Long May You Young 24: Old Ways Nov 04, 2020
    Show notes

It's time to get back to the country with this episode, Youngsters. Luke whips up some Old-Ways-Old-Fashioned's while Russ mosie's on in in full cowboy regalia. We talk about Willie and Waylon and the International Harvesters. Mike brings up some unfortunate Neil quotes from the time and it sparks a lively discussion on religion, politics and how people can change. Luke can't get Larry David out of his head and there are several - and I mean SEVERAL - Sam Elliot impressions throughout this episode. It's Old Ways.

Bob Dylan: About Man and God and Law 06: Teachers Nov 03, 2020
    Show notes

Painter, poet, teacher, prophet, scribe. Who taught Bob Dylan his artistry and purpose? Dylan is not only one of our greatest teachers. He's also a student at the top of the class where tradition is taught, anchoring the world in the past while compelling time and purpose forward. We make room for Woody Guthrie, King Solomon, the Green Violinist, Johanna and her visions, Moby Dick, and many more as we head back to school with Bob Dylan.

No Filler: The White Stripes - Elephant Nov 03, 2020
    Show notes

Jack White's appearance on Saturday Night Live a few weeks back reminded those who forgot what a powerful and raw performer he is (and made those who've been cooped up all year long for live performances again). And for a lot of us, our introduction to White's unmatched blend of hard blues and garage rock all started with 2003's Elephant. We take a listen to a couple non-singles off the record, and play a clip of his SNL performance of his "Ball And Biscuit" medley.

    Tracklist:

    1. The White Stripes - Hypnotize
    2. The White Stripes - Black Math
    3. Jack White - Ball And Biscuit/Don't Hurt Yourself/Jesus Is Coming Soon (live on SNL)
    4. The White Stripes - Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine
    5. Fake Eyes - Illuminate
    6. The Wake - Melancholy Man
    7. The Gories - Stranded

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: Daragh Carville Nov 02, 2020
    Show notes

Screenwriter Daragh Carville (ITV’s The Bay) praises Dylan’s “extraordinary ear for spoken language” while reminding us that he “draws on cinema, is fascinated by storytelling but his own films don’t work at all”. All the great story-songs are explored, including Highlands (“I phoned people up, I was so excited!”), Dignity (“it never resolves but at the same time it’s perfectly satisfying”), The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Brownsville Girl, Hurricane, Isis, Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream, The Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Clothes Line Saga, 4th Time Around and plenty more.

Daragh particularly praises the 21st Century Dylan: “in the last twenty years, his persona is Humphrey Bogart crossed with a riverboat gambler” and enjoys his “obstinate personality. It’s like a marriage. You love the flaws, too”. Films are discussed (Shane, The Gunfighter), Dylan’s early contemporaries like Phil Ochs are considered, even video games are touched upon (Red Dead Redemption!). Join us there - when you feel good enough to go.

Daragh Carville is a playwright and screenwriter from Armagh in Northern Ireland. He is a recipient of the Stewart Parker Award and the Meyer Whitworth Prize for playwriting. His first feature film, Middletown, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and his second, Cherrybomb, at the Berlin Film Festival. Plays include Language Roulette, Observatory, Family Plot, This Other City, The Life and Times of Mitchell and Kenyon and History. Daragh’s television work includes ITV’s The Bay (Series 2, 2021), Being Human, 6 Degrees and The Smoke. Radio plays: Regenerations - about a Doctor Who convention - and Dracula, starring Michael Fassbender. He teaches Scriptwriting at Birkbeck, University of London.

The Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: Miles Davis Crosses The Point of No Return Nov 02, 2020
    Show notes

50 years ago Miles Davis released an album that blew the music world away, Bitches Brew. An album as close to perfect as perfect gets. The musicians all made incredible magic in the studio as the Grand Wizard, Miles Davis, stirred the cauldron. With help from Teo Macero, they made a masterpiece that still may be ahead of it's time 50 years later. The Imbalanced Brothers give you an overview of the album and how it was made as well as a brief look into who the complex genius Miles Davis was. Bitches Brew may be the first Jazz/Fusion - Jazz/Rock And Roll album recorded. It stands strong today and every music lover should listen to the album at least once all the way through.

You can read more about Bitches Brew in the Jazz Times article about the making of the album.
