Trojans trying to finish strong with an upset victory over No. 5 Notre Dame Nov 26, 2024
    Show notes

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio for a holiday week edition of the Peristyle Podcast that will also serve as our game preview Tunnel Vision show this week. USC is coming off its 19-13 win over UCLA in the Rose Bowl where the team had the flu. The victory was important for a number of reasons, the rivalry with the Bruins, getting back the Victory Bell and of course becoming bowl eligible. But the level of play wasn't great, with both teams looking like they were ready to give the game to the other side at any moment.

The Trojans will need to play a much better brand of football this weekend to have a chance to take down the Fighting Irish in the Coliseum. Notre Dame has won 9 games in a row and are blowing teams out with regularity. The guys talk about this important matchup and what USC would need to do to get the upset win and knock the Irish out of the College Football Playoffs picture.

Helium Boys: USC runs L.A., No. 5 Notre Dame comes to town & Thanksgiving Mount Rushmore Nov 26, 2024
    Show notes

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino returnbehind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down the Trojans becoming bowl eligible after a come-from-behind 19-13 victory over UCLA at the Rose Bowl that pushes USC back above .500 at 6-5. They also look forward, giving their thoughts on another rivalry matchup as the Trojans take on No. 5 Notre Dame Saturday in the Coliseum

The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun going stream of consciousness after Chris uses his 'Two-Minute Drill' to discuss the grind this season has been and offer a correction and apology for a mistake he made last year.

Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Fourth-down stops are discussed after USC had three, including on each of the final two UCLA offensive drives. Makai Lemon and his dynamic efforts as a receiver, returner and even passer very obviously make the list as do the continued efforts of Trojan punter Eddie Czaplicki. Shotgun also brings up the major improvements in USC's tackling under the first-year defensive staff. On the flip side, the Trojans' saw issues in the red zone, having to settle for field goals three times after being inside the UCLA 5-yard line.

After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing Duce Robinson's usage and the possibility of Lincoln Riley relinquishing offensive coordinator duties. There are also several Thanksgiving-related questions. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans, the state of Indiana and then Thanksgiving preparation.

Coach Harvey Hyde on the Trojans victory over the Bruins in the Rose Bowl Nov 25, 2024
    Show notes

On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing the late Saturday night clash in the Rose Bowl between crosstown rivals USC and UCLA. The stakes for this game weren't as high as both programs would have hoped, but a chance to play in the postseason, the Victory Bell and of course Los Angeles bragging rights were still on the line for the Trojans and the Bruins.

Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on USC's 19-13 victory over UCLA, evaluating how quarterback Jayden Maiava performed and how the Trojan offense did overall against the Bruins defense. He also goes in-depth on the performance of D'Anton Lynn's defense, holding UCLA to just 13 points and denying all three 4th down conversion attempts for the Bruins.

The now bowl eligible Trojans have one tough test remaining, a visit from No. 5 Notre Dame Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum. The guys talk about the opportunity for USC to match last year's regular season total of 7 wins and potentially knock the Fighting Irish out of the College Football Playoffs.

Tunnel Vision: The Trojans secure the Victory Bell with a 19-13 win over UCLA Nov 25, 2024
    Show notes

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith and Ryan Abraham are back from a late night in the Rose Bowl where they witnessed USC's first ever Big Ten road victory, taking down crosstown rival UCLA 19-13. It wasn't the prettiest game in recent memory, but head coach Lincoln Riley and the team will take the conference win regardless. The Trojans are now 6-5 and bowl eligible with an opportunity to knock Notre Dame out of a playoff berth next week in the Coliseum.

This was a far from perfect performance by the Trojans, only scoring one touchdown while struggling in the red zone and allowing over 100 yards rushing to a UCLA squad that struggled to run the football this season. But USC did shutout the Bruins in the 4th quarter and closed out the game on a high note, outscoring UCLA 10-0 in that final period. New quarterback Jayden Maiava didn't turn the ball over and give the Bruins easy scores like he did last week against Nebraska, despite having a flu outbreak on team throughout the week leading up to the game.

The guys talk about some of the issues they had with this game including some of the play calling, specifically in the red zone where USC kept throwing low percentage fade routes from inside the 5-yard line instead of just handing the ball off to the offensive MVP Woody Marks (Of the 9 plays the Trojans ran inside the UCLA 5-yard line, Marks only got one touch).

Despite having no turnovers and amazing starting field position of USC's own 42 yard line, the Trojans could only put up 19 points, easily the worst offensive performance of the season. Luckily the other side of the ball may have played its best game, picking up three sacks on Ethan Garbers and only allowing 13 points while ending the game forcing two straight four-and-outs.

    Show notes

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") take a deep look at this rivalry game between USC and UCLA, two programs that reside in the same city and square off each season for the right to hold the Victory Bell for the next year. The Trojans preparation for this game has been impacted by a bout of the flu, something Lincoln Riley, who was sick himself, addressed this week.

