With only a little over a week to go before next Tuesday's trade deadline, Paul and Matt take an updated look at the deal landscape (spoiler: Not a ton has changed), welcome back J.T., wonder if the division is all but over in light of the Braves' latest injuries (Whit Merrifield notwithstanding), and look ahead to the forthcoming six-man rotation.
The Phillies dropped their final series of the first half (whatever), and now get to send nearly a third of their roster to Texas for All-Star festivities. With the break upon us, eyes begin to turn even more toward the trade deadline later this month. Paul and Matt talk about a surging Gregory Soto, the lack of a fit for Brent Rooker (and a better fit for others), and how the Phillies view the upcoming second half.
It's a special All-Star edition of PT, as Paul and Matt talk about the team's seven(!) All-Star nods. Plus, Phillies pitcher Orion Kerkering drops by to chat about the clear and widening gaps between the upper minors and the Major Leagues, the mental and physical adjustments it takes to work on an unpredictable schedule, and the MVP of the bullpen hat-toss game.
The Phillies, fortunate to escape last weekend's series with a split against the Marlins, now set their sights toward a far tougher stretch. Are these really "must-win" games against the Cubs, Braves, and Dodgers? How much comfort does the current division lead really afford the team? And how much clearer are the roster "problems" to be addressed this month? Paul and Matt dig in/
You know it's hot when the thermometer's reading is higher than Matt Strahm's ERA. The Phillies wrapped up a (literally) scorching homestand where they took 4 of 6 from NL West opponents — including a NLCS "rematch" with Arizona — and now swing out to Detroit before a weekend date with the Marlins. Paul and Matt review Cristopher Sanchez's new contract, Taijuan Walker's injury, and fondly remember the Steve Susdorf Game. Be sure to listen all the way to the end for an easter egg!
The quest for 100 wins and beyond had a minor setback this week in the Phils' first games back stateside since London, but they're really no worse for wear. Plus, the cavalry is coming in the form of Brandon Marsh (already returned) and Trea Turner (to be activated Monday). With a hot homestand on deck, the Phillies will look to right the ship and get back to their winning (more often) ways.
After giving Europe a taste of their particular brand of baseball in a characteristically weird two-game set, the Phillies return home from London for an American League road test against the Red Sox and Orioles. Paul and Matt look back on London — from David Dahl to Gregory Soto — and look ahead to the Injured List cavalry of Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh returning.
Hoby Milner! Oliver Dunn! Matt Klentak! And some guy named Rhys Hoskins. The Brewers are in town for the Phillies' last regular set before this weekend's London Series, with a warm welcome expected for (at least) one of those guys. Paul and Matt recap the injury situation, lament Whit Merrifield a little, and look ahead to the Phils and Mets unleashing their particular brand of baseball on some unsuspecting Europeans.
There is no greater equalizer, no force more compelling, no gravity more inescapable than that of some grating defeats out west. It is inevitable. The Phillies finish navigating their stretch out in The Forbidden Lands having finally lost a series and consecutive games. Now, with Ronald Acuña Jr.'s season ending prematurely, the onus is squarely on the Phillies to keep the Braves at arm's length.
The Phillies continue to capitalize with the cards they're dealt, sweeping the Nationals over the weekend to reach a ludicrous 20 games over .500 before Memorial Day. Paul and Matt go over how the schedule has helped (but not caused) the hot start, the useful Kody Clemens, and a growing fascination with Cristopher Sánchez.
Another week, another winning record. Despite some dings and dents, the Phillies kept their no-loss series streak alive. Now, they take on two more NL East rivals in what should be a slightly tougher test than the one the Marlins provided. Paul and Matt talk about roster fits and flexibility, the reemergence of Bryson Stott, and how to strategize for potential summer trade pickups.
Phillies Pitching Coach Caleb Cotham (@ceetwo35) joins Paul and Matt as his (practically) league-leading staff has helped carry the Phils to their best start in years. He shares his thoughts on preparation and injury avoidance, game planning and altering repertoires. Plus, Paul and Matt on the Trea Turner injury and what lies ahead for the middle of the infield.
