Deeper Digs in Rock: Jake Brennan of Disgraceland - The Podcast and Book Oct 18, 2019
    Show notes

This episode The Rock n Roll Archaeologist goes toe to toe with the Rock N Roll Criminologist! Join Christian as he welcomes guest Jake Brennan of the hit podcast Disgraceland. Jake has a new book on the streets that takes the rock n roll crime drama podcast and puts it in writing this time! We go dig into the book and on Jake’s journey from born musician to podcast hero!

You may know Jerry Lee Lewis married his thirteen-year-old cousin but did you know he shot his bass player in the chest with a shotgun or that a couple of his wives died under extremely mysterious circumstances? Or that Sam Cooke was shot dead in a seedy motel after barging into the manager's office naked to attack her? Maybe not. Would it change your view of him if you knew that, or would your love for his music triumph?

Real rock stars do truly insane thing and invite truly insane things to happen to them; murder, drug trafficking, rape, cannibalism and the occult. We allow this behavior. We are complicit because a rock star behaving badly is what's expected. It's baked into the cake. Deep down, way down, past all of our self-righteous notions of justice and right and wrong, when it comes down to it, we want our rock stars to be bad. We know the music industry is full of demons, ones that drove Elvis Presley, Phil Spector, Sid Vicious and that consumed the Norwegian Black Metal scene. We want to believe in the myths because they're so damn entertaining.

DISGRACELAND is a collection of the best of these stories about some of the music world's most beloved stars and their crimes. It will mix all-new, untold stories with expanded stories from the first two seasons of the Disgraceland podcast. Using figures we already recognize, DISGRACELAND shines a light into the dark corners of their fame revealing the fine line that separates heroes and villains as well as the danger Americans seek out in their news cycles, tabloids, reality shows and soap operas. At the center of this collection of stories is the ever-fascinating music industry--a glittery stage populated by gangsters, drug dealers, pimps, groupies with violence, scandal and pure unadulterated rock 'n' roll entertainment.

Jake Brennan is a Boston based musician who launched, Disgraceland, "a rock 'n' roll true crime podcast" in February 2018 to great acclaim. Jake grew up in music. He saw the Ramones play live when he was ten years old and began recording and touring at a young age, first with his band Cast Iron Hike and then with his bands the Confidence Men and Bodega Girls. His songs have been featured in film and television, however Jake thinks his coolest musical accomplishment was opening for Fugazi "back in the day." He lives in North Boston with his wife and two sons.

Rock N Roll Librarian: Up Jumped the Devil: The Real Life of Robert Johnson Oct 17, 2019
    Show notes

This episode Rock N Roll Librarian Shelley Sorenson and Rock N Roll Archaeologist Christian Swain go down the big muddy river and deep into the delta to discuss Bruce Conforth and Gayle Dean Wardlow’s new book ‘Up Jumped the Devil: The Real Life of Robert Johnson’. This time, while on our Mississippi adventure, we will play many of the few Robert Johnson recordings and couple that with samples from famous acolytes throughout the rock n roll era to show just how influential this guy was to the latter music.

Robert Johnson’s recordings, made in 1936 and 1937, have profoundly influenced generations of singers, guitarists, and songwriters. Yet until now, his short life—he was murdered at the age of 27—has been poorly documented. Gayle Dean Wardlow has been interviewing people who knew Johnson since the early 1960s, and he was the person who discovered Johnson’s death certificate in 1967. Bruce Conforth began his study of Johnson’s life and music in 1970 and made it his mission to fill in what was still unknown about him. In this definitive biography, the two authors relied on every interview, resource, and document, much of it material no one has seen before. This is the first book about Johnson that documents his lifelong relationship with family and friends in Memphis, details his trip to New York, uncovers where and when his wife Virginia died and the impact this had on him, fully portrays the other women Johnson was involved with, and tells exactly how and why he died and who gave him the poison that killed him. Up Jumped the Devil will astonish blues fans worldwide by painting a living, breathing portrait of a man who was heretofore little more than a legend.

Muses Ep 116: Lydia Criss Oct 17, 2019
    Show notes

In this week's episode, we chat with Lydia Criss, author of the book, Sealed with a Kiss. Lydia is the first wife of Peter Criss of KISS, ever heard of them?

We had a great time chatting with Lydia about meeting Peter when he was Peter Criscuola, how their young love blossomed and being a part of the phenomenon that would become KISS. Lydia was there at the very beginning, supporting Peter while he pursued his dreams of rock and roll stardom.

Lydia tells us about how Peter created the cat man character which was inspired by their pet cat which they shared together. Lydia’s memoir is also like a wonderful scrapbook, documenting home photos of their life, relationship as well as the band’s evolving look. What was it like hanging around with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley? It's all here!

We also discuss the part she played in the creation of the song “Beth”, what it was like to witness KISS become one of the biggest bands in the world, travel the world, rub shoulders with celebrities, lose herself in that relationship, and find herself once again. This is a story of young love, whirlwind romance, excess, rock and roll and a woman finding her own place in the world.

Rock Candy Ep. 90: Robert Johnson - Nation Sack Oct 16, 2019
    Show notes

We switch things up this Spooptober with a musician who isn't scary himself, but has a legend based in dealings with the devil himself. Robert Johnson didn't start off as the amazing bluesman we know him as, but it is speculated that he went farther than just blood, sweat, and tears to make it happen. We give you the details on his all too short life and take you through his journey to the crossroads.