The guys dive into the matchups between these two programs including former Bruins D'Anton Lynn, Kyle Ford, Kamari Ramsey and John Humphrey now playing and coaching on the other side of this rivalry and how their presence could have an impact on the game.

Triple-Double Podcast: Assistant Wendale Farrow joins the show to preview Women of Troy showdown with Notre Dame Nov 21, 2024
    Show notes

The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle Podcast's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) previewing No. 3 USC women's basketball's showdown with No. 6 Notre Dame and breaking down the last week and a half of action at the Galen Center where the Women of Troy broke records and the USC men suffered their first loss in the Eric Musselman era.

Also special guest USC women's assistant coach Wendale Farrow joins the show to chat about the upcoming matchup with the Fighting Irish and discuss what the coaching staff has learned the first two and a half weeks of the season. He also talks about how sophomore sensation JuJu Watkins balances her work on the court along with everything that comes with her superstar status off the court and gives a scouting report on new USC five-star signee Jazzy Davidson.

Shotgun and Connor look at where the men and women's programs stand after the first two and a half weeks of play and preview the upcoming weekend of action at the Galen Center. The Women of Troy welcome No. 6 Notre Dame with its own sophomore sensation in Hannah Hidalgo along with multiple other potential first-round picks.

Helium Boys Podcast: USC-UCLA showdown, Nebraska goes down in Jayden Maiava's first start and jorts Nov 21, 2024
    Show notes

Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino returnbehind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down the Trojans getting back to .500 with a 28-20 win over Nebraska in UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava's first start in cardinal and gold. The podcasters also look forward, giving their thoughts on the upcoming matchup against UCLA.

The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun talking about his excitement about the rivalry game set to take plae this weekend. Chris then takes the 'Two-Minute Drill' reins to discuss some of the traditions missing from his coverage of practices leading up to Saturday's Crosstown Showdown and how Kyle Ford brought back some fire with his mentality about facing off against his former team.

Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. The way the ball comes off Maiava's hand and his velocity is discussed as well as an unprecedented streak of good fortune that was bestowed upon the Trojans against the Cornhuskers after having only bad luck for much of this season. Play calling and the run game headed by running back Woody Marks after his career-best performance also get a positive review as do defensive linemen Elijah Hughes and Kameryn Fountain along with others. On the flip side, the Trojans' saw issues with their health after an outbreak of flu cases cut through the locker room. The return and departure of Jacobe Covington as well as the limited playing time of Ja'Kobi Lane are also focused upon in the Stock Down portion.

After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing Anthony Lucas, Zachariah Branch and Lane. There are also recruiting and hypothetical retention inquiries, and a fun question about who could/should become USC's new Big Ten rival. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans and then the viability of some famous people wearing jorts.

Heading into rivalry week the Trojans are fighting on through the flu Nov 20, 2024
    Show notes

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the badly needed victory over Nebraska and the successful debut of quarterback Jayden Maiava. The victory brings USC to 5-5 with a victory needed over UCLA or Notre Dame to secure a bowl game.

First up, the Trojans are heading to the Rose Bowl to take on crosstown rival UCLA. The Bruins had won three-straight in the Big Ten including two on the road before falling to Washington on Friday. In the off-season Lincoln Riley stepped up the stakes in rivalry by hiring away defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn and signing safety Kamari Ramsey, cornerback John Humphrey and wide receiver Kyle Ford.

USC's preparation for the game has been impacted by a bout of the flu that has spread through the players and coaches. On Tuesday Riley addressed the media, talking about what he and the team have been going through this week and the hope that they will be fine by Saturday night.

The guys also talk about some of the interesting matchups between the Trojans and the Bruins and give their thoughts on how this one will play out.

Tunnel Vision: Recapping USC's 28-20 win over Nebraska plus left tackle Elijah Paige joins the show Nov 18, 2024
    Show notes

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Jack Smith are in studio recapping how the Trojans got an important 28-20 victory over Nebraska and the positive first start for UNLV transfer quarterback Jayden Maiava. After losing four of the last five games, the Trojans were able to get back on the right track and finished the game strong against the Cornhuskers. Now USC just needs one win over rival UCLA or Notre Dame to become bowl eligible and get an extra couple of weeks of practice to help prepare this team for next season.

On the defensive side of the ball the Trojans really played well, allowing only 13 points to the Nebraska offense and only 10 points that were not the direct result of USC turnovers.

Before the guys give their thoughts on the game, they welcome in the USC left tackle Elijah Paige who played one of his best games against Nebraska, helping Woody Marks run for 146 yards and allow Maiava to complete over 71% of his passes.

The interview with Paige was conducted in conjunction with House of Victory, an alumni-backed nonprofit collective dedicated to providing a competitive edge in the NIL space for University of Southern California student-athletes.

If you want to help out USC's NIL efforts, you can donate to House of Victory here.