Paul and Matt's first Twitch simulcast episode (of which you are hearing the audio-only portion, naturally) finds them evaluating the ups and downs, reals and not-reals of the season's first nearly-complete calendar month.
The Phillies did what they were supposed to, and then some, sweeping consecutive home series against two downtrodden teams. Now, the tests resume on a swing across the country from Ohio to California. Paul and Matt review the team's readiness for keeping the division close, the coming rotation shuffle with Taijuan Walker's return, and take a moment to appreciate the team being in the midst of a new "golden age."
As we continue to wait to herald the offense's arrival, the pitching continues to carry the day and keep the Phils afloat. With two of the league's more down-and-out teams coming to Philly this week, now would be the time to bust out the big bats.
It's not quite the fast start everyone was hoping for, but at 4-5 the Phillies are far from a disaster out of the gate. They carry some lineup concerns, but with strong pitching carrying most of the load, there are encouraging signs (even for those who have struggled) to be found as the team wraps its first roadtrip.
The Braves bolt out of the gate looking like a regular season power again, while the Phillies scrape together a salvaging Sunday win. Plus some thoughts on stated intentions (generally speaking) and how it'll be "still early" for the likes of Johan Rojas and Brandon Marsh for a little while yet.
Roster reviews! Positional breakdowns! Over/unders and props! A little bit too much laughing about Edmundo Sosa's aggressive approach! It must be time for the 2024 Phillies season preview. Join us on the journey and get ready for the opening series against the Braves.
As we begin the final week's worth of spring games, the Phillies have a couple of injury contingencies to think about: How will Bryce Harper's ability to play 1B impact the bench spot battle, and how long will Orion Kerkering need to ramp up? Plus, Ranger's early availability and the impacts the Giants' Blake Snell move could have on the Wild Card race.
Nearing the home stretch of the spring, the focus is squarely on health. As long as everyone stays healthy, this time is all about "swinging through it." Paul and Matt dig into what that means for Johan Rojas's slow start and the positional dominoes around him, as well as the Spring Breakout coming up this weekend.
Paul and Matt hop on to talk through Monday's news of Zack Wheeler's long-awaited extension, implications for the talent development pipeline, and how the somewhat unique deal for a somewhat unique pitcher stacks up to others across the league.
It's Matt's last check-in on location in Clearwater, and with just a handful of games in the bag, the guys chat about a back field game invention, Cris Sánchez's reinvention, and a lack of apprehension around Bryce Harper's (entirely too early) Gold Glove case.
Spring games are only days away, and we're feeling it. We chat about Whit Merrifield, money maneuvering, a long-term crystal ball outlook for Alec Bohm, and the drive to resemble Chase Utley from the scalp up.
We kick off our third(!) Spring Training on PT the best way we know how: Remembering some guys. David Buchanan is back! Namedrops of Brandon Kintzler, Corey Knebel, Mario Hollands, and more! Zack Wheeler's gonna get paid!
When we decided to record a new episode for this first time in roughly six weeks, very little had happened. So we asked what was on your mind...then the team immediately decided to sign Kolby Allard, and we watched Rhys Hoskins officially leave and land in Milwaukee.
So Paul and Matt had a few things to talk about after all: Who's left to add? What's the team's long-term faith in the outfield and Alec Bohm (who's yet to sign his '24 deal)? Plus, one last round of extra appreciation for Hoskins.
Thank you again to everyone who replied with ideas. We love you.
Paul and Matt stop in for one more check-in here in 2023 to talk about Scott Boras's desire to extend Bryce Harper's deal with 8 years remaining (and what that extension could possibly look like), where Rhys Hoskins might end up, Joc Pederson's strange Instagramming, and narrowing the gap between the Phillies and Braves.
Thanks for listening everyone, and a special thanks to supporters Michael, Mary, Matt, Benjamin, and Robert for their kindness this season.
Paul and Matt hit their first offseason checkpoint of this winter on the heels of Aaron Nola's new seven-year agreement. What does the rest of the offseason look like now? Are the splashes done? What about Yamamoto, Montgomery, Imanaga and co.? Dive in.
