talk about that a lot, because yes, Noah has a Basketball Jones.
Who are the people in your life that have a passion, maybe even an obsession that could make for a great photo story? Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 70 – Medium Format (film) Photography? Why Not?
Apr 30, 2019
Mamiya RB67 medium format camera • 127mm Sekor lens
Hey, this episode is kind of followup to an article I posted on the site recently. In the article I talk about how, IMHO every photographer should getting into medium format film photography. I figured it was worth talking about here on the podcast. Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 69 – Opportunities and Basketball
Apr 23, 2019
Hey, I hope you had a great week this past week. Pretty slammed on this end, just between work, shoots, product photography and the best part of it all…. Noah was back for spring break so we were able to spend some time on the court playing some ball and generally having a great time…
Okay, that was last week, tonight I just want to talk a bit about the current state of photography, particularly as a profession. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 33 – Spontaneity, Share Prints and Have a Great Weekend
Apr 12, 2019
Prints from my photo shoot with Jonny
Ever have one of those days in which, you really do have things you should probably tend to, but the weather is just that certain kind of beautiful; there’s a certain energy about the day, and yiou know it’s going to be impossible to keep yourself contained inside doing work. I think it’s important to respect those feelings and act on them as often as you possibly can.
Also I talk a little about how rewarding it is to share prints from a photo shoot, rather than just sending jpeg files. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 32 – Magnum Photographer, Dennis Stock
Apr 10, 2019
Book cover, James Dean | Fifty Years Ago | Dennis Stock
Dennis Stock was a photographer who took some of the most famous photographs that most of us have seen. I bet a lot of you already know about Dennis Stock and his work. But surprisingly, I’ve talked to many people, and some of them being photographers, who had no idea who he was.
So that’s why I want to talk about him today. Enjoy
Photography Matters Ep 68 – Personal Projects… 3A.M.
Apr 09, 2019
Conversation • 3A.M.
Happily, I seem to be (a little) better at sleeping through the night these days, so I’ve decided to wrap up my 3A.M. project. I had a lot of fun on those outings, but I admit it is nice getting a little more sleep these days. But I do kind of miss that time out on the streets during those late nights/early mornings.
I’ll talk a little about the project, share the zine and talk about a couple other things on my mind this morning. Enjoy.
In the last episode I talked about and posted photos from my photo shoot with Jonny; the shots that we got with ACROS…. then I porceeded to gush on about ACROS for most of that episode. (very warrented gushing, I might add)
I did mention that the other film I used on that shoot was Tri-X, kind of my new best friend in film these days. After coming down from my ACROS high, I started looking through the Tri-X film from the shoot. At first I thought I might be disappointed after looking at the ACROS shots. Nope. Tri-X held it’s own. Enjoy.
The Photos
All shots, Kodak Tri-X EI 1600, Developed in HC-110 (b) for 16 minutes, Leica M6 with my Summicron 35mm and 50mm lenses.
The Link
Here’s the link to Episode 30 that features the ACROS shots from this shoot.
I haven’t shot any ACROS in quite a while. That seems a little weird since for a couple years it was the only film that existed to me.
I did a photo shoot with Jonny this week. I shot most of it on Tri-X, but just for old time sake I through in a roll of ACROS to finish the shoot. Wow… Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 29 – 3AM with Saul
Mar 29, 2019
As I keep accepting the challenge of putting my insomnia to good use, this morning was no exception. Up at 3AM, I decided to thumb through some photo books. This morning’s selection was Saul Leiter’s, In My Room. Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 67 – The Shots Between the Shots, Inspiration, and Happy Birthday
Mar 26, 2019
Yuliya Shumilova
Remember the couple episodes I did a while back, talking about what I referred to as the “Anti-Pose?” Today I want to go a bit further and talk about even less posing… the shot between the shots.
Also, Inspiration; where do you find it? What inspires you?
And Happy Birthday to the show. Wow, it’s been a year since I started the podcast and just want to thank everyone for such a great year! Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 28 – Lunch Atop a Skyscraper, Having Unique Access
Mar 25, 2019
Lunch Atop a Skyscraper, 1932, Iron Workers on the construction of the RCA Building, Rockefeller Center, NYC – Bettman/Corbis
Man, one of the most iconic, well known photos in history is the shot taken back in September, 1932 of 11 Iron Workers sitting on an iron beam, 800ft over New York City. In this episode I want to share my thoughts about that image; share a documentary that was made about that photograph and that period of time in NYC, and a couple other things. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 27 – Good Stuff In The Mail and Have a Great Weekend!
Mar 22, 2019
Kind of a quick episode. Just wanted to catch up with you guys; let you know a couple things I got in the mail this week that I’m pretty happy about; and wish everyone a great weekend. Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 66 – Eastman Double-X and Black and White Movies
Mar 19, 2019
From the openings scene of Casino Royal, shot on Eastman Double-X
Eastman Double-X 35mm black and white film. Man, this is a very cool film with a very cool look. It’s one of Kodak’s motion picture film stocks but is also available from places like Film Photography Projects online store, as well as Cinistill to shoot in 35mm cameras.
I gotta say, even just after shooting two rolls of this film, I’m definitely looking forward to shooting much more.
Also, why aren’t people making more black and white movies anymore. What’s the deal with that!? Enjoy.
