Rock's Backpages Ep. 56: Kris Needs on The Clash + Zigzag magazine + Politics & Pop Dec 14, 2019
    Show notes

On the day after the UK's Tory landslide, Mark & Barney ask the legendary Kris Needs to look back at the legacy of ultimate agit-rockers the Clash on the 40th anniversary of their classic London Calling.

Needs reminisces about key music venue Friar's in Aylesbury and his involvement with (and subsequent stewardship of) Pete Frame's seminal ZigZag magazine. His hosts ask about Just a Shot Away, Part 1 of his memoir of the pivotal rock year of 1969, and then discuss his integral involvement with his mates Mick Jones, Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon. Spinning off from the Clash, the trio hear a brief audio clip of tireless politico Billy Bragg talking about the Tories in 1990 – and then discuss free RBP pieces on "revolutionary rock" and "the greening of Planet Pop".

Mark introduces the week's new audio interview, a 1989 conversation with the much-missed Kirsty MacColl. After we hear a clip of the singer talking to John Tobler about an unreleased album she made for Polydor, there's an appreciation of MacColl as a songwriter and all-round good egg (and, later, a clip of her talking about her timeless contribution to the Pogues' Yuletide classic 'Fairytale of New York').

Finally, Mark talks us through his highlights among the week's new library articles, including pieces on Chuck Berry playing live in Lewisham in 1965, Sweet playing the Rainbow in 1973, and Donna Summer riding the "dark horse" of disco in 1976…

Many thanks to special guest Kris Needs, whose new book Just a Shot Away: 1969 revisited is out now and published by New Haven.

Muses Ep 120: Audrey and Hank Williams Dec 13, 2019
    Show notes

This week we travel back in time to the 1940's & '50's where Hank Williams shook the world with a new sound dubbed 'Hillbilly Rock'

Hank may have had an incredible voice and song-writing skills like no other, but without the strong willed women who surrounded him the world may never have known. As a child it was his momager Lillie Stone pushing him to be all he could until he met the love of his life and muse for all of his songs, Audrey Mae Sheppard in 1943.

With Audrey by his side Hanks career skyrocketed. She booked the interviews, tours, created his rockabilly image, was involved in (and came up with the ideas for) all of Hanks business proposals and even joined the band onstage now and again. As Audrey once said "He was lucky with a God-given talent, and I was lucky with a few brains."

Career wise things couldn't have been better but behind the scenes things weren't as rosy. An alcoholic since he was just an early teen, Hanks addiction, and the mood swings that came from it had the couple in constant turmoil. Life certainly wasn't easy, but it did make for great songwriting material.

Research for this episode came from the book Still in Love with You: The Story of Hank and Audrey Williams by Dale Vinicur and Lycretia Williams (their daughter!).

The Imbalanced History of Rock and Roll: Rock And Roll Roars into the Twenties Dec 12, 2019
    Show notes

Ray And Markus take a quick look at 2019 in Rock And Roll and what we can look forward to in 2020. We were fortunate there was a plethora of great albums in 2019. Tool, Cage The Elephant, Rival Sons, Gary Clarke Jr., Marcus King Band, Raconteurs, Papa Roach, Foals as well as many others we weren't able to name. We also spoke about some music to look forward to in 2020 including Dirty Honey, AC/DC, Guns N Roses (Maybe/hopefully), Ozzy, The Struts, Them Crooked Vultures(fingers crossed!), The Foo Fighters and more. We expect to do a follow up or addendum and cover some of the music we left out of this particular discussion. Rock And Roll is NOT dead. It's very much alive and magnificent.

    Highway Hi-Fi Ep. 63: Turntable Tutelage - How-To Records Dec 11, 2019
    Show notes

In the middle of the century, a collective thirst for knowledge grew around the world. In these new space age times, people had neither the time nor patience for books, tutors, or apprenticeships. Instead they turned to the newest form of mass media for their learning needs...the vinyl record. The turntable allowed unlimited listens in the private and cozy confines of home making it the ideal vehicle for audio instruction.

As a result, there was a gigantic wave of how-to records, or educational records, produced. These discs were designed to help people learn how to become better. Better ventriloquists, better dancers, better pick-up artists, better mathematicians, and better duck callers. An age of self improvements, decades before YouTube. It gave people a sense of control and purpose in a world where so much was changing over which they had no influence, no power, and often no understanding. This combined with a wave of mass capitalist consumption made for the fertile conditions for the explosion of instructional discs.

Today, we discuss the wacky world of tutelage that are How-To Records.

Rock Candy Ep. 98: Eddie Money - Hot Bottoms on Telegraph Avenue Dec 11, 2019
    Show notes

He is a man of charisma and talent that we lost only a few months ago. Eddie Money's music has the ability to bring a listener back to the most stereotypical of 80's proms. But he's much more than a few catchy tunes, he has a fascinating story and is someone who put in the work to get himself the success he had. A fun loving guy who was was more than happy to make friends and be kind to fans, everything led up to his tragic death this past September. Why not grab yourself a bottle of Two Tickets To Paradise from Crooked Stave and Maui Brewing Co to help us celebrate the life of this amazing rocker!

Make it Stop: Lil B - Green Flame with Zach Armentrout Dec 10, 2019
    Show notes

Imma tell you like this whodie, if you're really about that pretty bitch shit, that gutta shit, that fifty, if you're still selling jerry and you know you're doin' numbers, 28 wit' a ladder, still on that FIGARO. If you're wet like wonton soup, if you look like Jesus, if you've got 50,000 bitches on your dick, if you're bitch mob task force all day, real pink bandana shit, KRIS HUMPHRIES.

If you know the BasedGod, you already know what it is. It's time for an episode on Lil B. The king of all memes. The BasedGod. Brandon McCartney. An unstoppably prolific enigma of an MC, Lil B has memed his way into the public spotlight again and again -- whether through his highly effective curses on NBA players, the various public beatings he's taken from fellow rappers, or his provocative album titles like "I'm Gay", Lil B captures the imaginations of the people.

Comedian Zach Armentrout, host of The Mendoza Line comedy show, joins us to discuss Green Flame, one of the eighteen mixtapes that Lil B released in 2012. In typical Lil B fashion it's lo-fi, dashed off, with seemingly no thought put into it, and yet somehow, someway, Mike is all about it. Listen as Zach and Heather try to reason with him to no avail.
