    Latest Episodes:
Rock's Backpages Ep.87: Jez Butterworth on the Band + Dolly Parton + Perry Farrell Nov 17, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode we welcome acclaimed playwright Jez (Jerusalem) Butterworth into RBP's virtual cupboard to talk mainly about The Band – but also about Dolly Parton and other musical tastes shared with hosts Mark, Barney & Jasper.

Barney gets the ball rolling by asking Jez how an early '90s conversation with Malcolm McLaren led to his first play Mojo – and how music has long played a part in his work. A Butterworth screenplay based on John Niven's peerless novella Music from Big Pink prompts discussion of The Band, taking in clips from Barney's 1991 audio interview with Al Aronowitz, the New York Post writer who first visited Big Pink to report on Bob Dylan's former backing group.

A tangent takes the episode into the terrain of Jerusalem, not to mention Brexit and the rural vs. urban polarisation exemplified by the U.S. presidential elections (still bitterly undecided at the time this episode was recorded). A neat segue leads to a deep appreciation of Dolly Parton, about to publish her autobiography Storyteller. An early Parton interview on RBP's home page provides a perfect springboard for consideration of her unique voice, her politics (or lack thereof), and her cosmetic augmentations.

There's no easy pivoting from Parton to Perry Farrell: suffice to say that – in 1996 audio clips about his Lollapalooza festival and the "spirits" of heroin and cocaine – the former Jane's Addiction and current Porno for Pyros frontman is barmy, brilliant and typically engaging.

Last but far from least, Mark talks us through his personal highlights from the week's new intake of great interviews and reviews from the golden age(s) of music journalism – including the Daily Express' Ivor Davis dropping in on John Lennon during his "lost" L.A. weekend in 1973, the Village Voice's Richard Goldstein on the "meaning" of Bette Midler in 1975, NME's Paul Morley coaxing quotes out of Joy Division's Ian Curtis in 1979… and that same rag's Steven Wells lambasting pale and uninteresting Velvet Underground devotees in 1993. Jasper takes us out with quotes from a fabulous early interview with Ms. Amy Winehouse…

Many thanks to special guest Jez Butterworth.

No Filler: The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Heart Nov 17, 2020
    Show notes

We've said it before, and we'll probably say it again: the early 00's marked the beginning of our journey as music lovers. And this is right about the time garage rock and the post-punk revival started to really take off. The Stills is just another of the countless "The" bands that hit the scene around that time, but there's just something about their debut record Logic Will Break Your Heart that stands out amongst the rest. It's dark and clever lyrics pair perfectly with the always clean, angular guitar work reminiscent of Interpol and Joy Division with catchy riffs and hooks aplenty.

The Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: The Seattle Syndrome Nov 16, 2020
    Show notes

Up until the mid to late 1980's most of the world didn't care about the Seattle music scene. Bands like The Ventures, Metal Church, Queensryche, The U-Men, The Mentors and The Sonics all made some noise. Until Green River, Malfunkshun and Soundgarden formed, people elsewhere weren't really noticing the music in Seattle. These bands opened a door that so many others rocked through until Nirvana blew the door wide open. The Seattle vibe/energy is discussed throughout the episode as we talk about The Seattle Syndrome. If you would like more information about the wonderful Seattle music history, read the book, "LOSER" by Clark Humphrey. Mark Yarm's, "Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge" is another great read about Seattle's Rock and Roll History. So many great bands and so much excellent music to discuss.

I'm In Love With That Song: Fleetwood Mac - 'The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Prong Crown)' Nov 16, 2020
    Show notes

There's never been any shortage of drama with Fleetwood Mac... long before the soap opera of Rumours, there was the psychodrama of Peter Green (and Jeremy Spencer, and Danny Kirwan...). The saga of how Peter Green-- one of the brightest guitarists to come out of '60's Britain, right up there with Clapton/Beck/Page-- was lost to a drug-fueled spiritual black hole is one of the great "if only..." tales in Rock History. When he passed away in July 2020, I knew it was time to tackle a Green-era Mac classic... I just had to gin up the courage to revisit the nightmare that awaits in "The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Prong Crown)"

What Difference Does It Make: Strum and Thrum - The American Jangle Underground 1983-1987 Nov 14, 2020
    Show notes

What Difference Does It Make celebrates the release of Strum and Thrum by talking with members of the Bangtails, The Ferrets, Great Plains, and The Darrows as well as Captured Tracks label head, Mike Sniper. The Strum & Thrum compilation includes an 80+ page booklet with an extensive oral history of the ‘80s indie scene and tons of archival images and ephemera. If you're wondering what "strum and thrum" means well so are most of the bands on this compilation. All we can say is that if you loved college rock from the 80s, this might just be the music you never knew you loved.