3AM – Downtown Las Vegas, Fremont Street shot on Eastman Double-X
We talk a lot these days about meaningful photography, work that matters; and yeah, while that is important to stay focused on (pun intended), there’s another aspect to photography that I find equally important. That’s the therapeutic affect photography can have for most of us. Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 65 – Believe In Your Photography
Mar 12, 2019
As a creative, especially when new to working as a professional photographer, many find it a little uncomfortable when it comes to the point of asking for the money or knowing what to charge. I want to talk a little bit about that in this episode. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 24 – Documenting Creativity
Mar 11, 2019
Noah – Just some shots from the series I mentioned during the episode.
I’m a big fan of documentaries; the behind the scenes stuff. Some of my favorite photos to see are those of people who have been photographed, or documented in someway while they were creating. Sometimes I’m actually more excited by seeing those photos than I am of the actual finished work. We all know people who are artists, or at least creative. I think that is such a wonderful subject for our photography. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 23 – Find the Shot
Mar 09, 2019
“Of course, I had not outlet to plug it into. I called an electrician, got it done, turned it on, and was delighted by the coils. It all seems so simple now.” – Jay Maisel, It’s Not About the F-Stop
I’ve got an excersise that I do from time to time in order to hopefully keep improving my photographic eye; to continue to help strengthen my photographic vision. I’ll share that with you in this episode along with another page from Jay Maisel’s book, It’s Not About The F Stop that kind of chimes in with the concept of my excersize. Also, I’ve got an update on the recent project I’ve been working on. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 22 – Landscape Photographer, Steve O’nions
Mar 06, 2019
Recently, in a coupe different episodes I kind of went on and on and on about the joy of using a Holga camera. Man, they are a lot of fun to use, and can give you pretty beautiful results. Last week a saw a video from Landscape Photographer, Steve O’nion. In this video Steve showed the beautiful landscapes you can get using this little Plastic Fantastic. I’ll talk about that and also tell you about a Lightroom plugin that allows you to post directly to your Instagram account, right out of Lightroom. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 21 – Everything Changes
Mar 05, 2019
I’m often drawn to photographing things from the past. To me, having something in the photography that’s from, say, the 1950s makes the photograph more interesting. Why, because although it may have been incredibly ordinary and common back in those days, it’s not ordinary or common anymore; and it does represent a little slice of history.
Think about the photographs you’re making today. Maybe some of them might seem a little ordinary today. But what will it be like when you look back on that photo in 10 – 20 years. It could give you a much different feeling.
One of my favorite aspects of photography is the long game; looking back on your photos from the past and see how you feel about something that you might not have given that much attention to back in the day. Enjoy.
I see so much of my own photography. It’s probably the photography I see the most of. Even when I’m searching out other photographers for inspiration, I’m often look for work that might be somewhat similar to my own. But, sometimes I find inspiration when I come across a photographer who’s style might be quite different from mine… but it does inspire me; it shakes things up a bit and gives me something different to think about. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 19 – Who Are You Making Photographs For?
Feb 27, 2019
I read a post on Blue Moon Camera and Machine’s website yesterday. It was an article by photographer, Katt Janson Merilo titled, Vivian Maier, Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Photography.
INSPIRED – Episode 18 – What if all you had was a Holga… for the rest of your life?
Feb 26, 2019
I’ve been talking about Holga toy cameras lately; talking about the work of artists like Igor Posner. A little while ago I had posed the question regarding what would you do if you really had very little money and had to start over again in photography; what would you start with. That topic has been dominating a lot of my thought process lately. Enjoy
INSPIRED – Episode 17 – Entering the World of Toy Cameras
Feb 22, 2019
Remember how I talked about how much I was moved by the look of some of the photos that Igor Posner took with a toy camera? Well, I couldn’t resist the urge to try one out. This week I ordered a Holga 120n from Freestyle; it arrived Tuesday and I took it out for a bit on Wednesday. I’ll share my inistial thoughts and a few of the photos. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 16 – Jamel Shabazz
Feb 21, 2019
In my opinion, Jamel Shabazz is one of the most important photographers in the genre of Street Photography still living today. And when I say “Street Photography” in regards to Jamal Shabazz, I mean it with the utmost respect. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 15 – Overplanning Kills Photography – Just Start
Feb 20, 2019
ACROS pushed to 400, Leica M6, Summicron 35mm
Sorry for such a dramatic title, but I think this is an important issue that keeps a lot of people from moving forward with their photography. Let me know what you think. Enjoy!
Photography Matters Ep 64 – More Rollei Talk
Feb 19, 2019
I’ve been shooting a lot of Rollei Retro 400s over the past few months now, and I just wanted to share my thoughts as I’ve had a chance to get a little bit more experience with . Enjoy.
All images shot with my M6, most with a Summicron 35, but a couple with a Summicron 50. Rollei Retro 400s, pushed to 1600. Dev Info: HC-100 (b), 68°F/20°C, 16 minutes.
INSPIRED – Episode 14 – Photographer, Igor Posner and the Beauty of Imperfection
Feb 18, 2019
I recently watched a video of photographer, Igor Posner giving a presentation at the School of Visual Arts, discussing the process of putting together his latest book, as well as sharing his general approach to photography.
Writer Mary Di Lucia also spoke at this presentation and I was really inspired both by Igor’s approach to photography, his photographs and also by the way these two collaborated to create the book, Past Perfect Continuous.
I wanted to share this with you on today’s episode and give my thoughts about it. I hope it inspires you as much as it inspired me. Enjoy.
INSPIRED – Episode 13 – Photography, The Passionate Approach – Jacob Aue Sobol
Feb 15, 2019
I’ve mentioned it from time to time that I love seeing people who are passionate about what they do. Jacob Aue Sobol is very passionate about his approach to photography. He takes a very emotional approach, seeing his photography as a way to connect with people. Strong images. Very inspiring photographer.