The offseason is here, sooner than it should've been. Paul and Matt (briefly) revisit Game 7 before looking ahead to some of the storylines (and sneaky subplots) to watch for as the offseason goes into full swing for everyone in November.
A big thank you to those whose questions and thoughts on Twitter helped guide our chat. In no particular order: @Schneckvillemom / @BrentH22510775 / @PhightForRedOct / @testthesoftware / @PhilsTailgate / @hall126 / @MDub_20 / @marklarue2635 / @jayPB08 / @Gourbot3000 / @frankfran29 / @medeajm / @PaddyMac276 / @_Philly_Talk / @AnthonyEsbensen / @phila_fan_, and the jokers (you know who you are).
It's the first Game 7 in Phillies history, and it's one that comes with a chance to repeat as NL Champions and face the Texas Rangers in the World Series. How they got here no longer matters; it's all about who's ready to step up and turn themselves into a legend. Who makes themself immortal tonight?
It's hard to complain about the first two games of this year's NLCS, and we're not about to try. The Phils go west for (if necessary) three games and the chance to repeat as National League champs. Paul and Matt extol the play of the "machine" and look ahead to the next two games, where the Phillies again hold the paper advantage.
It's a bit like looking at yourself in the mirror: In the '23 DBacks, the Phillies surely see shades of themselves from '22. Now, they have to put a stop that visage as their pennant defense continues. The National League Championship Series kicks off tonight; Paul and Matt walk through the names and all the looming matchups.
Citizens Bank Park continues to be a place where magical, legendary things happen. Paul and Matt look back on an incredible Division Series full of huge hits, huge pitching performances, and huge drama. Yooge.
The Phillies and Braves find themselves in familiar territory, locked up at a game apiece heading to Philadelphia for Game 3. Paul and Matt are here to check in and (only briefly) look back at Games 1 and 2 while considering whether the Phils hold the advantage in 2 of the possible 3 games remaining.
The Marlins have been taken care of. Now, the real test begins: A date with destiny and a rematch with the Braves. Paul and Matt look back on how the Phils took care of business against Miami, and what they need to do to topple the Braves again.
Red October is back. The Phillies kick off their Wild Card series tonight, and Paul and Matt dive in to look at how the teams stack up, what the Marlins would need to do to pull off the upset, and the impacts of the Phillies playing at home.
The Phils swept 4 from the Mets, and are lined up to clinch their spot in the playoffs this week. Paul and Matt take a look at the barren landscape of their fellow contenders' pitching, Orion Kerkering, the mercifully easy travel schedule ahead, and wonder a bit more about how Cris Sánchez fits into all this.
Breathing (a bit) easier after the start to the Cardinals series, Paul and Matt size up and rank the top current contenders for the Phillies' opponent in the Wild Card round. Plus a look at how (and with who) the playoff rotation might shake out behind Zack Wheeler. Is Nola still #2? Does Taijuan Walker make a start before Cris Sánchez?
The Phillies still have a top Wild Card spot to solidify, and a little bit of pride to save by keeping the Braves from clinching the division on their turf this week. Paul and Matt survey the pitching situation, the full-unit offensive turnaround since The Ovations, and think about the best outfield combinations as the playoffs creep closer.
With the long holiday weekend in the books, Paul and Matt hop on to talk about the fascinating season that is Kyle Schwarber's 2023, why the bullpen's recent struggles shouldn't conjure too many memories of last September, and a couple Old School vs. New School debates that are sure to go over well.
The Phillies can't stop hitting homers and padding their Wild Card position, and you know what? That feels pretty good. Now the Ohtani Sho(w) comes to town, pitting two franchises who could not be on more different paths against one another. Paul and Matt regroup to extol the virtues of multi-run homers, Bryson Stott possibly turning into an s-word (not that one, the good s-word), and the not-so-impossible feat of winning 90 games.
It's time for another Giants series, and you know what that means: Paul has a normal one. Matt recaps the spectacle of the Little League Classic from out near Williamsport, and the guys take stock of the team and Wild Card scenarios as they head into the end stages of August.
