Dedeaux Download: USC baseball still in the hunt after series win vs. Oregon; hitting coach Travis Jewett joins the show May 09, 2023
    Show notes

In this edition of the Dedeaux Download podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith break down USC baseball's big series win against No. 17 Oregon despite Friday starter Tyler Stromsborg initially being pushed back to Sunday and then ultimately being scratched altogether.

But before the guys discuss the Trojans to rallying for a big Pac-12 series win against Oregon to breathe a little life back into their postseason hopes, a special guest joins the podcast. USC hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Travis Jewett comes on the Dedeaux Download to talk about how the Trojans were able to bounce back after struggling at Washington last weekend and losing a pair of midweek games for their longest losing streak of the season (five games).

Jewett also talks a lot about the Trojans' hitting philosophy of getting back to the midline and what type of adjustments they do and do not make in two-strike and/or two-out situations. He breaks down how USC was able to handle a stretch where it got a lot of hits but struggled to come through with the clutch hits with runners on base.

After a hearty conversation with Jewett, Shotgun and Jack break down all the action from the last two weeks of play, including looking at where the 27-20-1 Trojans stand in the Pac-12, sitting in third place with two regular-season weekends remaining. They also look at USC's national RPI and what the Trojans chances of making the NCAA tournament are looking like.

Shotgun and Jack also discuss the upcoming week with the Trojans taking on Cal State Bakersfield at Dedeaux Field on Tuesday before welcoming in Arizona State for a crucial weekend series for both teams.

Tunnel Vision: Wild weekend for Trojan athletics with major commitments & a national championship May 08, 2023
    Show notes

On this edition of Sunday night Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Chris Trevino and Shotgun Spratling team up to talk about what was a very eventful weekend for the USC athletics department.

On the football front head coach Lincoln Riley landed another highly ranked player out of the NCAA Transfer Portal in former Alabama four-star defensive back Tre'Quon Fegans. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Fegans took an official visit to USC over the weekend and announced his commitment Sunday morning over social media. Fegans was rated as a cornerback out of high school but he brings the versatility to play safety or the nickel position for USC's defense. Soon after the elder Fegans committed to USC his younger brother Lott Trophy luncheon also picked the Trojans. Anquon Fegans is the top ranked safety in the 2025 recruiting class. The Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson product comes in at 6-foot-1 and 180-pounds and is Riley's first commitment for 2025.

On the basketball side head coach Andy Enfield landed one of the biggest name prospects out there when Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon Bronny James announced he would be attending USC. The son of NBA all-time scoring leader LeBron James is the No. 26 ranked prospect in the class of 2023 and picked the Trojans over Ohio State and Oregon. The 6-foot-3 combo guard joins a recruiting class that includes the No. 1 prospect in the country, Isaiah Collier of Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler.

USC baseball had been in a bit of a slump but got a great series win over a nationally ranked Oregon squad, keeping their postseason hopes alive.

The USC women's beach volleyball squad won an exciting 3-2 match against rival UCLA to win the national championship. The Bruins were the No. 1 seed and had defeated the Women of Troy at the Pac-12 Championships last week. But head coach Dain Blanton's squad came to play on Sunday, earning the upset win and completing the three-peat with their third-straight national championship.

This is a podcast version of our video show Tunnel Vision that you can find on our Facebook or YouTube pages.

Emergency Heard It Podcast: Bronny James commits to USC May 07, 2023
    Show notes

In this EMERGENCY edition of the Heard It on the Sidelines Podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family, Shotgun Spratling and USCfootball.com basketball intern Adam Jasper link up remotely to talk about the breaking news that Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon five-star combo guard Bronny James, the son of Lakers' star LeBron James, has committed to USC basketball.

The guys give their instant reaction to hearing about Bronny's commitment to join Andy Enfield's squad and discuss the star power that will be on campus next year with the Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, the No. 1 high school boys basketball player in Isaiah Collier, the No. 1 high school girls basketball player in JuJu Watkins and then the most high-profile high school kid in the nation in James all being on campus together.

Then they break down what impact James joining the Trojans will have on the team, the expectations, the crowd atmosphere and the aura of the program. Shotgun and Adam also break down Bronny's game and how he fits into a USC roster adding point guard Isaiah Collier and bringing back Boogie Ellis but losing Drew Peterson, Reese Dixon-Waters and Tre White.

To close out the emergency podcast, the guys look at whether USC basketball should be the favorites to win their first Pac-12 regular-season title in nearly 40 years and what kind of NCAA tournament run should be expected from Enfield, Collier, Ellis, James and the rest of the Trojans.

Coach Harvey Hyde on the Trojans in the NFL Draft and the NCAA Transfer Portal window closing May 01, 2023
    Show notes

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back breaking down how the former Trojan football players fared in the 2023 NFL Draft. Day one of the draft was an exciting one for sure with three quarterbacks selected in the first four picks and two running backs going before the first wide receiver was selected. At pick No. 20 Seattle selected Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, starting a historic 4-pick run of wide receivers that included Minnesota snagging USC wide receiver Jordan Addison with the 23rd pick.