INSPIRED – Episode 12 – How Do You Come Up With a Personal Project?
Feb 14, 2019
Everybody always talks about the importance of the personal project. And I agree, I think they are important for several different reasons. But how do you come up with your subject? Seriously. I’m curious. I’ll share a few things that inspire me to do personal projects and how I come up with them.
INSPIRED – Episode 11 – The Anti-Pose, Part II
Feb 13, 2019
I wanted to follow up on the last episode of INSPIRED. There’s more to the Anti-Pose approach than simply not traditionally posing someone. Hope you find this information helpful. Enjoy.
Photography Matters Ep 63 – Memories Matter
Feb 12, 2019
My Mom was my favorite person I’ve ever known. One of many things that I admire about her is that she knew how important it was to always take photos of the family. My dad was actually a professional photographer for a short time, but it was really my Mom who was the documentary photographer of the family. She knew how important that photography was, and how lucky we’d be to have those memories to look back on throughout the years.
INSPIRED – Episode 10 – The Anti-Pose, Part I
Feb 11, 2019
I love photographing people. I love working with people to create strong photos that really evoke a feel from the viewer. In this episode I talk about how I get stronger photos from not posing the models.
INSPIRED – Episode 9 – Self Assignments
Feb 08, 2019
One of the coolest things in photography is the self assignent. It gives the photography as well as the photographer a purpose. That in itself is an inspiring and motivating force. Have a great weekend!
INSPIRED – Episode 8 – Save the money…
Feb 07, 2019
Taken with my OM-1, ACROS pushed to 400
I think we’ve all been there… spending money on gear we just don’t need. This episode is kind of a followup conversation about an article I recently posted on PhotographyMattersPodcast.com. It got some interesting responses and the conversations were a lot of fun. Enjoy.
Ever have those photo shoots where everything goes as planned; everything is perfect and it’s a breeze? Pretty awesome, huh? Actually, I have better memories of the shoots in which everything was not so perfect; some kind of problem came up; an issue we had to deal with.
INSPIRED – Episode 6 – Get WIERDER! (the sequel)
Feb 04, 2019
Hope you all had a great weekend. I just wanted to follow up on yestday’s post, “Get Wierd, and then Just Don’t Care.” Add a few things that I thought were important but didn’t want to make the episode any longer. If you haven’t heard yesterday’s episode yet, you might want to start there to get a little bit of context: INSPIRED – Episode 5 – Get Weird, and Then Just Don’t Care
INSPIRED – Episode 5 – Get Weird, and Then Just Don’t Care
Feb 03, 2019
You know what I love about art, particularly photography? It’s finding people who put out work that is so unique, there’s something different about it. That art clearly shows that they are following their unique and individual passion in the photography that they’re producing. I love that.
INSPIRED – Episode 4 – Happy Accidents
Feb 02, 2019
One of my favorite things that happens from time to time in photography, or any creative field for that matter, is known as the happy accident… Something that might have at first struck you as a mistake or an accident… but later you’re very glad it happened.
Happy Friday, hope everyone had a great week. Hey, I went over to Tivoli Village last night. They were hosting a car show. I got a few shots and just wanted to tell you about it, maybe have some suggestions that can help you figure out what you want to photograph this week. Have a great weekend!
I am not interested in rules or conventions. Photography is not a sport.
— Bill Brandt, 1904 – 1983
Bill Brandt is easily in the list of Who’s Who of photographers of the twentieth century. I’ve heard his name a lot, but it wasn’t until recently that I took a more serious look at his work. Wow, he’s now instantly become one of my favorite photographers. Not only because of his photography, but also because of his philosophy on photography.
Photography Matters Ep 61 – Tonya and Rollei Retro 400s
Jan 29, 2019
It’s no secret that I’ve really been enjoying shooting Rollei Retro 400s, a very beautiful black and white film. I’ve mostly shot it at box speed, 400, but have also played around with it at EI 1600 as well. Both speeds offer great results. I’ve been a little anxious to do an intimate portraiture photo shoot with this film ever since I shot the first roll and saw the results.
I’ve been referring to this film as “moody” and thought it would be really interesting to see how that moody film might work for the beauty photography and portrait work I do. Well, I finally got to find out when I used it on my recent photo shoot with Tonya. I’ll share the results and my thoughts on this film in this episode.
INSPIRED – Episode 1 – Shoot a Friend
Jan 25, 2019
This is the first episode of a new series I’ve been thinking about starting for a while now. It will be in addition to Photography Matters, but follow a less structured format. The episodes will be shorter and may come out several times a week, or maybe not. The topic for the show…. Inspiration; topics that inspire me, and hopefully might inspire you as well. I hope you enjoy it.
Photography Matters Ep 60 – CREATIVITY
Jan 22, 2019
Creativity; it’s one of the most important building blocks of life. Okay, that’s a little heavy, I’ll try and keep this focused (see what I did there) on Photography.
Photography Matters Ep 59 – Your Website – A Digital Memory Lane (and yes, they’re still important)
Jan 15, 2019
With so much of our online time spent on social media these days, does anyone ever pay attention to their own websites? Or do the even have a website? Are website’s still important? All that and much, much more in this episode.
Photography Matters Ep 58 – Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Meyerowitz, Jay Maisel – Photographers I could listen to all day.