Even a flat ending to last weekend's Twins series can't take all the shine away from the Phillies' current positioning. Their play the past month-plus has helped push them to the top Wild Card seed, with a couple games' cushion to boot. Paul and Matt test the waters of confidence and extol the team's play, while thinking ahead to some upcoming rotation strategy and roster configuring.
It was a productive week in Wild Card Land, as the Phillies surged ahead while some others began to fall off. Paul and Matt check in on post-ovation Trea Turner, the remarkable production of the young bats, the upcoming week-plus of a Frankenstein('s monster) in left field, and local vs. national expectations four months in.
The trade deadline has passed, and the Phillies made their moves. Are Michael Lorenzen and Rodolfo Castro enough to keep this team in playoff position? Will the choice not to add a righty corner bat come back to bite them? Did the rest of the National League Wild Card contenders do enough to make the Phils sweat? Paul and Matt dive in.
Trades are picking up league-wide, but the Phillies have yet to make their move(s). Does the relative silence mean something different is cooking? Is a new pickup as important as getting the guys already in-house to play better? Paul and Matt check in on the even of Tuesday's trade deadline after an uninspiring weekend against the Pirates.
After a disappointing two-series-loss week, Paul and Matt regroup to talk surgery impacts for Andrew Painter, Bryce Harper's immediate doubt allaying, the side effects of rostering Noah Song, and a Hall of Fame diversion.
Paul and Matt run through Bryce Harper's imminent debut at first base, the latest shifts and shake-ups in the trade market, and even a little dabble in Immaculate Grid (spoilers 36:19-42:00).
Editor's note: If the Phillies picked up the #4 seed, they'd likely be in line to face Atlanta if they advanced, despite what we say in the episode. The new format still gets us every now and then.
Paul and Matt hit the All-Star break to talk first-half MVPs, set the stage for the July trade market, and more.
Bryce Harper's power outage has been a bit of a concern, but he's not alone. The Phillies are lacking consistent pop up and down the lineup, which has Paul and Matt scratching their heads a bit despite the team's recent 15-5 stretch. Also, what does Alec Bohm's future hold? Plus, with the landscape of buyers and sellers still in flux, a broad look at what July's trading season could bring and why Paul Goldschmidt almost certainly won't be the play.
Also new this week: We've partnered with the folks at Phillies Nation to expand our office hours and bring the therapy to more folks. Check out their awesome content over at philliesnation.com!
Hey! Two good weeks in a row! Paul still isn't totally convinced, but wins are wins and the Phils are banking them. Meanwhile, Matt's got lots of good news and notes, including a note on a Braves player that shook Paul to his core.
Paul and Matt are feeling better than they were this time last week; winning ballgames will do that for a person. Now, having won 6 of their last 7, the Phils head back west for a swing with the first-place Diamondbacks and last-place (though buoyed!) Athletics. Travel grievances, a revisitation of 2016, and bullpen configurations within.
Paul and Matt decide to get objective with their fears and concerns by putting together a tidy little four-round Concern Draft. Come in and bathe in some aired grievances and worries, the water's (definitely not) fine!
Underperformance ahoy! After taking the holiday week off, Paul and Matt are back to mull over the fate of fifth starters league-wide, the historically woeful top of the lineup, and rocket metaphors.
Paul and Matt, barely hanging on to sanity after just one (1) game in San Francisco, mull over the 5th starter situation, the differing levels of concern over the struggling Bryson Stott and Edmundo Sosa, and some cool things happening in Clearwater.
What will a "good" season in 2023 look like? Through a month and change, ERAs are way up, and offense is thriving well ahead of schedule. How does that change or perspective on the seasons various Phillies are having? How much will a change in the batting order help, hurt, or even matter? And is this week's Dollar Dog Night the last one...ever? Paul and Matt have you covered.
Armed with lots of coffee, Paul and Matt set the stage for Bryce Harper's dramatic early return from Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, and the homecoming to follow next weekend. Plus a little bit of nervousness around Taijuan Walker that all that caffeine probably didn't help with.
