TUESDAYS WITH TERRY: Protect College Sports Act, PHD’s & City College Bachelor Degrees Sep 30, 2026
    Show notes

The Wall Street Journal reports that the proposed Protect College Sports Act is a federal effort to create nationwide rules for college athletics as schools, athletes, conferences, and lawmakers grapple with the rapidly changing world of NIL (name, image, and likeness) compensation and athlete payments.

The growing shortage of academic jobs for Ph.D. graduates is not just a crisis, but a sign that higher education is producing more doctorates than the academic job market can absorb. For years universities have trained large numbers of Ph.D. students even as the number of tenure-track professorships has stagnated or declined. As a result, many graduates face temporary positions, lower-paying jobs, or careers outside academia.

A pair of new California laws will allow the California Community Colleges system to offer up to 12 new bachelor's degree programs each year, expanding beyond the limited number previously allowed. The goal is to help fill workforce shortages in high-demand fields where four-year degree programs may be limited or unavailable.

TUESDAYS WITH TERRY: FUSD’s Budget, a Pit Viper & 3D Printed Protein Sep 30, 2026
    Show notes

In an opinion piece, Miguel Arias argues that Fresno Unified School District is effectively "robbing Peter to pay Paul" by moving money between funds and relying on one-time resources to cover ongoing expenses. The article questions the district's long-term financial strategy amid budget pressures.

The man who reported seeing a large venomous snake in his Santa Ana backyard has confessed that he made up the story and admitted that the photo he showed neighbors and police of the viper was AI-generated.

LIBRARY: Fresno Leaders Concerned About Library Privatization Sep 29, 2026
    Show notes

Lindsay Clancy is set to return to court for the first time since her murder trial ended in a mistrial after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict. The hearing comes as Clancy's attorneys continue pushing to investigate the lone holdout juror and seek dismissal of the case. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will retry Clancy.

Fresno County leaders and library supporters are raising concerns as county officials explore the possibility of outsourcing management of the Fresno County Public Library system to a private company. County officials say they're reviewing options as they look for ways to manage costs and improve operations.

GUNS: Newsom Signs New California Gun Law Sep 29, 2026
    Show notes

Gov. Newsom is allowing winter-blend gasoline to be sold early to help lower prices. How much do you think this will actually save drivers?

A new California law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom will require most prospective gun buyers to complete a firearms safety course before purchasing a gun. The requirement is set to take effect in 2027. Gun-rights groups argue the requirement creates an additional barrier for law-abiding citizens.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law banning the sale of single-use, battery-powered nicotine vapes in California to address litter, pollution, and battery-fire risks. The law applies to tobacco/nicotine disposable vapes, but does not include cannabis vape devices.

COLLEGE: Colleges Cutting Tuition As Families Push Back On Rising Costs Sep 29, 2026
    Show notes

The WSJ art Some colleges are cutting tuition as families push back on rising costsicle highlights a shift in higher education: instead of automatically raising tuition every year, some colleges are lowering sticker prices or redesigning financial-aid strategies to attract cost-conscious families. The move reflects growing concern about affordability, student debt, and the value students receive for the price of a college degree.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT: Election Denier Kurt Olsen Resigned from DOJ Sep 29, 2026
    Show notes

The BBC story covered a Walmart patent for an internet-connected shopping trolley capable of tracking items, displaying information, and potentially simplifying checkout. It was an example of how major retailers were experimenting with smart-store technology, although a patent filing alone did not guarantee the system would ultimately be deployed in stores.

Kurt Olsen, a prominent figure in efforts to challenge the 2020 election results, has resigned from the Justice Department. He had been working in the Southern District of Florida on a high-profile investigation targeting Obama- and Biden-era officials, a probe that has not yet resulted in charges. His departure follows other personnel changes on the same investigative team.