Jan 11, 2019
You know those certain photographer who, when they speak about photography, it really resonates with you; inspires you and you could listen to them all day. I’ll talk about a couple of photographers that fit that bill for me, and also talk about a daily source of ideas and inspiration… all in one book.
Photography Matters Ep 56 – AI Photography
Dec 25, 2018
Yuliya Shumilova – Not AI Photography
I just read an article on PetaPixel’s site that talks about photographs created completely using aritificial intelligence. I’m talking about portraits of people that don’t exist, completely made up by AI. Hmmmmm…
Photography Matters Ep 55 – I should’ve just gone to Lamps Plus, also Photos that Stay With You
Dec 18, 2018
I know this shot is pretty dark, just wanted to show the actual lack of light we were shooting with. 🙂
In a couple recent photo shoots I’ve found myself using a reading lamp as my key light source. It’s funny how, after spending thousands of dollars on “professional” lighting, I find myself preferring to use just common household lamps, reading lamps, that kind of thing. Also, I want to revisit the importance of studying the work of others; particularly the people who really inspire and motivate you. It’s powerful education and food for your photography and creativity.
Photography Matters Ep 54 – PreVisualization vs Intuitive Visualization
Dec 04, 2018
In this episode I talk about previsualization and how important it is to photography. Then I go a step further and get into what I call Intuitive Visualization. I’ll also share a few things and photos from my road trip through Arizona last weekend. Fun stuff.
Photography Matters Ep 53 – Phases in Photography, Another Road Trip and More Stuff
Nov 27, 2018
I love how often, the things you’re really passionate about in life can keep you engaged by bringing you through different phases, different stages. Photography is very much that way for me, and I’m just at the beginning of the next phase. Also have a short road trip coming up this weekend. I’m really looking forward to taking a few cameras, rolling enough film for the trip and enjoying the time on the road… and hopefully getting a few cool shots along the way.
Photography Matters Ep 52 – Islands of Light, Listening to Music and the Negative Positives Film Photography Podcast
Nov 20, 2018
Rollei Retro 400s pushed to 1600Rollei Retro 400s pushed to 1600
One thing I really love about going out and shooting at night is the contrast. I love the dark shadows that take away so much of the distractions, letting the light more strongly feature the main elements of the scene. I talk about this on today’s episode and also wanted to talk about a recent guest spot I did on another podcast, The Negative Positives Film Photography Podcast with photographers, Mike Gutterman and Andre Domingues; great podcast. Also, do you listen to music while you’re doing your photography? I share my thoughts on that topic as well.
Photography Matters Ep 51 – I Love Sundays (also, The Future of Photography, Passion and Photographer, Rozanna Giannakis)
Nov 13, 2018
I love Sundays; such a peaceful vibe. It always seems like things kind of slow down a bit on Sundays. I know that’s not the case for everyone, but that particular day has always had that kind of vibe to me.
On this Sunday, in this episode, I wanted to just sit down and talk; share some thoughts I’ve had recently about photography and more specifically how important I think it is to really focus on making the kind of photos that you’re really passionate about. I also want to talk about another photographer, Rozanna Giannakis and her beautiful and minimal approach to her photography.
Rozanna’s site RozannaGiannakis.com Do yourself a favor and check out the different categories of photography and other information that Rozanna shares, but definitely check out the couple of posts she’s added to her Travel section. Very cool stuff.
Photography Matters Ep 50 – Pushing Rollei Retro 400s to 1600, Development Info and Sample Photos
Oct 30, 2018
I’ve been talking about my new found love for Rollei Retro 400s, and mentioned that I would test this film out, pushing it to EI 1600. Had some fun with that and I wanted to share the results and also talk about the development information, times, etc… Hope you enjoy!
Photography Matters Ep 49 – More Talk About Rollei Retro 400s, Bulk Rolling Film and Sample Photos
Oct 23, 2018
After my initial experience with Rollei Retro 400s, I was cautiously already in love with this film. Is it as versatile as the film I’ve been shooting lately, Kodak Tri-X? No, but like Acros, there’s a very unique beauty and mood to the look of this film. I decided to shoot a few more rolls in different conditions to see if it would consistently perform well. I’ll share my thoughts about the film after shooting more of it, and talk about a few other things.
Photography Matters Ep 48 – Rollei Retro 400s, Initial Thoughts and Sample Shots
Oct 16, 2018
Remember last year when we found out Fujifilm was going to discontinue ACROS in the 35mm and 120 format this year, and I started testing different types of film to replace ACROS, the film that I had shot pretty much exlusively for the past couple of years? During that time I had purchased a couple rolls of Rollei Retro 400s, but before I had a chance to shoot it I had kind of fallen in love with Tri-X. Well this past week, wanting to do something different, I decided to go ahead and try out the Rollei and in this episode I want to share my initial thoughts and some sample images.
Photography Matters Ep 47 – Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
Oct 09, 2018
Have you ever taken a shot (or shots) that you just love; this photograph just really resonates with you; you feel so much from this image, but you’re worried about sharing it because you noticed a technical issue? I have. Or I should say, I used to.
Photography Matters Ep 46 – Leica Gear Stolen; EKTACHROME ships; Photographer Todd Hido, His Process and Other Stuff
Oct 02, 2018
Some interesting things happening in photography last week: A Leica store in Scottland is robbed of over $200K worth of Leica cameras and lenses; Kodak starts shipping EKTACHROME out to retailers; Emulsive.org featured an interview of me and my thoughts on why I shoot film and I saved the best for last; I watched an interesting video, a presentation by photographer, Todd Hido. Todd is a fantastic story teller with his photography… by letting you come up with your own story from the images. He shares his process and his art. Good stuff!

