How do you know if you're a parent who suffers from religious trauma? If your goal is to raise children with healthy spirituality then, first, you have to acknowledge and address your own spiritual wounds and religious trauma. It is one of the biggest challenges to cultivating healthy spirituality for our children.

This is why I am excited to be launching a brand-new series. The series, Parenting After Religious Trauma, works to provide listeners with information, tools, and resources to unpack and work through religious trauma. 062: Parenting with Spiritual Triggers & Glimmers with Cindy Wang Brandt Feb 17, 2020
    Show notes

Today on the show I share five spiritual triggers and glimmers that are commonly experienced in parenting, specifically when you have a history of spiritual trauma. Most of us know what triggers are—something that activates an unwelcome response. I recently learned of the term glimmers which is the opposite of triggers. A glimmer is an event that activates a welcome response—a light and airy feeling which brings joy instead of pain.

And while glimmers do sound delightful, they are no more valuable than triggers. Here on the podcast, and within the Parenting Forward community, we validate every emotion—including anger, pain, happiness, and sadness.

I will be sharing five spiritual triggers that are commonly present in parenting scenarios plus five spiritual glimmers that may come up in parenting. I hope you resonate with today’s topic and you will use these examples to help you become self-aware when these events happen in your own parenting.

Trigger Warning Notice: This episode discusses five specific spiritual triggers. If you are working through spiritual trauma or think you may be triggered by this topic, please feel free to skip this episode. For official diagnosis and treatment of trauma or mental health always consult a medical or healthcare professional. I am not a licensed therapist, therefore, the content shared in this podcast comes from my own experiences and reflections.

    Show Highlights:

    • Five spiritual triggers that can come up when parenting including several examples.
    • Acknowledging we are parenting differently than our parents did, we want different outcomes for our kids, and recognizing sometimes the outcomes can trigger us.
    • Five different ways I have experienced spiritual glimmers.
    • One specific glimmer I believe is the most healing to a spiritually traumatized person.

061: Changing the Myth of Motherhood w/ Lyz Lenz & Amy Sullivan Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

Parenting and progressive faith are not monolithic in any way. There are many different paths of parenting and I am fascinated by the many ways people do it. Author Lyz Lenz and podcast host Amy Sullivan join me to share their views on changing the myth of motherhood, parenting, and progressive faith. Lyz is the author of Belabored: A Vindication of the Rights of Pregnant Women. Amy is an author and co-hosts Impolite Company, a podcast about politics and religion. Both Lyz and Amy share how they parent and what role faith plays in their parenting.

Together we talk about how every topic with our children is one surrounded by faith, what it means to be a mother in America today, and the importance of recognizing we are women outside of being mothers, and we must honor this part of us too. It was such an honor to have both Lyz and Amy as my guests. I hope you enjoy our conversation!

    Show Highlights:

    • The larger conversation is not just about parenting but about how we pass faith onto our children plus some ways Lyz and Amy incorporate faith into their parenting.
    • Amy’s experience parenting a child as part of an interfaith family and what that looks like for her.
    • Some trends of how people are changing the way they parent and faith.
    • How the concept of children being moral beings is a new phenomenon.
    • Recognizing we are our own beings who have our own lives and some ways in which you can work to strike a balance between motherhood and being your own person.
    • How Lyz’s book Belabored works to decipher between the mythologies of motherhood and what it means to be a mother in America today.