The Phillies are drawing big crowds! Bryce Harper is not made of normal flesh and blood! The bullpen is looking great! Only two of these things are literally true, but it's getting tougher to convince us of that. Paul and Matt come down off of the good week that was and look ahead to a tougher stretch against Seattle and Houston.
Paul and Matt buy and sell some early-season trends, with an eye toward Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh, as well as and Matt Strahm and Seranthony Domínguez. That's probably gonna take more than just one eye, actually.
Matt's latest mailbag: https://theathletic.com/4419010/2023/04/17/phillies-lineup-changes-matt-strahm/
Paul and Matt recap the Phillies' slow start and home opener festivities, with cheers for the sophomore batters and jeers for any pitcher's ability to throw strikes. Except for José Alvarado. He is precious.
The 2023 season is here, and hope is abundant. Projections, prognostications, and more from Paul and Matt as they get you set for 2023 Phillies baseball on Opening Day.
Logo and redesign by the wonderful Cailin Ann Giles. Philastrations on Etsy
They almost made it! With less than a week to go before Opening Day, an awful injury has hit the Phils as Rhys Hoskins has torn the ACL in his left knee. The impending free agent's future is in doubt, and the Phillies have some problems of their own to solve. Will the team make a move? Is it all up to the guys in-house? Paul and Matt walk through it all.
It's a bare-knuckle pugilist's paradise in the battle for the final spots on the Opening Day roster. Who's got the edge? What does the recent revelation of Bryce Harper's non-60-day IL placement really mean? How cool is it that Matt Strahm is going full-on Swiss Army Knife? And, oh yeah, how about that Trea Turner guy?
Paul and Matt check in one last time before the end of the spring to catch up on the latest and greatest from Clearwater.
While the feeling is it's likely the Phillies avoided catastrophe with Andrew Painter, the team is still awaiting the world's longest second opinion. While that happens, Bailey Falter slides into the driver's seat for SP5, Alec Bohm brings a clearer head to this year's slate of spring games, and the battle for the bench begins to heat up. Paul and Matt have you covered.
The offseason is truly over: Spring Training games are here! Paul and Matt get together on the eve of Saturday's split squad lid-lifter to go over the players they're most interested to see (non-Painter & co. edition), which players might see action and when ahead of the World Baseball Classic, and share a little bewilderment about the twists and turns in the Noah Song Saga.
The world's foremost The Last of Us recap podcast returns...only to be immediately hijacked by baseball talk. Spring is here, the Phillies are filing into camp, and the energy is just plain good. Paul and Matt revisit the recent contract extensions for José Alvarado and Seranthony Domínguez, and dive a bit more into the forthcoming Andrew Painter Saga (with only as much wet blanketing as is contractually mandated).
Matt's story on Andrew Painter: https://theathletic.com/4227439/2023/02/20/phillies-andrew-painter-brian-kaplan/
It's been a few weeks since we last checked in, and while that would normally mean there would be lots of news and moves to review...that's not the case! Josh Harrison is back, and that's about all that's really happened since early January.
What IS new, though, are the results of Matt's annual fan survey on The Athletic, published earlier this week. Paul and Matt go over some of their favorite answers, and the general feeling is this: Let the good times roll.
Check out the pre-2022 survey results here.
Happy new year! Paul and Matt are back to recap the past couple of weeks' moves, reassess the likely roster in the wake of those moves, and get set for the arbitration figure exchange deadline approaching at the end of the week.
Back in October (remember that month? Cool month), we asked for your position-by-position picks for the 2012-21 Phillies All-Drought Team. Who best represented the lean years, for you? We have the results! Plus an intro of Nola extension talk and possibilities, a new option for Cris Sánchez, and the overnight Carlos Correa news and its division impacts.
Paul and Matt revisit the action-packed Winter Meetings, survey the Phillies' situation in the wake of their deals (both confirmed and as-yet-unconfirmed), and go a little sicko mode on the Rule 5 Draft.
There it is: The Phillies (reportedly) get their man on the first full day of the Winter Meetings. The club agreed to terms on an 11-year, $300 million deal with the star shortstop, and Paul and Matt hopped back in the saddle to talk through it.