Man, so many new cameras have been announced recently; and these are some pretty interesting bodies. Quite the buzz online these days about all this new gear… it can make one’s head spin. For me though, having all these new cameras announced so closely together; and with all the social media conversations, praising this or that feature, or complaining about what this or that camera doesn’t have; for me, in my mind I can still hear that quiet but very sound voice in the midst of all this noise… “It’s not about the gear.”
Photography Matters Ep 43 – Printing, Mining Your Archives and Stuff
Sep 11, 2018
This episode is kind of mixed bag of topics. I did a lot of printing this week so I want to talk a little bit (more) about that. Also, if you’ve been shooting for a long time you’ve probably got a significant catalog of work. It might be interesting to go back through your earlier photos and take a second look. I talk a little more about working with people, doing portraiture and I even consider the possibility of shooting color negative film. I hope you enjoy the episode.
Photography Matters Ep 42 – Sharing Your Photography, Physically – Prints
Sep 04, 2018
These days I know it’s so easy to share our photographs on Instagram; even when we get together with other photographers, we’re often sharing our work with each other via our screens; our phones; our tablets. I think this is another great reason to embrace printing your work and actually giving someone something tangible, that they can actually hold and look at (without the use of electricity).
Photography Matters Ep 39 – Does Easier = Better?
Aug 14, 2018
Technology is this fast track now, getting faster everyday; mostly with the purpose of making our lives easier; making the things we love to do… easier. But when it comes to things you really care about, like photography, or just being creative… is “easy” really the way you want to go with things?
Photography Matters Ep 38 – Photography and Social Media – Shooting for Likes?
Aug 07, 2018
Photography and Social media is a match made in… well, I won’t say heaven, but it is definitely a strong combination that can, like anything, be both good or bad, depending on how it’s used. But should it shape the way we shoot? Should we shoot for “Likes?”
Photography Matters Ep 37 – Using Cinema as Inspiration, Day Trips & Is ACROS Staying?
Aug 03, 2018
I just want to chat with you in this episode about some of the things I’ve been doing lately; how I use cinema/movies for inspiration; some day road trips I’ve been taking and… is ACROS NOT going away?
These first few are from my trip, heading up US95, northbound, chasing the clouds, ending up in the ghost town, Rhyolite, NV. All photos shot on Kodak Tri-X, pushed to 1600, but using a 3-stop ND filter.
Headed South
These next shots were taken during my trip, heading south on 93. Hoover Dam and Willow Creek. Same camera, film and settings.
Photography Matters Ep 36 – Working with Models, Part II: Where Are They?, Model Releases, MUAs and Keep Your Hands to Yourself
Jul 31, 2018
This is the second part of a two part series on working with models. In this episode I kind of fill in the blanks of what I didn’t cover in the first episode. This two part series obviously doesn’t cover the whole spectrum of what’s involved (that really would require it’s own dedicated podcast!) but hopefully this will give you enough information to go out on your own and get started working with models.
Photography Matters Ep 35 – Working with Models, Part I: Human 1st, Photographer 2nd
Jul 27, 2018
Working with models is one of my favorite parts of photography; working with another creative person, creating beautiful photos together. In this episode I’ll share some tips and ideas; things that have helped me to create strong photos when working with a model.
Photography Matters Ep 34 – Shoot with Feel, Shoot with Passion
Jul 24, 2018
Kodak Tri-X, pushed to 1600, lit with the 15 watt bulb in the reading lamp.
I think (hope) one thing we are all trying to do with our photography is create photographs that cause the viewer to feel a certain way; to create images that convey a feeling, hopefully in a style and manner that consistently flows through all of our work. In a time in which gear and technique are the more popular topics, I think conversations like the one in this episode are more important now than ever.
Photography Matters Ep 33 – Photo Shoot with Yuli Shumilova, Tri-X and Cheap Lighting
Jul 20, 2018
This photo shoot gave me so much to look forward to – shooting with Yuli, shooting with Tri-X and using some unusual lighting. The results… I couldn’t be happier with what we got that night.
For this shoot I used my M6 with Tri-X pushed to 1600, going back and forth between Summicron 35mm and 50mm, depending on the shot. I also took a few digital images with my Leica M (typ262). I’ve posted a couple of those shots on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter today, but the main point of the shoot was to check out Tri-X pushed to 1600 for this kind of intimate shoot, so the shots on this post are all shot on film. Enjoy.
Still plenty of window light to shoot with.
Light starting to go down, getting a little darker, moodier.
Now we’re using the 15 watt bulb reading lamp.
Now going for more of a low(er) key look. Still using the reading lamp with the 15 watt bulb.
Photography Matters Ep 32 – Books, Pushing Film and Stuff
Jul 17, 2018
Two photo books from two different photographers arrived this week. (always a good thing!) I want to talk a little about these photographers and also answer some questions I’ve received about pushing film and using ND filters.
Photography Matters Ep 31 – Road Trip and My New Love Affair with Kodak Tri-X
Jul 13, 2018
Wednesday morning I woke up way too early and couldn’t go back to sleep. This happens every now and then with me, but on this day I decided to take advantage of actually being up before the day became unbearably hot here in Southern Nevada. I grabbed my M6, loaded with Tri-X, jumped in the car and headed out for a short road trip.
