Long May You Young 44: War Pigs to War of Man (w/ Astrid Young) Mar 24, 2021
    Show notes

This week we're joined by the extremely talented Astrid Young - a singer/songwriter, musician, author and all around amazing human being. She also happens to be Neil's half-sister. We talk about going from classical music to Black Sabbath, Astrid's latest album (It's so good), and the story behind some of the songs. Mike tells us about a phone in the desert and we speculate on the kind of things that happen out in the Mojave. Russ surprisingly fawns over Ben Keith a bit more. Astrid tells us some behind the scenes stories about the recording of Unplugged. Luke gives a shout out to good sound techs. (You know who you are.) It's was a good time.

Oh yeah, and we start off talking for about 8 minutes about Mike getting kicked out of a St. Patrick's day parade with the Dropkick Murphy's. Happy belated Saint Paddy's, everybody!

Huge, huge thanks to Astrid for hanging and talking with us. Her latest album, One Night at Giant Rock, is incredible and is streaming everywhere. Make sure you check it out, as well as her book, Being Young.

Beatles Vs. Stones: Finale - 1974 & beyond + We draft our mixtapes Mar 24, 2021
    Show notes

In this celebratory finale episode, Justin Cox and Ryan Page look at 1974 and the decades of releases that followed. After that, they run through a minefield of categories (John or Paul? Best/worst album cover? Fun stuff like that). They end the series where they began, with a draft, this time creating their own Beatles/Stones mixtapes.

Rock's Backpages Ep. 96: Adele Bertei on Labelle + Peter Laughner + August Darnell Mar 23, 2021
    Show notes

Content warning: This episode contains discussion of domestic abuse and violence against women (33:50–37:42).

In this episode, we talk to the amazing Adele Bertei about her career as a singer, songwriter and the author of two terrific books, Peter & the Wolves & the new Why Labelle Matters. Starting with her wild life as a gay teenager in Cleveland, Ohio, we hear about her friend & mentor Peter Laughner, founder member of Pere Ubu and a tragically self-destructive troubadour who died back in 1977.

Adele then talks us through her move to New York's East Village and her participation in the city's No Wave punk-funk scene as a member of James White & the Contortions — and as the leader of the all-girl Bloods. This leads on to discussion of ZE Records & August "Kid Creole" Darnell, audio clips of whom we hear in a 2016 conversation with Larry Jaffee... which in turn takes us on to Adele's hymn of love for Labelle, the trailblazing trio who morphed from '60s girl group into '70s Afrofuturists. RBP's co-hosts ask Adele about the group's manager Vicki Wickham (hear Vicki's own RBP podcast episode) and about Laura Nyro, Bobby Womack's Poet II, and female power & resistance in the decades before #MeToo.

Finally, after noting the passing of Sally Grossman — widow of Bob Dylan's manager Albert & the "lady in red" on the cover of Bob's Bringing It All Back Home — Mark rounds up the highlights of his recent additions to the RBP Library, including Richard Goldstein's review of The Band's Big Pink, Philip Elwood's prescient 1970 appreciation of a young Bruce Springsteen playing live in San Francisco & the recently-recruited Maureen O'Grady interviewing new Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. Jasper takes us out with thoughts on pieces about white appropriation of Black soul, plus an underwhelming 2000 "chart battle" between (insert polite cough) Westlife & Spice Girls...

Many thanks to special guest Adele Bertei. Why Labelle Mattersis published by UT Press and Peter & the Wolves by Smog Veil.

Pieces discussed: Nona Hendryx, Labelle, Bobby Womack, August Darnell audio, Sally Grossman, Woodstock, Pere Ubu/Devo, Kid Creole, Chris Farlowe, The Monkees, The Band, Janis Joplin, ZZ Top, Love's Alone Again Or, Mick Taylor, Steel Mill, Ian Dury, Keith Levene, Millie Jackson, Screaming Lord Sutch, Westlife vs. Spice Girls, Le Tigre and Lily Allen/Joss Stone/Amy Winehouse.

No Filler: The Obscure Shoegaze Episode Mar 23, 2021
    Show notes

A couple weeks ago we pondered the question: what happens when you combine doom metal with shoegaze? Doomgaze is an actual thing, with a history dating back to the 90s and a rise in the mid 2010s. But we'll get into all that next week: on this episode we bask in the shimmering, deafening, lush haze of our favorite subgenre: shoegaze. We pick a few random branches on the shoegaze tree and admire all that makes grunge's less popular sibling so goddamn amazing.

    Tracklist:

    1. Oeil - Strawberry Cream
    2. Letting Up Despite Great Faults - The Colors Aren't You Or Me
    3. The December Sound - Never
    4. The December Sound - Painkiller
    5. Whirr - Blue
    6. Nothing - Bent Nail

See Hear 83: Black Snake Moan Mar 22, 2021
    Show notes

We're sure you've all said or heard, “Don't judge a book by it's cover”. That can logically be extended on occasion to “Don't judge a film by its poster art”.

Welcome to episode 83 of See Hear Podcast.

Tim is finally rejoining the show after having been absent since October 2020. We welcomed him back with his choice of a round-table film discussion. No interviews....just the “terrible trio”. He picked a film by director Craig Brewer, whose earlier film Hustle and Flow is part of See Hear lore (don't try looking the episode up, it ain't there).

If you look at the poster art you will get the impression you're about to watch a sleazy tribute to early 70s grindhouse cinema. The truth is a little more complex than that. We advise you not to rage against the perception of what it is, but to absorb what it REALLY is...let us be your guides. Samuel L Jackson plays an ex-blues guitarist whose life is broken. He discovers a battered Christina Ricci outside his farm – she's also someone whose life is broken. Sam's character tries to heal her though chains, religion and the blues.

The film has its detractors, but we believe it's more from THAT poster than the content. Tune in as we talk about anxiety, Christina Ricci's knack for acting in films where she's kidnapped, and dancing as catharsis.

There's also a Welcome Back Kotter reference because....we had to.

If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, please tell your friends to tune in anyway.