The short version? Feels good man.
Matt's back! And the Winter Meetings are in-person again! Paul and Matt set the stage for what could be a busy few days, with thoughts on the state of the free agent market and how it could and would affect the Phillies, as well as planning to recapture the innings lost from the departures of Zach Eflin and Kyle Gibson. Plus a little Rule 5 talk, which you might dig if you're a Level 3 sicko.
Bryce Harper's surgery, a POBO Dombo (we're calling him that, right?) extension, a trade that almost was, and a little Hall of Fame-ing.
Awards announcements have come and gone, with few surprises...except maybe that 5th-place finish for Rob Thomson. Some small roster moves (Johan Rojas, Sam Coonrod) and thoughts on Bryce Harper's path to and through elbow surgery later this month.
A (sort of) new shortstop has entered the Phillies rumor mill, a few minor moves on the 40-man fringe, and a contract extension for a member of the coaching staff.
Paul and Matt are up off the mat from the World Series loss and ready to dig into some offseason preview goodness. From money off the books to arbitration-eligibles to free agency plans to surprise trade candidates, they try and touch on all of it. Allllll of it.
Read Matt's offseason primer on The Athletic here: https://theathletic.com/3770215/2022/11/07/phillies-offseason-decisions-world-series/
After tough losses in Games 4 and 5, the Phillies must win two games on the road this weekend. Is there one more memorable push left in the tank? Paul and Matt channel all the positivity they can heading into a weekend of must-win baseball.
The World Series has shifted to the Phillies' favor after a dominant Game 3 win. Paul and Matt recap Ranger Suárez's ascent to Philly Legend status, the offense's preparation for and approach to Lance McCullers, Jr., and the pitching staff's alignment for the final two home games.
Does this feel familiar? After their third straight series with a 1-1 split on the road, the Phillies are back home for the final time this season. Paul and Matt take a quick look back at the weekend's drama before looking ahead to a Game 3 they hope will leave the Astros spooked.
Tonight, the Phillies start their final series of the year. All that's left between this unlikely group and baseball history are four wins against the best team in the American League: The Houston Astros. Paul and Matt hash out what the good outcomes for these first two games might look like, strategize about some pitcher usage, and give series picks-to-click.
Somehow, some way, the 2022 Phillies continue to make the unbelievable turn into reality. They will face the Houston Astros in the 2022 World Series. Paul (in full sultry laryngitis voice mode) and Matt catch up after the weekend's Games 4 and 5, revel in the moments, and wonder how this team really can pull off another improbable series win.
He had The Leap, now he's had His Game. Jean Segura backed up a strong effort by Ranger Suárez and the rest of the Phillies' bullpen with a huge two-run single to give the Phillies a lead they wouldn't relinquish, and a 2-1 NLCS lead ahead of Saturday's bulk bullpen game.
The NLCS's lone off day behind them, the Phils and Padres will get set to break their 1-1 tie in front of another riotous Citizens Bank Park crowd. Paul and Matt set things up for Friday and the weekend ahead.
Armed with a road split, the Phillies come home for three straight. FanGraphs's Michael Baumann (@MichaelBaumann) joins Paul to talk staying grounded, looking ahead to a weekend at home, and how the series could still be tipped in the Phillies' favor.
With their third chance in three series to take the first two games on the road coming up, the Phillies look to assert control of the NLCS. Paul and Matt look ahead to Wednesday's Game 2.
The Phillies steal another game on the road, this time to take a 1-0 lead in the NLCS. Zack Wheeler was brilliant, Bryce Harper cracked a homer for the third straight game, and Kyle Schwarber had his capital-m Moment with a monstrous 6th-inning blast that helped keep the Phils ahead for good. Paul is on for the quick recap and reaction.
The Phillies eliminate the Braves in 4 games, and will play for the NL Pennant. Yeah, sure, you saw THAT coming.
The Phillies bulldozed their way to a 3-1 series lead, with a few instantly memorable moments along the way. Paul and Matt recap and look ahead to a potential clinching Game 4, and the pitching strategy within.