Photography Matters Ep 30 – Photographer, Matt Day
Jul 09, 2018
Matt Day has been a staple of the YouTube film photography world for a few years now. He’s put out so many videos and provided good, solid, helpful advice to so many of us over the years.
Recently Matt has been in poor health and he and his family could really use your support right now.
Photography Matters Ep 29 – Studying the Work of Others
Jul 07, 2018
You know those moments when you’re scrolling down through your Instagram or Facebook feed and you come across a photo that really grabs your attention? Take the time to study that image. What is it about the photo that really moves you. By figuring that out, this could be one of the most important forms of your education in developing and moving forward as a photographer.
Photography Matters Ep 28 – Personal Projects, W. Eugene Smith and Event Photography
Jul 03, 2018
Personal projects are one of the most important cornerstones in being a photographer today. They can give you the structure, the guidence, the deadlines and the results that can continue to stimulate you as a photographer and perhaps put the meaning into your work that you’ve been looking for.
Photography Matters Ep 27 – Why Do We Shoot?
Jun 26, 2018
I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while now, and recently started noticing other photographers talk about this topic on their podcasts and videos, so I thought I would throw my thoughts into the mix. I’m also interested in hearing your thoughts and stories.
If you’re not familiar with the work of Saul Leiter, you really owe it to yourself to check out his photography. He is one of my very favorite photographers. The mood and the feel from his photography is so inspirational to me and I connect with it very strongly. Mood, intimacy, personal attachment, and the layers…. Beautiful work. I’ve put some photos together on Pinterest that you can check out Mr. Leiter’s photography. I should say in advance that, depending on where you work, some of the images might be considered NSFW.
Photography Matters Ep 26 – Be a Resource to Others
Jun 22, 2018
Everyone, no matter what level you are at, can have something they can help others with. The nice surprise is, being a resource to others is actually one of the best gifts you can give to yourself.
Photography Matters Ep 25 – Artisan Obscura
Jun 19, 2018
I don’t generally talk that much about manufacturers and companies on the podcast, but in this episode I want to share information about a company that manufactures products I really love. Artisan Obscura
Photography Matters Ep 24 – Strength in Simplicity
Jun 15, 2018
Fujifilm X-Pro2, XF 56mm f1.2
Simplicity can be applied to so many areas of photography, and in most cases I feel that if you apply simplicity with intention, you can actually improve your overall approach to photography. Again… in most cases.
Photography Matters Ep 23 – My Parallels Between Jazz and Photography
Jun 12, 2018
Although the content of this episode is rather subjective and directly applies to me and how I approach creativity, I’m hoping you’ll be able to see how it can apply to help you with your approach to your photography. This is just part of my ongoing path in finding ways to stay inspired and motivated; to find other sources of insparation that are already existing in each of our daily lives.
Photography Matters Ep 22 – The Search to Replace ACROS – Part III – Search Over?
Jun 08, 2018
In this episode of Photography Matters I want to share with you a unique film that I had a chance to shoot with this week. Of the four film stocks I’ve shot in the past weeks, this one easily comes closest to the look of our beloved Acros. Does this mean the search is over?
Photography Matters Ep 21 – This Was a Nice Surprise – Kodak Tri-X 400
Jun 05, 2018
Kodak Tri-X pushed to 800
Kodak Tri-X, wow, probably the most classic popular black and white film around. I’ve found this is really a love/hate film. Either people are passionate about, and love this film, or others just really can’t stand it and can’t bring themselves to shoot a roll. This week I took a break from my journy to find a fine grain replacement for my beloved ACROS to get into the grittier side of film photography and shot some Tri-X. In this episode I’ll share my feelings about my experience. I have to say I was a little surprised.
Photography Matters Ep 20 – The Search to Replace ACROS – Part II – Ilford FP4 Plus
May 29, 2018
Still looking for a film that I would be happy to shoot with once my stock of ACROS runs out, I shot a couple rolls of Ilford FP4 Plus. It’s rated at 125 but I had been hearing from many who liked it when pushed to 200, so I shot both rolls at 200. Anyway, I’m happy to share my thoughts on how this film worked for me.
Photography Matters Ep 19 – Road Trips, Ghost Towns and Instant Film
May 25, 2018
Leica M6, Summicron 35mm, ACROS pushed to 400
I’m always looking for ways to stay motivated with my photography. Burn out seems pretty common these days among photographers, including myself. I really have to mix things up now and then to keep from ending up in a creative rut. Maybe I might try shooting with a different camera; shooting different film; looking through a new photo book from a photographer who’s work I admire… As I come up with things to keep myself motivated, I like to share these with you guys and gals, hoping it might be something useful to you, so you don’t end up in a creative rut. In this episode I talk about the ever popular… Road Trip.
Photography Matters Ep 18 – Portland, Oregon and Traveling with Film
May 22, 2018
Portland, Oregon… probably my favorite city I’ve ever lived in… in spite of the rain. I got a chance to fly up to Portland for a few days last week. Before the trip I kind of went back and forth, trying to decide on if I should take a film camera or just make things easier and shoot digital on this trip. I did end up taking a film camera, and man, I’m so glad I did.
I took my Leica M6, Summicron 35mm lens and shot all Fujifilm ACROS while I was there, all pushed to 400. Man, I will miss this film so much.
