Rock's Backpages 127: Chris Roberts on Radiohead + Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott May 18, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode we are joined by the droll and charming Chris Roberts, who looks back on his career as a journalist, author and musician.

Chris recalls the seminal early experience of first hearing T. Rex's 'Metal Guru' and explains how this led eventually to his writing for Sounds and then Melody Maker in the '80s. After detours via the ill-fated Ikon magazine and the fascinating Idle Worship anthology, we get to Chris' Uncut years and hear an audio clip of him being very cheeky to Debbie Harry. This brings us up to the present day and the publication of his fine new study of the Velvet Underground.

We then turn to the week's featured artist, the divine Missy Elliott, and discuss her 25-year-old debut Supa Dupa Fly, reviewed by Chris for the Maker — and the "Misdemeanor" gal's amazing career in general. Another album turning 25 is Radiohead's towering OK Computer, which affords the perfect excuse to hear clips from not one but two audio interviews — the first with Thom Yorke and Colin Greenwood from 1993, the second with Phil Selway from 1997, shortly after OK Computer's release. Chris reminisces about two Radiohead shows he saw, including a Royal Festival Hall gig he reviewed in 2000.

Mark then runs through the articles he's most enjoyed adding during the previous fortnight, including pieces about the Ronettes, the Impressions, Ray Parker, Jr. and A Guy Called Gerald. Jasper finishes things off with remarks about interviews with Fall Out Boy and Grandmaster Flash.

Many thanks to special guest Chris Roberts. His new book The Velvet Underground is published by Palazzo and available now.

Pieces discussed: Debbie Harry audio, Chris on Supa Dupa Fly, Missy Elliott, Radiohead audio: Thom Yorke & Colin Greenwood and Phil Selway, The Ronettes, John Mayall, Stonewall riots, Popol Vuh, Guy Called Gerald, The Impressions, Ray Parker Jr., Fall Out Boy, Grandmaster Flash and Ayo.

No Filler Rewind: Jimmy Eat World - Clarity May 18, 2022
    Show notes

Another rewind episode? What are you guys on vacation or something? Yes. Yes we are.

Now considered a touchstone record of the emo genre, we take a look at Jimmy Eat World's 1999 classic Clarity, and how the sound they were perfecting ushered us into the third wave of emo music. Before that we go all the way back to the spring of 1985 in Washington D.C. to explore the origins of emo, and discuss how difficult the genre is to define.

Shout It Out Loudcast: Crazy Nights May 18, 2022
    Show notes

This week Tom & Zeus review the 14th studio album from KISS, the 1987 keyboard heavy, "Crazy Nights." The album went platinum and was the highest charting KISS album in the 1980's landing at number 18 on the US Billboard charts.

This is the 2nd album featuring the lineup of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick. Although Kiss was not as popular as they were in the 1970's, this new non-makeup version was keeping pace with current hard rock trends.

Crazy Nights had two of three singles chart and the three videos for the singles all were on heavy rotation on MTV. The album has received a lot of negative feedback from the KISS Army due to the abundance of keyboards and synthesizers.

KISS brought in the highly sought Ron Nevison to produce the album. The band hoped Nevison's recent success would translate to KISS. Many of KISS' favorite outside songwriters returned as well, like Desmond Child, Diane Warren, Mitch Weissman and SIOL favorite, Adam Mitchell.

As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always they then rank the album and the album cover against the previous KISS studio albums reviewed.

So comb your Paul Stanley chest hair and grab your Paul Stanley thong and let's Turn On The Night!

Love That Album Podcast 157: Interview with Prescott Niles of The Knack May 17, 2022
    Show notes

It's the tail end of the 70s, and top 40 music is heavily leaning to disco and AOR. Sure there's plenty of other things out there, but the charts point not only to disco artists, but pop singers jumping on board the disco train (Barbara Streisand, Kiss, Paul McCartney and Wings).

Then 4 guys based in Los Angeles recorded and mixed a powerful rock and roll album in a little over 10 days, and for a brief time, the world couldn't get enough of them.

Welcome to episode 157 of Love That Album.

It seemed that you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing that flammed drum beat that held together a song as lustful as anything in rock music, My Sharona. Doug Fieger, Berton Averre, Prescott Niles and Bruce Gary released their debut album Get The Knack and music fans went crazy. Of course, things turned sour with fickle fans and the media who had to take these guys down a peg or two. That's not the story (in the main) that this episode is about.

I am hugely privileged to have Knack bassist Prescott Niles join me to talk about the 6 albums the band released over their career, putting paid to the lie that My Sharona is all they accomplished....but this episode is about more than just The Knack. Prescott talks about his music life starting in Brooklyn, and his time working with musicians like Velvet Turner, Arthur Lee, and George Harrison. He also talks about Fillmore East and Woodstock, and tells some interesting tales about Jimi Hendrix, and a few others.

This is a mammoth conversation we recorded over two sessions (one wasn't enough to get all these stories out). I am hugely grateful to Prescott for taking the time to join me on the show – something 15 year old me who played Get The Knack to death on original release could never have imagined. I'd also liked to thank Randy Haecker who hooked me up with Prescott.

So put on your skinny ties and download the show.