The Phillies come home for two playoff games at home after a 1-1 split in Atlanta. Exactly what we all wanted, exactly how we wanted it...right? Paul and Matt look ahead to Game 3, the potential ugliness of Game 4, and try to piece together a pitching plan that could get this team through it all.
The Phillies steal one on the road in Atlanta in another white-knuckle thriller. Paul and Matt give a nod to Nick Castellanos's finest day as a member of the Phillies, a bullpen that (mostly) did the job, and the early turning of the tide in this series.
The Phillies are Wild Card Series winners! Paul and Matt (and what's left of their voices) look back on the weekend's games and the narratives that have changed, plus a quick look ahead to the upcoming Braves matchup in the NLDS.
The Phillies snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with a wild 9th inning, and are now 1 win away from their first playoff series win since 2010. Paul and Matt revisit the heroics from the Phillies' return to the postseason; a really good game of baseball.
They did it. They really did it. The Phillies are going to the playoffs!

So begins the road trip that will ultimately define this Phillies season. How long will it take them to clinch? How agonizing will it be along the way? If they manage to [redacted], will any of us ever recover? Looking forward (gulp) to surviving another week of Phillies baseball!
Michael Baumann (the FanGraphs writer, not the Orioles pitcher) joins Paul to cut through the pressure of the ever-tightening Wild Card race and look ahead to the season's final stretch. Recommended if you like the color green.

As promised, the bonus episodes begin now. With a 1-0 win over Atlanta (for the first time since the Aaron Harang Era), the Phillies moved their magic number to clinch a playoff spot to 10. A quick recap, plus plenty of praise for Zach Eflin.

Is the burden from the last 10 years, and the previous 4 in particular, too much to overcome right now? Is the thought of another Phillies (redacted) that overpowering? Paul and Matt, on the heels of another poor showing in Atlanta, work through why the fan base's feeling of this team, still very much in playoff position, feels like it's hanging by a thread. Plus: The "uniqueness" of this playoff push in Phillies history, the need for every little advantage, and one Phillies player who may be on an early Hall of Fame track.
The pendulum has swung back yet again, and the Phillies have wrapped up a 5-1 homestand. It's time to pay a little attention to the magic numbers to clinch (and how to calculate them) for the first time in a long time. Plus, Paul and Matt draft a playoff pitching staff and give props to the new offensive powerhouses in the lineup's 9-spot.
Scrub it from your brains. That Arizona/San Francisco road trip didn't happen. It's all about looking forward and ahead to be a big homestand, where the Phillies could re-pad their lead by taking games from the Marlins and Nationals. That should be the expectation, but will this truly be a new reality for the Phillies? Paul and Matt dig into the demons.
It's been a long time since the Phillies were an actual, literal playoff team. But they're in a great position at the end of August, so is it time to get more optimistic? How do we even go about doing that? Plus, yearning for a team at full health come October, and forgetting about the Mountain Time Zone.
So, that Mets series wasn't great...but it's also far from the end of the world. Paul and Matt try to explain why this past weekend's series doesn't mean the Phils are a total postseason pretender, and kick off the process of relearning what it's like to really root (no cheering in the press box) for a team that's in the playoffs.
The Good Phight's Ethan Witte joins Paul to look back at the week that was against the Mets and Reds, look ahead to their respective rematches, and wishcast an April 2023 that involves some fun starting pitching possibilities.
Paul and Matt, still feeling good for the moment, talk about the "Good Team + Bad Opponents" mix of the recent schedule and how that will change this week, the J.T. Realmuto revival, and the curious case of Bryson Stott.
Paul and Matt recap the Trade Deadline, from Robertson and Syndergaard and Marsh coming in, to Brown and Moniak and O'Hoppe heading out. How good should we feel about these moves? Did they do enough? Plus, what does this mean for the top trio of Abel, Painter, and McGarry now that they're staying put?
In their first post-All Star series, the Phillies were swept, at home, by the Cubs; Nick Castellanos was booed, then asked about it in a tense locker room interview (and post-interview) with NBC's Jim Salisbury; the offense and the 5th starter's spot each came up short; and we're still no closer to getting a good feel for what this team's trade deadline activity might look like. Things are going well at the moment.