My daughter, Celeste, standing in front of the apartment building I mentioned in the podcast. My old apartment was the one on the third floor with the fire escape and the open window…. great place! My daughter, CelesteSteel Bridge, opened in 1912Broadway BridgeBroadway Bridge, opened in 1913Steel Bridge, opened in 1912Steel Bridge, opened in 1912Just Cool…Steel Bridge, opened in 1912Steel Bridge, opened in 1912 – see, so many different angles to shoot these bridges… I’d never get bored.Hawthorne Bridge, opened in 1910 – I used to ride my bike over this bridge all the time.
Photography Matters Ep 17 – The Search to Replace ACROS – Part I
May 11, 2018
With Fujifilm adding Neopan ACROS 100 in both 35mm and 120 formats to their list of film to discontinue this year, I’m starting a search to find a film I will love as much as I do, ACROS. Maybe I won’t find it, but I will try, and I’ll share my results with you as I check out different types of film.
This week I started by shooting with Ilford Delta 100 and Kodak Tmax 100. I’ll include some of the shots from each of these films down below. Hope you enjoy the shots and the episode.
Photography Matters Ep 16 – Data Storage – Don’t Lose Your Photos
May 08, 2018
In this episode I share a personal story about my recent data storage adventures hoping you can learn from my mistakes; updates on the Olympus OM-1 and talk briefly about the medium format camera, the Mamiya RB67.
Photography Matters Ep 15 – Podcasts and Other Such Things
Apr 27, 2018
There are so many good podcasts available these days. I subscribe to a pretty fair amount. I do love hearing other photographers talking about their craft, their creative process; and I do enjoy podcasts about film, gear and all that. But the shows that I’m inspired by the most are the ones that really don’t focus on the gear, but photography itself. In this episode I share 3 of my favorite podcasts that really just center around good coversations about photography and the creative process.
Photography Matters Ep 14 – Being Distracted by the Elements of Photography
Apr 24, 2018
Photographers look at photos differently than how normal people (people less obsessed with photography) look at photos. We see the content, the subject, but we’re also very conscious of the elements of the photograph; the exposure, lighting, contrast, etc… All that is great, but I think it often can take our attention away from seeing if it really is a strong photo or not.
Photography Matters Ep 13 – My Five Favorite Photography Movies
Apr 20, 2018
I pretty much eat, sleep and breath photography. I love anything photography related. I especially love movies in which photography plays an important part of the story. Not just documentary films, but Hollywood movies, actors, directors, stories, that kind of thing. In case you’re like me and also would enjoy these kinds of films, I wanted to share a list of five movies in which photography does play an important part of the story.
Director Michelangelo Antonioni. Main character roughly based on David Bailey. A fashion photographer believes he may have witnessed a crime and becomes obsessed with figuring it out. Plenty of cliche 1960s style, photo shoots, models, photography. It’s even got a club scene where the Yardbirds were playing. Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck.
The story of photojournalists, Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek, João Silva and Greg Marinovich; their interactions within the townships of South Africa during the Apartheid period, particularly between 1990 and 1994, from when Nelson Mandela was released from prison to the 1994 elections. . Please note: It does contain some pretty graphically violent scenes, so might not be for everyone.
Photographer, bored with shooting weddings and engagement shoots offers a service, Gum Shoe Photography. The client pays him and lets him know where and when they’ll be on a certain day. Then the photographer hides nearby, follows and photographs the person without them seeing him. Then he meets with them later and shows them the images. Kind of a “Day in the Life” kind of photo documentary service. But then he gets a female client that he becomes a little infatuated with….
Photography Matters Ep 12 – Variety – Essential to Photography
Apr 17, 2018
As photographers, it’s easy to get in a rut, get into a comfort zone and stay there for long periods of time. This can cause you to stop growing as a photographer, then you become less stimulated, excited about what you’re doing. Then you’re not inspired, not motivated and you get bored with your photography.
We have to force ourselves to mix things up; break out of our comfort zone; continue to grow and be stimulated. In this episode I talk about this and share a couple personal examples of how I change things up from time to time.
Photography Matters Ep 11 – An Overview of Developing Your Own Black and White Film at Home
Apr 13, 2018
A lot of people are enjoying shooting film again, some for the first time. Film is becoming more and more popular with each year that passes. Film sales keep going up.
But one thing that does seem to hinder people from wanting to get into that medium is the cost of having your film developed. In this episode I want to share my thoughts and go over the process I use to develop my own black and white film at home. It’s so much easier than most people think. I actually enjoy the process and it can really help you keep the costs down. Enjoy the show!
The Process I Use for Developing ACROS Pushed to 400
This is the process I use to develop Fujifilm Neopan 100 ACROS B&W film, both at box speed (which I hardly ever use) and for when the film is pushed to 400 (which I pretty much always do).
The process described below pretty much follows what Matt does, except I’ve adjusted the times for ACROS film as suggested by the Massive Dev Chart: http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php
I recommend picking up the Massive Dev app for your mobile device. This times each step of the process for you and lets you know when to change to the next step.
Please note that I am in no way an expert on developing film. I’ve only been doing it for a little less than three years. This is just my method I use based on Matt Day’s info and the Massive Dev Chart, so use at your own risk (there really isn’t any), but this is what I do to produce the ACROS film shots you see in my Instagram feed.
Loading the Film into the Paterson Tank
(again, check out Matt’s video if you’re not already familiar with this method)
This method requires that you have a dark/changing bag or completely a dark light-sealed room to load your film on to a Paterson developing tank. You’ll need to open your 35mm film canister with a bottle opener and load the film onto a spool that goes into the Paterson tank. You have to do all this without being able to see what you’re doing, so you have to be able to do it by feel.