With the selection of Addison, USC has had a first-round pick in the last four drafts and in six of the last seven years. This is the 22nd consecutive year -- the longest active streak for any college -- a Trojan has been selected in the top three rounds.

On the second day of the draft two more former USC football players came off the board. In the second round with the 54th selection the Los Angeles Chargers picked defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu, allowing the nation's sack leader to stay home in LA to start his NFL career. Standout USC cornerback Mekhi Blackmon was taken with the No. 102 overall pick to close out the third round. He joins former teammate Jordan Addison in Minnesota.

The third day of the draft had one more Trojan go off the board. The Baltimore Ravens selected Andrew Vorhees No. 229 overall, using their seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on the powerful offensive lineman who tore his ACL during the NFL Combine.

Several players also signed as undrafted free agents after the draft. Defensive lineman Brandon Pili signed with the Miami Dolphins, offensive lineman Bobby Haskins signed with the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Terrell Bynum signed with the Los Angeles Chargers and running back Travis Dye signed with the New York Jets. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler also reported that tight end Josh Falo was invited to Jets rookie minicamp.

Dedeaux Download: USC baseball wins rivalry series with walk off vs. UCLA; pitching coach Seth Etherton joins the show Apr 25, 2023
    Show notes

In this edition of the Dedeaux Download podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith break down USC baseball's big series win in the Crosstown Showdown against a ranked UCLA team, which featured Cole Gabrielson hitting a ball over the right fielder for a walk-off winner in the bottom of the ninth inning.

After struggling at Oregon State last weekend, the Trojans got back on track with a midweek defeat of CSUN. Then against the Bruins, USC rallied back after losing the series opener to earn a big series win. Shotgun and Jack break down all the action with Jack giving his first-hand account of the vibrant crowd.

The hosts then look at where the 24-14-1 Trojans stand in the Pac-12, having moved into a tie for third place. They also look at USC's national RPI and what the Trojans chances of making the NCAA tournament are looking like. Trojans add a monster from the portal, former five-star DT Bear Alexander Apr 24, 2023
    Show notes

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back in studio LIVE talking about the huge news for the Trojans that broke over the weekend with former five-star defensive tackle Bear Alexander announcing that he will become a Trojan. Coming off a national championship season at Georgia, Alexander recently entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and from the jump USC was one of the top schools he was considering. On Sunday Trojan football fans got the good news that the next stop for Bear would be Los Angeles, helping to bolster a position of need for head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.

Alexander took an official visit to USC and apparently that was enough to convince the 6-foot-3, 315 pound defensive lineman to become a Trojan. He is the No. 12 player in the portal and the No. 1 defensive lineman according to 247Sports transfer rankings. He is also the fourth defensive lineman added to the roster this off-season, following Anthony Lucas (Texas A&M), Kyon Barrs (Arizona) and Jack Sullivan (Purdue).

The guys also discuss what Riley had to say in his post spring Zoom call with the media late last week. He goes over the backup quarterback situation, the depth situation on the defensive line, what he liked about the run game, the ups and downs he saw from the defense, the rush end spot and lots more.

They will also talk about the college football rule changes and how that could impact the Trojans, a new commitment for the 2024 recruiting class and the hype around the Colorado spring game with Coach Prime.

Dedeaux Download: USC baseball's Andy Stankiewicz on trying to bounce back from rough weekend Apr 19, 2023
    Show notes

In this edition of the Dedeaux Download podcast, part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith break down the most recent week of action and look forward to an upcoming week of action that includes the Crosstown Showdown being played at Dedeaux Field.

The Trojans are coming off a week where they extended their win streak to five games with a midweek defeat of Cal State Fullerton, but that streak was brought to a halt in Corvallis at the hands of Oregon State, who swept USC in three tightly contested games

A special guest joins the show as USC head coach Andy Stankiewicz comes on to talk about what went wrong at Goss Stadium and what he and his coaching staff must do to help the Trojans bounce back from a rough weekend. Stankiewicz also previews the upcoming rivalry series with UCLA and talks about his favorite rivalry moment from his playing days -- Yankees vs Red Sox on opening day.

Shotgun and Jack then recap the Trojans' week, which started with a 4-3 win over Cal State Fullerton in the midweek and then a weekend series at Oregon State where missed opportunities cost USC, especially in a 3-2 loss in 13 innings on Saturday.

The hosts then look at where the 20-13-1 Trojans stand in the Pac-12 standings and in the national RPI. They also discuss the upcoming week with the Trojans taking on CSUN at Dedeaux Field on Tuesday before hosting UCLA in Stankiewicz's first Crosstown Showdown series at Dedeaux.