Alright maybe not literally...but the Phillies' relief corps has been great, and a huge reason why they've stayed in the postseason hunt without Bryce Harper & co. Can they keep it up? Do they need help? How would we prioritize the team's trade needs, and whose first halves are we buying or selling?
All-Star selections are in, and the Phils have two pretty high-profile snubs accompanying their two electees. Will that matter? Plus, the trade deadline planning takes yet another turn as the starting rotation takes a couple of hits and the Phillies prep for running out a depleted roster in Toronto.
Paul and Matt dig deep on Didi, what it takes to keep players happy, Zack Wheeler's reinvented dominance, Matt Vierling as Ben Zobrist, and embracing the chaos of "why not?"
Bryce Harper is hurt. The season has changed. With 88 games left, and 5 weeks until the trade deadline, what comes next for these Phillies? Paul and Matt chat it out.

Paul and Matt dig into the near and far futures of second base and catcher, what it means to "win a game you shouldn't have," and the Wall of Fame.

Destiny Lugardo (@destiny_lugardo) of Phillies Nation and Leo Morgenstern (@morgensternmlb) of SI Phillies join Paul to bask in the glow of last weekend's Angels series before figuring out just how much to believe in this being the start of something great, and what needs to happen this month in order to keep it great (35 homers from Kyle Schwarber would be nice).

Phillies meme curator Ballin' (the pen name of Twitter's @inthephanattic) joins Paul to discuss her craft of Phillies content collection and creation, try to figure out why the "fun" element of these Phillies can sometimes go missing, and reveals the Beefy Boy of the Day in a pod exclusive (that has since been spoiled, but we're counting it).

Baseball Prospectus's Rob Orr (@NotTheBobbyOrr) joins the show to talk about his journey from the Phillies writing sphere to the national stage at BP, the Phillies' (mostly) successful 7-game road trip, and how we all can learn to love the Phils' prospect pipeline again.

Phillies Nation's Destiny Lugardo (@destiny_lugardo) pops by for a session on whether last week's Mets collapse "defines" the Phillies, the ever-tightening leash around Joe Girardi, looking forward to Rhys Hoskins's next slump breakout, and whether the West Coast road trip will be worth staying up for.

A quick bonus conversation with the Phillies front office leader on her rise from the Phillies blog world to one of the highest positions with the club. (Editor's note: Technical difficulties meant Paul needed to use a backup mic, which only kinda makes him sound like he's underwater.)

Paul and Matt relive the multiple personalities of last week's Rockies sweep and Mets series loss, try to reset their expectations for what a "good" offense is with this year's ball and run-scoring trends, and envision a time capsule to be opened in mid-June what Matt returns.

Matt and Paul revisit the infield situation (for the 4th, and definitely not last, time), come to some sort of grips on the inevitability of Ronald Torreyes and José Alvarado, and wonder how to get a request down to the batting practice DJ.

A rough first battle with divisional opponents leaves the Phils a bit bruised at 4-6, but bigger questions are lingering. When will Zack Wheeler be 100%? How soon is too soon to be making big lineup changes? And is Alec Bohm's fate really just to be another semi-failed Triple-A graduation?

A quick bonus hit as Paul wraps up this round of listener-submitted over/unders that were cut for time in episode 3.
Paul and Matt tackle some tweeted over/unders, picture a full season that goes (mostly) right, and approach physical illness at the mention of John Lannan.
Staying in step with Hollywood's biggest night, Paul and Matt contemplate who could be the 2022 Phillies' Best Actor, Supporting Actor, and more. And of course, no award show would be complete without an afterparty, where third base continues to be the hot topic among the VIPs.
There's a whiff of hope in the air around Clearwater and the greater Philadelphia area. The Phillies have made some big moves, and are all-in on an offense-heavy roster for this season. Can they conjure up memories of the 2007 team's offensive barrage, or will a lack of depth eventually do them in?