Developing the Film
PreWash
1 minute pre wash in water, agitate for the full minute
Develop
Kodak HC-110 (dilution B, 1 part developer + 31 parts water) 20°C/68°F
5:30 for box speed 100
10 minutes when pushed to 400
agitate for first full minute, then for 10 seconds every minute
tap the tank against the table top a couple times after each agitation to remove bubbles
after development time is up, dump the developer out of the tank.
Stop Bath
1 minute in water, agitate for the full minute
after 1 minute dump the water out of the tank
Fixer
Photographers’ Formulary TF-4 Archival Rapid Fixer (dilution 1 part fixer + 4 parts water)
5 minutes
agitate for first full minute, then for 10 seconds every minute
tap the tank against the table top a couple times after each agitation to remove bubbles
at the end of 5 min. return the Fixer to a dark container, you can reuse it at least 15-20 times.
Final Wash
10 minutes in Water.
First fill the Paterson tank and dump twice to rinse the fixer out.
Then fill the canister one more time and then let the water continuously run for 10 minutes into the Paterson tank. (very small stream just to keep some movement in the tank)
after 10 min. dump the water out of the tank.
Soap Rinse
Kodak Professional Photo-Flo 200
add enough water into the tank to cover the spool of film and maybe a half inch more on top
add a cap full of Photo-Flo into the tank and agitate for 1-2 minutes.
Hang Negatives to Dry
once rinse is done pour it out over a sponge lined tong so that the sponges are soaked, then wring out the excess water from the sponges.
remove the film from the spool and put a clip on one end and hold on to it firmly with one hand while using the tongs to remove excess soap from the film. Probably just need to do this twice.
hang the film up (I do this over the bath tub with a wire loop I’ve attached to the curtain rod)
I usually let the film dry for a couple hours. This may very based on where you live and how humid it is there. Sometimes if I develop the film late at night I’ll let them hang overnight. This usually works fine, but it does give more opportunity for dust to gather on the film so you may have to do more dust removal in post.
Check Out Matt’s Video
For a visual demonstration of this method I recommend you watch Matt Day’s tutorial video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/8I41UExVJWI
Photography Matters Ep 10 – Those Kodak Moments
Apr 10, 2018
Remember back in the day… when Kodak made commercials to sell their film they would refer to the “Kodak Moments” of your like; those moments you would definitely want photographs of to remember these occassions. They usually weren’t referring to that fine art shot you got, or that amazing photo shoot. They were generally referring to more personal moments, usually with family, babies, kids events, your daughter’s wedding, etc… I know we’re all taking photos to try and reflect our artistic side, or our skills as fantastic photographers, but are you remembering to take photos of those personal, Kodak Moments?
Photography Matters Ep 9 – Personal Projects for Moving Forward
Apr 06, 2018
Often I’ll just grab my camera, head downtown, or down the Strip, maybe the Art District and hope to see something amazing happen in front of my lens. Capture that decisive moment. Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn’t and I come back not quite so satisfied with my photography that day. One way to get more satisfaction and exercise your creativity more is through Personal Projects.
Photography Matters Ep 8 – My Favorite Miles Davis Quote
Apr 03, 2018
One of my favorite quotes,
Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.”
– Miles Davis
Although Miles was obviously speaking about development as a musician, this is just one of the many parallels I see between musicians and photographers. As a photographer you go through a lot before you finally start shooting with your own voice, your own style. In this episode I want to give you an exercise to hopefully help you be more consciously aware of the things that are important to you in your photography, so that you’re able to focus more and create the kind of art that’s important to you.
Photography Matters Ep 7 – Say Goodbye to ACROS?
Mar 31, 2018
For anyone who has known me for the past couple of years you’re probably pretty aware of how obsessed I’ve become shooting with Fujifilm Neopan 100 ACROS film. It’s gorgeous stuff. I’ve never loved the look of my photography more than I have since I started shooting with ACROS a couple years ago. This morning a rumor hit the web, saying that based on some document translations, there’s a good chance that as of October, 2018 Fujifilm will officially discontinue this beautiful film in both 35mm and 120 formats. In this episode I share my thoughts on this.
Photography Matters EP 6 – Olympus OM-1
Mar 29, 2018
Man, this is a fun camera. I just happened to be watching YouTube one day recently and saw a video on the Olympus OM-1. It caught my attention and long story short, I own one now. I don’t prescribe always buying new gear to get you out of a slump, but this camera and lens together cost less than $200 USD and is very fun to shoot. The image quality really surprised me. Beautiful.
Photography Matters Ep 5 – Your Photography Website
Mar 26, 2018
If you are at all serious about your photography, you need a website. In this episode I go over the reasons why it’s crucial to have your own site; different platforms you can use to build and run your site; things you need to think about when putting your site together, your content; and most of all how to approach your site like it’s your own personal online magazine about what you love and are so passionate about… your photography.
Photography Matters Ep 4 – Why You Should be Shooting Everyday
Mar 21, 2018
As with any kind of creative artform that you involve yourself in, the last thing you want to do is start thinking during your creative process. By shooting everyday, you’ll be exercising your eye, your vision, your compositional skills to the point where when you do shoot, you act and perform more instintively. That’s the level you want to reach; to be able to create the kind of photos that can only be created with your vision.
Photography Matters Ep 2 – Be the Inspiration You’re Looking For

Having trouble staying inspired and motivated with your photography? Scouring YouTube and Instagram looking for inspiration, new concepts but just not finding anything that really inspires you? Be the inspiration you’re looking for.
