Long May You Young 76: Paradox Jun 11, 2022

You better believe Mike put on his best cowboy outfit for this one, while Luke and Russ chimed in from their twin outhouses. That's right. It's time to talk about Paradox, Youngsters. Daryl's behind the camera and Neil and the POTR boys are out front. We talk about our highlights from the movie. We get gushy over Lukas covering his dad's tune. Luke wishes he were there for that cowgirl jam. Mike loves a good pipe organ. Russ enjoys a particular river scene. Who am I kidding? We all do.

My Rock Moment: Danny Kortchmar on his work with Carole King, Jackson Browne, Don Henley, The Immediate Family and more Jun 11, 2022
    Show notes

My Rock Moment sits down with the legendary Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar. Originally from New York, Danny moved to LA in the 60s, settled in Laurel Canyon and made his mark in the LA music scene. Even if you aren't familiar with his name, chances are his work has had a prominent place in your rock playlists.

Danny Kortchmar’s credits as guitarist, producer, songwriter, and session musician include work with James Taylor, Don Henley, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and Billy Joel, among many others. As a songwriter, Kortchmar has both written alone or collaborated with numerous artists, penning indelible tracks such as Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry,” “All She Wants to Do Is Dance,” and “New York Minute,” as well as Jackson Browne’s “Somebody’s Baby” and “Shaky Town,” to name a few.

Danny is now with The Immediate Family (the modern iteration of a legendary studio ensemble known as “The Section”), a rock and roll band composed of four of the most recorded, respected and sought-after players in modern music: Danny Kortchmar (guitar and vocals), Waddy Wachtel (guitar and vocals), Leland Sklar (bass), Russ Kunkel (drums) and the addition of prominent touring, session guitarist and songwriter Steve Postell (guitar and vocals).

The Immediate Family had a new EP Live From Telefunken Soundstage come out on May 13. This is a bridge release to the band’s forthcoming second full-length studio album and anticipated documentary, directed by Danny Tedesco (The Wrecking Crew). The film is expected to be released later this year.

We cover quite a bit of ground in this episode, but check out their website below to learn more about this iconic band of musicians, listen to their latest work and get information on show dates later in the year:

The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast: UAWIL #80 Carl Palmer of ELP & Asia Interview Jun 11, 2022
    Show notes

Carl Palmer achieved status as a legend with the progressive rock trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer in the 1970s. But the 1980s were a time of change for rock music thanks to corporate rock radio & MTV in America. Proggers had to change their signature 15 minute songs to more radio friendly 4 minute tunes while maintaining their extraordinary musicianship.

Carl found huge success in 1982 with the debut album Asia which would be the #1 selling album in the US that year. With slick videos and catchy choruses, Asia rose to popularity quickly. Mastermind David Geffen quickly got them into the studio for the 1983 followup Alpha & booked a historic live satellite broadcast for MTV in Tokyo - Asia in Asia.

Out June 10 as a deluxe box set, we chatted to Carl about his heady times with Asia in the early 80s, all the work leading up to the show December 6, 1983 at the Budokan, John Wetton's departure & return to the band and many fond memories along the way. Asia will be touring the US to celebrate their 40th anniversary and we talk about further future plans for the band.

Songfacts Podcast: BJ Barham of American Aquarium Jun 11, 2022
    Show notes

Ten years ago BJ Barham and his band American Aquarium were about to call it quits. They'd been touring nationally at small clubs and had seemingly plateaued in their growth as a band. They'd written some new tunes and decided to hop into a studio with Jason Isbell to record what they thought would be their swan song album, Burn. Flicker. Die. It was not.

As BJ describes in this Songfacts Podcast episode, things changed after that album. When I press him on what he thinks happened, he points to writing songs for himself rather than trying to create something he thought listeners might want. Ten years later and American Aquarium is going strong, about to release their latest album, Chicamacomico, and start a massive summer tour with a headlining slot at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.

Tunes & Tumblers: Century Club: Pride Extravaganza - Rina Sawayama and a Rainbow Shot (feat. Grace Kay) Jun 10, 2022
    Show notes

Century Club is your weekly shot of what's new in music. Every week, the Tunes & Tumblers team bring you a mini pairing of a recent release and a craft shooter to keep your quarantine interesting. Make all the shots to enter the esteemed club yourself.

It's the most wonderful time of the year. Pride Month is in full swing and we're here to soak up every rainbow-drenched drop. Literally. This year, we get the party started right with "This Hell," the latest banger from acclaimed pop artist Rina Sawayama, an affirmational queer anthem that goes down best with Pedro's signature Rainbow Shot. Plus we take the NSFW history of disco head-on, throw massive shade on all the corporate Pride events begging for your dollars, and reveal what the heck a Nancy Reagan stamp has to do with Pride anyway.

But it wouldn't be Century Club if we didn't keep the hits coming with a special musical guest. LA electropop singer-songwriter Grace Kay drop by the pod to play an exclusive stripped version of her latest single "overgrown." She has a gift for producing refined and punchy songs, with lush vocal textures and nostalgic lyrics that will have you crying on the train while listening to Fleetwood Mac. This version of "overgrown" can only be heard here, so stick around for that tasty slice of dessert. Cheers, fam!
