No Filler: Paul McCartney Unplugged in '91 Jan 20, 2020
    Show notes

Fresh off his 106-show Paul McCartney World Tour that featured dozens of staple Beatles and Wings songs, it's no wonder McCartney saw MTV's Unplugged as the perfect opportunity to take his live show format and do the exact opposite. Relatively unheard of up to that point, McCartney's performance and subsequent album release gave Unplugged jumpstarted the show's popularity and helped it gain the cult status that it went onto receive.

    The Band: A History - Cahoots Jan 20, 2020
    Show notes

In 1993 Rick Danko told The News-Star: "I think we shipped a million copies of that second album and that changed a lot of people’s lives — in particular, the Band’s. After that, we were only getting together once a year, for a couple of months, to record. It was like we were too decadent to play.”

1970 was a hard year, but it wouldn't get any easier in 1971. Having struggled through "Stage Fright" and taking on the disastrous Festival Express music festival, The Band was burnt out and in a dark space. However, it was back into the studio to record a new album, even if they didn't want to. From the exterior The Band was the perfect group. They were pretty universally loved from their fans, their critics and their peers. The opposite was true for the five guys in the group, once a group of tight knit brothers was shattering. Creative droughts, drugs and alcohol continued to plague them deeply. "Cahoots" is a manifestation of the period the songs crafted for the album don't do anything to hide it.

Now, with "Cahoots" their fourth studio album released to the world in 1971, The Band's shiny veneer was fading. The public started to sense The Band wasn't in a happy place and The Band didn't know how much longer they were going to be able to keep it up.

Rock's Backpages 59: Laura Barton on Road Trips + Sam Cooke + Isobel Campbell Jan 18, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, Mark & Barney welcome the wonderful Laura Barton and learn all about her career as a star Guardian writer – and as an author and broadcaster.

Laura talks about her travels in America, and about working with photographer Sarah Lee on the newly-published collection West Of West. The hosts ask her about her pieces on Bon Iver, Daniel Johnston and Riot Grrrl power – and more generally about her deeply personal approach to music writing.

A new Sam Cooke box set prompts a conversation about the pin-up gospel star who crossed over to become an icon of "proto-soul" before his shocking and tragic death in 1964. A 2010 hymn to Sam by the legendary Lenny Kaye provides the platform for ruminations on the man's sublime voice and his immeasurable influence on everyone from Otis Redding to Rod Stewart.

A clip from the late Andy Gill's 2005 audio interview with ex-Belle & Sebastian member Isobel Campbell is the catalyst for a discussion of the latter's collaborations with brooding grunge survivor Mark Lanegan. Having interviewed the Scots singer-songwriter when the duo's Ballad of the Broken Seas came out in 2006, Laura helps to place the pair in the tradition of such "beauty-and-the-beast" hook-ups as Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra.

Mark talks us through highlights of the week's additions to the RBP Library, including pieces on the unsavoury Jonathan King (1971), the fabulous Freddie Mercury (1975) and David Bowie's personal tour of his London landmarks (1993). The episode concludes with discussion of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's just-announced Class of 2020 – with specific reference to the covert racism (not to mention misogyny) underpinning reaction to the inclusion of Whitney Houston…

Many thanks to special guest Laura Barton, who is on Twitter @missbarton. West of West, by Sarah Lee with an introduction by Laura, is published by Unbound.

Pieces discussed: Bon Iver, Daniel Johnston, Grrrl Power, Sam Cooke, Sam Cooker, Sam Cookest, Boyce and Hart, Jonathan King, Queen's Freddie Mercury, Beach Boys, Milli Vanilli, David Bowie, Kenickie, The Libertines, Beck and Big Mama Thornton.

Rock Candy Ep. 101: Nirvana Part 2 - Subway and Heroin Jan 16, 2020
    Show notes

We've reached the bridge of our Nirvana series, and here is where the tides change twice: once with the addition of their new drummer Dave Grohl, and again with the addition of the infamous Courtney Love into Kurt's love life. How did Kurt get addicted to heroin? How bad were the names of Dave's first few bands? How happy was Krist to be there? We try to answer some questions that make sense of the road Nirvana walked down and how they handled the unexpected fame that was thrust upon them. These boys didn't expect to be the answer to a generation of misery, but they answered the call anyway, much to the chagrin of their personal lives.

Make it Stop: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Movie Soundtrack with Joe Streeter Jan 16, 2020
    Show notes

The Beatles need no introduction. We all know them and their legacy. We all know how they shaped popular music for decades to come. But did you know that eleven years after the release of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band the forces of money and cocaine collided, causing a terrible supernova known as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band -- THE MOVIE?! Helmed by a doe eyed Peter Frampton and the drug addled husks of The Bee Gees, masterminded by their manager, and rounded out with a cadre of cartoon voiced actors, Sgt. Pepper was a cultural and critical failure, earning the ire of movie and music critics alike, not to mention fans. Filtered through layers of blue eyed soul, vocoder and drug psychosis, the once iconic songs of The Beatles are hollowed out and butchered on the film's soundtrack. Joe Streeter (Have A Nice Life, Giles Corey, CONSUMER) joins Mike and Heather to endure this butchery. Now it's your turn.
