See Hear: Interview with Amit Itzcar, director of "Furious And Fast: The Story of Fast Music And The Patiphone" Sep 28, 2022
    Show notes

I'm lucky to live in a town with a great music scene. Notwithstanding the tough times that both bands and venue operators are facing in the wake of the pandemic (and the rip-off merchants who believe that their bottom line is more important than paying musicians a living wage), Melbourne has always had a healthy music culture as do many cities around the world. I'm talking about cities where music venues are plentiful, bands are playing all week, and punters with a myriad of tastes can find something to please them.

One of those cities is Tel Aviv.

Welcome to episode 101 of See Hear Podcast.

Tim is still away and Bernie was running the Rock 'n' Roll Jumble Market, but I had the company of Israeli director Amit Itzcar. He has directed a great documentary called "Furious And Fast: The Story of Fast Music And The Patiphone”. On one level it is a film about an independent record label (Fast Music) in the late 90s to the early 2000s. This was a time when there were nearly no such thing in Israel. Linked to this label was a club on the wrong side of the track in Tel Aviv that was home to many garage and punk bands. Some achieved worldwide fandom....some just got gigs at the club. I had to pose a question about musician Ami Shalev whose wild behaviour made me think of another musician we've discussed on the show....

On another level, the film is about the friendship of Amir Schorr and Jango – musicians both who started the label and the club after realising they didn't like the control of the major labels. A familiar tale in your music-loving city?

Amit and I spend time talking about the bands, the making of the film, and his “day job” at Tel Aviv Cinematheque....and his role in a number of video clips for the duo, Lo (Hebrew for “no”). Even if you haven't seen the film yet, I think there's plenty here you can enjoy about the discussion.

I send my gratitude to Yaniv Eidelstein who suggested this film to me, and who was responsible for the English subtitles for the film. Keep an eye out for it on the film festival circuit and hopefully, it won't be too long before it gets a VOD release.

You can listen to many of the Fast Music roster of artists in Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOQtVFukqZ_yD6vU8CuvSbQ/videos (the records are almost impossible to get a hold of nowadays).

You can watch the video clips Amit appears in for Lo at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrg3nKVmQ_TlBOgJoNF36-g

….and just for the fun of it, here's a Q & A at Cinematheque with Henry Winkler that Amit tried to moderate.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfBlmVtIx54&t=2377s

You can keep up to date with when the film gets a screening near you at https://www.facebook.com/amitzcar

If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens.....

Shout It Out Loudcast: KISS Off The Soundboard Des Moines 1977 Sep 28, 2022
    Show notes

This week Tom & Zeus review the latest Off The Soundboard KISS release, KISS Off The Soundboard Des Moines 1977. This live album features KISS at arguably its highest popularity. The band was still with its original KISS members, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley & Peter Criss and the album was in support of KISS Alive II. This tour would see KISS sell out Madison Square Garden 3 nights in a row and Tokyo's Budokan for five nights in a row breaking a record.

This is SIOL's 6th live album review. The guy's breakdown the album, the tracks and of course Paul Stanley's stage banter as well. The list their top 5 favorite tracks and rank the cover (we know) and the album against the 5 live albums by KISS that were previously reviewed.

Could this be the Most Positive KISS Album Review ever?????

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Whitesnake 1987 with Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni of Growin Up Rock Sep 27, 2022
    Show notes

1987 in lined up perfectly for Whitesnake in North America. MTV was pushing bands like Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Def Leppard and hard rock was all over the charts. Bring in a seasoned veteran like David Coverdale, A&R legend John Kalodner and the muscle of David Geffen and you get 10 million copies sold in North America!

With fiery guitar magic from John Sykes, Coverdales sometimes rasping yet smooth vocals made this a juggernaut. But did you know Coverdale fired everyone and brought a whole new all star team for the tour? The videos were epic and featured perhaps the greatest video vixen of all time, Tawny Kitaen. The trilogy of Still of the Night, Here I Go Again (#1 US) and Is This Love (#2 US) videos are the stuff rock n roll dreams of the 80s were made of.

To walk through this 80s classic we've enlisted Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni of Growin' Up Rock Podcast and Album Review Crew with Tom & Zeus of Shout It Out Loudcast. Sonny knows his stuff, bought the record the first day it came out, saw Whitesnake on that tour and more. We reminisce and crack wise with Sonny on a record that we all lived through in the 80s.

Yesterday's Concert: Maggie Rogers Before Dawn Sep 27, 2022
    Show notes

Coming off the heels of my first show at Madison Square Garden I wasted no time for the next show. Entering the venue before most Americans had their morning coffee, I ate my breakfast bar while watching Maggie Rogers live. But this performance wasn’t in the great arenas of our country. Located outside of one of the most watched news programs, Maggie performed on the streets of New York.

Prisoners of Rock and Roll: The Songs Led Zeppelin Ripped Off Sep 26, 2022
    Show notes

There’s no debate that Led Zeppelin is one of the most powerful heavy, blues, rock and roll bands of all time. But what IS up for debate is their originality. Several of their biggest hits borrow (or steal) from songs that came before them, mostly from African American blues singers who already sang the blues because they were getting shafted by society. They’ve been sued almost a half a dozen times for copyright infringement and have made a career of taking songwriting credits for stuff they just didn’t write.

In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at when the levee breaks from a flood of accusations of plagiarism by shining a light on the songs behind some of Led Zeppelin’s most famous tunes. We’ll play the originals and the Zeppelin cuts that quote unquote “inspired” them. We’ll look at all of the times Zeppelin has cut a check and updated the songwriting credits as well as some other songs that sound coincidentally like something else.

Our show is sponsored by our home base of McCusker's Tavern at 17th and Shunk Streets in Philadelphia. We are proud supporters of our friends at Boldfoot Socks. We are just one of the dozens of awesome shows on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

"Long Train Runnin': Our Story with The Doobie Brothers" with Chris Epting Sep 26, 2022
    Show notes

Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston, the leaders of the Doobie Brothers, offer up a tag-team oral history with writer Chris Epting on the legendary rock band in "Long Train Runnin'." Their five decade journey, the longevity, success, drama and even the biker bars are all here. Chris joins us to recount their history, including the events that shelved Johnston and brought in Michael McDonald for The Doobies second wildly successful lineup. Chris has also worked with a number of musicians on their memoirs, including John Oates, Leif Garret, and members of Tesla and Def Leppard, as well as an upcoming book on and with Dave Mason. If that’s not enough. Epting has also written several great reads on pop culture, and pop music culture. They are the road map to many a great road trip, particularly if you’re curious where many a rocker were born, lived, slept and died, and just where Madonna’s bra currently resides.
