What Difference Does It Make: The Alternate Side Of Russ Borris Mar 01, 2021
    Show notes

Russ Borris, Music Director at WFUV in New York enters our virtual studios and immediately throws down some knowledge. 1) "Duran Duran is Life" 2) Flight of The Conchords are Hall & Oates 3) When it comes to Masters of The Universe, Leech is so much cooler than Moss Man. He also asks the important questions like, "What is the difference between an Alligator and a Crocodile and "Why was Poison a bigger band than Warrant?" The world may never know, but what we do know is that in-between all the shenanigans we manage to discuss songs 70 to 61 on the 1984 KROQ in Los Angeles year end chart.

The Hook Rocks!: Does Rock Music Need Mainstream Acceptance To Be Successful? Feb 27, 2021
    Show notes

Rock music rarely see acceptance by the mainstream music industry and when it does it's usually short-lived. When it does happen, the mainstream retroactively celebrates a rock artist or band decades after their prime success. The refusal to acknowledge the musicianship and talent during these prime years leave rock music fans screaming for vindication but, do we really need it? Rock music has faced years of being suppressed, ignored, and mistreated yet it still thrives. Although the definition of success has changed there are more new bands than ever before and more platforms for you to access the music. Bakko from Cobra's & Fire and I offer our perspective on why mainstream success for rock music is likely to not happen and why as rock fans we shouldn't care. Please enjoy the episode!

    The Devil's Music 21: James Divine Feb 26, 2021
    Show notes

James Divine, also known as Divine Hand Jim, is a master palm reader, psychic, witch and metaphysical teacher. In this episode, James and hostess Pleasant Gehman literally “talk to the hand”. James teaches listeners basics for reading their own palms before analyzing the hands of celebrities, from David Bowie, movie stars and popular reality show personalities, and doing a palm reading for Pleasant. They discuss various universal hand gestures, like throwin’ the horns and hang loose to peace signs, Hula hands, flippin’ the bird and the Vulcan “Live Along And Prosper” sign. You’ll find out what rings, manicures and nail polish color say about you and what your handholding style means for your love life. Also included: thoughts on Karmic connections, “Catholic damage” and, of course, hallucinogens and intoxicants.

Songfacts Podcast: Bailey Bryan Feb 26, 2021
    Show notes

In the "bad bitch" community (think Cardi B), there's not much room for insecurity or empathy. That's why Bailey Bryan has branded herself a "sensitive bad bitch," creating a sub-genre that is confident, but also in tune with real emotions.

Bryan is just 22 but has already ripened past her jaunty first single, "Own It," released in 2017 when she was 18. She's really on to something with this "sensitive bad bitch" (SBB) movement, which gives her permission to cry sometimes while maintaining her strength and independence.

In this episode, Bryan tells the stories behind some of her most popular songs and does a stripped-down acoustic version of "play w/ me," which is erupting on TikTok.

Performance Anxiety: Tamar Aphek Feb 26, 2021
    Show notes

Tamar Aphek has been called Israel’s guitar goddess. Her music is a wild combination of styles and genres. She’s fearless and knows exactly what sounds she’s looking for. But she didn’t start out as a guitar deity.

She began her musical journey with piano. Singing came a little after that as she joined a prestigious children’s choir. It wasn’t until she was 18 that she really started listening to rock music.

I learned that she looks at writing music like crashing a car into a tree. I also learned that the Israeli version of rock and roll is hummus. It makes sense, trust me. Tamar’s new album, All Bets Are Off, is out now on Kill Rock Stars. Pick it up and follow her on social media for exclusive stuff! Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Buy us non-commital coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Pick up a mug or shower curtain at performanceanx.threadless.com. And just like a pita chipi nto hummus, let’s dip into the show with Tamar Aphek on Performance Anxiety on Pantheon Podcast Network.
