Dad Bod Rap Pod Ep. 112: Estee Nack and Spectacular Diagnostics Apr 04, 2020
    Show notes

This week we have a brief check in with the three hosts via conference call, where we hear about Dave's interview with Conway and The Alchemist for Billboard about their new EP Lulu, and Demone tells us about being interviewed by NPR for a story related to his day job running a food bank. Next up we have an interview with MC Estee Nack, an incredibly productive rapper who releases excellent street rap at a rapid clip. He just released the album IWANNAFXCKJADAFIRE as a physical-only drop and Baladas, a collaboration with producer Superior, to streaming services. After that we have an interview with producer Spectacular Diagnostics, who has a long history in the game that many many be unaware of. His album Raw Unknown (one of our favorite releases of the year so far) features MCs such as billy woods, Quelle Chris and Vic Spencer and he is keeping busy during the shelter-in-place era by releasing beat packs for a dollar on his Bandcamp page.

I'm In Love With That Song: Edwin Starr - 'War' Apr 03, 2020
    Show notes

"War" was originally written for The Temptations, but when Motown was too squeamish to have one of their top acts release an overtly anti-Vietnam song, Edwin Starr stepped up and secured his place in history. His no-holds-barred delivery of "War" resulted in one of the most commercially successful protest songs ever recorded. Though Edwin Starr never reached these heights again, he left his mark with a song that transcended its Vietnam-era roots: It was one of the songs on Clear Channel's no-play list after September 11, 2001.

Highway Hi-Fi: Desert Island Recordings - Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen Apr 01, 2020
    Show notes

Bruce Springsteen was totally spent after finishing a grueling year long 140 date tour for his massively successful double record The River. Needing a rest, he rented a house by a reservoir in Colt’s Neck, New Jersey. His time spent there allowed him a little bit of respite from life on the road and time apart from the fans. He was able to fully take in and embrace his musical and literary influences, past and present. And while the quiet allowed him to take some time to reflect, he was dealing with insecurity, depression, and the immense pressure that he felt from all sides. And in the silence, he fell prey to a subconscious nagging about the unconnected dots from his youth. Like so many other times in his career, he turned to work and music to escape. However, in a rented room with nothing but his demons, the sound that sprang forth from the man was very different.

This is part two of our isolation albums: Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen

Rock Candy Ep. 112: Janis Joplin -Good Chet Apr 01, 2020
    Show notes

We close off Women's History Month with one of the most influential women in all of music. Janis Joplin had a short career, but that doesn't take away from the impact she made. Her rise may have been quick, but it wasn't easy, she had many stumbles along the way. We look to demystify the legend she was touted up as, and show her true nature and just how full of life and humanity she was. She experienced her fair share of heartaches and used that pain to make some of the most emotionally raw music you've ever heard. Unfortunately, she also used unfavorable methods to try to conceal that pain. Her story is an amazing one, so get ready to hear about a true pioneer of rock.

Make it Stop: March Badness FINALE Apr 01, 2020
    Show notes

It's the Worst, Least-Wonderfulest time of the year. March was always a brutal month, but this one is definitely the Baddest on record - with a global pandemic forcing entire cities on lockdown, hospitals desperate for gowns, masks and ventilators, and scary spiky death graphs getting ever more urgently plotted. This is a Bad Time, #stoppies, but what are we to do in a crisis besides doubling down on this, our deepest dive so far into the most despicable, soulless, self-indulgent rock music ever made? As we stand here, dangling on the precipice of total destruction, our precious time on this planet is more important than ever. So relax, grab a tasty quarantine edible or two, and spend the next hour and 45 minutes with us as we argue over whether Nickelback or Imagine Dragons is more bad than the other one. Just like our toes dancing on that cliff's edge, it's a razor thin margin and a heckuva ride, #stoppies. Won't you join us from the safety of your own homes as we settle this, once and for all?
