DittyTV's Insights: The Bacon Brothers Jul 10, 2022
    Show notes

Amy Wright chats with brothers Michael and Kevin Bacon, aka The Bacon Brothers, all about their brand-new five-song EP, Erato.

As multi-faceted artists with a ton of creativity in their DNA, Michael and Kevin have been actively creating music together, well, since they were just kids. They call the genre-bending sound they make “Forosoco” - a blend of folk, rock, soul, and country influences. And that makes sense, considering it's the continuation of sounds heard long ago in Philadelphia, where the two siblings were raised on a soundtrack of 1970s singer/songwriters, Philly soul singers, and classic rock bands.

"We're a songwriting band, and the songs lead the way," Kevin explains. "We're not beholden to a specific sound. We just write the songs and let them point us in the right direction. That's how we've done it since the very beginning."

The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast UAWIL 84: Stones in Hyde Park 2 + Def Leppard & Motley Crue Live Jul 10, 2022
    Show notes

The pandemic caused the cancellation and postponement of rock shows all over the world for 2 years. Thankfully live music is returning and this week we review a couple of shows that prove it's back in a big way.

After taking his family to see the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park for their 202nd London concert (but first without Charlie Watts), The Wold decided to return solo for the 203rd Stones show in town. Action Jackson took his son to The Stadium Tour in Jacksonville, FL which had been delayed 2 years. It was the first time he'd seen Motley Crue and the first time in 30 years he'd seen Def Leppard. In fact, it had been almost 30 years since he'd seen a concert in a stadium so it was a big night for him & Action III.

We're so glad to have live music back and to share our experiences with our listeners. We reviewed the first Stones gig in Hyde Park on UAWIL 83 so while we point out the differences in the setlist & experience, we give Action a chance to tell us all about his first stadium show in decades.

Songfacts Podcast: Ayla Schafer Jul 09, 2022
    Show notes

Well I am very excited for you all to listen to today's show as we have Ayla Schafer. Ayla is an English singer and songwriter who has one of the most unique journeys we have had on the show to date.

This episode goes in depth about how music can affect us as people. As I record this intro, I am camping in the Wyoming highlands and have had a few days to reset, slow down, and clear my head of all the noise that life brings from time to time. I find Ayla's music and story run parallel to this kind of slowed-down mentality. Her beautiful melodies, soft vocal touches and spiritual lyrics remind us that we are all connected to one another and the natural world. So please, sit back, relax and enjoy this conversation with the lovely, Ayla Schafer.

Rock N Roll Archaeology Episode 22: The Second Wave - On the Morning After the Sixties Jul 09, 2022
    Show notes

We start with a tragedy, then a cautionary tale of the world not ready for a band. We then find more positive inspiration from an artist who delivers a huge seller. We end with a legend.

Janis Joplin dies just before releasing her magnum opus, “Pearl.” A band called Fanny is ready to rock, but a culture poisoned by the patriarchy isn’t yet ready to accept them. Carole King makes Tapestry, a sincere, modest, and deeply personal album that hits huge and becomes a milestone for women. We complete the story with a profile of one of the giants of 20th Century Music, Joni Mitchell. We discuss her artistic and commercial peak in the early 70s with “Blue,” “For the Roses,” and “Court and Spark.” We admire all of these women for kicking down the door, and we celebrate the progress we’ve made since them, but there is still a long way to go.

Now for some general remarks about the research and writing.

To the best of our ability, we tried to center women in this chapter. We’ll leave it to the listener to decide how we did with that.

There’s a diversity of opinion about this, but we think it’s fair to say the second wave of feminism hits the crest during the period we are covering, and it is not at all a coincidence that women really start to make big and important contributions to Rock Music right around this time too.

Roe vs Wade was decided right around here, about fifty years ago. We are painfully aware of the US Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe, stripping many millions of American women of their fundamental human rights to bodily autonomy and medical privacy.

As we move forward with our chapters, we will document that half century of regressive backlash and how it got us here; it’s part of the story. Like we often say, Rock N Roll reflects back on, interacts with, and affects the larger society. And vice versa. In the late Sixties and early Seventies, it seemed like the progress would be permanent, and that more progress was on the way. Some of us were naive enough to believe that. We would do well now to remember the words of the anti slavery activist Frederick Douglass, way back in 1857:

This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.

Performance Anxiety: Ivan Nahem (Ritual Tension, Swans) Jul 09, 2022
    Show notes

Ivan Nahem had no choice but to be creative. Born in the 50’s, his mother was a graphic designer and his father played professional baseball. In fact, his dad, Sam, played a big part in the integration of minority players into Major League Baseball. But Ivan was drawn to music. He wanted to play drums, but he was told he had to learn the accordion first. After some less than constructive criticism about his prowess with that instrument, he decided he wasn’t musical and turned to poetry. After moving cross country twice, playing with a few bands, he formed the band Ritual Tension. Ivan talks alot about that and how that led to him playing dums on two Swans albums. Ivan is open and honest about all of this, his writing, yoga, and even losing his son in 2013.

Ivan has been busy during the past few COVID tainted years. In addition to releasing a new Ritual Tension album at the beginning of the pandemic, he has recorded and just released a solo album called Crawling Through Grass. It’s one of the most unique (in a good way) albums I’ve heard in a while. Think ambient punk. Give Ivan a follow @ivan.nahem or @ritualtension on Instagram and Facebook. Pick up Crawling Through Grass through Arguably Music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. You can help us out with a review, a coffee (ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety) or buying yourself something nice at performanceanx.threadless.com.
