How to stop bullying, with author Izzy Kalman - episode 187 Jun 07, 2019

Encore Episode: School's out! (Almost) May 31, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to an encore episode of Parenting Bytes! We couldn't get our schedules together to record this week, so we reached deep into the archives (I mean, this was all the way back when Amy Ever After was Selfish Mom!).

This episode first aired four years ago, and I can't believe how current it seems (well, except for the very end--are you still as enthusiastic about a Biden presidential run, Rebecca?).

One link, an article I wrote for the now-defunct Lifetime Moms website, no longer exists. And one has been updated: lunch is now free for all NYC public school kids, not just middle schoolers as we discussed in the segment about school lunch debt!

Everything else in the school shaming segment is still, sadly, relevant. Schools are still finding ways to embarrass kids for being poor, and it's disgusting.

    What is lunch shaming?

School lunch shaming is when a school punishes students because their parents are behind in their school lunch payments. Sometimes the school will deny the student the normal hot lunch that everyone else is getting, and instead give them a cheaper bagged lunch, what we call the cheese sandwich of shame. Other times, they will simply deny the child food, which should be illegal. We go into it in the episode, and it's infuriating.

And then, there's the whole other issue of policing what parents are packing in their kids' lunches, and shaming them for that, sometimes even throwing out food!

But on a happier note, it's also time to give teacher gifts here in NYC! We realize that for many of you, the school year is over, and we think that's just crazy, because we still have just shy of four weeks to go.

We've got some unique ideas for personalized teacher gifts, themed teacher gift baskets, and of course some inexpensive thank you gift ideas, because all of this end-of-the-year stuff can get expensive!

We also recognize that presents for teachers can be a sticky subject in some schools, depending on what the gift-giving rules are, so we also have some advice on how to give a class gift in the fairest way possible.

And for those of you who are done and already enjoying summer break? Just tuck these links away for next year, because if they're still good links four years later, you can bet they'll still be good in five!

All The Rage: even the best husbands aren't pulling their weight - episode 186 May 24, 2019
    Show notes

We’re so fortunate to have author Darcy Lockman on the show this week to talk about her new book, All The Rage: Mothers, Fathers, and the Myth of Equal Partnership. In her book Darcy talks about gender equality and why we just don’t have it. Women’s work is valued less, and even when women make more money, men still aren’t doing their share of housework and childcare.

In addition to being an author, Darcy is a clinical psychologist who works with couples and individuals in New York City.

Advice on how to get a pet, from the experts - episode 185 May 17, 2019
    Show notes

So you want to get a pet, but are wondering how to integrate kids and pets. Or, you’re not sure what kind of pet to get, where to get one, or what it will cost. We’re tackling those questions and so many more with the help of two pet experts: Dr. Katy Nelson of The Pet Show, and Dana Humphrey, The Pet Lady!

    Kids and pets
Whether you’re looking to add a pet to kids you already have or a kid to pets you already have, there are a lot of factors to consider. The benefits of having a dog for kids can be huge, but so is the responsibility, time, and financial commitment! We invited a couple of pet experts on our podcast to help us sort out what to do and how to do it.

    Dr. Katy Nelson
We started with Dr. Katy Nelson, who is a veterinarian and also the host of The Pet Show. She tackled some great pet questions, like

    • Should you get a rescue dog?
    • How much does a dog cost over it’s entire life?
    • Should you get pet health insurance?
    • How much of a commitment are smaller pets, like rabbits or birds?
    • Do you need to pet-proof your house or apartment?
    • Should you crate train your dog?
    • Should you hire a trainer?
    • Is grain-free dog food better?

    From Dr. Katy’s bio:

Dr Katy Nelson is the host and executive producer of “The Pet Show with Dr. Katy” on Washington DC’s WJLA, as well as an associate veterinarian at the Belle Haven Animal Medical Center in Alexandria, VA. She serves as an expert on animal health on Washington DC’s All News Radio Station, WTOP News, as well as on Washington DC’s ABC affiliate WJLA ABC 7. She has been featured on the TODAY Show, Fox & Friends, Sirius XM, NPR, CNBC, The Meredith Vieira Show, HuffPost Live, and is the expert for the second season of the popular show “Unlikely Animal Friends” on NatGeo Wild.

Dr. Katy is the Medical Director of Pet Health for Stop Aging Now, and has her own line of all-natural pet health supplements called Charlie’s Choice. She is a frequent contributor to Family Circle Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Cheddar TV, HuffPost Pets, BarkPost, and is featured in over 200 pet health videos on PetMD.

    Dana Humphrey, “The Pet Lady”
Next we talked with Dana Humphrey, who goes by “The Pet Lady,” about how to find the breed you want, teaching children to be gentle with pets, pets and newborn babies, and what you need to have at home for your new dog. From Dana’s bio:

Meet “The Pet Lady,” Dana Humphrey. She happily wears many collars in the pet industry, including operating the very successful Whitegate PR firm, staging pet fashion events, and educating all of us pet lovers about the must-have pet products and pet trends. And, though her home base is in New York City, this is a gal who travels coast-to-coast and beyond to ensure pets everywhere lead enriching lives.

SPIKE Prime: A fun new way for schools to teach STEAM, with LEGO! - episode 181 Apr 05, 2019
    Show notes

Episode 181: SPIKE Prime – A fun new way for schools to teach STEAM, with LEGO!

The three Parenting Bytes hosts took a field trip this week to the unveiling of a new STEAM project-based learning tool from LEGO Education, called SPIKE Prime. LEGO Education recognizes that STEAM activities for middle schoolers are fraught with issues, such as most robotics clubs being opt-in type activities that happen after school, and not enough teacher training available to make classroom STEAM lessons with robotics viable in many schools. To help combat these issues, SPIKE Prime was designed from the ground up to work within classrooms, giving teachers everything they need to lead a comprehensive lesson that be taught within a 45-minute period.

After the launch announcement, we had a great discussion with Marianne Bach, who was one of the key people on this product’s development and spoke to us passionately about the importance of the “A” in STEAM (art), how SPIKE Prime was designed specifically for the classroom, and how you can help get it into your child’s school.

We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did, and thanks so much to LEGO Education for inviting us to the launch!
